What is BIM ISO 19650 and how does it support Business?

BIM is a digital information management approach being adopted by the construction industry to improve productivity and quality in building and infrastructure projects, reduce financial losses during construction, and provide a basis for developing future services.

BSI published ISO 19650 in December 2018 as the standard for organizing information about construction works. It sets out the concepts and principles, delivery phase of assets for the business processes across the built environment sector.

These processes can deliver beneficial business outcomes to asset owners/operators, project clients, their supply chains, and those involved in project funding including reduction of risk and reduction of cost throughout Project Life Cycle.

BIM is presented not only as a 3D tool for managing digital information but also as a new approach in managing projects where digital information is being exchanged between contract parties at all stages of a project, including design, procurement, commissioning and construction.

Both ISO 19650 Part 1 and Part 2 are oriented towards the design and construction phases of a project and are primarily intended for use by those involved in the procurement, design, construction and/or commissioning of built assets and those involved in delivering asset management activities, including operations and maintenance.

ISO 19650 describes the Common Data Environment(CDE) as a single source of information for any given project or asset which is used to collect, manage and distribute each element of the information model using a managed process.

With today’s fast project timelines, tight margins, and growing clients Businesses can no longer afford to waste time and money on inefficiencies due to poor field-to-office communication, outdated information, and rework. To stay competitive, they must adopt innovative approaches.
