Edito r’s View Dear Readers, Indian-Americans shine in many spheres other than IT and Spelling Bees, which is our cover story for this issue. I am very happy and proud to report to you that this list is increasing by leaps and bounds. Even though one print issue of Desh-Videsh with 88 pages is not enough to cover all successful Indian Americans around the nation, we have attempted to cover a few in this issue with several articles. At the top of this list is Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee and his wife, also a Nobel laureate, Esther Duflo. It is a proud moment for every Indian when a fellow Indian receives such an honor. And I get even more excited when this Indian goes to the Noble prize ceremony in a typical Indian - Bengali outfit and his wife in a sari. At the same time, I get very frustrated when someone like him goes to India and tells them that he would not have gotten a prize if he had stayed in India. He forgot his fellow Indian and Bengali Tagore and Prof C.V Raman. I do not have credentials to criticize Mr. Banerjee, but I am sure some of you will agree with me that when you are at that level, your job is to encourage the younger generation all over the world and especially the younger generation in the country where you received your primary education. The year 2020 is a presidential election year so there is a lot of talk about politics. And we know that Indian Americans are not going to be left out in this field. Check out our article “Indian Americans: A Rising Political Force in the U.S.” But do not forget to check out the complete list of elected officials in the US on our website. The link is available at the end of the article. I know we talked about succeeding in fields other than IT, but what do you say if somebody is talented in IT and also in the field of Indian classical music. Learn more about Florida’s own Sanjay Chandran, a musician and teacher who is also at the top of the IT field. The February issue of Desh-Videsh would not be complete if we did not cover the January 26 Republic Day celebration in India and announcement of Padma awards. Prof. Jagdish Sheth from Atlanta, Georgia, second home of Desh-Videsh magazine received the Padma Bhushan award, the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India. Philip Kotler, The Father of Modern Marketing, described Dr. Sheth as “…a scholar, change agent, advisor, and entrepreneur, in other words, a Renaissance Man.” Our young and dynamic yoga guru of south Florida and now Ayurveda expert, Chahna Tailor compares Ayurveda and Modern Medicine in her latest article in this issue. Now let me talk about another talented, soft spoken and passionate person - Neha Ganju Tanna. Most of us living in South Florida and almost all Kashmiris living in the US knew her. Unfortunately, she left us at a very early age. But she left her experience, sweet memories and advice for her three year old daughter through her writings. Please read my book review of Body Betrayed Beauty. It is a heartfelt story of a young mom who lost her battle against cancer. As promised in the last issue, going forward we will include financial advice in every issue, so don’t miss the latest article by Supal Vora, “Getting 2020 Vision on Your Finances in The New Year.” As usual let me close my column by reminding readers about our two upcoming bridal shows, one in Raleigh on March 29, and the other in Orlando on April 5. there are ways they can be paid down more quickly or if you could benefit by refinancing any loans.

4. Review your portfolio

1. Review where you stand

Investment markets have performed well for an extended period of time. Are you prepared for increased unpredictability in the markets? Make sure the risk reflected in your portfolio aligns with your risk profile. Consider rebalancing investments if your portfolio allocations have shifted due to varying performance for different assets.

Begin by looking at your broad financial picture. This includes determining your net worth (assets you own minus liabilities or debts you owe). Identify whether you can cut costs in order to put more money to work toward your key financial goals. Also make sure you have a sufficient emergency fund that could cover at least three to six months of income.

2. Reassess your goals Determine if the goals you’ve established, such as education savings or retirement savings, are still appropriate based on your plans for the future. Are you on track to achieve them? Can you find more dollars to put toward them?

3. Consider your debt and credit score If you haven’t checked your credit score lately, it’s a good idea to do so. Look at your current debts (auto loans, mortgages, student loans, etc.) to see if

5. Conduct a checkup of your protection strategy Now is a good time to review your insurance policies to make sure you are properly covered. This includes everything from auto and home insurance to life insurance, disability income coverage and long-term care protection.

