MAD Architects
Chaoyang Park Plaza i-mad.com
MAD Architects are known for their futuristic designs, and Chaoyang Park Plaza is no exception to this rule. Located on the edge of the largest remaining park in Beijing’s central business district area, Chaoyang Park Plaza is a contemporary take on the Chinese garden architecture. With a space of 22,3009 m2 area and a location in the heart of Beijing’s major business area, this plaza is very similar to the world-famous Central Park in NYC. Unlike central park though, the buildings that surround this plaza are very contemporary and seem to blend with the plaza in a magical way. “In modern cities, architecture as an artificial creation is seen more as a symbol of capital, power or technological development; while nature exists independently. It is different from traditional Eastern cities where architecture and nature are designed as a whole, creating an atmosphere that serves to fulfil one’s spiritual pursuits,” said architect Ma Yansong from MAD Architects. In order to realize this vision of having nature and cities co-existing in harmony, the buildings that surround this plaza resemble mountains and don’t stand out as odd, thanks to their organic forms. Despite having seemingly random locations -which contributes to the overall “organic” feeling, the buildings surrounding this plaza are placed in strategic locations. The spaces between these buildings also have plenty of trees to maintain the connection with nature effect. The integration with nature that this project tries to accomplish is achieved at a much deeper level. There are plenty of technologies and innovative green concepts that are an essential part of the design that makes this project truly environmentally friendly. This has earned the project the LEED Gold Certification by the US Green Building Council. As nature and modern architecture co-exist successfully in this project, we can only hope to see this approach used in even more public spaces in China and all over the world. - Sam Walsh -

Vismara Design Stadium
vismara.it Vismara has been around since 1953 when three brothers, an inlayer, a cabinetmaker and a wood carver put their heads together in order to make their dream come true, creating Vismara in northern Italy. At first, Vismara was a classical furniture producing company, only to turn, in the course of years, into an international brand thanks to their stylish offer. In the 1990s, Vismara started thinking ahead of its own time, and began creating furniture collections mostly dedicated to TV furniture, entertainment and equipped walls. The 2000s brought baroque and classical furniture with modern details from Vismara, putting them in the spotlight in the field of design. Game rooms and home theaters have been one of the focal points of Vismara, resulting in authentic designs, a great deal of attention to detail, combination of both classical and modern details, and most importantly, authenticity. When it comes to entertainment, the original idea and style of Vismara can be seen in their home theater seats, which are comfortable and stylish at the same time, motorized chess tables, billiards, tables for poker, roulette, etc. One of the latest Vismara products is their foosball table called Stadium, admired not only for its original and modern design, but also for all the details Vismara put in it. Seeing as foosball tables are common objects we mostly see at pubs, Vismara did an outstanding job by making Staduim a piece of furniture impossible to not notice. Apart from the aesthetics surrounding the table and the carefully planned details (the players are gold and chrome – plated, and the balls are made of cork), the fact that it is fully functional cannot go unnoticed, and that its practicality hasn’t been compromised at all, on the contrary. Thanks to certain technical features, the functionality has been improved. - Chloe Grey -

RGB arquitectos
House in Altea Hills rgbarquitectos.com
Spanish architecture firm RGB Arquitectos’ latest work is a house that’s designed to frame the beauty of nature. As the house is located in an area with amazing natural scenes, RGB Arquitectos wanted to make the most out of it. According to the design firm, the main concept behind the design of this house was to “capture” nature. This is achieved through two main things. The first is the continuity between the house and the landscapes. The floor-to-ceiling glass that’s used around this house blurs the line between the house’s interior and its surroundings. The large deck of the house combined with its smooth and fluid lines also contributes to this effect. Together, they give the impression that the house is reaching out to the surrounding nature. When looking at the layout of the house, you’ll notice that it’s oriented to make the most out of the nearby sea view. In addition to that, the mass of the house is laid out in a way that gives all rooms an unobstructed view of the sea. Wherever you are in this house, you’ll be able to enjoy a majestic scene. The pool that’s located in the front deck gives an impression that the sea is much closer, which is a smart thing to do and makes the view from inside the house much more beautiful. On the inside, the house has a minimalist design that gives it an overall serene mood. Such a clean aesthetic choice for the interior allows the inhabitants to enjoy the beauty of nature without it being a distraction. The strong theme of continuity is also present in the house’s interior. By coupling a unified floor material with an open plan, RGB Arquitectos succeeded at creating a space that is in harmony with itself as with its surroundings. Considering the fact that nature is the key element for choosing this location, the architects succeeded in designing a house that makes the most out of its location. - Carolina Bruni -

