Youth enjoy Radio Science Day 2016 By David Anderson On January 13, 2016, the Quartzsite Community Center turned into a Radio Science interactive exhibit with over 10 stations, bringing over 250 students, teachers and community members from around the county, together to have fun while discovering and exploring areas of Amateur Radio and Radio Science. The organizers, Gordo West WB6NOA, Tracy Lenoker WA6ERA, Neil Hays W6FOG, Heather Caton W8GEM and David Anderson K1AN, along with over 30 volunteers from the Quartzsite Amateur Radio Association and the

La Paz Co.youth win statewide competition Young People in Arizona Step up and Serve the Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith and Family Youth-Led Challenge

The Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith and Family has announced that La Paz County has been declared the winner of the friendly competition between all fifteen counties for the most youthled service projects logged on the Governor’s Youth Commission website at BeSeenBeHeard. az.gov. The competition began on October 23, 2015 and ended on January 23, 2016. During that time, youth organizations from across the state logged an impressive 44,723 service hours. As the second-least populous county in Arizona, La Paz County led the state with 56 youthled service projects, 752 youth

volunteers and 5,647 service hours. For the past few months, the youth were very busy planning and implementing projects throughout the county. One youth group served food at the community senior center annual luau party. Another youth group collected over 1800 pounds of food to be distributed to families in need. “La Paz County has set the standard for mobilizing youth to take the lead in their communities through community service,” shared GOYFF Director, Debbie Moak. “This award is a testament of how Arizona youth are joining together and inspiring other youth across the state to help build a better future for Arizona.” The Governor’s Youth Commission seeks to form a collective voice, mobilizing youth across

the state to bring about positive change. Along with the service competition that concluded in January, all Arizona youth are encouraged to participate in the Global Youth Service Day on April 15-17, 2016. Arizona was ranked number one in the world in 2015 for the most projects completed. Along with the service competition that runs through January, all Arizona youth are encouraged to participate in the Global Youth Service (GYC) Day on April 15-17, 2016. Arizona was ranked number one in the world in 2015 for the most projects completed. Locally Quartzsite Boy Scout Troop 116 will participate in the Town of Quartzsite’s Annual Arbor Day events. They’ve already registered with GYC for the Park cleanup and weed pickup. Congratulations to the youngsters of La Paz County!

SAFETY wherever you are

Natural gas lines can be buried anywhere. So it’s important to know how to recognize and respond to a natural gas leak...no matter where you are.

A leak may be present if you: SMELL: An odor similar to rotten eggs, even if it’s

faint or momentary. HEAR: A hissing or roaring sound coming from the ground, above-ground piping, or gas appliance. SEE: Dirt or water blowing into the air, unexplained dead or dying grass or vegetation, or standing water continuously bubbling. lf you suspect a leak: Leave the area immediately. From a safe place, call 911 and Southwest Gas at 1-877-860-6020, day or night, whether you’re a customer or not. A Southwest Gas representative will be there as soon as possible. Don’t smoke or use matches or lighters. Don’t turn on or off any electrical switches, thermostats, or appliance controls; or do anything that could cause a spark. Don’t start or stop an engine, or use automated doors.

For more information about natural gas safety, visit swgas.com/safety or call 1-877-860-6020.

THANK YOU FOR DONATIONS

The Friends of the Library in Quartzsite would like to thank the King’s, Mallory’s and Keith and Karen Shoemaker of Redlands Truck and RV for their generosity. Jan. 15, Redlands Truck and RV held their annual customer appreciation dinner here in Quartzsite. Over 600 people were in attendance. They held a 50/50 drawing and raised $800. The Friends of the Library got half. Mr. King gave a $100, bringing the Friends total to $500. Keith and Karen blew us away by matching the total amount with an additional $500 from Redlands Truck and RV. They also encouraged those attending the dinner to visit the

library, donate books to the library and become patrons of the library. Such a wonderful act of kindness sets an example of how we should live. Giving back to the community and those around us. Thank You, Thank You.

