BE Confident to BE Positive

by

: Dr. Vinson B. Pineda

The past year has certainly been favorably eventful as it is memorable. With 2011 as a year of great milestones for Dermclinic – highlighted by the celebration of the professional skincare pioneer’s 40th Founding Anniversary, and the unveiling of the new face of Dermclinic, celebrity beauty queen Venus Raj, things have never looked this good. And yet, that long road spanning forty years was never a smooth ride. Dermclinic and its affiliates are no strangers to challenges, but somehow, all of us have come out stronger, more determined, and more confident than before. As the pioneer of the professional skincare industry in the country, we put a great deal of attention into how we do what we do best. Commitment to a high level of professionalism, from our trained dermatologists and staff to our general business and work ethics, promotes a market relationship based on confidence – our confidence in our expertise to deliver services on one side, and our clients’ confidence to get only the best level of expertise on the other. Confidence exudes positivity, and leads to all good things, whether in our business or in our daily lives. For 2012, Dermclinic is ushering in a positive change, starting with this first issue of ESSENCE – aptly referring to the real sparkle within each and every one of us, as well as the scientific expertise behind every service we offer and take pride in. Along with a revisiting of Dermclinic’s 40th anniversary highlights, our skincare specialists have also taken their time to share with our readers some helpful skincare tips, and with our new Brand Ambassador Venus Raj, may we inspire Filipinos to walk the same path to beauty and success with confidence. Our confidence lies in your trust. Trust the experts, only at Dermclinic. Vinson B. Pineda, M.D.

Stem Cell Treatment for Skin Rejuvenation and Hair Re-growth By : Andrea T. Villareal, M.D.

A bitter truth, aging is a natural phenomenon. In this day and age, more and more people are having “anti-aging” treatments. Among these, stem cell-based treatment is one of the relatively newer but well-researched methods to combat the aging process. This treatment aims to delay skin and hair tissue degeneration by boosting cell regeneration mainly through the activation of stem cells. Stem cells are specialized cells with the unique capability to self-replicate and to differentiate into cells of various tissues. They are present throughout the entire life of an organism. However, in time they become dormant and the process of cell regeneration is slowed down. This then translates into the often visible signs of aging which include hair loss and wrinkled, dry, sagging, pigmented skin.

At Dermclinic, Stem Cell Therapy involves a very effective yet painless technique called Microneedling, performed by a licensed dermatology practitioner. During the procedure, a cocktail of stem cell activators which stimulate skin cell regeneration and protein formation combined with lightening agents is infused to the skin. As a result, the skin becomes more tight, supple and radiant, and hair grows back on the scalp after treatment. More and more people are now undergoing Dermclinic’s Stem Cell Therapy for skin rejuvenation and hair re-growth because of the positive results that speak clearly for themselves. Remember, one is never too old to prevent the onset of aging.

Carbon Dioxide Laser

By: Maria Rebecca Gavino-Sanchez, M.D.

The Fractional Carbon Dioxide (CO2) laser is one of the latest advances in skin rejuvenation technology. This type of laser uses varied light energies (i.e., continuous, ultrapulse) delivered in a scanning pattern to remove thin layers of skin with minimal heat damage to the surrounding tissue, without the need for surgery.

CO2 lasers are used to treat wrinkles and acne scars, as well as benign skin growths such as warts and seborrheic dermatitis. Since CO2 lasers have the longest wavelengths, they can be used safely on darker skin types and on delicate areas around the eyes and mouth. Although patients who are in their late 40’s and 70’s with moderate to deep wrinkles stand to benefit the most from CO2 lasers, this technology can also help younger patients (30’s to 40’s) who have early signs of wrinkles or mild to moderate acne scarring as well. Laser treatment can

6

be customized; healing and downtime can depend on how deep or shallow the treatment is. While chances of side effects occuring are there, they are rare. These can be in the form of acne flaring, hyperpigmentation, milia formation, or the reactivation of herpes simplex, especially after treatment around the mouth. Post-inflammatory swelling can be expected but can be relieved by an icepack application for the first 24–48 hours. Patients will be able to see some immediate results, but the full effects of the treatment can be appreciated more or less after 2–4 months. The skin will become lightly pink after around 5–10 days from the time the skin completely heals. During this phase, the skin will feel smoother, and as color returns to normal, the skin will show more glow, a lighter tone, and fewer lines.

DERMCLINIC Presscon:

Dermclinic’s New Brand Ambassador

at

2010 has definitely been Maria Venus Raj’s year. After being crowned as the fourth runner-up in the 2010 Miss Universe beauty pageant held at Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S.A., endless opportunities began coming to her doorstep. The latest of these was her official launch as the newest face of local skin and hair clinic brand—Dermclinic. “Working with Venus Raj has been a breeze,” according to Dr. Vinson Pineda, Dermclinic’s founder and president. “She is a very renowned personality and she’s very decent,” he says. “Venus is a positive influence to others. She’s very simple, honest and down to earth. She talks with sincerity and she can easily make you feel relaxed and at peace”, Dr. Pineda added.

Dermclinic held a special press conference last November 15, 2011 at the Felix Restaurant in Greenbelt5, Makati City. It was well-attended by online bloggers and representatives from print and TV media.