Babu Chair
toru.barcelona TORU is a young, Barcelona-based company focusing on craft and design. They produce visually attractive, yet simply designed furniture from exclusively finest materials. Their mission is for the products to tell stories, by seeking new ways of using them, while getting the best out of the materials they use. Everything they make is handmade by the local craftspeople, and each product is either made in small series, or is completely unique. For its products TORU uses locally produced leather of the highest quality, and since 2015 when it was founded by Jordi Ribaudi, it has seen satisfied clients and displayed an astonishing offer. The story began back in 2005 when Ribaudi restored an old tanning factory, setting his studio in it. The idea evolved over the years, only to become TORU in 2015. One of their products, Babu chair precisely reflects the philosophy behind the company. The chair itself is designed minimalistically, with absolutely no details to it. It was made of one sheet of leather, that is folded over itself, thus forming the back of the chair. On the bottom of it, there are small legs, made of brass, fixed in order to hold the chair upright. Apart from the physical appearance, Babu is, as they say in TORU, a chair for meditation and relaxation and the design was inspired by tribes traveling across deserts. Another purpose of the chair is to make a connection with people and our planet. The simplicity and the fact that by sitting on it one almost feels like sitting on the floor bring to mind Japanese-style chairs and aesthetics, also well-known and praised for minimalism. - Jovana Todorović -

AOE
Chongqing Sunac One Central Mansion aoe-china.com
The Chinese design firm AOE has recently designed a sales pavilion with a difficult design challenge, which is having the pavilion turned into a kindergarten after its purpose as a sales pavilion is no longer needed. Considering the fact that the function of both buildings is completely different, this was a very challenging thing to do. This pavilion was built for one of China’s largest developers, SUNAC, which was using it as a sales office for their luxury apartment project, which is located on Huxie road. As a result, the design of the pavilion needed to reflect the luxury and modernity of the apartments that the company was selling. To make the building fulfill its role as a sales pavilion and a kindergarten after that, AOE came up with an ingenious solution. They added a removable skin that would give the building the sense of modernity and luxury that would fit such a high-end sales office. After the office is no longer used, the skin can be removed and the entire building turned into a kindergarten as planned. In addition to helping the building fulfill its dual function, the skin pays tribute to the traditional Chinese architecture. Instead of using the geometric forms that were always a key element in western architecture, the architects used a structural system with fluid shapes that are similar to those used in traditional Chinese architecture. In addition to this culture reference, this innovative skin has other functions. As it protects the pavilion from direct sunlight, it helps lower its energy consumption and thus, its overall operational costs. When seen from the outside, the skin gives the building this magical, blurry effect. From the inside, seeing the surroundings through the primary glass skin and the secondary mesh skin create a delightful view of the pavilion’s surroundings. When the need for the pavilion is no more, modifying the interior will be really easy. As the large open spaces don’t have many permanent walls, the transformation should be a simple task. - Michelle Oven -

