Have You Seen This Ship??? The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc is based in Beacon, New York, with a mission to protect the Hudson River, surrounding wetlands and waterways through advocacy and public education. Founded by folk singer Pete Seeger with his wife Toshi Seeger in 1966, the organization is known for its sailing vessel, the sloop Clearwater, and its annual music and environmental festival, the Great Hudson River Revival. The sloop Clearwater, a replica vessel modeled after the Dutch sloops, was launched on May 17, 1969 from Harvey Gamage Shipyard in South Bristol, Maine. Clearwater is a work boat, sailing from town to town modeling her course after the Dutch sloops of the 18th and 19th centuries. These cargo vessels were specially designed for the variable winds, currents and depths of the Hudson. Their cargoes and crews were the main communication link between riverfront towns and outlying areas which now house one-tenth of this nation’s population. The Clearwater offers: The Sailing Classroom – Educational Group Sails: History, biology, physics and environmental science come to life for your school or educational group. Public Sail Adventures: Enjoy a relaxing three hour sail aboard an historic tall ship! Sailing from docks up and down the Hudson River, experience the beauty of the river in the company of family and friends. Private and Corporate Charters: Charter America’s environmental flagship for your next special event. Available for private parties, weddings and corporate events. Apprenticeships, Internships and Volunteering: Join Clearwater’s crew for a week, a month, or longer as you develop your skills as a sailor and environmental educator. No experience is necessary for these once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. Great Hudson River Revival: This year the Clearwater Festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 15 and 16 at Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson, Westchester County. Since the 1960s, the Clearwater Festival has grown into the country’s largest annual environmental celebration featuring seven sustainably powered stages with diverse music, dance, storytelling, education and activism attracting thousands of people of all ages to the shores of the Hudson River. The Festival also offers juried crafts, the Green Living Expo, the Working Waterfront with small boat exhibits and rides, an artisanal food & farm market, environmental education displays and exhibits, and the Circle of Song where audience participation is the focus. The revenue raised by these programs are used to support Clearwater’s numerous educational programs and its work toward environmental and social justice—as well as keeping the sloop Clearwater afloat. Named to commemorate the historic signal fires that blazed from the summit to warn General George Washington and the Continental Army about British troop movements! Beacon! Historic Fishkill Landing; one of the oldest landings along the Hudson. Revolution War supplies were transported to Newburgh and New Jersey from England. Beacon! Denning’s Point; where in 1781, Alexander Hamilton set his ideas on paper in a series of editorials that became the Federalist Papers and incorporated into the United States Constitution! Beacon! Known as “Hat Manufacturing Capitol of the US” with nearly 500 hat factories in the 1800’s. Today, Beacon is known as the only Hudson River town with both river and mountain access promoting art! A dozen galleries dot the Main Street and Internationally known Dia: Beacon Riggio Galleries attracts visitors from New York City and around the world! Dia: Beacon is a 300,000 square foot museum with a collection from the 1960’s to present. The museum is housed in a former Nabisco box printing facility built in 1929 and is listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places. Beacon Arts (www.beaconarts.com) is celebrating their 10th Anniversary this year! The arts are alive and well in this waterfront destination riverfront city. Second Saturday’s are held every month and is a city-wide celebration of the arts. This is an all day event with many galleries and shops open late with art receptions, music, food, wine and other special events. Windows on Main, August 10th - September 14th is a collaborative project between artists and business with a display of art along Beacon’s historic Main Street. Many festivals are held throughout the year at Riverfront Park. RIVERFEST is Saturday, June 29th - a day of music, food and crafts. The Beacon Sloop Club’s STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL Sunday, June 9th from noon to 5pm. The CORN FESTIVAL Sunday, August 11th from noon to 5pm. The PUMPKIN FESTIVAL Friday, October 13th from noon to 5pm. Several charming B&B’s are in town and near the train station making it a perfect romantic getaway. There are many unique shops to explore on Main Street as well as restaurants of all cuisines. Even D.W. Griffith knew the area held magic by filming 3 movies atop Mt. Beacon from 1909-1910 including “The Red Man’s View” with Mary Pickford. Mt. Beacon has served as a Mecca for many from New York City since the early 1900’s. In 1926, the Mount Beacon Incline Railway and casino resort complex enjoyed a banner year. People would