As a model, Venus also champions the beauty of dark-skinned women. For her, true beauty does not regard any skin color. Instead, women should be able to appreciate themselves and feel confident and comfortable with their natural complexion.

The invocation was led by the president and founder of Dermclinic, Dr. Vinson B. Pineda. He shared some words of inspiration that made the otherwise rainy day a brighter one for all present.

Aside from her success in the Miss Universe pageant in 2010, Venus Raj was also named as the “Woman of the Year” in the recently-concluded 10th Gawad Amerika Awards Night last November 5th. The Gawad Amerika Foundation honors individuals who excel in their respective careers and make a difference in their lives and communities.

“We are thankful to the Lord and to our customers and patrons for our success all throughout these 40 years,” said the esteemed Dr. Pineda. “Dermclinic was founded on the hopes of bringing professional dermatological services to all Filipinos and bringing

them quality products that will help them protect and maintain the health of their skin. After all, a healthy skin is beautiful skin,” he added. After a short audio-visual presentation of Dermclinic’s road to 40 years, the event culminated with the launching of the newest endorser of Dermclinic, none other than the 2010 Miss Universe 4th Runner Up and TV celebrity, Maria Venus Raj. It was a memorable lunch date with the beauty queen and the Father of Philippine Dermatology. Everyone enjoyed the good food and warm ambiance, and even got the chance to pose with Dr. Pineda and Ms. Raj for some souvenir photo shots.

Ms. Venus Raj’s reign as the new Dermclinic brand ambassador begins.

Summer Lovin’

The Perils of Summer Heat With the advent of the hot summer season, beach lovers, and most people in general are once again stuck in a dilemma. While sunny days are associated with a certain sense of mental uplifting and provide people the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities, many are also well-aware of the particularly nasty things excessive sun exposure can do to their skin. Sun Facts • Anyone is susceptible to sunburn. • The incidence of people developing skin cancers continues to increase at present. • The risk of developing malignant melanoma, one of the deadliest types of skin cancer, doubles every 10 years. • Protecting the skin from the sun’s rays could prevent the development of up to 80% of known skin cancers. • While most types of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun and other UVR sources are reflected off the water, light-colored surfaces, concrete, sand, and snow, certain types (shorter wavelengths) of UVR can penetrate through water. Sun Protection Tips for Adults • Use sunscreen products all year round. Up to 80% of the sun’s harmful UV rays reach the earth even on the most overcast days. • Choose a good sunscreen product with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15. • Look for sunscreen products that contain metal oxides such as

18

titanium dioxide and zinc oxide which are non-allergenic yet offer the best protection against UVR. • Know the difference between waterresistant and waterproof sunscreen products – water-resistant sunscreen stays on skin for up to 40 minutes of water exposure while waterproof sunscreen can last twice as long (80 minutes). • Use sunscreen liberally. Some studies have shown that the average person uses only half of the amount of sunscreen that is recommended for use (to achieve the indicated SPF rating) by the manufacturer. The average adult requires about an ounce (28 grams) of sunscreen for adequate body coverage, while children use about half the amount. • Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors for maximum sun protection. • Wear hats with sun-proof top and brim liners for additional protection. Hat brims should be at least 4 inches or more, and every inch of additional brim can lower the lifetime risk of developing skin cancer by 10%. • Choose protective eyewear with UVblocking filters as the eyes are the second most common site where UVR-induced cancers develop. • Minimize sun exposure between 10AM to 4PM when the sun’s rays are the strongest. If one’s shadow is longer than one’s height, then it’s okay to be outside.

I’ve Got Something On My Skin The Truth about Warts and Moles Warts (known as verrucae) are non-cancerous infectious growths that are caused by certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Generally, there are several types of warts - common warts such as palmar warts which can be seen on the hands; plantar warts which usually grow on the soles of the feet; and flat warts, which are small and have the tendency to spread and grow in numbers. Moles, on the other hand, are clusters of heavily-pigmented skin cells that manifest as brown, blue or black spots on the skin. Some moles are

at a high risk of turning cancerous as excessive exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation can trigger certain forms of malignant melanomas, and therefore may need to be examined by your doctor for further evaluation. Other types of skin growths include the following: • Cysts – closed sacs filled with fluid or solid material; cysts that contain pus are called abscesses • Skin tags – harmless skin flaps or projections that usually grow on areas of skin creasing such as the neck, armpits, groin and under the breasts

Food for the Skin Get your skin and body ready for summer by starting with a healthy diet together with a good skin care regimen. Healthy Fats Essential fatty acids, found in oily fish, nuts and seeds, help to keep skin soft and supple – studies show that they may help lessen the severity of skin conditions like rosacea and eczema. Blueberries Blueberries are very high in antioxidants which target free radicals,

preventing damage to skin cells. Also, blueberries are a good source of fiber, vitamins C and E, and riboflavin. Citrus Fruits Fruits such as oranges and lemons are a good source of vitamin C and bioflavonoids which help to support the collagen content of the skin, keeping it firm and young-looking. Green Tea Green Tea is rich in antioxidants which help reduce ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-induced skin damage and

is high in polyphenols, potent free radical fighters. Green tea is also high in vitamins C, D and K, as well as riboflavin, zinc, calcium, magnesium and iron. Water Clean drinking water should be a large part of your daily intake. Water keeps the body hydrated and helps to eliminate toxins.