THANKS AND MORE THANKS

I’d like to express gratitude to my neighbors at La Posa South for being kind during what has been an extremely stressful winter. When you’re eight miles from town and have to pack your own water, empty a BlueBoy, have your vehicle out of commission for 3 months, is a major disaster. Especially when you’re living below the poverty level and mechanics charge $80$100/hour. I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia and Adrenal Exhaustion, as well as EMF sensitivity. Some days I can barely get out of bed, or walk. No vehicle is a major survival issue. 

One of my absolute favorite stones is jasper. It comes in just about all patterns and colors. Jasper can be found all over the world. Some of the best known deposits come from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Japan, South Africa, Egypt, India, Madagascar, Mexico, Russia, Indonesia, Venezuela, and, of course, the United States. Here in the US, jasper can be found in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Idaho, Oregon, Texas, and Washington. Like chalcedony, Jasper is a microcrystalline variety of quartz (silicon dioxide), but what separates jasper from chalcedony is that it contains up to 20% of foreign materials. Typically these foreign materials, called impurities, are hematite, pyrolusite, clay, or calcite, and it is these impurities which give it the characteristic grainy structure and opacity. In fact, the crystalline structure of jasper is so dense that it can only be seen under high magnification, and scientists have con-

sidered putting jasper into its own category within the quartz family. Jasper forms as solutions of mineral laden quartz percolate into veins and cracks in volcanic rocks, and often forms with or near chalcedony and agate. Occasionally, jasper occurs in igneous rocks, like the jasper from Germany that forms in granite. The cracks and fissures in which Jasper forms are often created by tectonic activity. In this type of a situation, the jasper will form, and then when another tectonic movement reopens the crack, the jasper will be cracked or shattered. The cracks in the stone will fill with more jasper, often of another color, creating patterns or layers of different colors within the 

The British are coming! Downton Abbey, Masterpiece Theatre, Bernie & Red, just 3 of the British imports taking the US by storm, & one of the three will be appearing live in Quartzsite shortly. Yes, husband & wife comedy & music team Bernie & Red will appear at the QIA in Quartzite on Tuesday March 16th. Regular winter visitors will need no introduction to this zany couple, but if you’re new to the winter scene, let’s just say that Bernie & Red are one of the most popular & wellloved acts to appear in Quartzite. For newcomers, here’s a brief bio. Both were born in Liverpool, married 50 years, resident in Canada, and professional entertainers for over 40 years. They have performed throughout North America & on cruise ships worldwide. Have released over a dozen CD’s & in 2013 published their autobiography/songbook “Our Story”. And they are very funny. Bernie & Red pride themselves on constantly writing & performing fresh & new material every year, & this year is no different. Their brand new 2016 show features new originals, plus their versions of classics from the 60’s & 70’s & a very funny segment about senior discounts AND …….. The Great Carnac will return with all new predictions. Presold tickets are available for this show, call 928-927-6325 for more information. You can follow Bernie & Red on Facebook. www.facebook.com/bernieandred. Or visit their website: www.bernieandred.com

All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt. Charles M. Schulz With Super Bowl Sunday, Fat Tuesday, the Gold Show, and Valentine’s Day being so close this year, I thought I’d mash some ideas altogether. All I need is a chocolate football draped in gold wrapped chocolate beads placed on a large heartshaped chocolate platter and I’ll be happy. Oh, if that only were true! Happiness does not come so easy sometimes. Society is moving at a faster pace more than ever and it’s not easy to keep up. Some people get caught up focusing on the negative in life. It’s easy to become addicted to anger and the rush of adrenaline that accompanies the emotion. Just listen to the nightly news, presidential candidates, or even customers at the local cafe, and you’ll hear chocolate is not the topic of preference. People are frustrated and angry over various issues; everything from their neighbor driv-

ing too fast to government being too involved in their lives, or not iinvolved enough. But then comes Valentine’s Day and they try to get in touch with their gentle spirit just days after yelling at the flat screen TV when their team lost the Super Bowl. We really are an interesting species when you think about it. We can move quickly through emotions...when we want, but at other times, aggressive behavior can cause road rage incidents, drive by shootings or even suicide. It’s that time of year when expectation of “being in love” can create additional stress. So, just take some time to enjoy the little gifts in your life, such as your fluffy little companion and of course, some good chocolate. Savor the moments of watching the sun rising or setting. Then go inside and have a chocolate football draped in gold wrapped chocolate beads placed on a large heart-shaped chocolate platter and smile! Have a little gratitude, too.