take the Homer Ramsdell Steamship up from New York City for a day or two stay. Over 110,000 passenger’s road the railway to the top of the mountaintop. From 1902 to 1978, Mount Beacon Incline Railway was one of the steepest incline railways in existence (a 74% grade). It took an estimated 3.5 million people up to the 1,540-foot summit. Today, the Beacon Incline Railway Restoration Society is working to return the ride to its former glory! Today, Mount Beacon State Park offers hiking, picnicing, bird watching, dog walking (with a leash) up the strenuous 1+ mile rugged trail (allow 3+ hours). Kykuit, The Rockefeller Estate Gardens in Sleepy Hollow: This hilltop paradise was home to four generations of the Rockefeller family, beginning with the philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil. Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller’s 20th century art and sculpture collection features the works by Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and many others. Open Mid-May through November to group tours of 10 or more. This is a two and a half hour guided tour which includes the morning and brook gardens, the Italian garden, the Adam and Eve fountain area, as well as several terraced areas featuring classical and contemporary sculpture. The Garden & Sculpture Tour does not include any buildings and is not wheelchair accessible, due to the many steps and hilly terrain. The tour is not recommended for persons with balance or mobility problems. Sturdy shoes are highly recommended. An internationally renowned sculpture park with over 100 sculptures set in 500 acres of rolling fields and woodland. Sculptures are by some of the most acclaimed artists of our era. Works encompass the years from post-World War II to the present and include gifts, acquisitions, specially commissioned site-specific works, and loans. The focus of the collection has been on large-scale abstract sculptures, much of it in steel; it also includes figurative work and sculptures in stone, earth, and other materials. Originally envisioned as a museum devoted to the Hudson River School, by 1961 its founders had become committed to modern sculpture. Early purchases were sited directly outside the Museum Building as part of a formal garden scheme. However, with the 1966 purchase of thirteen works from the estate of sculptor David Smith (1906-1965), Storm King began to place sculpture directly in the landscape. Opus 40 in Saugerties: In 1938, Harvey Fite one of the founders of the Bard College Fine Arts Department, purchased an abandoned quarry reportedly for $250. Over a period of 37 years he created the monumental world-acclaimed 6 ½-acre bluestone sculpture now known as Opus 40. During this period, he also acquired additional 70+ acres Photo Submitted By Opus 40 and built several structures, including a beautiful large wood home, a studio, garage, blacksmith shop and the Quarryman’s Museum, home of his unique collection of historic quarrying tools. Constructed by this one man, using dry-key stone techniques adapted from the Mayans, Opus 40 is made from millions of pieces of indigenous bluestone, laid by hand, creating a labyrinthine world of finely fitted stone, swirling with ramps and terraces constructed around pools, trees, and fountains, rising out of bedrock a half mile deep. One can walk through, around, and over it, from the deepest recesses of its subterranean pathways (16 feet below ground) up to the nine-ton monolith that is the epicenter and summit of the sculpture three stories above ground. Opus 40 is a breathtaking blend of artistry and landscape. Striving to fulfill the mission to develop Opus 40 into a world class arts and cultural destination, Opus 40 has presented numerous concerts including Sonny Rollins, Jimmy Cliff, Orleans and Pat Metheny, as well as theater and dance performances, lectures and many other educational and community events. Opus 40 has been featured in the New York Times, Architectural Digest, on network TV, and in many other publications and media and has been designated a national historic place. I’ve lived in the Hudson valley for well over 10 years now. Within the last five years I have begun to realize how wonderful this area we reside in really is. In those five years I also picked up cooking, along with food blogging as a hobby. The Hudson Valley truly has some great places to eat. In 2010 I started The Hudson Valley Wing Tour to showcase some of these establishments with a focus on chicken wings. Everyone loves a delicious plate of hot wings. They also allow for so much creativity within how they are cooked and the sauce itself. I set out three years ago to find the best wing spots in this beautiful area and now I can share a handful of them here with you. Primo’s Bar and Grill, Clintondale - Primo’s was one of my favorite experiences I’ve had eating wings. The restaurant’s atmosphere was