Tom Rhodes
cityscapeglobal.com It’s nothing short of an honor to have a chance to talk to Tom Rhodes, the Exhibition Director of Cityscape Global, the largest exhibition and conference regarding property development in the region. Various individuals and companies are attending the event every year in order to showcase their projects and create new business opportunities. In which way Cityscape must be approached by companies to maximise its potential? Cityscape Global provides a unique opportunity for property developers to showcase their latest projects at the largest real estate investment show in the region. Many local and regional organisations also use the event as a platform to launch new developments. Cityscape has always been a strong marketing tool to increase the brand awareness of new projects in the market, however following the introduction of onsite sales in 2017 there is a strong ROI for all exhibitors looking to interact with the wealth of investors and homebuyers attending the show. At the core of the exhibition we welcome a large clientele of international architects, designers, consultants and financiers networking and creating business opportunities with industry peers. Over our 17 year history we have become well established as the leading real estate platform in the market and look forward welcoming all participants to the 2018 edition. What role Chinese companies are playing in construction industry in the Middle East? Over the past decade, the Dubai Land Department has been integral in empowering the relationship between the UAE and China. Through this relationship, both countries have worked together to attract Chinese investors to the Emirates. It’s been encouraging to see a number of Chinese developers entering the market with public-private partnerships, and we hope to see more incubation companies use their infrastructure and connections with the government to support the growth of China’s presence in Dubai. What will be the next significate milestone for Cityscape? As we head into Expo2020, we expect to see a number of big announcements for new and exciting projects for the master development. The mega-event will certainly catalyse much of the real estate industry as Dubai prepares for an influx of 20 million visitors throughout the year. Cityscape Global is a balanced mix of real estate services, investors and consumers, and we are always focussed on the future our flagship event and the Cityscape brand. As we move forward, we look to welcome a growing international participation at our shows through initiatives such as the Country of Honor which will see Egypt highlighted as a key investment hub, supported by the Ministry of Housing, and over 18 leading developers from the country. This is a fantastic platform allowing Egypt to take centre stage in front of thousands of international investors who may not have had the opportunity to learn about the great work that is currently taking place there.

Noah Architects Panels Design
noaharchitects.com NOAH consists of a group of professionals in the fields of interior and product design, and architecture, accompanied by inventors and researchers. The team is currently busy with projects around the Middle East. Focusing mainly on excelling in the area of design and sustainability, NOAH also tries to find suitable solutions for the current problems around the world, one of them being people looking for shelters. With a team whose mission is to make life better for people, NOAH is involved in a number of projects, and one of the most notable ones is definitely their panels. In NOAH they firmly believe that nature has given us everything we need to build our lives around it, it has given us all the materials and elements we might desire, so all we, as people, need to do, is add some expertise and modern technological tools, put them together with the gifts we already have, and voila, there’s the elegant design. They have created a series of unique panels, showing us what creativity, nature and knowledge can do together. The wooden panels they create reflect a variety of surfaces we may see, but don’t necessarily pay attention to, in our everyday lives. The panels are carved organically, resembling waves, road surfaces, deserts, and tree rings. Other materials used for creating panels at NOAH are marble and gypsum, where they went for the look of tree rings, creating floating and soft-looking surfaces on rigid materials. Marble usually reminds people of cold and hard surfaces, but the panels of white marble made by NOAH resemble either water waves, or a silk cover, seemingly casually thrown on a couch. NOAH doesn’t rely exclusively on the laws of nature, but math as well, applying Voroni diagrams, producing panels resembling neural networks. Another interesting application of math is the panel created by using the Fibonacci numbers, something observed in various natural occurrences. NOAH brings nature and its forces and phenomena to people’s homes, through successfully combining them with extensive knowledge and expertise. - Jovana Todorović -

Baldi
baldihomejewels.com Born in an artistically fertile part of Italy, Florence, Tuscany, Baldi is a company which was founded back in 1867, by two families – the Ponziani and the Consani. Hometown to Italian Renaissance, Florence, to this day, prides itself on the artistic wealth which is its heritage, as well as its present. Despite the evolution of art, and many revolutions that happened in the field, Baldi has stayed true to the original Italian style and traditional art of Florence, creating unique pieces of art, untouched by the passing time. Baldi specializes in making custom-made, distinctive pieces for homes, by combining classical beauty and tones of modern life. Some of the most notable pieces from their collection come from their partnership with Steinway & Sons, the world renowned piano producers. Masters, each in their own field, both companies ensure the highest possible quality of the pieces they create, resulting in majestic grand pianos, boasting, among other things, precious stones. In its portfolio, Baldi also has a Classical and Contemporary collection, both reflecting the archetypal Italian style. While Baldi’s Contemporary collection combines hand-crafting and old techniques with the contemporary design, its Classic collection includes candelabras and lamps, tables, chairs, etc. embellished with jasper, amethyst, malachite, among others, taking the beholder back in time. Despite the fact that Baldi’s pieces are timeless, Baldi also has a collection of hand-crafted clocks on the outside, while their interior was made using the latest technology from the greatest tower clock master from Germany. Baldi’s Mini and Monumental Clocks are the epitome of top quality and clear vision, as numerous intricacies and astounding attention to detail are reflected in their design. Setting aside just one product as a signature piece by Baldi would be an arduous task, as it seems that this Florentine company pays equal attention to each and every piece they present to us. - Jovana Todorović -

