June is yet another big month for live music in the city with two festivals taking place. The Walled City Music Festival and Celtronic, both very different in the own right, will attract not only a great crowd to the city... but also some of the biggest international musicians. For the kids, this month sees the Horrible Histories franchise bring their latest instalment to the Millennium Forum. They have the knack of keeping the kids entertained while also teaching them a few things along the way. ‘Cardboard Citizens’ will bring Forum Theatre to the Waterside theatre this month in the form of Benefit, a very gripping play by Sarah Woods. aving just released his ninth album, ‘After the Harvest’, we caught up with Derry’s very own Paul Casey to talk about all things music including touring with Chris Rea, the current state of the local scene and the influences for his new album. How long have you been on the music scene now? I’ve been writing and recording now for around 20 years, having played in a number of cover bands around the town. And around then, I grew up listening to the music of Chris Rea and Clapton, but I actually ended up working with Chris Rea when I was quite young, and toured with him for about 13 years and that opened up a lot of doors for me. How did you manage to get involved with Chris Rea? I was able to get a demo to Chris, and he loved it. This gave me the confidence to do more and more, and he encouraged me to do more too. We recorded an album together and it started from there. I actually gave Gerry Anderson some of my music and he was a massive champion of what I was doing. He was one of the biggest influences that I had, and having someone like Gerry in your home town who was the biggest radio presenter in Northern Ireland, loving your stuff and encouraging you to do more… this opened so many doors for me. To have the platform of Gerry’s show across Radio Ulster for me, for Bronagh

Gallagher, for Eoin O’Callaghan for all these people, we are in so much debt to Gerry Anderson, it’s incredible. How have you seen the local music scene progress since you first started out? There’s so much good music now around the town. Way back when I started out, I was using a great recording studio in Donegal but I was writing so much and had so many ideas that it was costing me a fortune to record them all. I ended up getting myself some recording gear and started to record at home and it’s grown from there. But I think that you can see that with bands in the town, everybody’s recording at home because the technology’s there, and I think that’s a factor why there is so much good music out there. The facilities are great these days, I remember when I was in the college, I said to my music teacher “I want to play the guitar” and he told me I couldn’t. It was either flute, piano or violin, so I ended up dropping out of music, which was a shame. But that’s changed. I’ve done a few song writing workshops in schools, and they’ve got everything, drum kits, recording, logic, guitar amps. So it’s totally changed and brilliant to see.

Paul casey So what about the Homegrown concert, will it be a yearly event? Well we’re going to do it in January again and keep building it, maybe change a few wee things every year. We started it during Culture year and it has now run for three years, and the fact that it was so supported within the town was incredible, we nearly had the Forum filled with people out to support their own, and I think that’s brilliant about Derry. How did you manage to tap into the TV show market? I look after a lot of marketing and I’ve worked out a way of getting my songs to music supervisors. It’s a wee cottage industry and I do some work with a producer in America. But there was a show on ABC called ‘The Neighbors’, and the theme of the show was that the boy and girl had broke up, but they were still in love with each other and had got back together. I sent her my song called ‘Still in love with you’ and she loved it and emailed me straight back saying, “I want this song for the show.” So it’s about timing too.

My dad was actually sitting there listening to me, in this big church in Belfast, and I went up and asked him “what was it like?” and he was sitting there nearly crying. It was amazing. So between the rehearsal, the sound check and then the gig, it was over that fast, to just have those six songs with them was incredible. Each time was as good as the last. So talk us through the new album? There’s a lot more guitar in this album, the last album I tried to make it sound like a soundtrack, but JJ Cale is a big influence of mine and other American guitar players. So there’s a lot of that influence there. Music is great but sometimes you can lose track of what you do. The first song is called ‘Hold On’ and is about that. It’s about falling out of love for music and is split into three parts and progresses like a journey, starting in a minor key, into a gospel section and comes out the other end in a major key, upbeat tempo.