So I’d like to thank Rick Van Drusen and Ken Hoffman for technical advice. To Best Auto for trying, at least, to figure out why my van wouldn’t start (electrical short.) And for installing a new ignition for the cost of parts and a “Merry Christmas.” Thank you to Don, who’s probably the best friend I’ve had in ages, who gave me jump starts, rides, etc. and for trying to install a new fuel pump. And to Jim, who did, saving me a mechanic’s fee. And who explained why anti-freeze was leaking and why the engine was spewing black smoke. To Bernie, Jean Stiers, for loaning their jack. And to Pete, Sue Rothberg , for jump starts and for listening. And Troy, who sensed I needed the work done promptly, not in a 10day or 2-week interval. And who did a great job and acted like he actually cared. Because of what I’ve survived in the past 10 years, I’d pretty much given up on people. But these folks have proved there’s still genuine kindness in the world. And it’s not all money “greed.” Christina Blair, Quartzsite

And as for the age difference, I Gypsy Jane did more before breakfast than tells all... he did in a week! February 3, 2016 night, and I was ready to DANCE! Knowing dancin’ almost always lifts my spirits. So thinking back....dare I talk about the men in my life? At my age, there have been a few. (Promise not to add this all up and guess my age. You see, right now, today, I feel about 30, realizing that age is a state of mind, irrelevant really. Some people are old at 20; others are never old. But age is another story to write!) I’ll start with the first man (boy?) in my life -- a bright guy, majoring in chemistry, and one year ahead of me in school. We were “going steady,” (pinned) my junior year of high school. I wore my class pin and his crisscrossed over my left teenage bosom. I was so proud.....but nobody seemed to notice. That was the first disappointment. I can’t remember exactly how it ended, probably because he went off to college. I remember my brother asking about him and my telling him that his goal was to make $10,000 a year. My brother replied, “So he’s into money.” That was a lot back then. Now we’ll skip a few hundred years to last Saturday night at Silly Al’s in Quartzsite, Arizona, where someone said about the men: “The odds are good, but the goods are odd.” (Examples follow...) Nevertheless, I had the most fun dancing I’ve ever had. I don’t mind dancing by myself if there’s a good tune, and it’s pure torture for me not to dance, but this night I was asked to dance by men all night long. NICE! 

Salome High updates Basketball season is coming to a close for the athletes of Salome High School. Both coaches had very positive things to say about their teams’ performances. With two games remaining in the 2015-16 girls’ basketball season, the varsity team sits at a 7-6 record (2-5 in their section) and is within one spot of clinching a berth in the sectional tournament. The Lady Frogs have been very busy during the month of January, and have faced a number of tough sectional opponents. Six of the last eight games have been played against sectional teams including Mohave Accelerated Learning Center, Bagdad, Phoenix Day School for the Deaf, The Odyssey Institute, Tonopah Valley, and Mayer.

Chris Schuldt, head coach of the girls’ team, said, “Although the Lady Frogs have won only two of those games, with their aggressive defense and quick-hitting offense, they have been able to compete and challenge their opponents until the final horn. I am extremely proud to have the opportunity to coach these girls. Despite some heartbreaking losses this season, the girls have maintained their composure and have fought hard in every game. Thank you to all of the friends, family, and community members that have attended our games this season. We hope that you will join us on the road at Arizona Charter (February 2nd) and Mingus Mountain (February 3rd) as we finish out the season.” Matthew Scharboneau had this to say about his boys, “I’m very proud of how the guys rallied together; there were numerous occasions