Zaha Hadid Architects
King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre zaha-hadid.com
Zaha Hadid Architect’s latest masterpiece is located in the burning desert of Riyadh. As Saudi Arabia has been quite busty in the past years with many mega construction projects, seeing such a masterpiece being built here is anything but surprising. King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center -also known as KAPSARC- is a non-profit research center that’s dedicated to improving global social wellbeing by reducing the environmental impact and overall cost of energy. To reflect this vision, the campus had to demonstrate excellence in energy conservation and responding to the environmental conditions. By responding so well to the harsh environmental conditions of the Riyadh area, KAPSARC became Zaha Hadid Architect’s first project to be awarded LEED Platinum by the US Green Building Council. The 70,000m² campus has five main buildings, which are the Knowledge Centre, the Computer Centre, the Conference Centre, the Research Library and the Musalla, which is a place that’s dedicated for prayer. Despite being separate buildings, the entire campus is brought together in a unique honeycomb structure. Aside from having great aesthetic qualities, the unique honeycomb shape of the campus buildings allows them to let in as much natural light as possible while minimizing the thermal load of the buildings. Based on an accurate solar study for the area, the buildings are designed to shade each other during daytime. As the campus opens to the north and west, it allows the prevailing winds in this region to cool down the main courtyard. This cooling technique is also used for the campus buildings. As wind catchers direct the prevailing wind into the buildings, they are cooled down naturally. With so many innovative features, there is no wonder why KAPSARC has been chosen as Saudi Arabia’s smartest building by the Honeywell Smart Buildings award programs. There are many lessons that can be learned from the design of this building to make other buildings in the kingdom more sustainable. - Carolina Bruni -

DSH Atelier Architecture Horse Residences
HORSERESIDENCES.COM Horses require specialized care, both when they are at home, and when they need to be transported. There are standards that need to be fulfilled, and their well-being must be ensured. Like all other living beings, horses, too, need a good environment if they need to stay at one place. DSH Atelier Architecture contributed to horse care thanks to their knowledge and four years of research studies in the fields of technology, engineering and design at some of the most prominent horse stables around the world, such as Al Shaqab horse racing academy, and other prestigious stables in the UK. In addition to this, DSH also won a competition for a terminal complex with an integrated 60 boxes horse stable, check-in and loading dock area, organized by the Liege-Airport in preparation for the Olympics in Rio in 2014. If you’re going to do something, do it right, and this is what DSH has done. They thought about everything and covered every detail from making sure that every residence is unique and customized to the needs of the client, over vet care they provide, the transit check-in in cases when horses need to be transported by planes, treadmills and salt water spa. Apart from making sure that the horses they accommodate are physically comfortable, and this is done by using soft and shock-absorbing materials like caoutchouc and rubber pavers, they also took a lot of care to make sure their guests will feel calm and relaxed. In order to accomplish this, they hired a team of veterinarians and a psychologist. The choice of colors was well-thought through, the acoustic of the place is suitable for horses, and finally, they also made sure that all the materials used have no odor that would disturb the animals in any way. With the help of the latest technology and engineering solutions, in addition to their deep know-how in this niche, DSH can offer horse installations which are the most advanced on the market, to guarantee the best health and safety for your horses. - Chloe Grey -

Massimiliano Pelletti Sculptures
massimilianopelletti.com “Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack, a crack, in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” Leonard Cohen Perfection, as such, doesn’t exist in real life, no matter how much our lives in this day and age may seem so. We are surrounded with convenience no matter what we do, and no matter where we go, and it’s all perfect. Trains arriving on time and traveling at unimaginable speed, the internet, giving us answers to any question we can think of, smartphones making everyone available at any given time, there’s no one who cannot be reached. Whether such living conditions are good or bad, is a question always open to debate, but something that is eternally true is the fact that there is beauty in brokenness. Sculptures by Massimiliano Pelletti are broken, imperfect, yet stunning. Resembling classical sculptures, they are the entrance to his world of imagination and inspiration. He says that he finds inspiration in classical sculptures, archeology he’s interested in, and also in using some materials that haven’t been used for sculpting before, such as quartz geode, white and caramel onyx, green malachite, and blue sodalite, with other materials such as bronze, marble and stone. Thanks to other materials unusual for sculpting, such as marine fossils, onyx and red coral, he gives the sculptures little details, here and there, such as piercing blue eyes on one sculpture. Despite these details, his works still take us back to the ancient times, as the classic aesthetic is wrapped around them, sending a very clear message to the beholder, something that modern art, more often than not, fails to do. When you see Pelletti’s art, you don’t have the urge to think or say that the statues should be glued back together, because it’s the missing edges and pieces that make them whole and unique, it’s the combination of people’s desire for perfection and the sculptures’ imperfections that makes Pelletti’s works stunningly beautiful. - Jovana Todorović -

