Welcome Welcome to four magical days of spooky family fun at the Banks of the Foyle Hallowe’en Carnival 2011! Europe’s greatest Hallowe’en festival returns on October 28th with its biggest and best programme of family events yet, leading up to the spectacular carnival parade and fireworks display on October 31st. Look out for a special silver lining theme this year to celebrate 25 amazing years since the Carnival began as a community festival! There’s lots of fantastic new events for teenagers and young people too, with Teenage Spooks in Guildhall Square showcasing the cream of local performers and gigs from ex-Pussycat Doll’s star Kimberly Wyatt’s new group and other top music acts. So get into the spooky spirit exploring haunted houses, bobbing for apples and carving pumpkins. Experience terrifying ghostbuster tours, chilling ghost stories, inventive puppet theatre and family film shows. As always, there’s fancy dress, face painting, sports and atmospheric outdoor markets to enjoy as well. Make sure you create your wildest costume yet to join the throngs of witches, warlocks, ghouls, vampires and monsters or just enjoy the magnificently colourful floats at the world famous carnival parade on October 31st, followed by the spectacular fireworks display lighting up the night sky over the River Foyle in a riot of colours. The vibrant cultural activity that helped earn Derry~Londonderry the much coveted UK City of Culture 2013 award comes from its people and that creative energy makes exploring this most historic and buzzing of European cities a delight for local and visitor alike. Féile na Samhna 2011 Date: Tuesday, October 25th Venue: Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin Time: 10am – 1pm A special Irish language A special Irish language celebration of the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marks the beginning of winter and the Celtic New Year. Local Irish-medium schools will tell the story of Oíche Shamhna (Hallowe’en Night) in a performance of original drama sketches, storytelling and music. Riverwatch Spook-tacular Aquarium Become a detective of the deep, look for creepy bugs, hear about dragons and pythons and walk on the wild side. The Riverwatch Aquarium in Prehen would like to invite all ghouls and bouys to join them in for a spook-tacular weekend of Hallowe’en fun! A free attraction, just outside Derry city centre, the Aquarium represents the freshwater and marine species native to our own waters with lobster, crabs, starfish, coalfish, blenny’s and lots of other unusual marine fish and crustaceans in their lough life and seashore life tanks. Hallowe’en Special – Detectives of the Deep Date: Saturday, October 29th Venue: Riverwatch Aquarium, Prehen Time: 1:30pm – 3:30pm Can you become a detective of the deep and help to solve clues at a wildlife crime scene? Join the RSPB to become a detective, following clues through a spooky aquarium and haunted wood at the Riverwatch Centre. They even have a life size model of a basking shark so bring along a camera if you want a photo with him on the day.

It’s Zoo Scary! – Belfast Zoo Date: Monday, October 31st Venue: Riverwatch Aquarium, Prehen Time: 10:30am – 11:15am & 12pm Dragons and pythons are some of the more mysterious creatures celebrating Hallowe’en in the city this year. A thrilling innovation for this year’s carnival, Hall of Horrors sees a series of wonderful performances you just won’t want to miss. Taking over three rooms of St. Columb’s Hall, you can enjoy an array of activities and acts for all ages from the mindblowing antics of the amazing Bruce Airhead to the weird and wonderful Witches Three and the delightful Once Upon a Time, where children become the stars of the performance.

Recommended viewing points: Along Strand Road and along Queens Quay.

Carnival of Lights Parade Time: 7pm As winter approaches and the darkness settles, we come together to dance, celebrate and illuminate the streets at the annual Banks of the Foyle Hallowe’en Carnival of Light Parade. The NW Carnival Initiative, in partnership with Derry City Council, is working with community groups, schools and local artists to make this year’s Carnival Parade as special as ever. This year will also mark the 25th anniversary of the Banks of the Foyle Halloween Carnival, so a ‘silver lining’ theme will run throughout the procession. So why not join us and enjoy the luminous pageants, fiery costumes and carnival performances, dance along to the Samba and marching bands and marvel at the magnificent silvery large-scale props and carnival characters. And don’t forget to dress in your spookiest costume – you don’t want to be left out! The Blanket Earth Project- “Blanket Earth Walks The World” - 2011 - 2016’ will also be participating in this year’s Carnival. With over 300 school children representing nine schools throughout Co. Carnival Fireworks Venue: Riverfront Time: 8pm Internationally renowned display company Walk the Plank will amaze and astound with their 15-20 minute spectacular firework display, backed up with a stunning soundtrack and visual images. The culmination of the celebrations will be a spectacle of amazing artistry in the river. Prepare to be amazed! Traffic, Car Parking & Event Information The Family Carnival Zone The Family Friendly Carnival Zone will start at Fletcher Avenue and continue along the Foyle Walkway along the Quay and the Council and DOE car parks, Guildhall Square and Waterloo place. Please note that the law does not allow you to drink alcohol in the street anywhere within the city centre. If you do so, your alcohol can be seized and you can be reported to court and fined up to £5000. Tune into BBC Radio Foyle and Q120.9FM from 3pm on October 31st for updates on traffic and car parking information. Carnival Information Telephone: (028) 7137 6545. Emergency Route will be coned and signed with “Parking not permitted” enforced by the PSNI. Taxis: The Taxi Association will operate from temporary taxi stands: Orchard House and The Diamond. For all your Taxis needs, call the Taxis Company on 028 71262626

Westbank Car Parking: Bridge Street, Foyle Road, Foyle Valley Railway, Lawrence Hill, Magee Campus, Quayside, Society Street and William Street. East Bank Car Parking: Alfred Street, Bond’s Hill, Distillery Brae, Railway Station, St Columb’s Park including the Weather Pitch, Simpsons Brae Spencer Road and Waterside Health Centre. First Aid: There will be a temporary First Aid unit located at the Guildhall Street and ambulances will be situated at the City Hotel, Foyle Street, Lower Clarendon Street and Council Offices. Meeting Point: This will be signed for Council Offices, Strand Road and Kingslink Road. Public Toilets: Adjacent to Victoria Market car park (side of BT Building).

Disabled Access: there will a section for use at the main stage at Guildhall Square. Drop-off point is the lay-by adjacent to Guildhall Square.

Parade commences: at 7pm and ends approximately 7.45pm. To accommodate the crowds and Carnival parade several roads within the city will be temporarily closed from 5.30pm. Alternative routes will be available at this time.
