You just awoke and remembered a wild dream. Someone chasing you, a terrifying fall, and some random friend you knew back in high school was watching the whole thing? What’s it all mean? And why are you dreaming in the first place?

Philosophers and psychologists from Nietzsche to Freud have long tried to determine why we dream. It was Freud who famously theorized that dreams represent our unconscious desires and thoughts. We’ve come to understand that dreams are most likely a way for humans to process emotions, memories, and even fears. But the truth is, no one really knows why we dream or if dreams mean anything at all.

Most people’s dreams fall into a few familiar patterns. The first three dream types involve lots of action: falling, being chased, and flying. According to experts, if you dream you are falling, you may be afraid of something occurring in your conscious life. Falling from a very high height could mean something in your life isn’t going well, you’re feeling stressed, and it’s time to make a change. Being chased could suggest you are avoiding something in your real life, such as having a serious talk with a loved one or meeting a deadline. And if you dream you’re flying? This could mean you’re feeling independent…or conversely that you long to be free from the responsibilities of your life.

Other common dreams may seem a bit strange. A dream you are naked in public could suggest you have imposter syndrome, you feel like a fake or a phony in some part of your life and you’re afraid it will be revealed. Losing your teeth in your dream could represent insecurities about your appearance or that you worry about your ability to communicate with others.

And what do people who randomly pop up in our dreams mean? Dreaming of a celebrity—which according to Google searches is very common—could mean you long to be noticed and fulfill your own potential. Dreaming of old friends could suggest something from your past is still bothering you.
