elcome to the Coachella Valley. Palm Springs and the nearby cities make up one of the most diverse and entertaining regions in the country. You think you know us for one thing, yet there is always something more. We thought we would go out on a limb and share a few favorites of the locals. These hidden gems are the kind of places we introduce to our friends. Just don’t say you heard it from us. Everyone is looking for a place to eat that offers great food. We found a little gem a while back that surprised even us. The word on the street is that the Hard Rock Hotel had a Michelin 3-star chef update the menu at The Kitchen. Michelin ratings are hard to get and harder to maintain so that means you’re in for a treat if you drop in. Their website advertises The Kitchen as embracing “the laid-back spirit of the desert, while providing exceptional cuisine and high-quality service in a music-inspired atmosphere.” Try it out, and let us know what YOU think.
The challenge with the secret places is they are often tricky to find but worth the trip. Have you head of the Parker Palm Springs? It is an exceptional resort. Recently they opened a wine bar called the Counter | Reformation. You have to go through the resort lobby to find it but once there, you are treated to a wonderful wine list and delicate nibbles. We’re fans. You should try it. What if you’re looking for a place to search out valley antiques from a wide range of eras. Victoria’s Attic Antique just opened a second location in Palm Springs. Spend time searching out vintage, collectables, mid-century modern items for your home and way more. Plan on spending some time there if you drop by. Hopefully, you like our little insider’s guide. uestion: What do you do when you’re surrounded by mountains, clear mountain air, and beautiful locations of cultural significance? Answer: take a hike. Try these local gems and be safe. Tahquitz Canyon 500 W Mesquite Ave Palm Springs / 760-416-7044 Trailhead: Located at the Tahquitz Visitor Center. This is a moderate, guided nature hike with waterfall, rock art, plants & wildlife along with a visitor center. You’ll go aboubt 3.5 miles and gain about 300 feet of elevation. Plan for a few hours. Palm Springs Art Museum Trail 101 N Museum Dr, Palm Springs Trailhead: Starts at the Palm Springs Art Museum This trail is a moderate 2 mile trail which will get you about 900 feet of elevation. Plan on 2 hours or a bit less. Once you’re at the top you’ll find picnic tables and a killer view of the valley. Local note: don’t park in the Art Museum parking lot. You run the risk of getting ticketed. This trail does cross the North Lykken trail and the Skyline

Ridge trail so you can plan a bigger adventure if you’re so inclined. Hiking the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway Mt. San Jacinto State Park offers 54 miles of hiking trails located within a 14,000 acre pristine wilderness, one of the last in California. All trails are accessed by exiting the Mountain Station and descending a concrete pathway to Long Valley. There you will find picnic tables, the ranger station, flush toilets and several easy trails. Desert View Trail A 1.5 mile (2 km) loop trail leads to a number of scenic overlooks and forest views. Short climbs, moderately strenuous. Round Valley A 2.5 mile trail leads to picturesque Round Valley. Fairly level trails, short climbs, moderately strenuous. San Jacinto Peak This is a 5.5 mile hike one way and will take you to the second highest point in southern California. On clear days it is reported that you can see Catalina Island or the glow from Las Vegas at night.

he terrain here covers a wide range of skills suitable for the city cruiser martini rider to the Cat 1 Hammerfest Roadie. Flats, climbs, and sprinting, it’s all here. Make sure you visit us for the 20th Annual Tour de Palm Springs on February 9th and 10th, 2018. Enjoy a 10, 25, 50, or 100 mile course and see the best of the valley. If you plan to ride in the desert you MUST be away of the impact the desert temperatures have on your body and your need to hydrate. DO NOT head out when the sun is high and temps are 105 degrees with only a single water bottle. Riding in the June, July, August timeframe is best done at sunrise. Temps are typically in the 80 to 90 degree range, the traffic is light, and you’ll be done in time for coffee before the sun’s heat can get to you. The roads in the valley are generally cyclist-friendly but you’ll also find a few areas where you might find it a bit tight with the traffic. There are miles and miles of good quality bike routes marked on Google Maps. Here are a few of our favorite routes in Palm Springs: Palm Springs City Loop in Palm Springs.Flat and generally city traffic. Lights react to cyclists. You can easily do 10 miles follow these bike routes and see the City of Palm Springs, some of the best Mid Century Modern neighborhoods, and close up views of the mountains. Ride south into the residential area and climb up to Indian Canyons park gates for stunning valley views. The Aerial Tram Road Climb In N. Palm Springs This is a solid climb on a two lane road so be experienced. Expect 3.7 miles at a 9% average grade. You’ll gain 1,858 feet and will know you got your work in. Top climbers like to do re-

peats of this road. The best time of day to do this ride is early AM to beat the traffic, and the descent will get your heart racing. Bike Routes in Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage The roads running East-West have the best bike routes marked. If you travel on Gerald Ford Dr, Frank Sinatra Dr, and Country Club Dr, you’ll find the best bike lanes that are generally flat, with a few hundred feet of climbing over 10 miles. The lights are far apart and sensitive to cyclists. Palms to Pine Highway 74 in Palm Desert This is a fun climb that is perfect for repeats. Expect to go 3.8 miles up at a 4% grade. You’ll gain 815 feat in this Cat 3 climb. It’s popular, and you can expect to pass or be passed as you climb. The asphalt is smooth on the generous shoulder. During the day expect heavier traffic. The view of the valley from the top is worth the trip alone. La Quinta Cove rides If you get into La Quinta, the neighborhood tucked in close to the mountains is called La Quinta Cove. There are lots of quiet residential roads and a few main roads with bike lanes marked. You’ll see lots of fellow cyclists enjoying the 3% grade ending at Bear Creek. In the early days, it was “Christmas in July” for the benefit of local residents who found the summers boring. The FireCliff Lodge served up turkey dinners and the carts were all decorated for Christmas.
