Some riders would pull the horses head in deep or to one side and use strong leg aids, or speedy fast mini circles to put the horse into submission. Maybe a very strong rider less technically adept would have some success in getting the horse under control, but a smart horse would soon learn to turn their selective hearing into deafness and become numb or dangerous in the process. My trainer says instead to find a way to keep the horse always thinking so there is no time for him to let his boisterous side take charge. So if I feel that my horse is in an “I might not listen to you mood “, I very quickly start doing things to keep his mind on me. If you are a good rider technically, you may not even see these things from the ground but you are working silently and subtly to let the horse know that you are there and you are in charge. At the walk, flex a little to the left, then a little to the right--gently to each side then ask a little left leg to see if he moves off

ear off to one side, ask him to move away from the leg or bend a little to the right or begin transitions in and out of the trot. Do not get stuck on one thing and think, “Oh great, this is good”. Do one thing and then think now I should remind him again that I’m here and in charge.

Sometimes

this is all impossible because my horse is having a selective hearing and chaotic stallion day and he wants to have a spin out of control party with me as his guest. In this case, I either have to ride him forward to let off steam or I must close myself around him like a bird protecting its eggs. I make myself heavy, reassure him that I am there and I am stable and I am not going to his party. In either case, a rider needs to adopt this

With these horses it is sometimes better not to try to do too much and just concentrate on a single thing. A horse that is a bit chaotic mentally needs a rider that sticks to a certain pattern and this is where precision can become your greatest tool. If you choose to ride a circle, make it perfect forward and even if you lose attention, focus on your own line and on keeping yourself as direct and as delicate as possible in your aids. I find that if you focus on precision and repetition, these horses will gradually find calm from your technical direction and begin to trust in you to lead them and open their ears up to what you have to say. If your horse has neither of these traits, then a patient caring rider will understand that a horse is a living animal and not a mechanical device. Like us, a horse has its own personality and curiosity about the world around him. On the other hand, if your horse always listens to you and has perfect hearing, well then you are lucky.

ith a strong international reputation, Marian Duncan is a proclaimed perfectionist when it comes to painting Arabian horses. Whilst Marian says she is still learning, her horses are so beautifully formed and fashioned that they come to life before your eyes. With an exceptional eye for detail, Marian`s love of her subject shines through in every work she produces.

Her works are regularly used on the covers of magazines, The Australian Arabian Horse News and international magazines. Original paintings have been sold to collectors across Australia, the U.S.A., Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Jordan and Italy. Marian tells us the beauty and quality of the Arabian horse has no equal, “The Arabian is all about their large dark intelligent eyes, beautiful sculptured faces, large fine nostrils, soft velvet muzzles, curved ears, smooth elegant necks with fine silken manes, balanced bodies with floating movement; their beauty lifts your senses and takes your breath away. Marian continues to study her Arabian horses along with all the trappings that make up the horse; the traditional headstalls and saddles, heritage and environment, body language and indeed every little detail. Marian works in oils on canvas, acrylics, pastel, water/colour, pen/ink and graphite. Marian has three Arabian mares, rides them and understands horses, in their movement and behavior.

USA - EQUINE LAW

Should Your Instructor Use Your Horse in Their Riding Lesson Program? by Julie I. Fershtman, Attorney at Law Riding instructors often need horses for their students to ride in lessons. Not all of them have the right number or mix of lesson horses, however, so instructors sometimes ask their clients to use their horses in lessons. For instructors and horse owners, these arrangements can bring several risks. Here are a few: * If a student is injured while riding or handling the horse, both the owner and the instructor could be sued. * Even if an instructor uses releases of liability (where allowed by law), these documents rarely include language protecting the owners of horses used in lessons. * The riding instructor’s liability insurance policy probably offers no protection to owners of horses that are used in his or her lessons. * Individual horse owners often have no liability insurance to protect against claims or lawsuits related to their horses. Some of these risks can have serious consequences. For Owners Horse owners, before agreeing to allow an instructor to use their horses in lessons, can consider several options, including: * Getting included in the instructor’s liability insurance. Horse owners can also consider asking instructors to name them as “additional insureds” on their commercial and/or professional liability insurance policies. Understand that policies differ. Make sure that the coverage is issued by a reputable insurance company, with limits that are acceptable. Determine whether the policy specifically covers the activities in which the horse will be used. (Keep in mind that those listed as “additional insureds” under liability insurance policies usually cannot make claims of their own against the policies; discuss this with a knowledgeable insurance agent). 24