Daniel Mühlbauer Picanova.org
Cologne based company Picanova is listed as one of the world’s market leaders for individual wall decoration with focus on photo canvases in the “Encyclopedia of German world market leaders”. Founded in 2006, it is now one of the fastest growing mass customization companies in e-commerce and meets people’s growing need for individually designed products. Picanova manufactures millions of wall and decorative items, photo gifts and lifestyle accessories, and tailor them to each individual customer. In 2017 Picanova entered the Asian market and is now heading to the Middle East. Read the full interview with Picanova’s founder and CEO Daniel Mühlbauer. How do you approach the two different markets, China and the Middle East? China and the Middle East couldn’t be more different and have their own characteristics. Chinese are high-tech oriented and known for their well-developed e-commerce systems while the Middle Eastern people are more interested in construction and high-end luxury. However, what both markets have in common – a liking for high-quality and customizable lifestyle products. We manufacture most products in our own production facilities in Germany, so our customers can rely on the high-quality standards of “Made in Germany”. China and the Middle East are both attractive markets as many influencers, graphic designers, and photographers are looking for higher quality, exciting and trendy products and can monetize their contents with our services. Which problems do you help companies to solve by offering your services? We offer several B2B-services specially designed for companies and their needs. A few examples are the API (application programming interface) designed for companies wishing to offer individual photo products and gifts to their customers – seamlessly integrated into the existing shop system. Our 3D-scanner can be rented for events, increase reach, make marketing more emotional and enhance the entrepreneur’s products and services. Shortly, we will launch the Corporate Designer which will make wall decoration for companies, hotels and architect studios easier and more stringent. Companies can pre-select a set of motifs which then can be ordered by each employee for his or her individual office space or by hoteliers for the furnishing of each hotel room. As we produce in-house we can guarantee high quality and fast deliveries. We are also open to individual business solutions and new ideas. Where do you see a room of improvement in your company? Our day-to-day challenge is to give the best to our customers – every single day! We are very ambitious and would like to further expand our product portfolio, offering a high quality at affordable prices. Our goal is to launch one new product per month starting next winter. In the near future, there will be several new systems and technologies that will improve the e-shop experience. Which impact do you think they might have in the society? Personalization and dynamic prizing are must-haves for any online pure player, already now and more so in the near future. Depending on the individual surf behavior and past purchases, each online shopper will see a personalized landing page and be offered the products he is looking for or might be interested in. This makes the e-shopping experience even more relevant and personal for each customer.

Turri
The Yacht turri.it
Sailing has been some people’s passion for a long time, and although sailing started as a necessity, so that people could catch fish, and later transport goods from one place to another, it now is a lifestyle for some and hobby for others. The field of interior design has been evolving, and things go in and out of style in a blink of an eye. Design of homes located on the ground has seen many different styles come and go, and it’s no different for yachts. The superyacht we will present is 70 mt, and was made by one of the best and most famous Italian shipyards. Its interior was entirely designed by Turri. The company was founded way back in 1925 and in less than fifty years, they have become the leader in the field of interior furnishing. They embrace various concepts, combining the classical and the modern. As they said for themselves, everything they do can be covered with just three words: original, authentic and unique. The interior of the superyacht is the witness. No matter how good one is at interior design, one must keep in mind that the space is limited, even when we talk about houses and apartments, let alone yachts. And just a glance at the interior of this yacht tells us that Turri know what they’re doing, as the space hasn’t been compromised, and neither has comfort. The interior of the yacht is gorgeous, prevalent colors are all shades of white, making it look even more spacious than it really is. The gentle tones soothe and the shape of the furniture is round and organic, with few lines and angles. The entire space is full of light, and the shades of white inside melt together with the blue that is outside. The life on this beauty can be fully functional, as there is literally everything, including a dining table for ten. - Sam Walsh -