“Positive anything is better than negative nothing.” ~ Elbert Hubbard

Basket winner During the Quartzsite Improvement Assoc. (QIA) 50th Anniversary Gem & Mineral Show, Pamela Caskey held a raffle at her booth for Operation Hero Comfort, a local nonprofit supporting military units overseas. The on-of-a-kind basket she offered for the raffle is woven with grasses including walnut shells, beads and the center is a metal that reads “THANK YOU FOR SERVING.” Caskey said, “I would like to thank all those who purchased tickets for the basket I raffled off to help with Operation Hero Comfort. The total raised in the raffle was $202.00 and it was my pleasure to turn all the funds over to Anita Carlson so she can have it to help with the mailing of the packages to all those brave men and women in harm’s way. “The winner of the basket was Sherry Harned, a 14-year veteran RN, who was in the Air Force, and after that she served in the National Guard. She and her husband Tim had the Bustin Glass and Minerals vending space across from me at the Pow Wow. They live in Southern Calif. and have a son who is in the USMC. Many thanks to Anita for all she does to run and manage this project and her continued dedication to the cause.”

Rattlesnake avoidance classes at Gold Show By Joanne Winer To most people who have dogs, their pets are part of their family, and they treat them just like one of the kids. They spend all kinds of money buying food, treats, doggie clothing, etc. and think nothing of pampering their pooches. And it should be that way, especially if you are alone and have no family near--you love to spoil them. One of the hazards of living in or visiting the desert areas is the venomous critters that can do a lot of damage to both people and animals. One of the most fierce of these and the most prevalent in the desert here in the southwest are rattlesnakes. Most of the time, these venomous snakes are only out during the hot summer days where you can find them sunning themselves on rocks or under trees or bushes.

The ZIKA Virus La Paz County Health Dept. issued a press release this week: Mosquitos are once again in the news with a Zika virus outbreak. Zika is a virus spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. This mosquito, the Aedes, is the same mosquito that can spread dengue and chikungunya. Zika can cause fever, rash, joint pain, and red/swollen eyes. It is a relatively mild illness that usually doesn’t require hospitalization and lasts only a few days to a week. Symptoms typically start 2-7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. There are significant risks associated with a Zika virus infection during pregnancy. An increased number of microcephaly, or smaller than expected head size, and fetal losses have been identified in babies born to mother who were infected with Zika while pregnant. Babies with microcephaly often have smaller brains that might not have developed properly. At this time, there is no vaccine to prevent or medicine to treat Zika. An outbreak of the Zika virus was first identified in Brazil in May 2015. Since then, Zika has been circulating in several countries and territories throughout the Americas, including Central America, South America, the Caribbean, and Mexico. While Zika has been identified in people from the U.S. who traveled to areas where the virus was circulating, there has been NO documented transmission of the Zika virus within the continental United States. There have also been NO identified Zika cases in the state of Arizona or La Paz County. The best way to prevent Zika and other mosquito-borne diseases, both in Arizona and when traveling outside the U.S., is to avoid mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves and pants, using screens in windows, and applying an effective insect repellant (such as

23

www.DesertMessenger.com DEET). It is also recommended that pregnant women consider postponing travel to areas where Zika is present. Pregnant women with a history of travel to an area with Zika transmission and who have symptoms compatible with Zika or ultrasound findings of fetal microcephaly should consult their primary care physician and be tested for the Zika virus. For more information on Zika, please visit the CDC’s website at http://www.cdc.gov/zika. If you have any questions about Zika, please do not hesitate to contact your doctor or La Paz County Health Department at (928) 669-1100 or www.lpchd.com.

