Welcome The City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival is set to return for its 11th installment in 2012 and this year brings with it another exceptional year in terms of international jazz and blues, showcasing local and up and coming talent. The event officially marks the start of the summer making this the perfect location for music

lovers everywhere to visit for an activity filled May Bank Holiday weekend. This years event will take place on the 3rd-7th May and will mark the start of a series of celebratory events for the city of Derry~Londonderry as it prepares to be the first UK City of Culture in 2013. This years festival will attract some of the biggest names in the jazz
industry including international performer Van Morrison, and festival favourite, the soulful Ruby Turner, who is one of many jazz
legends swinging into town to be part of the weekend of musical celebration. Other events taking place as part of the festival include the Guinness Jazz Trail, an open air market, outdoor gigs and performances and a range of fringe events for all the family. The festival is a firm favourite on the local music scene and is successfully making a name for itself across Northern Ireland and beyond as it grows in stature and attracts audiences from across the country to experience up and coming jazz talent, international artists and local performers. Since its inception the festival has steadily broadened its scope to include jive, swing, boogie,
dance, rhythm and blues in addition to traditional and more mainstream type jazz. The festival is a true reflection of the cutting edge of musical talent in the city and offers the perfect opportunity for visitors to experience at first hand the city’s reputation as a young, vibrant city on the cusp of new opportunities and celebration. The festival is synonymous with getting everyone involved and creating a real buzz and energy across the city. It has a broad appeal, attracting audiences from all ages and musical tastes with a strong family friendly focus and the ability to get the city to its feet with a scorching blend of musical sounds. What’s New in 2012 The organisers of the City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival are proud of the fact that it attracts regular performers and artists to the event each year but a vital part of the festival’s success is its ability to attract new acts and new audiences. Kitten & the Hip
This year’s line-up of international and local artists will bring an exciting blend of musical sounds to the city that will keep festival lovers rocking over the Bank Holiday weekend. Well-known British actress Rebecca Grant of Holby City fame and star of the West End hit “Bombay Nights” will join festival favorites the Jive Aces for a series of performances throughout the festival, while festival

regular Ronnie Greer and his powerhouse band will be joined on stage by special guest Grainne Duffy. Grainne who will also be performing a solo gig, has been hailed one of the top up and coming Irish jazz performers. Expect a night of blues, roots and jazz based music played with style and conviction by the best in the business. Local musician Andrew Monk, who has a long association with the festival, will be performing for the first time with his new 18-piece Blue Note Band and Washington based jive dancers Gary and Sue of Gottaswing.com will be getting your feet moving at their jive dance sessions and workshops.
High on the festival agenda is showcasing young local talent and for the first year ever the festival will be taking the music outdoors to Guildhall Square where students from the University of Ulster’s Big Band, Foyle College’s Jazz Band, St Cecilia’s College, Donegal School of Music Band and Limavady Grammar School Jazz Band will be performing their own eclectic range of music and create a real buzz and atmosphere in the city centre. Kitten and the Hip, a new band with a full brass section and accompanying DJ, is sure to be huge hit at the late night clubs. The band features trombonist Ashley Slater, who was a member of the 80’s collective Loose Tubes and the other half of Freak Power with Norman Cook and have enjoyed recent success with their recent jeans advert cover track “Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out.

London based Troyka, is one of the new bands to this year’s festival that everyone is talking about since the success of their sensational album and their much acclaimed performances across the UK, performing their unique style of textural guitar loops combined with displaced drum grooves. With the city buzzing ahead of its big celebrations for 2013 UK City of Culture, there’s no better time to be part of the celebrations and vibrancy – so come along and be part of our festival. The festival organisers are always keen to promote new and upcoming acts and are keen to ensure regular festival goers get to see the their favourite acts performing during the festival. A big part of the City of Derry Jazz and Big Band festival’s success is the huge array of talented acts that come back to the city every year to be part of the celebrations. 10
It goes without saying that the hugely popular Jive Aces will be making a welcome return to the city stage at this year’s event while festival regulars King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys, Oo-Bop-Sh’Bam and Ska Beat will really get the crowds moving when they perform! Greggi G and his Crazy Gang are synonymous with the festival and their unique style of rock and roll and enthralling lively mix of music is guaranteed to have people rocking in the aisles and filling the dance floor.
The festival is delighted to welcome back Carmen Ghia and the Hot Rods, who are hailed as being one of the best swinging rockabilly bands around and are enjoying success all over Europe. The amazing Mirenda Rosenberg, the US singer who has made the North West of Ireland her home,
will be performing along with the Linley Hamilton Quartet and other festival favourites the Harry Connolly Band, Joan Talbot, David Lyttle and the Roaring Forties are among the regular festival participants who will be part of the entourage to make this festival bigger and better than before.

and who is a big draw for local audiences, will be charming her Derry fans with her dexterous vocal chords and charismatic personality. Blues lovers will be delighted to see the Lee Hedley Band, the New Blues Reunion make a return to the city while Bluez Katz and the Ronnie Greer Blues Band will be taking time out of their busy performing schedules to be part of their favourite festival.

His live shows are always inspired and transcendental while some of his albums such as Astral Weeks, Moondance and It’s Too Late To Stop Now are widely viewed as among the best ever made. His songwriting has influenced everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Bono, Damien Rice to Paolo Nutini, Elvis Costello to Jim Morrison... The list is endless.

Following a sell out Irish tour in spring 2011 with The Chet Baker Story this is the third instalment of pianist John Leighton’s Icons of Jazz series. The concept aims to give the listener an insight to the featured artist’s life and background while keeping the focus on accurately re-creating their music in a live setting. 16
The music will be performed in classic quintet format which is headed up by London’s rising star of alto saxophone Tom Harrison (Dagda Quartet). He will be joined by BBC Northern Ireland’s Jazz personality and trumpet hero Linley Hamilton who will also compare the event.

One of Ireland’s most celebrated jazz musicians Gay McIntyre, joins Linley on After Midnight to celebrate the launch of his debut album, The Music Within Me, at the tender age of 77. Gay is the father of jazz saxophone in Ireland with a career spanning 60 years in which time he has played opposite Dave Brubeck
and Nat King Cole and been a core inspiration behind the establishment of the hugely successful Derry Jazz Festival. The show celebrates his life, his enthusiasm for music and discovers what drives a man who is still as consumed by music as he was the day he first picked up a clarinet.

White Lies, his second release in 2008, achieved a top ten 18
position in the Irish Albums Chart. It later went platinum and was nominated for the Choice Music Prize. In 2009 he won Best Irish Male at the Meteor Awards. His new album ‘Red to Blue’, produced over a two year period will be released in March 2012.

Directed by Derek Collins and formed in 2004 by senior brass and woodwind players the band have performed in numerous school and charity events and make a regular appearance at the Limavady Jazz and Blues Festival. They are delighted this year to be making their debut at the Derry Jazz Festival.

Formed in 2010 and is comprised entirely by students from the University of Ulster Magee. The music they play is pop-jazz and jazz funk with a Big Band feel This set will feature four fabulous vocalists with hits like Midnight Train to Georgia, Red Clay and Me and Mrs Jones giving the punters are a great gig, not just the band!

The Birth of the Cool: Led by Adam Melvin (saxophone) and featuring Linley Hamilton (trumpet) an ensemble made up of past and present students at the University of Ulster at Magee perform the classic Miles Davis album in its entirety with arrangements from the original 1949/1950 recordings. 27