Peter Donders Shelly Bronze
peterdonders.com In this day and age, when technology develops in such a rapid way, everything becomes old news quite quickly. However, 3D printing is finding its way and applications in more and more areas of our lives, and creative people, such as Peter Donders surprise us with new pieces they have come up with. Peter Donders (born in 1965) is a Belgium-based artist who started his career as a furniture designer. Later on, he started using computer-based tools along with his craftsmanship and started producing remarkable works of art, art which won’t become old news any time soon. According to Donders, it was his father who inspired him to start learning about furniture design, and it took him about fifteen years to start using computers for his works. He specializes in the 3D design, modeling, prototyping, etc. and this is exactly where his piece of art, Shelly Bronze comes from. Shelly Bronze is a chair, made from one surface from a 3D print, and is in many ways special. Shelly connects two worlds, the old ways and the modern times. And when you first look at the chair, you can’t really decide whether it belongs to the past, or to a modern art gallery. Shelly Bronze is yet another Donders’ unique masterpiece, and its price is €45.999. This is one of the prime examples how, a true artist, such as Peter Donders, knows how to combine a traditional furniture design and 3D printing, to make one object which reflects two entirely different eras. Even though it is modern-looking, Shelly Bronze’s shape and details are organic, filled with fluidity, simply inviting you to have it. As it is finished with transparent lacquer, the glow gives the whole story a bit of a magical touch as well. Its wavy form resembles water and is somewhat Dalí-esque which just adds to the feeling of fluidity and floating. - Mikael Fernstrom -

Sunyata Hotel in Dali Old Town zhaoyangarchitects.com
Chinese architecture firm Zhaoyang Architects latest work is a hotel in Dali’s Old Town, China. When designing this hotel, the team was faced with the challenge of not having any nearby views. As the hotel’s land plot is surrounded by residential buildings from three sides, Zhaoyang Architects had to contain this hotel in its own world. To do that, they designed the hotel around a beautiful courtyard to create a view for the hotel’s guests. The clustered masses of the hotel’s building also create narrow streets that resemble those of an old village, which results in an amazing experience for the visitors. To make the hotel fit its surroundings and give it a more traditional look, the walls are clad with local stop masonry. In addition to the stone cladding, the hotel has pitched roofs that are covered with traditional tiles. As the local code for the area requires drainage gutters to drain the water in the rainy seasons, Zhaoyang Architects have added copper gutters to the facade. Aside from serving their function of draining rainwater, they give the facade some colored highlights and a vintage look. Inside the courtyard, plants and wooden elements work together to create a unique mood. The wooden doors and window frames create a visually-interesting contrast with the stone material that is used for the walls. To achieve a sense of continuity between the courtyard and the surrounding spaces, the walls of these spaces are made of glass panels. In addition to making the sitting areas feel like a part of the courtyard, these glass panels create a sense of “Yin and Yang” contrast with the stone walls. As a result of the project’s complex conditions, the spaces have a sense of irregularity. Considering the fact that this is a project that resembles a tiny village, this is a good thing as it makes the spaces more interesting to walk through and explore. - Michelle Oven -

Utopia & Utility utopiaandutility.eu
Utopia & Utility is a European company that makes vessels that show exceptional craftsmanship. The unique blend of elements and the skill level that’s required to combine them in a single item are two things that make the products of this company truly stand out. Since it was founded by siblings Pia and Moritz Wüstenberg in 2012, Utopia & Utility has been on a mission to enrich life by creating beautiful objects. Having graduated with a degree in product design from the Royal College of Arts back in 2011, Pia’s background makes her the creative director and designer at Utopia & Utility. Combining her vision with the skills of master craftsmen results in products that are like nothing else. As they mix glass, wood, metal, and pottery, these vessels are nothing short of wonderful. By stacking different parts that are made of different materials together, these masterpieces are created. Seeing a single vessel that’s made from glass, wood, and pottery altogether in such a seamless way is both inspiring and impressive. Aside from having excellent aesthetic qualities, these vessels require completely different disciplines to work together. Since everything in these vessels is handmade, it takes true masters of their crafts to produce a final product with such quality. Having three parts that were made separately fit together this way requires a high level of coordination between different craftsmen. If the work isn’t coordinated very accurately, the pieces won’t end up fitting together as they should. That’s why creating a vessel that combines different materials is a much more challenging task. With their latest Raku line, Utopia & Utility have added ceramics to the range of materials that they work with. When you see such products, you can only wonder what other spectacular products would result from having different professions collaborating together. - Sam Walsh -