6. Solidify your estate plan Pay special attention to your estate planning needs. This is a concern regardless of your age and assets. Review your will to be sure that it is current and

He is among eleven young alumni who received the Penn State Alumni Association’s Alumni Achievement Award in 2006. Chandran is currently the chief executive officer of Go Mobile Health, Inc. He is also currently serving as a member of the Board of Directors at International Hindu University. Mr. Chandran is the inventor or co-inventor of several patented technology, including patents for unique fabrication methods and designs for ultrasonic transducers used in medical imaging. Sanjay regularly conducts violin and Indian classical music classes in Boca Raton, Florida. One of his best students is his daughter Sanjana. In 2017, she received the Award of Excellence from Desh-Videsh Media Group. Sanjay has recently established Florida Fine Arts, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, to promote fine arts such as music and dance in our community and to use fine arts as a medium to appeal to and involve the younger generation on a myriad of important issues.

Raj Shah, Managing Editor, Desh-Videsh

Please tell us about your background. I was born and raised in Mumbai, India. As far as academics go, I received my B.Tech degree from IIT Bombay and M.S. in Engineering from Penn State University.

Tell us more about your journey and how you came to be where you are today. I learned Indian Classical Music (both Carnatic and Hindustani styles) on the violin for 18 years in Mumbai. From 1985 to 1995, I regularly performed in concerts all over India both as a soloist and accompanist on the violin. I came to the US in 1995 to attend Penn State University. At Penn State, I was exposed to many other music genres such as Jazz. I particularly developed a liking for Jazz because it offered a lot of scope for creative composition and improvisation just like Indian Classical Music. I then started creating my own 38

music compositions combining Indian Classical Music with Jazz, African, Irish, Middle Eastern and other world music genres. This gave me the opportunity to collaborate and perform with world class musicians who were very skilled in their respective genres. We performed together for many shows in both the West and East coasts of the US, many of which raised funds for charitable causes. Jazz Yatra, held in Broward County, FL, in both 2007 and 2008 was a perfect example of such a show, and it raised funds for Sahara, a charitable organization dedicated to support women who are victims of abuse and domestic violence. At the same time, my tryst with pure Indian classical music continued, and I performed concerts all over South Florida at venues such as The Shiva Vishnu Temple of South Florida, Florida Atlantic University, etc. as a soloist, accompanist as well as Jugalbandhi (duet of Hindustani and Carnatic music) artist. It is very important for me to teach, train and groom the next generation of musicians and artists. To this end, I teach violin to 15 students, both locally as well as through Skype. It is very important that these young talents living in North America get ample opportunities to collaborate with other musicians early on and learn to harness the power of digital technologies in making, performing and promoting music to the whole world. That is the mission of Florida Fine Arts, a non-profit 501c3 organization I recently started with a group of like-minded individuals.

Who is your Guru (teacher) now and when you started? My Gurus for Carnatic music were Smt. T.R. Balamani (Shankar Mahadevan is probably her

most famous student) and Shri. K. Shivakumar. I started learning Carnatic music on the violin in 1978 at the age of 5. I learned Hindustani music from Shri T.K. Patnaik from 1991 to 1995.

How long was your training? My formal training spanned 18 years. However, in any creative art form such as music, you learn practically every day listening to different artists and different kinds of music, performing and collaborating with other musicians etc. You also learn from your own students!

When was your first public performance? I began giving public performances at the age of 8, but they were short performances that lasted less than an hour. I gave my first full-fledged solo violin concert (that was almost 3 hours long) at the age of 12 for Music Triangle in Mumbai. I had both Mridangam and Ghatam accompaniments. After a somewhat nervous start, we really gelled as a group and the quality of music kept getting better as the concert progressed. Even after performing for almost 3 hours, I did not feel even an ounce of fatigue. It was such an exhilarating experience that I couldn’t wait to perform again and even today, I love performing and entertaining audiences.