If you could go back in time and give some advice to the young Paul Casey starting out on his musical journey, what would it be? The best bit of advice I ever got was from Liam Bradley who plays drums with me, and is one of the best drummers in Ireland, but his advice was ‘be a nice guy’… if you can be a nice guy and be able to work with people, you’ll always be busy.

Where did the title for the new album come from? I had no idea what I was calling the new album, but my cousin is a great photographer who has done the art work for the last couple of albums, so I told him what I was doing and he sent me some photographs. He had a photo of a tree down by Redcastle and it was called ‘After the Harvest’ and I thought “that’s it” and it tied the album together.

You played with the Ulster Orchestra in the Guildhall last year, what was that like? It was incredible. The day before the gig there was a rehearsal where I ran through my two songs with them. I landed, got up, “you ready?” “yeah, I’m ready,” so they went through the first song… incredible “happy with that?...okay, next song” bang.

Irelands best electronic music festival is back...

celtronic 2015

eltronic is back again for it’s latest instalment of electronic dance later this month, and will draw thousands of music fans to the city. Now in its fifteenth year, Celtronic is notorious for attracting the biggest names in electronic music playing alongside the best local DJs in venues throughout the city, and is considered to be Ireland’s premier electronic music festival. Still a nonprofit making festival, the organisers have maintained the same ethos since they founded in 2000, that of keeping ticket prices as low as possible whilst still managing to attract dance’s greatest stars. Day one, Wednesday 24th, sees a Maeve Records showcase in the form of ‘Mano Le Tough’ and ‘The Drifter’ in the stunning surrounds of the Guildhall.

Mano Le Tough has been considered to be a the next big thing, so much so that Kristian Beyer of Âme stated “thanks to Mano Le Tough, I have no fears for the future of House”. The Dubliner has become a regular in some of the best clubs in the world. “I guess I try and make music that has an emotional resonance without being overly sentimental or schmalzy. It means a lot to me to try and connect with the listener on a deeper level and add something to their lives that’s more than a hands in the air 5am moment in a club” says Mano. Also on the bill is The Drifter, aka Mark Flynn, who had a very diverse musical background growing up, from playing in bands to performing in choirs. Now a DJ and singer, The Drifter has played in the biggest clubs

mano le tough throughout Europe and runs the Maeve record alongside Mano Le Tough and Baikal. Day Two, in yet another one of Derry’s stunning buildings, The Glassworks, sees Resident Advisor’s no.1 live act of 2014, RECONDITE brings his show to the festival. The German techno producer is known to do major events such as Melt!, Amsterdam Dance Event and Time Warp but enjoys the smaller intimate venues just as much, so he’ll be at home in The Glassworks. Joining Recondite will be Fort Romeau. The London based producer has a patient approach to his music “I want to allow things to breathe and develop gradu-

ally over longer track lengths, rather than cram everything into four or five minutes.” Day Three sees Celtronic move across the city and set up in the Nerve Centre in the form of Henrik Schwarz and Ripperton. Voted in the top 5 live acts in the world by Resident Advisor, Schwatz is now considered to be one electronic music’s most requested live acts. He likes to maintain a balance between electronic music, classical and jazz, and his highly charged dance sets which have gone down a storm everywhere he plays. He is a classical and experimental pianist as well as a composer, composing both classical and electronic music. As a producer, it’s thought that there are few others making similar music to Objekt. Taking influence from IDM and electro, the Berlin-based tech producer welcomes experimentation “My working style is one of revision after revision” he says. Five days of a jam packed schedule is what Celtronic is all about and attracting the best DJ’s in dance… this year is no different.

