Mr. London goes to London
By Joanne Winer Elmer London, longtime resident of Quartzite, was surprised when he got word that he was invited to go to London, England for a very special celebration of the veterans from WWII who served in England. On May 8, 1945, Nazi Germany surrendered to the Allies, and this was the 70th year since that day. Elmer was one of many veterans from all around the world who came to England to join in the commemoration of this day of Victory in Europe (VE). His grandson Matt, who now resides in London, England, went with Elmer to the events as an escort, and their days were filled with all kinds of exciting things. SEE LONDON PAGE 10

2 arrested in drive-by shooting By Shanana Rain BearCat Quartzsite- AZ- In the quiet town of Quartzsite a driveby shooting took place Saturday, May 16th. Evidently it was a targeted shooting, not a random act of violence. A family member of the victim said there was a planned one-on-one fight planned, but the victim backed out. Quartzsite Police Department has arrested the alleged shooter and a female. The following is the press release issued Monday morning. “On Saturday, May 16, 2015, at approximately 4:16 PM, Quartzsite Police Department (QPD) was called to the scene of a shooting at the intersection of Palo Verde and Main Street in the Town of Quartzsite, Arizona. This information was provided to the QPD from the La Paz County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher from a 911 caller. QPD Officer Conley and Sergeant Frausto arrived on scene and observed numerous individuals and a Hispanic male, later identified as Roberto Chavez, Jr., bleeding with a single gun shoot wound to the upper arm and back area. The Quartzsite Fire Department was dispatched to the scene where the shooting victim was airlifted to West Valley Hospital in Phoenix with serious injuries. A short time later, QPD located the described

“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” ~Francis of Assisi I sure felt like I was doing the impossible over the past few days. When a shooting happens in our small town, during the slow, quiet time of year, it draws a lot of attention on social media. When I promoted Quartzsite Chatter on Facebook in last edition, I knew more folks would be participating, which is great. As evident this weekend, rumors can spread real fast. Saturday a friend of a friend of someone involved posted unconfirmed information and it was difficult to watch the inevitable furvor. Our police department does not have a designated Public Information Officer, such Officer James Holmes we often see speaking to Phoenix reporters. I recently had the pleasure of attending one of Officer Holmes’ workshops for law enforcement. Hearing from the police officers’ points of view was enlightening. I can understand why it takes (what we think is) so long to get information

Sometimes it’s good for us to remember our police officers are doing the best they can when they must deal with these difficult and unusual situations. WEAR ORANGE JUNE 2
Our daughter, Hadiya, was the light of our life -- and she shined even brighter after performing with her marching band at President Obama’s inauguration in 2013. We never imagined that one week later, she would be murdered with a gun -- shot at a park near her school in Chicago. Hadiya’s high school classmates will be graduating next month. While Hadiya won’t get to walk across that stage, her friends are all going to wear orange on June 2 in her honor -- and to inspire action to stop the gun violence that takes too many lives in this country. We’re writing to ask for your help. Pledge to wear orange on June 2 and show that you’re one of the millions of Americans who believes we must do more to end gun violence in our country.People from all over the country will come together online and in person to declare June 2 National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Hadiya’s friends chose the color orange because it symbolizes the value of human life. Hunters wear orange to alert other hunters that they’re there. It is a way to take care of their own life and the lives of others. For us, it also represents the enormous potential that is lost when a young person like Hadiya is killed. By wearing orange, we reaffirm the right of every American to live a life free from gun violence.
www.DesertMessenger.com This day is especially close to our hearts because June 2 would have also been Hadiya’s 18th birthday. We’ll be wearing orange to honor Hadiya and all the love and joy she brought to our community here in Chicago. Please join us in wearing orange for your loved ones, your city, and our country. Visit the link below to automatically fill out your pledge, and you’ll receive a reminder to wear orange on June 2 for National Gun Violence Awareness Day: http://act.everytown.org/sign/wearorange. Gun violence touches every corner of America. We don’t have to live in a country where shootings happen every day. If we all stand up together and demand change, we will succeed. Thank you for being part of this movement with us. Sincerely, Nate and Cleo Pendleton

