Editor’s View Dear Readers, Health and fitness expert Richard Simmons once said in an interview, “You can’t buy it, you can’t rent it. You have to earn it. My formula has always been love yourself, move your body, watch your portions.” It says it all. A healthy life is not a commodity that anybody can buy. You have to work at it. Though the definition of a healthy lifestyle may differ from person to person. For one person, it is to live a disease-free life, while for another, it is to be able to play with grandchildren. Living a healthy lifestyle is one of the most important elements in achieving your optimal physical as well as mental well-being. The April issue includes the latest in health and wellness. Two important parts that contribute towards a healthy lifestyle include food and exercise. In 431 B.C, the father of medicine Hippocrates said “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” It was true then and of course it is true today. The healing properties of food have been documented by cultures worldwide throughout history and especially in Ayurveda coming from Ancient India. Many fruits, vegetables, Indian spices like turmeric and unprocessed foods have ingredients that can benefit our health and offer benefits such as cancer prevention, cholesterol reduction, and hormone regulation and many more. Our editorial staff put together recipes in “A New and Balanced You: Recipes for a Healthy Lifestyle.” Be sure you cut them out and stick them on your refrigerator! Now onto the second important aspect of a healthy lifestyle - exercise. We are proud to introduce a new contributor, Chahna Tailor, a young dynamic woman and yoga instructor. Check out her article, “Yoga: Healthy Mind, Body, and Spirit.” On a sad note, we join millions of fans of Bollywood legendary actress Sri Devi by remembering her in “A Tribute to Sri Devi”. Veteran Bollywood actor and Padma Shri awardee, Sridevi, who had an illustrious career spanning over four decades, passed away at a very early age of 54. On a brighter note, we share with readers the beautiful pictures of another record breaking attendance at the Atlanta MyShadi Bridal Expo. On behalf of the Desh Videsh Media Group team, I would like to thank all the participating vendors, fashion show sponsor Puneet Kaur from Celestial Pehnawa, makeup artist Manisha of Forever Beauty, choreographer Shubhra Singh, Nirali and Pradip Patel for the beautiful stage décor, and last but not least, all the attendees. Let me end, by inviting you all to join us at our next MyShadi Bridal Expo in Orlando on April 15, 2018. As you all know, Orlando is our flagship show where a record number of attendees not only from Orlando, but from neighboring cities like Tampa, Jacksonville, Melbourne, Gainesville, Dayton Beach, South Florida, and Tallahassee join us. With over 150 booths with a variety of vendors, we are almost sold out and it is going to be another spectacular show. See you on April 15 in Orlando! Raj Shah Managing Editor

Healthy Mind, Body, and Spirit By Chahna Tailor, Yoga Instructor

or thousands of years, utilizing purifying practices such as asanas (physical poses), pranayama (control of the life force energy), and dhyana (meditation) were nothing out of the ordinary in India. It was common knowledge that these practices were beneficial for mental, physical, and spiritual health. However, in today’s day and age, these ancient teachings are being pushed to the side due to the misconception that these practices are not applicable to our daily lives. In reality, it is quite fascinating how far that is from the truth. Even though the main reason for sitting down was different for a yogi, a yoga practice actually mirrors our life. A yogi spent many hours sitting in meditation without changing the position of his body. If you reflect on how many of us spend the hours of our day, you will realize that you tend to spend much of the time sitting down. PRNEWSWIRE.com reports that “Americans are sitting an average of 13 hours a day and sleeping an average of 8 hours resulting in a sedentary lifestyle of around 21 hours a day.” Put that together with what Oli Scarff of NBC News reports, “sitting is the new smoking — it raises the risk of disability, diabetes, heart disease and cancer, not to mention obesity.”

