There is free Wi-Fi throughout the building, of course, and we have a well-stocked library and a digital ‘language lab’ so you can practise speaking and listening to English.

International House London is an Educational Charity With no shareholders to pay, all of our financial surplus can help us to follow our main objective: to develop international understanding through language and teacher education.

Teaching in Piccadilly in the 1980s

We provide a full-time teacher to teach homeless people with little or no English. We also train highly skilled people at IH London who need a good IELTS score to get into paid employment.

We provide funding for six IATEFL scholarships to enable teachers from other countries to attend the annual conference. A new Brita Haycraft Better Spoken English Scholarship was introduced in 2013.

In 2012 we started a new partnership with STAR (Student Action for Refugees) to develop language teaching support for volunteers from over 30 university groups across the UK.

International House Trust provides a substantial programme of free or low-cost lessons both in English as a Foreign Language and in Modern Languages to disadvantaged people in London, widening access to those who might not be able to afford the full cost of such courses. Those benefiting include unemployed people, au pairs and others who can demonstrate their need. Each year around 3,000-3,500 such students attend courses. These courses are provided by supervised trainee teachers as part of their own training.

Making new friends

I went on the weekend to cities near here, like Oxford, Cambridge, Bath, all organised through James.”

The Social Programme at IH London is extremely popular. It offers all students the opportunity to experience London and the UK’s cultural highlights and top attractions.

Our Social Programme is extremely popular and helps you practise English in real life situations

It also enables you to practise speaking English in real-life situations – not only great fun, but an excellent way to improve your understanding of the language, speed up your progress and make new friends. Typical outings include: • The London Eye • Madame Tussauds • Wembley Stadium • A West End show, such as The Lion King We also arrange day trips to some of England’s other popular cities, such as Oxford and Windsor, as well as a Eurostar trip to Paris. Getting out and about in London helps you take the language beyond the classroom and into daily life.