MUAC to discuss options of metering private wells for volumetric sewer reads Special meeting for MUAC Thursday, May 28th at 2pm. The item on the agenda reads: “Discussion of Implementation of private well metering for the purpose of providing volumetric sewer reads.” By Shanana Rain BearCat There was a huge turnout at Tuesday, April 28th’s Quartzsite Council meeting for an item Mayor Ed Foster had on the agenda to discuss metering private wells. Foster explained the topic he wanted was not expressed. He wanted to discuss “water policy as applied to water rates to the town,” however without a formal written request, Town Manager Skylor Miller said he “set the item for a discussion item only so there would be an open discussion.”
Foster started by stating, “There are a lot of businesses in town that have come to me and we have rate for commercial customers, where we encourage them to take city water. If they do, they get a volumetric rate on their sewer.” In other words, commercial properties . Foster wants to propose to a rate structure “to have a meter put on their own well to record how much of their own water is going into our sewer. They would get a reduced rate.” Miller explained some residential properties could be impacted by the discussion. There are 16 RV parks, 16 commercial, 64 residential properties that would fall under the 75th percentile rate structure. Foster said, “Public works is going to customers saying that if they want this they would have to cap
May 20, 2015
their well. Capping a producing well is the last thing we should be doing.” However, Miller said he is “aware of a historical practice, but it’s not a policy practice today.” Foster said some business owners complained to him that they didn’t have sufficient water pressure in January. Miller said, “We struggle with regulating the pressure. It’s going to be a ongoing issue because of the diversity of the user classes we have and lower pressure residential properties.” Miller said the Town has had to scale back to 45 PSI; otherwise they would be popping off residential faucets. (The Arizona Corporation Commission requires only a 20 PSI minimum for private water companies in Arizona.) Miller said, “We’re getting new booster pumps at the Quail Trail well to help restructure the flow.” Regarding Foster’s proposal, Miller explained there are billing issues involved and there would have to be more research on billing in-house. Members of the public commented that this discussion should have been presented to the Municipal Utilities Administrative Committee (MUAC) board, before going before council. After much discussion, Council directed staff to take the item to the MUAC board for further discussion, research, and public input. The MUAC board had changed their meeting schedule and only meet quarterly, but there is now a special meeting planned for this discussion Thursday, May 28th at 2pm at Town Hall. The public is invited to attend. For more information, contact Town Hall at 928927-4333. The Town website is ci.quartzsite.az.us.

WIC moms learn what to eat while pregnant or breastfeeding and how to feed their growing kids, especially picky eaters. Moms get WIC checks that can be used at grocery stores and farmers’ markets to buy healthy foods for their family. WIC helps moms with breastfeeding, too. Moms do a lot and WIC is there to help a little. Many families do not realize they can participate in the WIC program, even after their baby turns one. Spread the word, encourage all the moms you know with kids under age five to visit www.azwic.gov today and find out if they are eligible.

Senior Citizens Center is open, get out of the heat come join us.
Contributed by Violet Kiss Things have wound down in our home of Quartzsite this month. Hope you are enjoying that and our not-so-hot weather so far. All of the town’s gardens are surely happy for this and the additional periodic rain. Happy “el Nino”. We have two announcements for you. One is our Annual Scholarship winner for 2015 from Salome High School. For those of you who do not know our procedure for scholarship applications, an involved teacher or guidance counselor endorses a student who wishes to apply. Then the applicant attaches that endorsement along with all of their credentialed transcripts including all of their high school grades. Finally, an essay is required of the student describing their interests for college, future plans, any participation in sports, clubs, honors, and in any or all outside community involvement. When we receive these criteria, members read them, discuss, and then vote on the finalists. The finalists are brought in soon after and asked to give their presentations to us and we have a final question and answer session. Following, we have our final vote and with a majority vote, the winner is chosen. No one outside of the membership knows the winner
The Senior Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 3 PM each day with lunch being served at noon for a donation of $3.50. | S M (PHOTO Left to Right): Amy LoPresti, Jennifer Wilkinson, Steve Schue

All of us hope that you all keep in touch with us to let us know how you are doing. The second item we’d like to announce is our newest member, Amy LoPresti, who I am sure most of you are aware she is also our new Branch Manager at Horizon Community Bank since January 26th. We are very happy to have her here and having Amy with us. Welcome, Amy (and with that great smile)! Happy Memorial Day, everyone. Please, one and all, please come out to Town Park for fun and family picnics!