Fernanda Marques Arquitetos Associados Panorama
fernandamarques.com.br Every person in the world wants to have their living space decorated the way they want, and the modern day architecture has been bringing us various interior design styles, some of which we have seen before and some that are completely new, stunning, shocking or breathtaking. Having a swimming pool in one’s house really is old news, but having a swimming pool in one’s apartment is something we haven’t seen before. In São Paulo there is one apartment with a swimming pool located conveniently in the living room. The owner of the apartment is an avid art collector, and he had two desires when he wanted to redecorate his apartment: he wanted a place where he could display his growing collection of art and he also wanted a swimming pool. Not many architects could find a perfect solution to unite both wishes, but Fernanda Marques came up with a great one, positioning the pool right in their living room. As the owner loves art, Marques was tasked with another tricky problem – how to incorporate the furniture so that the accent isn’t on it, but on the art collection itself. Apart from the fact that one can’t notice the pool, what one sees first are a tremendous amount of light and no dark colors. Also, there’s nothing artificial at the place, as prevailing colors are the colors of nature, light brown, light gray, blue, green, etc. The overall aesthetic of the apartment stuns, as there is a lot of serenity to it, and you can immediately see yourself, not necessarily swimming in the living room, but maybe just having a cup of tea on the comfy sofa, while being surrounded by clean, neutral tones of the furniture made by famous Brazilian designers, which are present, but allow the impressive collection of artworks to be the star of the space. - Kate Dolby -

interview
Alberto Apostoli albertoapostoli.com
Design42Day had the opportunity to interview Alberto Apostoli, one of the world’s most prominent spa designers. It would, however, be unfair to tie Apostoli only to this segment, as he is a notable person in various fields (integrated planning services and project management, engineering, education, etc.), and someone who has been internationally recognized and known for redefining architecture toward objectives which are more holistic. What are the 3 main characteristics that a well-designed spa must have? A well-designed spa is the one that, first of all, excites its guests. Secondly, it has be “honest”, in the sense that it should confirm the quality promised during the project phase. Third and most important: it must be technically perfect. Too often I see SPAs equipped with not well calibrated systems (mechanical, electrical and plumbing). This seriously damages the success of the overall project. What is a material that you can hardly avoid in your projects? In my projects I like “to play” with materials and, when possible, I try to experiment with new ones. But when it comes to spa, my choice always falls on materials for excellence, those closest to nature: stone, wood and glass. What is the main difference between a luxury interior project and a ``pretentious`` luxury project that try, but fails, even if the budget invested is high? Somebody said “details are not detail”. No doubt that precious materials such as marble and mosaic or rich products like Murano chandeliers or designer furniture, make any interior design a luxurious one. But what makes the difference and makes a truly luxurious space is the obsessive search for detail; all those small particulars that, together, allow our space to be special and unique. Your studio has offered in past years many services, is there any other services in future that you would like to offer? My studio has always offered integrated architectural, MEP and interior design services. In the SPA sector, we were among the first to provide such designs in BIM mode. A part from this, for some years I have been working on a very special and ambitious project. I would like to offer my clients a “Management Manual” based on my design for that specific SPA. For every spa I design, I would like to give the owner a tool that allows him to manage the spa in perfect agreement with my Concept Design. This should guarantee the perfect functioning of the spa its financial success.