Rainbow Acres Golf Tournament #6 By Linda Taylor It was another beautiful day on the desert course at Rainbow Acres. We had a nice turnout with 3 new players joining us, Merlyn and Verlyn King, our first set of twins to participate and what fun we had getting acquainted. We encourage golfers to come join us to meet new friends and enjoy old ones. Winners for the day were Robert Dickson and Chester Henry who fired a team score of 37 which is 19 under par. This makes 2 times in a row that Robert has been on the winning team! Mac McLean and Pete Lilly teamed up fired another great score of 38 for 2nd place. Third place winner was the team of Russ Leininger and Bud Key who fired 39. Marlow Pounds made his first visit a memorable one by winning 4th place with his partner, Jerry Taylor, as they shot a round of 40. LeeRaye and Tom Chopski

followed closely with their 41 and Bill Toner and Dino Linden were close with 42. The award for lady’s long drive went to LeeRaye Christner, men’s long drives went to Marlow Pounds and Robert Dickson. Winner of closest to the pin on hole #8 was won by Linda Taylor with hole-in-one and closest to the pin on #9 was Jerry Taylor. Rainbow Acres will be hosting the February tournaments on Friday, Feb 5 & Feb. 26. We will start signing up with partners for the our 4th annual Good Guys/Gals vs Bad Guys/Gals Tournament at the Feb. matches. That tournament will be held March 2-3. First day play will be at Rainbow Acres and second day will be played at the town course. There is a delicious hamburger fry and potluck to celebrate the season on the evening of the 3rd at Bill Toner’s residence. Questions? Please call Jerry Taylor 208-405-3311. Hope to see you on the links!

Good Guys vs Bad Guys/Gals Season to end in Scramble & Celebration By Linda Taylor You are invited to play in the golf season ending celebration and scramble tournament to be held Wednesday, March 2 and Thursday, March 3. The first day of the match is played on the Rainbow Acres course and the second day is on the Quartzsite town course. You pick your own partner for the two day event and sign up beforehand with Jerry Taylor. The cost is $6 for the 2-day tournament and $4 if you wish to bring someone with you to the meal. Bring your own chairs and beverage. Tableware, plasticware, meat, buns & condiments will be provided. If your last name starts with A-Q bring a side dish and R-Z please bring a dessert. The wonderful

hamburger and potluck meal to be held at Bill and Dorothy Toner’s home at 5:00 the evening of Thursday, March 3. Their address is 650 W. Saguaro. You may play your matches at anytime Wednesday and Thursday with your opponents. Sign up the foursome you plan to play with and designate one team as “Good” and one team as “Bad”. Whoever wins the match receives one point for the “Good” or “Bad” side. It’s just a lot of fun and no pressure so pair up and sign up with someone you’d like to play with each day. We encourage all golfers to join in the fun and meet some great new folks. Call Jerry Taylor, 208-405-3311, with questions.

Often jaspers are named for their color schemes or patterns. Bumblebee jasper, for example, is yellow and black and brings to mind its namesake insect, and zebra jasper has alternating zebra-like streaks of brown and white. Orbicular jasper has a pattern of orbicular concentric rings, scenic or picture jasper exhibits “landscapes”, and banded jasper is, well, banded. Some other jaspers whose names describe their patterns are leopard skin or poppy jasper from South Africa and Ocean Jasper from Madagascar. Sometimes the jasper is named for the location where it is found. Examples of this are Owyhee Jasper which comes from the Owyhee mountains in Oregon, and Gnandstein jasper, a gorgeous green, pink, and white banded stone from the Gnandstein region of Saxony, Germany. Our famous Brenda Jasper, which hails from Brenda, AZ, is another good example of this creative nomenclature. Jasper has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale and no cleavage, which makes it an excellent stone for cutting,

Pastelite is typically a cream or flesh pink color, with bands or swirls of brown and red. Porcelain Jasper has a similar color scheme with gray and some grayish-green added to the mix. Much of the material found in the Quartzsite area is lapidary grade and will produce excellent cabochons.

He enjoyed making jokes, telling stories, hiking and Studebakers. Most of all, he loved his friends and family and his roll as “El Guapo” (Grandpa).

Norman Nelson “El Guapo” McCauley Norman Nelson “El Guapo” McCauley, age 68, passed away unexpectedly in Quartzsite, Arizona on January 17, 2016. He was born December 10, 1947 in Toledo Oregon to Keith and Fern McCauley. Norman’s family came to Quartzsite when he was 6 years old, he went though elementary school in Quartzsite and graduated from Salome High. He served the Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart after his plane was shot down. He retired in 2006, after 22 years with the US Postal Service.