ARABHORSECOUTURE.COM / VOL. 1 - SUMMER 2016

* Buying your own liability insurance. Regardless of whether the instructor has liability insurance to protect the horse owner, horse owners can consider purchasing their own policies of Personal Horse Owner’s Liability Insurance (sometimes called “Private Horse Owner’s Liability Insurance”). This type of insurance is generally designed to protect the horse owner (and possibly others that the owner may designate) in the event that someone is hurt while riding, handling, or near the horse. In the application, the owner would notify the insurer that the horse is being used in a lesson program. Keep in mind that this arrangement, depending on how the instructor compensates you, might impact your coverage if the policy has a “business pursuit” exclusion. * Insisting that the instructor use acceptable waiver/release documents (where allowed by law). If you and your lawyer approve the release of liability document that the instructor uses, ask him or her to amend the form to specifically include you in the section where the signer agrees not to sue certain listed people and entities. In addition to or instead, consider requiring that everyone of legal age who will ride or handle your horse sign your own waiver/release document. * Imposing conditions on the arrangement and getting them in writing. Horse owners can impose restrictions on the equine professional’s use of the horse, such as: how many lessons a week the horse can be used, what days of the week the horse can be used, minimum skill level of riders and handlers, indemnification agreement, whose equipment can be used, liability insurance, compensation, termination, and several others. These restrictions should be in writing and signed by the parties involved. * Abandoning the arrangement. Risk-averse horse owners should decline the arrangement altogether, especially if no protections are in place.

For Trainers * Protecting horse owners. Add the owners of your lesson horses to your liability insurance policies as “additional insureds.” Your insurance agent can explain the process and details. If you use liability waivers/releases (where allowed by law), determine how to include the horse owners within the list of people the signers agree not to sue. * Learning about the horses used. Horses conveniently loaned to you for lessons might actually be unsuitable for your students because of unique propensities or problems. Ask questions about each horse and evaluate its suitability. This is especially important for instructors because, in several states with equine activity liability acts, those who provide horses for others to ride could potentially

For example, the Texas Farm Animal Activity Liability Act states that a “participant” might have a claim when a “person provided the . . . [horse] and the person did not make a reasonable and prudent effort to determine the ability of the participant to engage safely in the ... activity … and determine the ability of the participant to safely manage the [horse], taking into account the participant’s representations of ability.” Texas Statutes and Codes Annotated, Civil Practice and Remedies Code. Title 4, § 87.004(2). This article does not constitute legal advice. When questions arise based on specific situations, direct them to a knowledgeable insurance agent or attorney.

ORIENTALISM & THE ARABIAN HORSE The Spell of the Middle East Written by Judith Wich-Wenning

The Mamelucks were some of the finest horsemen known to history. Coloured 19th century lithograph by Carle Vernet, from the collection of Judith Wich-Wenning

Since primeval time, the horse has been a favourite subject for painters. Arabian horse lovers, however, admire especially works of art from “Orientalism”. This term refers to the many 19th century artists who specialized in “Oriental” themes. They painted for example, Islamic architecture, lively Arabian market scenes, imposing guards and the endless expanse of the desert. But maybe most importantly, Orientalist artists left a treasured heritage: numerous unsurpassed portraits of Arabian horses.

For centuries Western artists have been fascinated by the exotic world of the Orient. The culmination however was certainly reached in the nineteenth century. A door opener for this was Napoleon Bonaparte’s invasion of Egypt in 1798. It was not only a military expedition but also a scientific exploration. Its science and art commission made up of mathematicians, artists and architects.

Carle Vernet

Bordeaux 1758 – Paris 1836 Antoine Charles Horace Vernet, also known as Carle Vernet, was the youngest son of Joseph Vernet, the famous painter of marine subjects. He was born in Bordeaux in 1758 while his father created his glorious views of the Ports of France on behalf of the French King. Joseph Vernet fostered his son Carle and his artistic talent on a large scale. He encouraged him during his art education and supported him financially. Carle Vernet loved horses since his childhood and immensely enjoyed painting and drawing them. Without a doubt, Carle Vernet is one of the best and most famous horse artists of the 19th

Alfred de Dreux’ very elegant life as a Parisian dandy obliged him to work fast and a lot. In 1840 he started his famous series of portraits from the stables of the Duc d’Orleans. Furthermore, he studied and painted the impressive Arabian horses of Abd El Kadr who was imprisoned in France. Especially the famous Arabian stallion “Tamerlan”, owned by Abd El Kadr, fascinated de Dreux.

Arabian horses. In these works de Dreux played with colors and contrasts. His paintings are very strong works with bold use of color. The horses possess tremendous energy and are often depicted in full gallop. Even when they are painted at a momentary halt, they seem to be ready to leap away in the next moment.

Alfred de Dreux died in Paris in 1860 at the age of only 50 years. His passing remains somewhat mysterious. While many sources state that he died of a liver disease, rumours suggested that he had been shot to death in a duel by Comte Fleury, Napoleon’s aide-de-camp. This theory claims that a dispute over an equestrian portrait of Napoleon III was behind de Dreux’ tragic end. The real background of this remains uncertain.

