XERISCAPING AN INTRODUCTION FOR BEGINNERS While we call the desert our home, it’s important to keep in mind how we can live in harmony with the natural environment. We may not have the robust forests that the Midwest does here in the valley, but there are still countless ways to natively introduce effective greenery into our living spaces. Particularly, in a way that is mindful of our desert’s most important resource, water. According to wateruseitwisely.com,
Up to 70% of water use is outdoors.
If you are considering your landscaping in a way that is reflective of the natural desert climate, here are some tips. 1. Check with your subdivision regarding what you can and cannot do before planning any major landscaping changes.
5. Consider skipping fertilizer for native desert plants. They have adapted to nutrient-deficient soil and it would only increase their desire for water.
2. T he best source of water is rainwater. Research grading and learn how effective it can be at capturing and directing water around your yard.
6. Remove weeds early. Preventing them from flowering also prevents them from returning. Not to mention, they steal quite a bit of nutrients and water from the ground.
3. The most efficient way of saving water is by implementing a comprehensive irrigation system.
7. Research pruning before trying for yourself. Improper pruning can cause plants to use more water than is otherwise necessary.
a. Understand how much water your plants need. b. Group them by their water consumption. c. Use differing types of irrigation systems for the right plants. d. Consider looking into smart controllers and devices to assist you. 4. Adding mulch to your yard has a multitude of benefits, such as keeping roots cooler and preventing losing water through evaporation.
8. Plant native trees, such as the Chilean Mesquite, in strategic locations around your home. Not only for their very low water needs, but also to save on electricity in the summer months from their shade.

PLANNING
INTO THE NEW YEAR Now that we are on our way into 2024, it’s a good time to consider planning out the year if you haven’t done so already. Aside from any new year’s resolutions, have you outlined what this year will look like for you? It’s all about setting a good foundation to help you feel more prepared. It’s not about perfection, it’s about long-term improvement.