When we devote an extended period of time in the same sitting position, a variety of things happen. Muscles in the legs start to lose their strength, the blood does not circulate efficiently, and we put a lot of weight on our hips and pelvis. Unless we are consistent with employing proper body mechanics, we also tend to hunch causing additional strain on the neck, shoulders, and back as well as limit our ability to take in sufficient oxygen. Moreover, the stress from trying to maintain a healthy work/family/recreational life balance can also impact our body systems in different ways. It can start with something as minuscule as indigestion or a headache. At first, we ignore it - thinking it’s just a routine and insignificant dip in our immune system that will go away in a few days. Sometimes, we attribute it to the aging process and accept is as part of life. In reality, this is just the beginning of energy blockages. Without giving these energy blockages the proper attention and treatment they deserve, these minor functional defects can become chronic, resulting in malfunc18

tion or failure of a bone, limb, organ, or an entire system within the body. For these reasons, we can actually utilize yogic practices as preventative measures or as a way of coping with existing stresses by releasing energy blockages. Yoga asana poses lessen tension in the body, pranayama breathing exercises stabilize the nervous system, and practice of dhyana (meditation), helps one live in the present moment, develop mindfulness and cultivate stillness. It may be hard to believe, but there is an asana that will address issues with the circulatory, digestive, excretory, endocrine, lymphatic (immune), nervous, and/or muscular system just by performing it! Even though the goal was to sit in meditation for long periods in order to achieve self-realization, asanas were used as a way to increase the body’s tolerance to sitting motionless without having any physical or mental distractions. Even today, if we are sitting at a desk working for long hours, we are much more effective if we have no aches, pains, or mental distractions.

Each pranayama technique can provide a different benefit. Certain practices are used to quiet the mind and decrease anxiety and stress, some can heat up or cool down the body’s temperature, whereas others are specifically used to increase the flow of oxygen in the body and purify the energy channels. A true yogi is not marked by his/her ability to perform a split or a handstand, but by the ability to maintain a constant breath throughout their life practice. Asana and pranayama are important to instilling a meditation, or one-pointed concentration, practice. They are considered the stepping stones. In some aspects, when you take a yoga class today, the cultural and spiritual aspects have been eradicated. Yoga is a way to heal yourself, so it cannot be compared to exercise. It is medicinal and encompasses a comprehensive way of life. Today, yoga is marketable, trendy, and the majority of the yoga classes and even yoga teacher trainings are not in line with real yogic teaching; they can be diluted and commercialized. In the West, yoga teacher trainings mainly focus on the asanas – but, that is only one of the eight limbs of yoga! The other seven limbs are equally important. When I received my

yoga teacher training in the yoga capital of the world, Rishikesh, India, there was a holistic focus on all eight limbs of yoga as well as yoga philosophy, Ayurveda (which included cooking!), mudras, bandhas, and even the science of breath. They understand how every subject is connected and that each aspect has a specific purpose. The yoga teachers made sure they were teaching yoga classes, not asana classes. When attending a yoga class or even practicing yoga on your own, it is important that you are receiving more than just physical benefits from your practice. Yoga is not an exercise regime, even though that is what has been instilled in the minds of the masses. If you think health is just physical, you’re missing the picture. We should keep the mind andspirit healthy as well! In this busy world that we live in, we spend the majority of our time connecting/interacting with others, whether it is face to face or through technology. But, how often do we take time to connect with ourselves? By creating an awareness on our body, breath, and thoughts, we can achieve physical, mental, and spiritual bliss, or samadhi.

he “Tell the Whole Story from Beginning to End” The Ramayana in Indian Painting exhibition launched on January 13, 2018 at the Michael C. Carlos Museum of Emory University (Carlos Museum) and will continue until May 20, 2018. Claimed to be the first-of-its kind, the exhibition was curated, organized and researched exclusively by Emory students in the class The Art of an Hindu Epic, taught by professors Ellen Gough and Marko Geslani from Emory’s Department of Religion.

14 years, accompanied by his devoted wife and brother, Sita and Lakshmana. After Sita is abducted by Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, Rama wages war to ensure her rescue, aided by his faithful friend Hanuman and armies of monkey and bears.

It tells a sweeping and heroic tale of the exiled Prince Rama, who struggles to rescue his wife, kidnapped by a demon, and his triumphant victory. Beyond a mere story, it presents Hindu teachings that continue to influence life and culture.