Adolf Schreyer

Frankfurt amwas Main 1828 – Kronberg 1899 Adolf Schreyer born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany in 1828 as a child of wealthy parents. At the age of 15 years he was accepted as a student by the famous art school “Städelsches Kunstinstitut”. Already as a child, he had great interest in horses and loved to visit stud farms and riding schools in and around Frankfurt. Studying art as well as spending as much time as possible with horses stamped his youth. Adolf Schreyer loved to travel. His journeys lead him to Hungary, Wallachia and Southern Russia as well as to Syria, Egypt and Algiers. Motifs from these two regions – Eastern Europe and Oriental countries – stayed the main subjects for the rest of his life. In 1859 Adolf Schreyer married Johanna Maria Andreae, called Mary (1837 – 1921). Mary Schreyer

Imposing work of art by Adolf Schreyer: “Avant Poste Arabe”, owned by Judith Wich-Wenning

shared her husband’s passion for art and painted under his guidance striking artworks in a similar style. Adolf Schreyer regularly visited Paris, the center of Orientalism at this time. In 1862 the young couple decided to completely move to Paris. At the beginning, life in Paris was not easy for them. But Adolf Schreyer’s reputation as a painter grew steadily and with it his financial success. Especially American art dealers were very much interested in his oil paintings and offered high sums for them. Up to this day many of Schreyer’s artwork can be found in American collections or museums. Millionaire Americans

like

Vanderbilt,

Rockefeller

and

Morgan collected his paintings. With this financial breakthrough, Adolf Schreyer and his wife moved into a spacious apartment in the very center of Paris. They became famous for their generosity and kindheartedness towards their friends and guests but also to their employees. With the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, the Schreyers had to leave their beloved Paris and moved to Kronberg/ Taunus near Frankfurt in Germany. Adolf Schreyer was a specialist in riders and horses in rural settings – a subject to which he restricted himself more or less. Schreyer was very much interested in Bedouin life and mastered several Arab dialects. The color schemes of his oil paintings are characteristic: Monochrome, often brown ground,

Travelling Sheikh with his entourage, masterly captured by Adolf Schreyer. Photogravure from the year 1880, owned by Judith Wich-Wenning Horsemen riding alone or in small groups were his favorite subjects throughout his life. Typically, he did no exact portraits of horse and rider and put no special emphasis on details. His paintings usually have certain universality; they show neither a specific place nor a particular historic event. The horses and riders have an air of freedom and pride around them – a distinct dignity and honor. Adolf Schreyer was a very productive artist. His paintings were already in high demand during his lifetime. Many of his pictures were directly sold from his easel. Adolf Schreyer died as a highly respected painter in Kronberg in 1899. Up to this day, his paintings reach enormous sums at auctions and sales.

A

t the age of 20, and after fashion studies at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, Stéphane Rolland’s talent was recognized by Balenciaga, who hired him to work on the menswear collections, and promoted him to Creative Director within a year. Will follow at 24, an opportunity for the Balmain licenses, which will lead him to design high quality uniforms for over 170 of the World’s most prestigious companies. But it is in the world of Haute Couture, his absolute dream, that he would find his place. Aged 30, Stéphane Rolland began to work for Jean-Louis Scherrer, becoming the youngest French Couturier on Avenue Montaigne, Paris. His collaboration will last ten years. At the same time, fired by his passion for the cinema and the theatre, Stéphane Rolland simultaneously worked as a costume designer – in 2006 and 2007

nominated for the prestigious Molière awards for “Amadeus”– and became an official partner of the Cannes film festival for five years. At 40, Stéphane Rolland sets his own future in total independence, defines the rules and visions of a new luxury concept, dynamic and exclusive, and opens his own House. On the 2nd of July 2007, he presented his first eponymous Haute Couture collection at his salons of the 10 avenue George V in Paris.

From international stars as Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Rita Ora or Kim Kardashian, to heads of states’, wives as HRH Rania of Jordan, all relied upon him at most important moment of their careers. In May 2013, it’s in the Etihad Towers of Abu Dhabi that Stéphane Rolland opened his first boutique of high-end Prêt-à-Porter, fine leather goods, shoes. His first perfume was launched the following year.

The Fédération Française de la Couture and the Ministère de l’Economie, de l’Industrie et de l’Emploi admitted Stéphane Rolland in the very small circle of the twelve Houses of « Haute Couture ». On the 6th of July 2009, Stéphane Rolland introduced his first luxurious leather goods during his show at Palais de la Découverte.

Pierre GUILLAUME Independent Perfumer - PARIS Born in Clermont, Pierre Guillaume was a young 25-yearold chemist when he composed his first fragrance, COZÉ 02. This “Spicy Tobacco” accord, inspired by the contents of a precious cigar case owned by his father, received critical acclaim from the fragrance blogosphere, which brought it to the attention of professional buyers all around the world. After New York Times perfume critic Chandler Burr praised “the young French chemist who concocted the coolest new European fragrances”, marked the commercial debut of the brand, Pierre Guillaume – Parfumerie Générale. In 2010, the perfumer founded Pierre Guillaume Diffusion and set up a production facility comprising a composition studio, a cellar for raw materials and a packaging line solely dedicated to manufacturing the fragrances conceived by Pierre Guillaume. A second facility was inaugurated in 2015 to handle the company’s logistics after Pierre Guillaume bought out another brand, Phaedon, in 2012. Pierre Guillaume enjoys complete artistic and financial freedom to chis perfumes in his own studios for his two brands, Pierre Guillaume – Parfumerie Générale and Phaedon Paris, distributed through a network of nearly 250 international points of sale.
