Welcome Welcome to LegenDerry August Craft Month! August Craft Month is an annual celebration of contemporary craft in Northern Ireland. Now in its eight year, the initiative is led by Craft NI and is delivered in partnership with a range of organisations across Northern Ireland. This listings guide has been compiled by Derry City Council as part of the Craft Development Programme to highlight craft-related activities taking place locally during August. Look out for unusual ‘re-purposed’ objects at the CultureCraft exhibition in Ebrington, discover the latest technology available to makers at the Nerve Centre FabLab or try your hand at one of the ‘Make My Monday’ workshops or other craft classes throughout August. There are plenty of opportunities to see, make or buy crafts.

CultureCraft 2014 REclaim / REpurpose CultureCraft is an ongoing series of projects showcasing the best of contemporary craft, making, and creative talent across the island of Ireland. REclaim / REpurpose is a contemporary craft project taking place during August Craft Month 2014 curated by Seliena Coyle. CultureCraft 2014 is supported through Derry City Council Legacy funding and the Craft Development Programme. The project includes the following three parts: RESIDENCY A three week residency ‘REclaim the Streets’ with internationally renowned American craft designer Boris Bally. Bally will work with a team of selected makers, students and locals to design and create a collection of street furniture at the 4rS Recycling Centre. Derry Print Workshop is a fine art print workshop established to promote the appreciation and practice of printmaking and other related visual arts. The workshop is aimed at people who enjoy drawing and getting their hands dirty! ‘Intaglio’ is a traditional form of fine art printmaking practiced by artists such as Rembrandt and Picasso where the artist draws into a plate, inks it up and prints using a traditional etching press.

The Fashion & Textile Design Hub CRAFT FOR FASHION WORKSHOPS Are you a maker, designer or entrepreneur in the fashion and textile industry? The Fashion and Textile Design Hub is a new initiative driven by Inner City Trust and Derry City Council to support creative individuals, entrepreneurs and businesses in the fashion and textile design
sectors in Derry~Londonderry. The Hub is located in the city’s second oldest building at 31-33 Shipquay Street and will include four components – the Stitchery; a Design Room and Creative Lounge; self contained designer work studios; and creative meeting/ event space. The Hub will open in late summer/autumn of 2014, however other initiatives will commence before then. These will include ‘craft for fashion’ workshops during August Craft Month covering sewing, knitting and fabric embellishment. Dates, venue and cost to be confirmed. This workshop by Anne Marie O’Hara will teach participants how to make a completed paverpol figure so they can learn the process and make these beautiful sculptures themselves. An Evening of Textile Delight! As part of the Féile 2014 celebrations, Bluebell Arts Project will be celebrating the success of two of its projects which are funded by Arts Council NI. A textiles fashion show will showcase work produced by ‘Keep her Knit’ and glass button making workshops throughout the year. In addition a fabulous screen printed art quilt will be on exhibition as a fine example of the breadth of creative skills and techniques gained by local women as part of Bluebell Arts Projects’ Craft Circle. Nerve Centre FabLab Open Days A ‘FabLab’ is a digital fabrication workshop which allows anyone to make practically anything. Developed by MIT in Boston, almost any concept which can be designed on 2D or 3D software can be manufactured quickly and cost effectively within the labs. The FabLab is part of an international, interconnected network of labs. It is partnered with a FabLab based at the Ashton Centre in Belfast - the first FabLabs on the island of Ireland – which are supported by the European Union PEACE Programme administered by SEUPB. The FabLab are running open access Fridays in August as well as two introductory sessions which will be of interest to makers and others looking to find out more about cutting-edge technology.

Laser cutting is a technology that uses a high power laser to cut and/or etch materials, and is typically used for manufacturing applications. It works by directing the output of a laser onto various materials where the surface will be etched or the material cut all the way through. The position of the laser is computer controlled, allowing for accurate cutting or etching of digital files. If you are curious, or would like to know how a lasercutter might fit in to your current workflow, come along to FabLab Nerve Centre for this introductory session. FREE. Registration is essential. Roses From the Heart Bonnet Making Workshop Audrey Doherty will facilitate this workshop in remembrance of Ireland’s ‘convict’ women. You will be given the name of a ‘convict’ woman to embroider/ appliqué onto your bonnet which will then be included in the ‘Roses from the Heart’ Exhibition by Christina Henri. Some materials provided but you will need to bring white fabrics, decorative buttons, bows and trims. Basic hand sewing skills are required. Pattern and instructions will be provided. The Craft Village Collective is a retail facility featuring the work of 20 professional craft makers in the North West. The shop showcases a wonderful array of products including ceramics, textiles, fashion, jewellery, glass, prints and photography. As well as the work on display for sale, many of the craft makers will undertake commissions. The Collective has recently taken on new members including Alpha Stained Glass, Karen O’Kane and Leona Devine Ceramics.
