Hear Penalosa explore themes of sustainable mobility, urban parks, accessible public spaces, thriving bike-ways and more. Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, where he led the design and development of more than 200 parks, Penalosa holds a Masters of Business Administration from University of California, Los Angeles’s Anderson School of Management, which recently ranked him as one of the “100 Most Inspirational Alumni” in the school’s history. He has also received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Urban Planning at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Penalosa was named in Planetizen’s Top 100 Most Influential Urbanists. To date, Penalosa’s cosmopolitan experience, pragmatism and passion have led to speaking engagements in more than 350 cities worldwide.

Installing a sustainable desert landscape requires knowledge about cultural conditions and the proper sequence of installation. In this five-week program, our experts guide you through appropriate methods and progression of building a landscape. Students have the opportunity to install a landscape with Habitat for Humanity. Learn how to install earthworks, irrigation systems and plants. This program has prerequisites that must be completed prior to registration. Registrants must have previously earned the following certificates: Planting and Maintenance Certificate and Sustainable Desert Landscapes Certificate.

Using the Garden as your outdoor classroom, take advantage of our living library and learn how to identify commonly used desert plants. Insightful horticulturists with deep knowledge of the Garden’s collection guide students through making informed plant selections and placements. Ideal for professionals and homeowners.

This three-week class series covers basic techniques for turning a five-gallon nursery plant into a living piece of outdoor art. Join Elsie Andrade and Joan McCarter as they share the essentials of styling a bonsai plum or lantana plant. In this classroom session, learn what it takes to capture them both from equipment and camera mechanics to exposure and shot composition. Sunset and Moonrise in the Four Peaks Wilderness Area Thursday | Sept. 12 | 5 - 8 p.m. Members: $260 | General Public: $325 Rising from desert foothills northeast of Phoenix, a major mountain with four peaks stands out from others in Tonto National Forest. Join us in the field as we capture both the setting sun and full moon as they rise over this dramatic mountain area. This is an excellent opportunity to use skill and techniques gained in this series’ introductory class. While all digital camera owners are welcome, this class is most appropriate for DSLR and mirrorless cameras. Participants’ should bring camera, user guide, tripod, wide-angle and telephoto lenses. A cable release and flashlight are highly recommended. Transportation from the Garden is included. Topics include advanced exposure techniques, metering, how to achieve sharp focus and merge technical and creative aspects of photography. This fun and trendy photography style has infinite creative and practical possibilities. A great activity for indoor sessions and low-light days, flat lay photography can produce stock imagery, greeting cards, business cards, posters, advertising, marketing, wall art and more. Photographing Fall Colors Saturday | Sept. 7 | 2 - 4 p.m. Members: $40 | General Public: $55 This class will give you the knowledge and tools necessary to capture the fall season’s palette in beautiful images. Topics will include mastering exposure to achieve maximum color, composition and design, and how to get the most from your camera, lenses and filters. This class is open to all digital camera owners. Manual Photography 101 Sunday | Sept. 8 | 1 - 5 p.m. Members: $80 | General Public: $95 Tracy Battaglia guides you through simple exercises to begin mastering the perfect exposure while shooting manually. Forget auto-settings and learn her three pillars technique. Tracy will teach you how to understand aperture, shutter speed and ISO. All DSLR photographers welcome. Students should have a working knowledge of their camera settings. Some photography practice in the Garden is included. Formal instruction ends at 4 p.m. Instructor will be available for questions and extra help until 5 p.m. Limit 10.

One of the top birding places in the U.S. and home to the brilliantly colored Elegant Trogon, the Chiricahua Mountains will mesmerize you with hidden secrets designed for the Garden. Experience life as a naturalist as you stay and learn at the American Museum of Natural History, Southwestern Research Station. Participants must be able to walk at least two miles with moderate grade changes and uneven terrain. Limit 12.

PLAN AHEAD Sulphur Springs Valley Weekend: Cranes, Wine and Archaeology Friday - Sunday | January 10 - 12, 2020 Members: $799 | General Public: $949 Each winter, sandhill cranes gather in the Sulphur Springs Valley of southeastern Arizona. Watch these majestic birds fly into their midday resting area-one of nature’s greatest wildlife spectacles. We will seek many other species of birds and will have docent-led tours of the Rex Allen Museum and the extraordinary archeology exhibits at the Amerind Museum. Explore new tastes with tapas and wine at a local vineyard to round out the weekend. Prominent author and naturalist Lynn Hassler, and Garden docent and former President of Audubon Society of Portland Carlos Oldham, will lead this three-day trip. Students meet at the Holiday Inn in Willcox on Friday at 2 p.m. Trip concludes at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Limit 8. Arcosanti Adventure Thursday | Oct. 17 | 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Members: $199 | General Public: $249 Take an intimate look at Arcosanti during this guided site and architectural tour. Explore the grounds, get a detailed history of the project and begin to understand the ethos of their work. This site continues to be developed as an experiential learning center and a lifesize model of how to pursue efficient, lean alternatives to urban sprawl. Arcosanti follows the motto of “doing more with less” by using less energy, less pollution, less waste of space and material to create a more efficient community. After exploring the site, stay for a lunch buffet at the Café at Arcosanti before returning to the Garden. Please bring sunscreen and wear clothes that correspond with the season. Not all of the site is accessible by wheelchair; contact rcosta@dbg.org for details. Transportation will leave from the Garden promptly at 7:30 a.m. and return at 3:30 p.m. Limit 10.

Deer Valley Petroglyph Tour

Established in 1948, Rancho de los Caballeros is a family-owned and operated ranch resort situated on 20,000 acres of beautiful Sonoran Desert in Wickenburg. Cowboy naturalist Richard Fredrickson leads a hike around the Hassayampa River Preserve located near the ranch. Get a first-hand look at the surprisingly diverse plant life, hundreds of bird species and other animals of the Sonoran Desert ecosystem. Be sure to bring along a sketchbook or camera. The loop walk is approximately one and a half miles long with minimal elevation change but does have some short selections of loose rocks and gravel. A delicious buffet lunch is included. Transportation from the Garden departs promptly at 7:30 a.m. and returns at 3:30 p.m. Limit 10.

Visit the Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve on a private guided tour, taking an in-depth look at the preserve, diverse regional wildlife and the 1,600 petroglyphs on site. Learn about Southwest archeology, rock art and the prehistoric cultures of Arizona who left their marks in Deer Valley thousands of years ago. Escape into the history, society, cultural diversity, art and science of the desert’s past. After the site tour, explore the museum for deeper context and a chance to find a souvenir to take home. Transportation is not provided. Participants should arrive at the Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve by 9:45 a.m. A boxed lunch will be provided after the tour. Limit 20.