He is survived by Leslie- his loving wife of 41 years, his daughters Jillian (and husband Sean ludden), Erin (and her Fiance’ Ben Dunn), his granddaughters Avelyn and Hadley, his goddaughter Beckey Juarez, Four sisters Genny Yates, Janet Mason, Carole Anderson, and Liz DiVergigelis. Living the Dream Living the Dream A Comparison of Lifestyles of Liveaboard Life on a 32 foot Sailboat and Full Time in a 28 foot RV By Judy and Aubrey Millard, who retired and sold their house in Toronto in 1998 and have been living full time in their Ontario 32 foot sailboat, or part time in the past five years in their 28 foot Jayco trailer, ever since. Capital Costs – Sailboats, like RVs, can span a wide range of capital costs, from $5,000 to over $500,000, depending on what one can afford and what a person wants to do with the investment. We bought our 1978 used Ontario 32 foot boat for about $45,000 twenty years ago, and have put the equivalent amount into it in maintenance and upgrades since. We wanted a boat that we could live on for prolonged periods of time and that could safely cross oceans. The boat has served us well and continues to do so. We crossed the Atlantic twice, circumnavigated the UK, the Mediterranean and Black Sea, and the Caribbean, sailed the east coast from Newfoundland to the Florida Keys and Central America, and the Pacific northwest from Washington and B.C. to Alaska. Five years ago we bought a used GMC Yukon XL (2006) and a used Jayco Jayflight 28 foot trailer (2007), the cost for both about the same $45,000 we paid for our boat. After living in a 32 foot sailboat, the 28 foot trailer is spacious. We have not had to spend as much in maintenance on the trailer and GMC, but we will have to get a newer vehicle in the next year or so. Operational Costs - are far less on a sailboat than an RV. The wind is free, and the motoring costs of our three cylinder 30 hp diesel engine are far less than the costs of gas for our eight cylinder Yukon. Marina costs are about the same as RV parks, but vary according to the length of the boat. The costs for nightly transient mooring in a commercial marina can be from $.50 to $2.00 a foot. However, we prefer to anchor out in sheltered isolated bays, free of charge. There is no charge for anchoring in most places. We spent months at anchor-

February 3, 2016 free-of-charge in the Great Lakes, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Central America, and the Pacific Northwest. The only costs were for fuel for our dinghy 15 hp Yamaha outboard and food and refreshments. We have solar panels and a small Honda generator to keep our batteries charged up when at anchor, and a 100 amp alternator when our engine is running. In an RV, the gas costs for travelling are a major consideration. The RV park costs, of course, can vary from zero on some BLM lands to nominal $3.00 to $70.00 a day. There are few spots an RV can stay safely overnight without charge. We use Wal-Marts, Casinos and Pilot or Flying J stations when in transit. Facilities - When in a full service RV park, power, water and sewage are provided, with some additional perks such as free WiFi or TV hook-ups. It is the same for boats in a marina, except boats have to go to a pump out system for their holding tanks. Most boats have holding tanks for black water, and the grey water from the sinks goes overboard. However, being at anchor is like dry camping, and boats need to go in to marinas periodically to pump out or get water. Boats can pump out overboard their own black water, but should not do so unless at least three miles off shore. Most boats also have a Y-valve which can allow black water from the toilets (heads) to go directly overboard. In the Great Lakes it is illegal for boats to even be able to discharge overboard. Such systems must be disabled or risk a fine by the Canadian Coast Guard. There are no tides in the Great Lakes to clean out the bays or anchorage waters. Facilities on a boat are similar to RV’s, but more compact. Our boat has a three burner propane stove with an oven. The stove is gimbaled so it can stay level when the boat is heeling under strong winds. It also has fiddles, arms attached to the sides of the stove to prevent pots from moving when the boat is under weigh. Refrigerators in most boats are smaller than those found in RV’s with no or smaller freezer compartments. Most are also top loading fridges as opposed to the standard front door on most domestic and RV fridges. Our refrigerator operates off battery power only, and is the big power hog on the boat. 

