After looking at the statistics above it’s natural to feel disappointed. But as much as we may pine for the values of 2004-2008, our desires don’t affect value. “Perception is not what is, … it’s what man thinks is.” In our market today, the perception of home values has changed. As much as we don’t embrace this change, we must remember that values are what the market will bear. OF HOPE Tiny hands placed on a page. Draw around them with a simple crayon and there you have the beginning of a community circle of hope. The new Phoenix Children’s Hospital “Art Advisory” of Arizona business leaders is promoting a year ‘round program called “Handprints of Hope”, to help more tiny hands draw well into their futures. Each small hand is one of the young patients at Phoenix Children’s battling cancer. Dan Williams, Founder and President of The Williams Real Estate Company is the Chairman of “Handprints of Hope” and has created this initiative after spending time at the hospital drawing with the children and realized there could be much more in the way of donations from their precious artwork. “We’re a unique philanthropic real estate company, and have purchased the children’s holiday cards for years, but now we can promote and sell their wonderful artwork all year to raise much needed funds.” SUPPORT The Art Project at Phoenix Children’s was created many years ago not only to help support the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, but involve the children in art and craft projects that help them cope with their illness. Cancer treatment has come a long way, but it’s not enough. In the 60’s, only four percent of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer, survived. Today, the survival rate is 94 percent. Even with these strides, we still lose children. GIVE BACK Together with co-chairman Bill Rogers, President of Homeowners Financial Group, these formidable and committed businessmen are enlisting other business leaders who want more community give-back in their business. Businesses statewide are invited to get involved with “Handprints of Hope” by joining their monthly mixers, which showcases new exciting artwork from PCH patients as well as meeting the young courageous artists and their families. From numerous industries – insurance, retail, sports, real estate and more – business leaders take the artwork on the road to their meetings, sales appointments, family and friends to sell. All donations go directly to the PCH Foundation, Art Project. REWARD Just watch the face of a child enjoy a day at camp. Experience the joy of a child at camp without the pain of illness. These donations fuel many programs for cancer survivors, their families, research, state-of-theart diagnostic equipment and lab services. Phoenix Children’s Hospital provides all of these services and more at no-cost to families. We invite you to become involved in the reward of children and their future “Handprints of Hope”!

More than ever, charities depend on people like you to support their important work. But how can most of us make a difference, especially when we are so busy planning for our other financial goals? The answer may a life insurance policy. A life insurance policy can transform a small giver into a substantial donor, and serve as a great replacement vehicle for your heirs if you gift other assets to charity during your lifetime. There are two main options you can use to structure your charitable gift using life insurance as the funding vehicle: The Life Insurance Endowment Option and the Asset Replacement Option. Our economy has taken its toll on the working poor. Consider their children, and then consider their odds to enjoy their childhood, a loving and educational setting, as well as the emotional support of highly trained and committed educators. Consider Phoenix Day…a small, but highly capable community “diamond.” As the model childcare program for Sesame Street in 1970, the brainchild of Joan Ganz Cooney a graduate of North High School and famous founder of the Children’s Television Workshop, Phoenix Day, a non-profit childcare center has been building futures of children and families for almost a century. The Williams Real Estate Company, Arizona’s philanthropic real estate organization, discovered this quiet and reliable community safe haven and is now working to support its endeavors through donating real estate commissions upon successful transactions, as well as volunteerism and community events. In the shadow of one of the most celebrated sports venues in the heart of downtown Phoenix, sits the oldest continuously operating child development center in Arizona, Phoenix Day. Rain or
shine, good times and bad, a small but mighty charitable endeavor has provided unwavering and affordable early education childcare and healthy child development to working poor families through several wars, a depression and several recessions! Phoenix Day is a snapshot of the core and stamina of our society – hard working families, single mothers or fathers depending upon their daily jobs in order to provide a typical healthy and educational experience for their children. For over 94 years, Phoenix Day has opened its doors to working poor families. The Junior Guild of Trinity Cathedral founded Phoenix Day in 1915. It opened to provide essential services for families during World War I. The first childcare center was born to help mothers who entered the workforce to support the War efforts. In 1938, it became one of the first childcare centers to enroll and integrate children of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. In the 1980s the Arizona demographic changed and so did Phoenix Day in support of instituting a bilingual child development focus to assist the growing Hispanic population.