How many public performances you have done so far? I have not kept count, but I would say I have given over 500 public performances. 40

Who do you consider to be a mentor and why? Many esteemed musicians and scholars have influenced my journey at different points of time, but my mother has had the most profound impact on my music. She inculcated in me the passion for music and that, to me, is the most important ingredient. Knowledge, skills, experience, all come afterward.

What advice do you have for young Indian Americans who wish to pursue a career in music or the performing arts?

performing concerts or for that matter any accomplishment at work.

I would tell every young and budding musician/ artist to “make sure you are passionate about the art form you pursue and with that will come success and most importantly, satisfaction.”

What do you think is the secret behind your success?

Success means different things to different people? What does it mean to you and how would you define it? The level of satisfaction you get when you do something is my most important yardstick of success. Of course, if you are performing in front of an audience, the same applies to the audience. If they leave the venue happy and satisfied yet yearning for more, then your efforts have been successful. Sometimes after a long day at work, I pick up the violin at 10 or 11 pm at night and the music that comes out for the next hour or so cannot be described using words. That experience and satisfaction trumps any number of awards or any amount of money I can make

The passion that I have for everything I do.

An American colleague once asked me an interesting question: “Why are Indians in the US at the forefront of a variety of fields?” What do you think? I think it is the democratic values that we have grown up with. It helps us be more open minded and accepting of various ideas even when they conflict with yours.

Who has played a crucial role in influencing the events of your life? How so? Since birth, my parents (especially my mother) have had a major influence. My mother taught me what it is to have passion for what you do. My

father taught me discipline and hard work that it takes to get somewhere. Their influence has understandably waned because we now live thousands of miles from each other. But my wife has now taken over! She has pushed me to explore different things whether it be the arts, the food I eat, the clothes I wear…..the list can go on and on! Because of that, my life experiences have become very diverse and it has helped me in myriad ways.

Favorite Quote: “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. You cannot get anywhere without hard work.” This quote is repeated to the point that it has become a cliché. Yet there is nothing closer to the truth than this quote.

Favorite Book: This is your brain on music: the science of a human obsession, by Daniel J. Levitin. This book is the ultimate union of art and science.

Favorite Indian Movie: Bajirao Mastani - I could watch this movie a thousand times just for the music.

Favorite Non-Indian Movie: Top Gun - love the electrifying aerial scenes of action.

Body Betrayed Beauty by Neha Ganju Tanna Book Review by Raj Shah, Managing Editor, Desh-Videsh

I

t was my privilege to attend book launch of Body Betrayed Beauty by Neha Ganju Tanna on January 4, 2020. For most of us living in South Florida, we have watched Neha, a sweet and bubbly girl, grow up, get married and become a mother in front of our own eyes. But it was also our misfortune to see her fighting stage four cancer and eventually, leave this world.

As a cancer survivor myself, I was thinking during the entire book launch event what Neha must have gone through. The thought also came in my mind that it could have been me who lost the battle with cancer. My train of thoughts continued while driving from Miami back to Coral Springs after book launch event, and I could not wait to begin reading the entire book. I was very tired emotionally, so I could not start the book that evening. But I could not sleep well, so I got up at 4 o’clock in the morning and began reading the book and finished the entire book in one seating. Neha Ganju Tanna left us too early after a short battle with cancer in October of 2016. She left behind her baby daughter, Aariyana, and her notes and writings, which were compiled into a book, Body Betrayed Beauty. Her wish was to publish her thoughts and musings and form a foundation to help people suffering in distress and pain due to this deadly disease. inspired by Neha, brings awareness to those who suffer with pain with serious illnesses like cancer. The mission of the organization is NEHA, “Never Endure Hurt Alone.” After reading the book, I found so many similarities between Neha and me. To start with, we both questioned GOD, and our destiny by asking “Why me?” Neha describes her feelings in a beautifully written poem in her book, “Chosen.”