LONDON FROM PAGE 1
Elmer is planning to put together a slide show and show it at the Senior Center sometime soon for all his friends to see--his grandson Matt took over 1000 photos and 22 videos!! It may take a little while to sort that all out!! The first day he was there, there was a special wreath laying at one of the cenotaphs, and he loved the bagpipes that were played. He said the streets were full of thousands of people cheering and clapping as they went by, Just before the ceremony was to begin, the crowds became silent, as they waited for Big Ben to chime 3:00, the time the surrender was made. The Duke of York laid the wreaths, and speakers included Winston Churchill’s grandson and the Lord Mayor of London. Saturday was spent touring around London and the Thames

River areas. And, on Sunday, there was a parade of all the veteran attendees to Westminster Abbey, where the Queen and Prince Philip laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. There was a flyover of Spitfires and Hurricanes, and lunch was in 3 huge tents with a special dance and singing. This was also attended by Prince Charles and Lady Camilla and to Elmer’s surprise, Lady Camilla waved back at him and spoke to him at the luncheon. The plane trip was 9 hours each way, and Elmer came back just more than a little tired from all his grand adventures!! Thanks to his grandson Matt, he got to experience this great celebration, and now has over 1000 photos to look back at, as well as 22 videos-this was truly a once in a lifetime adventure!! Congratulations Elmer!!!!

Yorkies on drug awareness mission By Shanana Rain Golden-Bear Quartzsite, AZ – A husband and wife team from Hesperia, CA, with their four mini Yorkshire Terriers, have set out on a drug education bicycle tour across America. The group stopped in Quartzsite May 11th for a short break and to tune up their bikes. Virgil “Evan” Tanner and his wife Lacey, along with their four furry companions, Bug, Doodle, Cecil and Hazel, are riding in honor of Virgil’s brother who died from an accidental overdose. They ride with the hope of keeping their tragic loss from happening to other families. The couple began their travels in San Diego, CA on April 27th and are pedaling to reach St. Augustine, FL by July 15th. Along the way they stop in hundreds of towns to spread education and understanding to people about the harmful effects of drugs. Virgil said, “Two years ago my brother, Damon, died after taking two painkiller pills that weren’t prescribed to him to comfort an injured knee so he could get some sleep. The side-effects stopped his breathing and he never woke up. It was a sudden shock that has torn a hole in my family.”
He said they are just average Americans, not professional cyclists. They decided to get off the couch and ride for drug awareness so that maybe this won’t happen to other families. “When I learned that my brother had died I was devastated. He’s gone and there is nothing we can do about it—except ride in his honor,” said Virgil. As they travel the husband and wife duo are stopping at schools, Boys and Girls Clubs and community centers to hold drug education seminars that focus on educating kids why they shouldn’t take drugs rather than just telling them not to. “If we can help just one person realize how unsafe drugs are, it’s all worth it,” said Virgil. “We want to help kids, and adults, understand what can happen from the harmful effects of drugs. We give them facts and share true life stories of other kids who overcame a drug problem,” said Lacey. And Lacey and Virgil are not alone, the Yorkies are tagging along the whole way; towed behind in a bicycle cart. These little friends have a combined weight of a mere

