Derya Muratli Interior Design and Architecture Portofolio

ABOUT ME “My name is Derya and i m half Italian and half turkish but was born and raised in Luxembourg , this is probably my most used phrase when meeting people. It might be confusing but yes it is possible to have three nationalities. Growing up in Luxembourg not only allowed me to speak many languages but also helped me to be open minded and to learn about many different cultures. Anywhere I go I always find something to relate to and throughout the years i managed to develop a large cultural vocabulary. Apart from my strange backround I do have a passion for art and design in general, but particularly i learnt to love interior design and architecture. During my Bachelor at UCA Canterbury, I have learnt how to think conceptually and develop designs. I particularly enjoy designing through storytelling.

WEARABLE ARCHITECTURE City Printer

Wearable Architecture was the first design brief that encouraged to develop a deep knowledge and understanding of place and peoples reaction and connection to it. Rather than emphasizing the exceptional, the sensational or the spectacular, the concept of the ‘infra- ordinary’ focused the students attention on those everyday things we often take for granted the obvious, the mundane, the habitual, the parts of every day life that go unnoticed. Working in a small group, we started the project by mapping the ‘infra-ordinary’ themes and patterns encountered on the given site. Based on these investigations, we developed, assembled and deployed an intervention along the High Street which allowed us to test our designs in a ‘real life’ situation. In very straight forward terms this was a phenomenological study of the built environment, an exercise in ‘seeing’ place, so that the ‘see-er’ would become more sensitive to the events as they occur within the context of every day life and space.

On the intitial derive, the group investigated different infraordinary aspects in canterbury, such as light, shadow, colors and textures. As the project evolved, it was decided to focus on only the element of texture, more specifically the texture of the streets and pavements through the city. Thanks to different experimentation methods it was possible to collect data that would help analysing the various floor textures which then consequently helped the design process. The groups aim became to build a device that would make the viewer that is wearing the device, notice the different textures on the ground through an unsual manner and at the same time enables the viewer to collect data. The device consists in a timber structure, containing a printing mechanism that picks up the texture on the floor and reproduces it on a roll of paper that wraps all the way to the front of the device. The paper not only acts as a data collector but also is purposly placed in front of the users view in order to limit the sight on the surroundings enabling only to focus on the textures, that are usually present on the ground at eye level. 03

ALL GO MARGATE Tailoring Margate

The project required to investigate the complex issues associated with coastal town regeneration, in an effort to develop a design proposal This project focused on the development of a design that could accommodate a live/work space for a skilled professional (long-term occupant), temporary accommodation for an apprentice (local resident) and a public space for both the professional and apprentice to interact with other members of the local community and tourists. Students were allocated a profession associated with the livery companies and they were then given the freedom to construct their own narrative scenario, addressing complex issues associated with public and private space, as well as cultural led regeneration.

While visiting the area and site i noticed the unfortunate decay that margate has been and still is going through. what once used to be a holiday resort today is an abbandoned city with a population of elderly, unimployed and political refugees. There is a lack of young workers and so the economy tends to struggle too. there are still signs of hope as one of their main attractions “dreamland, recently reopened. The site which is a charity shop, is located by the seaside and so the upper floors have a beautiful view. The highstreet is also located near by, where i noticed that most buisnesses are mainly charity shops and second hand shops. The client, is a tailor who is looking to live and work in the space together with his apprentice. In order to connect the client and the context i developed a program which allows the comunity of margate to get involved with his activity. People would donate their old clothes and fabrics to the shop, where the tailor and the comuntiy can work together and recycle the old fabrics to create new ones. The concept was then translated architectully by inserting a new steel structure of platforms into the old brick building in order to create a contrast between the new and the old materiality

DESPITE EFFICIENCY Tailoring Margate

In collaboration with aberant architects, the students of UCA Canterbury created an exhibition space dedicated to celebrating waisting time at work. The designed space accomodates visual pieces by various artists within the same theme.

The exhibiton is located at the herbert read gallery in canterbury, working together with aberrant architects this installation was created to expose art pieces within the theme of waisting time and procastination at work. We came up with the idea that the intervention would invite visitors to sit on an office chair and roll around the installation underneath a lowered suspended ceiling that mimics the cliche ceiling of an office. along the ceiling, viewers are led into lit structures that contain various artists work. The work exposed inside the strucures are mainly videos that are projected or shown on mounted screens. Not only there are works to be seen in the inside of these “pods, their outside shell exposes pannels thats were specifically created for the exhibiton. They show different timelines of working places throughout history and they can be seen by standing up in an opened spot through the suspended ceiling.

ADAPTIVE REUSE End Performance

Remaining in the theme of labor the project ,which was situated in the jefferey museum in east london, consisted into designing a space that could accomodate two work activities in the same area.

This particular project allows two acitivies that seem completly clashing to work together in the same space. while Ballet dancers practice their routines, a group of software developers work on their complex coding programming. Even though these two jobs seem completly different, they still go through the same stuggle of labor. By researching their daily lives and schedules i came across the fact that even though one leads a sedentary life and the other a physically active one, during the day while one performs an physical activity the other one sits and the same the other way around. as a consequence when it came to designing the space i translated their timeline into materiality by placing a new platform structure in the museum that would change its thickness throughout. There are four stages that each activity prepares for and so there are four different thicknesses in the steel structure which then lead to the lightest one being the last stage of their labor.

Even though the sturcture is a timeline it is not chronologically followed. The end stage is located in the middle which is the end of a project and performance for both acitivies.

TENSEGRITY

In collaboration with the MA course, and Nick Westby of Westby and Jones we participated in the construction of a full scale tensegrity pavilion on the lawn at the heart of UCA’s Canterbury campus.

The project started by experimenting the tensegrity, with different models and maquetes in order to find a way which could make the possible structure stand. The structure with the most success was the one with six legs, which was then built on a larger schale outside our university. A total of 42 structures where built which were then placed on the grass, forming a spiral shaped maze here people can walk into.

SOANE’S CABIN Rebekah Brooks vs Hilary Mantel

The Soane interventions were a series of student responses to the brief of a hypothetical three day party held in the Soane Museum to celebrate the 190th anniversary of the arrival of the sarcophagus. Numerous luminaries from contemporary arts, politics and media culture were ‘invited’. Students designed a minimal living spatial intervention to accommodate two of these individuals at a specific location within the building. A secondary element of the proposal was refined into a portable device that could be deployed to multiple locations elsewhere in the museum.

The design of the installation will be shaped according to this fact, and so leading it to become a tent for this “sleepover where Rebe=kah brooks will be making aphrodysiac beer in order to contribute to the party and to prevent Hilary Mantel from getting agressive during the night. The design will be shaped according to the specific occupant providing them with everything they need during the three day party. The installation will not only provide them a place to sleep but also a space where the guests can make something to contribute to the party. In addition the designed space

MILLENNIUM PERFORMING ARTS

Located in an existing dance and performance school in Woolwich, for this project I will be examining the feasibility and potential for a major refurbishment and reworking of the building to meet their future educational needs. .

the school itself has an exellent education system and very skilled staff. The building on the other hand is quiet poor and dates from the late 40s. Located in woolwich, the school isn’t out of place as i discovered that other artistic comunities are present the same area. So perhaps this project was so designed to welcome these surrounding comunity into the building by creating a public space. The students can benefit from this for educational and self promotional reasons.

WORK EXPERIENCE IRD Roma

While working for an engineering firm IRD in rome, i was required to help them create visiuals and diagrams which then they would send off for their contracts and presentations. In this project i had to design a truck park on a motorway in qatar that could fit 492 trucks and provide services such as hotels, restaurants and shops.