The Ramayana is the most celebrated epic poem in India. It tells the journey of prince Rama, from his banishment from the kingdom of Ayodhya, to his triumphant return. Denied the throne on the eve of his coronation, Rama finds himself exiled to the forest for 34

APRIL 2018 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

The earliest version of the Ramayana, attributed to the sage Vālmīki, was composed in almost 24,000 Sanskrit verses over 5000 years back. Rama is the 7th incarnation of Vishnu and the embodiment of righteousness, and the ideals of man are beautifully portrayed in this epic poem. “Tell the whole story, from beginning to end!” exclaims Sita in desperation to the vulture Jatayu as Ravana carries her away from Rama. “Tell Rama and Laksmana just how I was carried off!” The paintings in this exhibition demonstrate some of the diverse, often conflicting, ways in which artists have, for centuries, attempted to heed Sita’s plea. The paintings in this exhibit date between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries and, for the most part, were created by master painters in the courts of the Rajput kingdoms of Northwest India. The paintings in this exhibition are reportedly dated between the 17th and 19th centuries, including “The Coronation of Rama” (1840). Students included Darby Caso, Parth Goyal, Kristin Kimberlain, Saayli Kokitkar, Marshall KupkaMoore, Elizabeth Muse, Thomas Shen, Tarun Swaminathan; most of whom had little background in art history.

Aamir Khan’s MegaBudget Mahabharata Not Yet Official

Jacqueline Fernandez Criticized for Ek Do Teen

When Jacqueline Fernandez swayed to Madhuri Dixit’s iconic number Ek Do Teen from Tezaab, she was criticized on social media. The song was choreographed by Ganesh Acharya, one of the background dancers in the original song. The song was filmed for Baaghi 2 directed by Ahmed Khan. Tezaab director N Chandra called the dance “crass.” Khan explained that when they decided on the number, they were ready for the criticism. He added that the song “is an experiment... All feedback of such work cannot be positive.” While N Chandra has slammed the new version, Saroj Khan, 62

the choreographer of Madhuri’s song, refused to comment. However, Anil Kapoor who costarred with Madhuri in Tezaab as well as Salman Khan showered their praise on Jacqueline Fernandez via Twitter. Madhuri has not yet given her feedback on the new version of Ek Do Teen. Khan said that they bought the rights of the song and did it in a legal manner. “The intention behind recreating any song is to revisit the memory of some of the cult classics like this and keeping the new generation connect with it,” he said. Baaghi 2 is scheduled to release on March 30 and stars Tiger Shroff and Disha Patani.

Aamir Khan is likely to work on a mega-budget movie series based on the Mahabharata. The actor is currently shooting for Thugs of Hindostan, which also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Khan.

In fact a few months ago, Fatima Sana Khan was seen reading The Mahabharata on one of her Instagram posts. However, she removed the post immediately following speculations of her role in the film.

There has been no official announcement of the mega budget film yet and Khan has not spoken about the film. While promoting his film Secret Superstar, the actor said that his dream project is to make the Mahabharata.

Sonam Kapoor, Anand Ahuja Will Reportedly Marry Soon

Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja are reportedly getting married in May in Geneva. The actress and fashionista has never spoken about her personal life. However, if reports are to be believed, the couple is likely to tie the knot in a traditional Hindu wedding in May. Sonam and Anand have reportedly finalized Geneva as their wedding destination, which would be nothing short of a star-studded affair. “The date and venue for the wedding have been locked and mass bookings for flights are presently underway. Her dad Anil Kapoor is personally making phone calls to invite guests,” said a source, speaking to Mumbai Mirror. 64

He added that his favorite character is Karna, but was not sure of playing the character due to his physique. Khan told that he may just settle for Krishna. “I’m afraid of starting the project as I know it will consume at least 15-20 years of my life,” he said.

The source added that Anil Kapoor is reportedly making bulk bookings for the family and guests to fly to the city in Switzerland. The couple will reportedly get engaged before their wedding that will be attended only by close family and friends. Wedding functions will be spread over two days and include sangeet and mehendi. Sonam’s beau Anand makes regular appearances on her Instagram. The Delhi-based businessman owns the multi-brand sneaker boutique Veg Non Veg and is also the CEO and founder of the apparel brand -Bhane. Sonam is known as a fashionista and it is her love for fashion that probably brought Anand and Sonam close.