20 lbs. and wear tiny anti-drug t-shirts to do their part to help raise awareness about drug abuse. The little cuties have cool pads and collars to keep them comfortable in the summer heat. “If you see us in your part of the country feel free to stop us and say “Hi” or give the pups a pat. Tell us your story about how drugs affected someone you know and we will put it on our website. Some stories, like Damon’s, may not have a happy ending but it is the courage of sharing them with others that get people to pay attention and make a change,” said Lacey. After visiting Quartzsite, they will continue eastward until they reach the Atlantic Ocean. This 3100 mile journey will take almost 3 months. With local supporters cheering in each town they will ride ever onward handing out “The Truth About Drugs” booklets and asking people of all ages to sign a pledge to be Drug-Free, which will then be sent to Washington DC. “Because of the help of so many individual people sponsoring and

supporting us the planning for the tour has been a great success. And we can’t say enough about the generosity of our Main Sponsors Hawaiian Moon Skin Cream and American Botanical Pharmacy. Because of these people we were able to get most of the education supplies and equipment needed to even make this happen. But we still have quite a bit of ground to cover and still need help. We’re asking people to please go to our website www.Bike4DrugFreeUSA. com to see how they can make a difference too. If all we do with this trip is save just one life then it will be worth it because that one life is important and belongs to a family that will mourn,” said Virgil. For more information about the Drug Free Bike Tour go to www. Bike4DrugFreeUSA.com Virgil, Lace and the Yorkies would love to hear from you. They answer every contact personally each night after a hard day’s ride from their camping tent with the Yorkies by their side.

ADVENTURES WITH ROCKS™ In the footsteps of the ancients One of the most amazing places we have visited were the pueblos of New Mexico. New Mexico isn’t called the Land of Enchantment for nothing. The ancient history of New Mexico truly is enchanting. Some of the pueblos in New Mexico are ancient cliff dwellings long abandoned, but some of them, like Taos Pueblo and Acoma Sky City are over 1000 years old and still inhabited. Taos Pueblo and Acoma Sky City are easily accessible, while some of the others are more remote.
Pueblo woman. The “restaurant” dining room was a large picnic style table with chairs at each end and a futon in the middle of the front room of her small pueblo home. About 10 total people could eat comfortably in that cafeteriatype arrangement. I was seated with another couple and a family, so we still had plenty of room for a few more people. The food was cooked to order in her personal kitchen and her husband brought the meals out to the table when they were ready. The food was delicious and the hospitality was top notch. Off the beaten path north of Santa Fe is the absolutely gorgeous Bandelier National Monument. Here, the ruins of pueblos coexist with cliff dwellings built into natural crevices in the walls of Frijoles Canyon called cavates. The oldest structures date from 1150 AD. Twelve miles from the Frijoles Canyon area is the Tsankawi section. There are ruins of pueblos at the top of the mesa, and the mesa walls are lined with cavates some with multiple rooms in
Acoma Sky City Pueblo is located about 70 miles west of Albuquerque off of I40. At an altitude of 6460 feet, the high desert surrounding Acoma pueblo is a scenic area full of amazing rock formations and expansive views. The landscape is full of towering sandstone bluffs, and it is atop one of these bluffs, 367 feet in the above the desert floor, where the Pueblo of Acoma was built. The Acoma people have lived at the top of this mesa since 1150 AD, and several families still live either full time or part-time, without electricity, sewer, or running water, in the dwellings there. Many of the people who live on the mesa top make their living by creating and selling traditional crafts, like pottery, or traditional breads and pastries.
Taos Pueblo is located just outside the City of Taos. The oldest buildings in the Pueblo were built between 1000 and 1450 AD. Approximately 150 people live full-time in the Pueblo. They live in dwellings without electricity, sewer, or the modern idea of running water. There is a river running through the center of Taos Pueblo, and one of the people said to me, “We have running water here, we have the river.” At Taos pueblo, some of the people are craftspersons, while others sell food made fresh, and sometimes to order, in their homes. One of the best Indian tacos I have ever enjoyed was made by a native Taos
them. The most intriguing aspect of Tsankawi are the ruts, some two feet deep, of foot trails, steps and handholds, that wind throughout the mesa, worn into the soft sandstone by thousands of feet and hands traversing the same paths for hundreds of years. It is truly an experience to travel these same paths while visiting these ancient dwellings.