Chosen I don’t know why I was chosen? I never hurt anybody, nor wished ill of anyone Not acted otherwise to shame anyone Both my body and mind are entangled Why does HE give so much ? If a person can’t endure This agony never comes to straightforward I don’t know why I was chosen I never wished ill of anyone The trajectory of my life has changed so much I set out to save others, but It is my own life that is now in danger Now I am fighting against time

Later in the book and in her own life, Neha answered her own question, accepted the situation, and figured out how to live your life whether you are healthy or sick. In the book on page 38, Neha advises: If you are healthy, the next time you have a bad day, be grateful for your good health. If you are sick, know that you are not alone. Others Just like you have feit the pain and torture of a failing sick body and all the agony that comes with it. It does not make your pain less, but there is comfort in knowing that someone else can understand the depth of your anguish. It is amazing to read a young person who writes like a spiritual leader. When I was fighting with my cancer, I was very open with all my family members and friends. I shared all the details, my pain and agony as well as when I had good days, my joy. I even talked about it in Desh-Videsh’s editorial column. As Neha mentioned in her book, friends and family members give you a lot of strength. Rather than paraphrasing Neha, let me include here what she says in her own words on page 94:

"Neha refused to let her diagnosis define her. Rather, she lived

Through my journey met many people who said “Don’t utter that word, cancer." They thought that saying it was a negative action, that it is better to be positive and think there is nothing going on. It is true that your mind controls your body and hence can afftect a result. But I do not fear the word cancer. It is just another word that defines the current medical condition afflicting my body. It does not, by any means, define me or limit the person I am. Only by accepting what is occurring within in, prepares me for what can be next but cannot control it. I still am the many roles I play in my personal and professional lives. They define me: Mother, wife, daughter, volunteer and a Disaster and Emergency Manager. Once again, this is a very profound and clear message to people like me who are fighting cancer or for that matter any serious illness. Neha’s Grandfather, Gopinath Raina ji (Papa ji)

whom I admired a lot, said when Neha passed away, “This is the truth of existence. We come alone and leave alone. The real test of life lies in the perennial question that we all ask, “Is this the life?” No answer. Not even the greatest sages have satisfactorily tackled.” Neha answers her own Grandfather’s question on page 106 by saying: I welcome death with open arms. It is just as much a part of living as breathing is. You cannot accomplish one without accepting the existence of the other. Do not fear it. It is frightening, but liberating. It is the journey up to the point of death that can be challenging. But it is not the last, the final act. I am not scared of dying.I am scared of losing my child. It is not my end. It’s not the end. “Neha refused to let her diagnosis define her. Rather, she lived and fought valiantly till the last, teaching her loved ones how to face adversity. The book, Body Betrayed Beauty is a

compilation of her writings near the end of her life,” Deepak Ganju, Neha’ s father, said at the book launch. Neha expressed her fighting spirit very well on page 46 by stating: But as a soldier, I will stand again because this battle is not nearly over. It has just started and I will fight. I will lose but eventually I will win. Even though Neha’s body was betrayed, her beauty and memory lives on through writing and through her non-profit organization. God bless her beautiful soul!

Ayurveda vs. Modern Medicine: Alternative or Complementary? By Chahna Tailor the side effects outweigh the benefits? Natural substances, on the other hand, take a little longer for results to manifest - but the benefit is that the product you are putting in your body is natural, treatment is catered to your specific body composition and elemental makeup, and is less likely to have side effects.

appy February! Hope this finds you in good health!