ormed in 2008 by Artistic Directors Dr Cathal Breslin and his wife Dr Sabrina Hu, the Walled City Music Festival was tasked with bringing outstanding classical music to the heart of Derry. The idea behind the festival was to create access and opportunities, and provide a much needed boost for the new generation of Classical Musicians in Northern Ireland With the aim to create a brighter future for the young people all over the country, through inspiration, education, and exposure to the highest level in the arts, the Walled City Music Festival does just that with the many concerts and workshops it holds to inspire and excite through classical music. Year on year, some of the finest classical musicians have taken part in the festival, and this year is no different. A packed schedule lasting four days, the festival features

international guest artists including Kathryn Stott and Martin Roscoe, Sylvain Blassel, Anne Akiko Meyers, Quercus as well as the festival artistic directors themselves. DAY ONE: Thursday June 4th, 7.30pm, Great Hall, Ulster University, Magee Campus Kathryn Stott & Martin Roscoe (pianos) Both Kathryn and Martin are considered to be two of Britain’s most versatile pianists and will perform at the opening night of the festival in the University of Ulster’s Great Hall at Magee. From 2009 – 2014, Kathryn had been Artistic Director of the Manchester Chamber Concerts Society and was Guest Artistic Director of Incontri in Terra di Siena in 2010 and 2011, and has been a regular visitor to international festivals both as soloist and chamber musician. year, Kathryn also celebrates a 30 year partnership with Yo-Yo Ma, and together they have regularly toured Europe, the USA, South America and the Far East. Martin has succeeded Kathryn as Artistic Director of the Manchester Chamber Concerts Society, and has regularly worked with many of the UK’s leading orchestras while also being a Professor of Piano at the Guildhall School of Music in London. on McLean is back in Derry for a second year in a row after his sell out tour last year. The Grammy Award winner has amassed more than 40 gold and platinum records worldwide during a career which spans over 45 years. Having at long last just recently divulged the meaning of his classic hit ‘American Pie’ when it’s manuscript sold for $1.2m at auction this year, it will now be possible to listen to Don singing the hit number live and finally know it’s true meaning. Named as ‘Song of the Century’ by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2001, it has always been known that the start of the song, “the day the music died” was a reference to when he heard the news that Buddy Holly had died in a plane crash with Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper in 1959. In an interview which was

published in the online auction catalogue he said, “basically in American Pie things are heading in the wrong direction,” and went on “it is becoming less idyllic. I don’t know whether you consider that wrong or right but it is a morality song in a sense.” The online catalogue states that it is safe to conclude that references to the king mean Elvis Presley, Helter Skelter refers to the Charles Manson murders, and “the jester on the sidelines in a cast” is Bob Dylan. “I wanted to capture, probably before it was ever formulated, a rock and roll American dream” said Don. Don Mclean is one of America’s living legends and has always been a major concert attraction in the U.S. and throughout Europe, with the 2015 ‘The American Troubadour’ tour being his 20th nationwide tour of the UK and Ireland.

Don McLean will be performing for one night only at the Millennium Forum on Tuesday, 2nd June at 8pm, with tickets from £22.50.

hristy Moore needs no introduction. Having been a household name for many years, and known for his passionate vocals and stage presence, Christy Moore is undoubtedly one of Ireland’s greatest folk icons. Having been no stranger to our city over the years, Moore returns once more, this time accompanied by the Mairtin O’Connor Band. O’Connor himself is one of the most respected and best loved musicians ever to emerge from Ireland, he is known to be one of the main musical forces behind the legendary Riverdance, through his work with De Dannan, Midnight Well and Skylark. The passion Moore shows, whether it be performing on his own in the centre of a stage accompanied only with a bodhrán, or surrounded by a band, still remains undiminished and spine tingling. level we demand. For many it is a long journey, during which we get them involved in community projects and slowly raise the bar until we feel they are ready to do a big, professional tour, like Benefit. The demands are intense. The last thing I want is to put pressure on people who can’t take it. We need to be sure they are in a good place because acting is a surprisingly hard game. You have to be realistic about where people are in their lives.” Benefit follows three intertwining stories bringing to the forefront true stories of those who have been affected by the failing