Bigert & Bergström Solar Egg
bigertbergstrom.com Solar Egg by Bigert & Bergström for Riksbyggen is an artistic installation inspired by a diverse environment of Kiruna. As the name suggests, the shape of the sauna is oval, which grants its users a unique experience. The climate in Kiruna is Arctic, meaning that there are long periods of darkness, followed by long periods of daylight, which also inspired the artists. As Kiruna is undergoing an urban transformation, the egg itself symbolizes not only rebirth, but also new opportunities. The urban transformation will include moving city districts, as the ground of the place started subsiding, because of the long history of iron ore mining. When you look at Solar Egg, you can see that it is made of gold-plated stainless steel, and it may resemble what one can see through a kaleidoscope, as it reflects its surroundings. It is like looking at a mirror and seeing different segments, angles, shapes and colors all around you, you see the reflections of the city, as well as the nature of Kiruna. One of the aims of Solar Egg by Bigert & Bergström is to also be a conversation starter. And while the outside of the installation most certainly attracts people to share an opinion or two, the simplicity of the interior, with no intricacies, but with the nice aesthetics, the natural color of wood which is the predominant material, offers peacefulness and gives the visitors an opportunity to focus on the conversations they’re having, or their own thoughts, without any distractions. Solar Egg is a shelter, not only from the cold, but from everything everyday life brings upon us, it’s like an island one can escape to in order to gain some perspective, meditate or simply enjoy good company. -Kate Dolby -

Red Dot
red-dot.org Red Dot Award: Product Design – appraising the best in design Design is all around us. However, the variety of offered products makes it difficult to recognise their quality. The Red Dot Award has made it its task to identify good design and to award it with the Red Dot. Every year, the Red Dot Award: Product Design, whose origins date back to 1955, appraises the best products created every year and thus provides guidance for consumers. Products from all areas of daily life From everyday to unusual – each year, participants can choose between more than 45 product categories for their submission. They can send in objects from all areas of daily life from consumer electronics to aircraft, medical devices, jewellery, robotics and furniture for evaluation by an international jury. “The first thing I notice is the huge variety of categories and the growing quality of products,” said Red Dot jury member and UK design strategist Michael Thomson during the adjudication process in 2018. Experience and expertise get straight to the point For more than 60 years, a jury consisting of experienced experts from different specialist fields have been coming together to search out the best designs of the year. There is one special aspect to the judging process: each product is submitted as a functioning original, and the experts can handle it and try it out. This is an important basis for the evaluation as photos and presentation boards alone do not provide certainty of a product’s design quality. The functionality as well as the touch and feel of an object, which encompasses factors such as the materiality, the finish and the surface structure, play an equally important role as the aesthetics do. So, in line with the motto “In search of good design and innovation”, the jury looks for criteria such as the level of innovation, functionality, formal quality, durability and ergonomics. They provide an orientation framework, which is complemented by each individual juror according to his or her expertise and socio-cultural background. Red Dot Winner Label identifies award-winning products If a design receives an award, the winners may use the internationally recognized winner label. It assures the long-term association of the product with outstanding design quality and offers consumers a useful benchmark. Award-winning entries are furthermore presented in the Red Dot Design Yearbook, in international exhibitions, as well as online and in the Red Dot Design App. - Article by Red Dot -

The System Lab Kosmos
thesystemlab.com Chanjoong Kim, an acclaimed architect from South Korea, created KOSMOS on an island near Songgotsan Mountain. KOSMOS, derived from the ancient Greek, meaning cosmos, is a place unique not only in that country but in the world as well. The idea behind the project was to allow people to be in harmony with nature, something we don’t see often these days. The unusual shape of KOSMOS was created considering the paths of the Sun and the Moon, and an astronomical weather station computer, which only further witnesses Kim’s desire to be in sync with nature surrounding us. Another way in which Kim managed to put together the nature surrounding the site and the building itself, as two seemingly opposed things, was using cutting-edge technology in a place almost untouched by humans, bringing the contrasts together and uniting them in his own story. Basically, the entire project reflects the philosophy behind Yin and Yang: black and white, dark and light, nature and modern life, all the opposites. And no matter how different they are, the fact is that they simply cannot exist one without the other. While humanity believes in the misconception that people are stronger than nature, if we just stopped and thought for a second, we’d see that we are one with nature, which was the idea behind this majestic project. The basic principle of the universe is harmony, and this is the experience Kim wanted to offer to the visitors of KOSMOS. Just by looking at the pictures, you can see that it is a really unusual place to spend time at, a place that will give you a chance to reconnect, not only with nature but also with yourself. It is a perfect place to reflect on one’s life, their past and future, and most definitely, a place like no other. Photo credits: Yongkwan Kim - Sam Walsh -