Hope you’re having a great summer, and we’ll see you in Quartzsite in the fall.
Visiting the pueblos is refreshing to the soul. At the top of the mesa in Acoma, at the base of the mountain in Taos, within the bosom of Frijoles canyon it is quiet. It is ancient and sacred. There is a peace there that is not found in the modern world. When walking in the footsteps of the ancients, the stresses and problems of life fade away, and the spirit is rejuvenated. The land, the sky, the rocks, the plants, the birds and animals all speak to one’s soul. We need only to slow down enough to hear what they have to Thanks for your business this winsay. Sit in a cavate and look out over the desert or the canyon. Find ter. And don’t forget, Life is Short! a quiet spot along the river in Taos Go Outside and Play. Pueblo and admire the mountain. The sweet potato - good & good for you! By Lyle Browning UA Extension Connection Program Coordinator Many of us regard the sweet potato as a food we eat as part of a holiday meal. The fact is this thickened root of a tropical vine may be the heathiest food you can eat. All the studies we looked at in preparing this article rank sweet potatoes number one in nutrition when all factors are considered by a wide margin over the number two food, and they can grow and thrive here. Sweet potatoes need a long, hot growing season. At least four months of growing season is required and we have that here.
There are not many requirements other than hot weather and a well-drained soil. Regular water is required and not much else. There are two types of sweet potato. One has sweet soft yellow flesh and the other a firm whitish dry flesh. The best time for planting is when soil temperatures reach 60 degrees at night (usually the last half of April.) There is plenty of hot weather left for the plants to reach maturity. Most seed companies sell “slips” or budded parts of the skin. If you want to try growing sweet potatoes, we can help locate the “slips”. Contact us at 928 669-9843 or visit our office any week day. We are located at 2524 Mutahar just off Shea Road in Parker.

I just woke up, and because stories are like birds and fly away if you don’t write them right away, I’m going to give this a try, but I’m warning you: I AM NOT AWAKE YET. I woke up writing this story in my mind, as is often the case. I will tell you a secret: I don’t really write the stories; they just kind of come through me. They start in my head and magically come out my fingertips. I think of myself as kind of a recorder. I never have to think up stories; they are just there. But I digress... I often dream and don’t remember them the next morning, but last night’s dream was SO real that I’m writing it even BEFORE my first cup of coffee. It was about dentists. I know: not very interesting....You see, I’ve been having a toothache, and since I was going to Lake Havasu on another matter, I made an appointment with my dentist. “Hmmmm,” he side, “The tooth has a crack in it; you need to see a specialist about a root canal because I don’t do them.” Five minutes and $70+ dollars later, I had an appointment with the root-canal guy. “Well,” he said, “you have quite a large crack in this tooth. I could do a root canal, but I’m not sure it would work, and you’d have to have a crown besides. That’s a lot of money for something that might not work.” “What would you do if it was your tooth,” I asked. “Pull it and get an implant,” he replied. Ten minutes and eighty dollars later, I drove the 150mile round trip back to Quartzsite. The next day, my tooth was fine -- no doubt shocked into healing due to the hundreds (thousands?) of dollars in possible dental bills. So the tooth is on hold for now, which brings me (finally) to last night’s dream. in the dream, I was in Flagstaff for a routine teeth cleaning, and I told this story to my regular dentist, Dr. Maurer (whom I love). After I woke up, I realized the dentist in my dream was actually the manager of the Flagstaff Senior Center,

Matt Faull (whom I also love). Both guys are young, tall, good looking, extremely competent, and have great customer-service skills. (I was going to say “a great bed-side manner” but was afraid readers might get the wrong idea.) AND, they didn’t do a thing about my tooth.....at no charge! Another thing about dreams is how REAL they are. I particularly remember a most enjoyable visit with my mother -- much better than any visit we’d had when she was alive! There was another joyful visit with my wonderful dog (Joy ToTheWorld) also deceased. I woke up from both with tears in my eyes: tears of happiness, grateful for the experience. In a recent dream, I was parked by Ace Hardware in Parker. While talking with someone, I placed my keys on the bed of a pickup truck parked behind me. When I was ready to leave, I discovered the pickup had left, along with my keys. Nothing to do, I thought, but go inside the store and begin the tedious process of trying to see if anyone knew the name of the truck’s owner. Luckily, I woke up at that point and was thankful I didn’t have to go through with the plan, saving me a lot of time, energy, and stress...even if it was only in a dream. Then, there’s romance. I have romantic dreams fairly often (well, not often enough!). Since I’m not in a relationship right now, I see those as icing on the cake, cream in my coffee, a bit of serendipity; you get the idea, and that’s a good thang! (Now....for that cup of coffee.) ***** Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. ~Langston Hughes *****
I park overlooking the long, sandy beach and decide to take the nearby loop trail. It begins in deep, soft sand and continues past houses with ocean views. My goal is to walk all the way to the point and open space. When I arrive, there are few people on the beach, just an occasional empty blanket to mark their presence. The return path narrows as it winds through chest-high grasses topped with bunches of yellow, daisy-like flowers. Several steep paths lead down to the beach. More people here; many quite far out because of the low, low tide. Some struggle to fly kites in the wide expanse of blue sky. Farther up the beach campfires glow. I love to see people play in a world where work and money have become our god. ~Seaside, Oregon