welfare system. ‘Sanctioned’ the story of Rosa and her troubles of claiming Job Seekers Allowance, ‘Zero’ follows Craig and his wife who are on zero hour contracts, and finally we hear Patrick’s story as his incapacity benefit is being constantly scrutinised. Devised through a series of workshops by acclaimed writer Ronan Carr and directed by emerging director Gary Crossan, this is a hard hitting piece of theatre dealing with online safety, vulnerability and relationships. Stage Beyond is a theatre company for young adults with learning difficulties based in the Millennium Forum in Derry. reating Contradictions is the first Solo Exhibition from Lisa Kelly. Since graduating from Liverpool Hope University in 2014 with a BA Hons in Fine Art, Lisa moved back home to Derry where she set up her own studio and began working on a whole new body of work. In ‘Creating Contradictions’ Lisa’s explores the nature of human nature and our tendencies to create contradictions. With themes of time, lust and absence becoming recurring features throughout the exhibition, her portrait paintings offer a counter-weight to the ‘selfie-culture’, describing the depth of personality and contradicting the shelter provided by the filtered selfie. We talked to Lisa about her fine art background and inspirations for her upcoming solo exhibition this month. So tell us about your art background? When I was young, I grew up around artists and I always knew that I wanted to go to University and study fine art. I went to Liverpool, Hope University to their Creative Campus where there was a great creative community, and it was brilliant. Liverpool now has the biggest collection of Art outside of London, so it was great, I really loved it.

Have you always specialised in painting? It was mostly painting at University, and mostly portraits, but I starting to get into photos and the use of text during my course. I literally painted during my whole time in the course, but when it came to my degree show I started to work with old family photographs and set up a polaroid series. The project was about routine, based on the 52

weeks of the year comparing the important things we do and the absolute random things we do. What would be your main influences in your paintings? I suppose I would say social realism comes out from my paintings, the economy and things like that. Although ’Creative Contradictions’ starts quite dark, I think it has positive undertones with the freedom of the paint, which is helped by the use of oil paints. I usually base my paintings on my own experiences. Have you had much interest in your work so far? I sell some of my paintings on EBay, and most recently I sold 6 paintings to a guy from Norway which was a surprise and great. How do you see your work developing? It’s just spontaneous at the moment. Personal experience, and even just wee things like conversations with people, things that happen in the world, and I suppose that’s what will direct it. This year I set up my studio with the intention of making my work technically stronger, and hopefully I’ve done that, but I don’t try to be too contrived about what I will come up. Lisa’s exhibition ‘Creating Contradictions’ will run in the Craft Village from the 19th June - 3rd July. The opening night takes place from 7pm, and is open to everyone, with free admission and complimentary drink available. The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers are now calling for submissions for their National Original Print Exhibition which is due to take place from Tuesday 15 – Sunday 27 September this year. The exhibition was established by the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, with the aim of promoting the best of printmaking to a wider audience, with a call for all forms of printmaking to be entered. The exhibition will be housed in the Bankside Gallery in London, a

well-respected gallery and is situated in a great location next to the Tate Modern on London’s South Bank. There are many reputable names on the judging panel also, such as Michael Barratt, the President of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and Ciara Philips, a 2014 Turner Prize Finalist, to name but a few. urrently on display at the CCA Derry-Londonderry is Common Patterns. An exhibition by Swedish artist Anna Adahl, Common Patters examines the conditions of the ‘mass ornament’, a concept by Siegfried Kracauer in which he created theoretical methods of analysing circuses, photography, films, advertising, tourism, city layout, and dance. Anna explores the Mass Ornament in her own work where she looks at how urban patterns and the choreography of our own bodies within the city shape our behaviour and status. Using video, sculpture and ready-

made objects which may be associated with control, order, decoration and display, the exhibition also acknowledges the gallery space and incorporates the relationship with the viewer making them interact with the exhibit. ‘Second Skin’ is one of the core touring exhibitions developed for the Year of Irish Design 2015 by the Design and Craft Council of Ireland. To date the exhibition has toured to the National Craft Gallery in Kilkenny and to City Hall in London. Second Skin posed a challenge to four Irish fashion labels - Jennifer Rothwell, Joanne Hynes, Natalie Coleman and Lennon Courtney - to design, source and produce a garment or range of clothing on the island of Ireland and to document the opportunities and challenges in doing so.