DREAM FROM PAGE 36

RV refrigerators are smaller versions of domestic refrigerators, and can operate with propane or 110 ac electricity. At sea or at anchor, many boats will have an inverter to produce 110 power, some powerful enough to operate coffee makers and microwaves. Ours is a smaller 750 watt invertor for light tasks such as charging our laptops, or operating an electric drill. Larger $250,000 to $500,000 yachts will have all the bells and whistles, including powerful generators for all their power needs including air conditioning, hot water heaters, electric winches to raise and lower their dinghies or tenders, etc. For each of our boat and trailer we have a small 1000 watt Honda generator and two 85 watt solar panels. The solar panels are sufficient for charging our batteries in the trailer, but not enough for keeping the batteries charged in the boat when we have the refrigerator running. We then have to use the Honda generator for a few hours every second day at anchor. Our compact galley has a deep single sink with hot and cold pressurized water, as well as a foot pump for overboard water. We have hot water available from a heat exchanger when the engine is running, or when we are plugged in to shore power. In the trailer we have a double sink with hot

and cold water available, the hot water heated by either propane or electricity. We always have to conserve our resources of water, fuel, and battery power, as when at anchor or sailing at sea or along remote coasts or islands, supplies at marinas are hard to find. Trailers are limited in their time of dry camping by the capacity of their water tanks and their holding tanks, but only need to be hauled to the nearest gas station or RV park. Our bed is located at the forepeak called the V birth (seven feet wide at the head and two feet wide at the foot), and has fitted fleece sheets. We have a dining table that when folded out can accommodate up to seven or eight people. The outer leaf can be dropped to make up a ¾ bed for guests. Our trailer has a large queen sized walk around bed with a large storage compartment beneath. The dinette can accommodate only four people. There is also a large full bed pull-out couch. A couple of easy chairs beside the large panoramic rear window provide a tranquil venue for relaxed reading and conversation. The cockpit is like an add-a-room in that it has bench seats on both sides and at the stern (back) with comfortable Sunbrella covered cushions that allow us to stretch out reading or snoozing. It has a hard bimini (roof) and full side curtains, allowing us to sit out in rainy weather or at night. It has bimini mounted reading lights, steering and cockpit instruments (GPS

chart plotter, depth sounder, wind indicator, and engine console), twin speakers from our radio/CD/tape deck and Sirius satellite radio, and a propane barbecue on the stern rail. Outside the trailer we have an awning, a couple of collapsible lawn chairs, and a barbecue mounted on the side wall. Summary - RV life is more expensive due to fuel and camping costs, whereas sailboats use less fuel and can anchor free of charge almost everywhere. In RVs maintenance tends to involve a trip to a dealer as access to the systems on board usually requires a technician with the right tools and equipment. In sailboats the crew can usually do all the maintenance and replacement of defective systems. We know more about marine toilets than we ever thought we would know. We have rewired our boat, but to rewire an RV is far more tricky. One of my wife’s favourite sayings is that “liveaboard cruising give you the opportunity to do maintenance in exotic locations.” Incidentally, she is also a good mechanic, electrician and plumber.

37 We are biased in favour of the cruising lifestyle on our 38 year old 32 foot sailboat, but enjoy the convenience and spaciousness of our 8 year old 28 foot trailer. RV living is easier and more convenient. Liveaboard life on a sailboat is more exciting, dramatic, romantic, and fulfilling. Aubrey & Judy will be making a presentation on their first six years of sailing down the Mississippi, across the Atlantic and into the Mediterranean and Black Sea at the Quartzsite Library at 7:00 pm, Thurs. Feb 11th.

Desert Singles meet Quartzsite Desert Singles meet at the QIA every Friday at 10am for a short meeting. Then we go to different interesting places and have a cook-out. Join us and meet new friends.