Speaking of health, what field of medicine do you use as your main form of treatment? Modern medicine or natural medicine? Most of us are likely to choose modern medicine. And why wouldn’t we? Any illness, disease, or sickness you can think about, there is a pharmaceutical treatment/cure for it and everywhere you go, there are billboards, commercials, and ads that show you a cure for what you or a loved one may be suffering from. Its impact on our health is so pronounced in our daily lives that we forget the old way of doing things. How many times have you used turmeric as an antiseptic and as a blood clotter when you hurt yourself? (And, let’s be honest, how many of us still do it? - I know I do!) 58

When you had nausea, how quick were you to put a few cloves in your mouth and let its juices do the job? Or put asafoetida in your belly button to get rid of bloating, indigestion, and stomach pain? Before Neosporin, antinausea capsules, and Tums, we used what nature gave us. As of 2017, Ayurveda, India’s science of life, was still being used by 77% of Indian households, according to a report by the Confederation of Indian Industry and PricewaterhouseCoopers. This number has definitely increased since then but can we say the same for those of us that have moved abroad?

But, the debate seems to be - do we go all in on one mode of treatment? Well, I have a counter question for you - why do we have to pick? Why can’t we use both as complementary treatments? Ayurveda is used as a preventive medical system. According to Ayurveda, there is a prognosis of disease: • Easy to cure • Difficult to cure • Incurable, but in which the symptoms are manageable • Incurable and symptoms cannot be managed After a certain point, Ayurveda can only be used for palliative

We are used to the modern way of doing things. Modern medicine is quick and convenient but may come with a long list of side effects. How often have you seen a commercial where FEBRUARY 2020 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

care whereas there may be further steps that can be taken with modern medicine; there are surgeries and treatments that have saved lives in miraculous ways. Before we get to an incurable stage, consider Ayurveda as a method of prevention. After all, health is wealth.

The much-awaited teaser of Damaged 2 is out. The Hungama based web-series starring Hina Khan and Adhyanyan Suman, released on January 14, 2020. Directed by Ekant Babani, this web series is Hina Khan’s first digital project. Hina Khan’s latest music video titled “Raanjhana” with her close friend Priyank Sharma is already trending on YouTube. The former Big Boss contestant Hina Khan took to Instagram to share the poster and teaser of the upcoming season, which was captioned, “A glimpse of Damaged Season 2. Bollywood Movie Review: Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior Cast: Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Kajol Devgn, Sharad Kelkar, Jagapathi Babu, Luke Kenny Director: Om Raut Music Director: Ajay-Atul, Sachet– Parampara, Shankar– Ehsaan–Loy, Sandeep Shirodkar

Visually Enticing; Historically Adrift Rewriting history is perilous as it is often hard to portray characters, events, and locations with accuracy. A slight misrepresentation or loose facts can hurt the sentiments of a community, or it can present a distorted history. However, the makers of the movie Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior have taken the liberty to never mind the historical inaccuracies. So keeping that aside, the movie appeals to cinematographic senses and presents an ode to another mighty Maratha warrior - Tanhaji Malusare after last month’s release of Panipat.

the Fort of Kondhana. Kajol portrays the ideal role of Tanaji’s wife, Savitribai Malusare. Though not much space is given to highlight her character, it is still a treat to see her sharing the screen with her husband after a long time. Saif’s solid performance embraces a barbaric and ruthless role. The stellar performances by Saif Ali Khan as villainous Udaybhan, and Ajay Devgn as a brave warrior Tanhaji will keep you on the edge of your seat. Directed by Om Raut, this thrill-packed action movie is credited with climactic sequences, picturesque locations, high on CGI, and 3D cinematographic, which is impressive and visually stunning to look at. The movie released on January 10, 2020.

