edition13JUNIOR YEAR BEGINS
ANNASNIPET
Hey Y’all! It in the second week of September. This means...my birthday has passed, thank you for the wishes;those of you that sent them that is! :D The second week of September also means, school has since started for me and the year is underway! My plan was to be less heavy on the classes, and more heavy in fields close to design. SO! For this semester I have a workstudy position on campus where I am a receptionist and create fliers every once and a while. My first day on the job, all I did was assemble chairs, think IKEA like. I have an internship at a design company/studio, that actually the GD department head is in charge of. And no, I did not just receive the postion. It was my first time putting together a resume + small portfolio to show my work; it was a bit nerve-wrecking but all is good, as I was chosen! I did decide though that all of my experience states a lot more than a lot of the work that I have to show these days, hopefully that’ll change soon. Maybe I’ll get some more freelance to do. :) The company is called The New Programme(http://www.thenewprogramme.net/). The focus is on “positive social and political change through engaging the public sphere and fostering community interaction, progressive thought and action, and collaborative creation.“ In KCAI’s AIGA chapter, I am once again an officer. This time I am one of the documentarians. I am in charge of “Documenting all kcai aiga student events throughout the year including but not limited to online curation of photos, videos and interviews.“ I also nominated our current chapter president, and I am very happy that she chose to accept the position. :) I am a mentor to one of the new sophomores in the department! Two seniors decided that the best way to welcome aboard the new sophomores with all the changes we had, as well as let them know they are now a part of the family, was to create volunteer mentorships. Juniors+seniors could volunteer to “have their very own sophomore.“ haha, so I have one and her name is Jodi. I also am friendly with the sophomores in general; sometimes I just wander over to their studio and see what they’re all up to. You never know when someone could use a friendly face or words! I am in three design classes this semester, they are Typography 3, Narrative: Design in Motion, and Human Centered Design. Narrative is being taught by a KCAI 2009 Animation/Illustration graduate who has professional experience. I think this is his first teaching job; I think he is very slowly learning the ropes. I also have this feeling that he is right around my age and something with that just feels odd sometimes. He has grown on me though, I am just hoping that I get the hang of Adobe After Effects by the time class is done. For Human Centered Design, we finally have the department head as a professional. We are currently working on posters that may be chosen by the theater to be used for promoting the events. In Typography three, we are being taught by Kidwell, once again, my favorite sarcastic guy! Our project currently is to choose at least ten poems from Gertrude Stein’s Tender Buttons and create a book or some form of physical asset to house those poems. After an extremely difficult start, I am in a very good position and y’all will see that next edition. I am in one art history class this semester, Southern Baroque...hopefully this art history class goes better than the last two I took; only time will tell. Other than that all...since we last checked in, I have watched a lot of Doctor Who, listened to a ton of new music and slept more than I thought possible. I’m also slowly trying to add in this socializing with the upper classmates; they’re an awesome+my most favorite bunch.