May 20, 2015 driven to get it, in the process you are a changed human being. The values you live by have gone by the way side, replaced by newer and better ones.
Sagittarius: Nov. 22 to Dec. 21- “I Perceive”
Astrological Perceptions by Barbara Lee Aries: March 21 to April 19- “I AM”
It is not Christmas outside but the energy around you feels festive. The friendships you keep will bring someone new into your life that will brighten your attitude beyond anything you have experienced in recent times. This person has a karmic present for you, it is unexpected and appreciated.
Taurus: April 20 to May 20- “I Have”
The canvas of your life is blank, sometimes answers to a prayer may come in unexpected ways; eventually you can make sense of the message. None the less, you are at a fork in the road; the path you choose can be new or the same old same old stuff. It is clearly your choice and what you are willing to live with.
Gemini: May 21 to June 20- “I Think”
It is about time that you finally have all your energies working together and headed in the same direction. Over the years your values have changed but only from outside forces. This time you have truly realized what you have lost and are ready to take full responsibility for your part.
Cancer: June 21 to July 22- “I Feel”
You are experiencing some intense emotions regarding a prominent female figure in your family. The wise can teach you a great deal if you are willing to learn and listen with your heart. They need to be heard and understood, and that takes love and understanding which you are capable.
© 2015 Barbara Lee Leo: July 23 to August 22- “I Will”
The energies in your life have pulled the rug out from under you. The nurturing aspect of your life has changed and you are on the edge of depression. Even though there are plans for travel and vacations, delegate your money wisely just in case of income fluctuation.
Capricorn: Dec. 22 to Jan. 19- “I Use”
You have your hands and arms full this month planning parties and celebrations, and some activities could be centered around humanitarian concerns. There is also the possibility of new children in your creative environment. The message for you is to have fun and play hard.
The energies in your home are fluctuating, residents may move out, or you may move, anyway no matter how you look at it there is unexpected change in your home environment. Get clear with what you want or don’t want and create your life by intention not by default.
Virgo: Aug. 22 to Sept. 22- “I Analyze” You have an opportunity this month to make a profound difference in a life of a younger person, in this situation there is a true sense of humility in giving of yourself. This is a Karmic debt that you are meant to pay off. This connection will serve so many lives for the highest good of all concerned.
This month your focus is on your creations, maybe thinking about writing a book, a study course, but most likely your children and grandchildren. Fun will be the most important ingredient in everything you do this month. Lucky you a large sum of money finds its way into your hands.
Libra: Sept. 23 to Oct. 22/23- “I Balance” You are always so centered on everyone else, being in a relationship, helping others and searching for someone. This month your greatest strength is having the strength in your own dreams and following your path even if it is with just yourself for a time.
Scorpio: Oct. 23 to Nov. 21/22- “I Transform” Transformation is your middle name this month. You are willing to remold yourself and your life on all levels. When you want something you are
PUZZLE PAGE ANSWERS (from page 18)
Aquarius: Jan. 20 to Feb. 19- “I Know”
Pisces:Feb. 19 to March 22- “I Believe”
This month you are in great spiritual service. So much has happened to so many people you know, your heart is wide open with compassion. You are truly a beacon of light loving and supporting so many. The gifts you share are appreciated by many. Your efforts will not go unnoticed.