The mission of Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC®) is to advance research and provide a lifetime of support for individuals with autism and their families. To meet its mission, SARRC provides programs that are: • Family-centered—from early intervention through adulthood, SARRC supports and empowers families to be the best educators and decision-makers possible for their children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). We recognize parents as the child’s earliest and best teachers, and are a major factor in treatment success and favorable outcomes; therefore, we involve them in every step of their child’s journey. • Inclusive—SARRC provides inclusive environments throughout all of its programs. SARRC’s Community School is the only school in Arizona to implement best practices in an inclusive learning environment where children ages 1-5 with and without disabilities learn side-by-side; and typical peer mentors are enlisted for teens enrolled in SARRC’s vocational CommunityWorks program. The strategy is two-fold: we extend the learning process for individuals with ASDs by exposing them to typical behavior, and we
Expanding its reach in the 90s, Phoenix Day began services to include Bilingual Case Management, Volunteer Coordination and Health Links assisting families by providing access to free or low-cost and adult insurance, health resources and referrals and coordination of wellness programs. More recently, Phoenix Day created Budding Artists, art programs for preschoolers, Think Tank, Ninos Sanos, and Health Links Heroes. Committed to the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of all children, Phoenix Day accepts children from 6 weeks old to 5 years. Today, the childcare quality is provided by qualified Early Childhood Educators who receive continuing education in their fields of expertise. Children who attend have the unique opportunity to experience curriculum which has been specifically designed for Phoenix Day through community partnerships and collaborations in education. The Williams Real Estate Company encourages our community to make a contribution – no contribution is too small to impact one child. help the community at-large better understand and value our special learners and include them in the fabric of our communities. • Research-based—SARRC is committed to unraveling the mysteries of autism, advancing discoveries, and providing evidence-based interventions and programs that improve outcomes and the quality of life for all individuals on the spectrum and their families. SARRC is proud to consistently rank among the leading institutions in terms of recruitment and enrollment of subjects in research studies and clinical trials. • Individualized—since autism involves a spectrum of disorders, SARRC recognizes that one program does not meet all the individual needs of our clients. Therefore, our staff of professionals is armed with information and resources to tailor programs according to the individual and his/her family. • Collaborative—SARRC’s historic growth corresponds to its spirit of partnership, and since collaboration is critical to SARRC’s success, we approach our work with mutual respect and professionalism. SARRC works collaboratively with a multitude of agencies to achieve common goals. Partners include national and local autism agencies, research organizations, medical facilities, universities, school districts, and local and national corporations and businesses. • Impact-oriented—over the last 13 years, SARRC has grown from a small research organization to a strong presence in the autism community by developing and

The Life Insurance Endowment Option The Life Insurance Endowment Option is easy to establish: Your favorite charity is simply named the beneficiary of a life insurance policy on your life. Through this technique, both you and the charity reap important benefits. You benefit because you can make a major gift for a few dollars a year. When the charity is the policy owner and the beneficiary of the policy, the premium payments may be income-tax deductible for you. Finally, your gift is self-executing and proceeds are paid promptly. The charitable institution benefits too. They are assured a source of future income. The amount of the gift is certain. There may be possible access to cash surrender values, and they have total control of the program if they own the policy. The Asset Replacement Option With this option you make a tax-deductible gift to charity (cash, stocks, bond, real estate, or other assets). Then you purchase a life insurance policy, naming your heirs as beneficiaries, to replace the property you “gifted.” The money you save from the income-tax deduction could be used to fund the policy premium. You benefit, because your gift may qualify for an incometax deduction. You can also place the gift in a trust to provide you with income while you are still alive. Plus, your gift may escape estate taxes after your death. And finally, after you are gone, your heirs receive insurance benefits equal to the amount of the asset you gifted. Likewise, the charitable institution benefits because the amount of the gift is certain. If you opted to place the gift in a trust, the charity can control the asset during your lifetime by serving as trustee and they are assured of a source of income. enhancing programs to meet the ever changing face of autism. In our last completed fiscal year, 2008, SARRC provided early intervention and educational services to more than 1,100 children, teens and young adults enrolled in programs, 4,800 parents and family members and more than 9,000 educational and medical professionals and paraprofessionals that work with children with ASDs and other related disorders. Throughout its history SARRC has helped break down barriers to fully realize and appreciate the abilities of individuals living with autism, with the ultimate vision of having a society where individuals with ASDs not only fit in and become accepted, but contribute to the betterment of our communities.