After Race 3, Salman Khan is impressed with the acting prowess of Bobby Deol and has recommended the latter for Kick 2. He has reportedly asked Sajid Nadiadwala to script a character for Bobby. The actor is known to promote and mentor talent if he sees someone with potential. Since Bobby’s first innings didn’t go well, this time around looks like Salman is giving the former a helping hand. Both Salman and Bobby are currently shooting for Race 3 in Abu Dhabi. Kick 2 is still in the script stage. However, Nadiadwala informed earlier that Kick 2 will hit theatres in Christmas 2019. He had also directed Salman Khan in Kick. Meanwhile, Salman and Bobby will be seen dancing in the latter’s home production -- Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se. The actor has danced with da-sons in the song sequence. Kick is the story of Devi Lal (Salman), who gets a ‘kick’ by doing some odd things in life. He steals from the rich and gives it to the poor children to help them, which gives him immense pleasure.

Salman Khan Drops Poster from Race 3

Salman Khan has dropped the looks of his costars from Race 3. The film has been making news ever since it was announced by the actor. However, this time around the action flick is not being directed by Abbas-Mastan and doesn’t include Saif Ali Khan.

Race 3 is being directed by Remo D’Souza and produced by Ramesh Taurani’s Tips Industries and Salman Khan Films. Apart from Bhaijan, the ensemble cast of the film include Jacqueline Fernandez, Bobby Deol, Daisy Shah, Saqib Saleem and Freddy Daruwala. While Khan plays the role of the suave Sikander, Daruwala plays a negative role as Rana and Fernandez plays Jessica with raw power. Bobby Deol is Khan’s main man, Daisy Shah plays Sanjana, while Saleem is the angry young man. And that’s not all. Anil Kapoor will be playing the role of Shamsher in the action thriller. Shooting for the action sequences has started in Abu Dhabi. Salman Khan took to Twitter and shared Kapoor’s looks with his fans. “Shamsher: Bhaiji Humre boss. #Race3 #Race3ThisEid @AnilKapoor @SKFilmsOfficial @TipsOfficial”, he tweeted. Looks like Shamsher will cause a lot of trouble for the cast of Race 3, going by the poster. He will not reprise his role of Robert D’Costa aka R.D. the detective. The film is slated for Eid 2018 release.

Ronit Roy Feels ‘Good Work in Cinema’ Coming to Him Once he was one of the highest paid actors in the small screen. However, there came a time in his life when he felt he was “dying inside,” and distanced himself from television.

Ronit Roy is returning to television with ALTBalaji’s Kehne Ko Humsafar Hai. The 52-year-old actor is known for his roles such as as Rishabh Bajaj in Kasauti Zindagi Kii and Mihir Virani in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. 68

“You know, there was a time I earned as much money as of a film actor during my days in TV. But I had to stop it somewhere… Because things were not happening that way (in a progressive manner), and I was dying inside,” he said. Ronit has worked in films like Udaan, Boss, Ugly and 2 States, Student of the Year, That Girl In Yellow Boots and Kaabil. He is now shooting for his next film Thugs of Hindostan. Though his role is not big in Aamir Khan’s Thugs of Hindostan, he deems “the experience is great.” He feels “good work in cinema” is coming to him. APRIL 2018 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

Audience Unhappy With Family Time With Kapil Sharma Family Time With Kapil Sharma aired on March 25 and left audiences bored. Though the hype around the show was huge, and Kapil attempted to experiment with something different with the game show format, it hasn’t gone down well with the audience and Twitterati. Stand-up comedy has always been Kapil’s forte; however the show doesn’t have much of that, leaving the comedian’s fans disappointed.

pared it to Khullja Sim Sim, the popular 2001 show. In spite of the debut episode of the show being a damper with the audience, an instance to be noted here is even The Kapil Sharma Show did not open to great reviews. This was just the first episode and there is lots of scope for improvement.

People are unhappy that Sunil Grover and Ali Asgar are not in the new show. Meanwhile, Navjot Singh Sidhu’s shayaris are getting repetitive, besides Kiku Sharda and Chandan Prabhakar’s characters don’t have much of a change. The new addition to the show is Neha Pendse. The first star guest of Family Time With Kapil Sharma was Ajay Devgn who made an appearance on the show to promote his film Raid. The show is a fun game show where members of a family compete with each other in games and fun activities. Twitter users com70