In the late 17th century, the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb (Luke Kenny) strives to expand his empire down South with the only obstacle in his path, i.e., defeating the Mighty Marathas who are hell-bent on bringing their Swarajya back under the headship of Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj (Sharad Kelkar). In a deceptive ploy, set up by Aurangzeb, Shivaji had to surrender 23 forts including the Fort of Kondhana - strategically important to rule the Southern part of India - to the Rajput General, Mirza Raje Jai Singh. Aurangzeb sends Udaybhaan Singh Rathod (Saif Ali Khan) armored with cannon ‘Naagin’ powerful enough to destroy the fort. Ajay Devgn plays the eponymous Maratha warrior Tanhaji Malusare, a military leader (Subedar) in the army of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, known for his great valor and patriotism. Postponing his son’s wedding, he led Maratha forces to recapture 64

Aamir Ali and Sanjeeda Shaikh, two of Indian television’s most popular actors, have been together for seven years and were married in 2012. However, all doesn’t seem well in this fairy tale romance. Rumors surfaced that Sanjeeda and Aamir have been living separately for over a month. Sanjeeda’s vague social media posts have added further fuel to the fire. Sources confirmed that Sanjeeda is now living in her parental home having walked out on Aamir. The reasons and cause of friction amongst the two television actors is yet to be confirmed by either party. Sanjeeda and Aamir’s separation is particularly heartbreaking as the couple recently welcomed their newborn daughter in this world. Ajay Singh Chaudhary Wants Better Content

Ajay Singh Chaudhary, who has been away from the public eye for almost two years, returns to small screens with a negative role in Tenali Rama. Chaudhary is known for his work in shows like Uttaran and Rishton Ka Chakravyuh, but stopped working in response to the stagnation that he felt had seeped into social dramas. Chaudhary expressed disappointment at the abrupt end of Rishton Ka Chakravyuh that despite a promising start, fizzled out and lost nuance in its characters and plot. Chaudhary is determined to chase and be part of projects that is high on content. He is hopeful that with the steady rise of streaming platforms like Hotstar, Netflix, and Amazon, actors will find more opportunities to be part of layered narratives. Chaudhary returns to television because he is excited to pursue a role in the historical/ mythological genre. He is aware that mythological/ historical dramas have a specific appeal to Indian audiences and comes with a set time limit. The pre-determined timeline ensures that the content remains engaging and nuanced and allows actors to play larger-than-life characters. Chaudhary implores television writers to experiment with content and new ways to tell stories. FEBRUARY 2020 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

Nehha Pendse Defends New Husband

Nehha Pendse’s recent wedding to businessman ShardulBayas on January 5, 2020 became a target for social media trolls. Bayas’s two divorces and his two daughters from previous marriages became a subject of mockery and mean tweets. Pendsee, who is known for her roles in Indian dramas like Bhagyalakshmi and May I Come In Madam? defended her new husband’s past. She reminded trolls that the focus on career in modern day life means that most people marry late in life and have multiple relationships. Pendsee asserts that she isn’t a virgin either and does not hold Bayas’s divorcees against him. She finds his faith in love and marriage inspirational. Pendsee lashed out against the trolls on social media by posting pictures of her working out in a gym. She asserts that she intends to work and live indifferent to a troll’s opinion who isn’t happy for her and only seeks her attention. Pensee and Bayas got engaged in August 2019 and married after five months of courtship. The couple are scheduled to go on their honeymoon in April 2020. Pendsee’s fans wish her a happy married life. 68

What Our Advertisers are Saying “Desh-Videsh – is a gorgeous publication! It’s no wonder why it is the most popular South Asian publication in the Southeast. We have been an advertiser for several years and we are confident in the service they provide and the return we get back. We strongly recommend advertising in Desh-Videsh!’ Amish Thakkar - Fine Art Production LLC Desh-Videsh – The Wedding Issue is a publication that understands a wedding should be as unforgettably unique as the couple getting married. Seema Samji - Zamana Lifestyles Photography “Desh-Videsh – is one of the best put together magazines in the industry. The organized layout and wonderful design aspects of the magazine make it simply stunning. It keeps readers coming back for more and keeping the magazine. Our company has done extremely well with our advertisements. Many brides come to us saying they saw our ad in Desh-Videsh.” Remmal Patel - Occasions by Shangrila