excellent. It is a great place to go with great friends. Primo’s has an extensive menu and great daily specials. The wings are a menu all on their own with over 20 flavors to choose from. Such an extensive flavor list is always a sign of true wing lovers. The wings come crispy and coated nicely in your chosen sauce. The service we experienced here was excellent and the staff is as friendly as can be. Must try: The Parmesan Garlic Wings. These wings came covered in a buttery garlic sauce, matted with parmesan cheese and fresh garlic, delicious! 845.883.6112 Hobnobbin Pub, Poughkeepsie Upon entering this older, rustic looking establishment, we found a heartwarming, welcoming interior. The wonderfully attentive staff made us feel right at home here at Hobnobbin. I ordered wings with both the “hotter” and “hottest” sauce to

sample, and what a treat that turned out to be. The real star was the “hottest” sauce. It was mild enough for your average person to enjoy, just the right amount of heat and the most perfect flavor anyone could expect to have. The sauce was made fresh with visible flakes of pepper, I really enjoyed it. Hobnobbin is also known for their burgers and they were delicious as well. Must Try: “Hottest” Sauce. Great heat and great flavor make this one of the best traditional sauces I’ve had. 845.462.6810 Hickory BBQ Smokehouse, Kingston - Located in the heart of the Hudson Valley, Hickory is creating absolutely amazing meals! Here you can find perfectly smoked meats, cooked to perfection. The sauces at Hickory are amazing, trying every variety is a must here. The soy glazed chicken wings are incredible! You can tell much time and effort is put in to everything here. Owned by Chef Rob VanVoorhis, a Culinary Institute of America Graduate, ASU has been cooking up the best BBQ in the Northeast. What started out as a roadside operation in the Pawling, NY area has evolved into a massive BBQ Catering operation. ASU creates one of the best wings I have ever tried. Must Try: Rob’s Buffalo Wings. Seasoned, Smoked, and Sauced. www.allsmokedup.com Bridgeview Tavern, Sleepy Hollow - Located almost directly on The Hudson River, this is a true Hudson Valley experience. Bridgeview is one of my favorite hangout spots. The bar offers delicious craft beers on tap with new choices nearly every week or so.

The restaurant is a very warm and friendly place to be. Window seats offer beautiful views of The Hudson River. Bridgeview’s wings are smoked in house and are absolutely amazing. Their BBQ wings are top notch. The wings are perfectly sized and come covered in sauce. Monday nights at The Tavern are Wing Night and offers discounted pricing on the wings. Must Try: The Buffalo/BBQ sauce. A perfect combination of traditional buffalo sauce and their house made BBQ sauce create perfection. www.bridgeviewtavern.com Billy Joe’s Ribworks, Newburgh - Billy Joe’s is the place to be on a beautiful spring or summer evening. Located directly on The Hudson River, they offer dining on their outdoor deck which serves up picture perfect views of the river. The atmosphere at Billy Joe’s is a truly unique experience offering a neat and nifty décor. The wings here are spice rubbed, pit smoked, and then charbroiled, and come covered in a delectable BBQ
sauce. The crew at Billy Joe’s are always on their toes and very helpful and friendly. The restaurant offers some of the best BBQ food in the area with an unbeatable view. Must Try: Smoked Out Wings, the spicy BBQ sauce goes amazing with the perfectly smoked chicken. www.ribworks.com Mahoney’s Irish Pub, Poughkeepsie - Mahoney’s is in a great location right at the train station making it very convenient. The inside is a nice, an upscale styled place offering a great menu. I choose their wings as the starter to my meal. The wings come in either a choice of 10 or 20 pieces. They are cooked wonderfully, very crispy and juicy. Mahoney’s buffalo sauce has just a hint of heat and a great flavor. I also had the Celtic burger and I must say it was amazing. The Irish atmosphere was a wonderful addition. Must Try: Mahoney’s Buffalo sauce, perfect combination of heat and flavor. www.mahoneysirishpub.com Memphis Mae’s BBQ Bistro, Croton-on-Hudson - Located under 1,000 feet from The Hudson River, Memphis Mae’s is a great choice as a Hudson Valley restaurant. Mae’s is a small bistro style restaurant and they’re serving some of the best and most creative BBQ and comfort food found in Westchester County. The
interior is warm and inviting and the staff is always offering a conversation. Offered here are four different sauces for their wings. Hot, Teriyaki, Memphis BBQ, and Mustard BBQ. The wings are smoked and come out nice, juicy and smothered in sauce. Must Try: Memphis BBQ wings, comes covered in Mae’s signature sauce it’s finger lickin’ good! www.memphismaes.com
Chipotle Raspberry Chicken Wings Recipe With warmer, more inviting weather upon us, sometimes the best option is a great home cooked meal. I like to invite some friends to come over and sit outside conversating over a nice plate of wings. My favorite wing sauce recipe is my Chipotle Raspberry Chicken Wings. Personally, my favorite way to cook wings is on my vertical smoker however you can do it many other ways. Those who have deep fryers can drop the wings in there or you could just bake them. Either way once you have your cooked wings it’s time to sauce them. For this sauce you need a jar of seedless raspberry jam, a can of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, butter, and minced garlic. In a sauce pan under medium heat combine, 1/5th stick of butter and 2 tablespoons of the garlic, about 2 cups of the jam, and a couple of the peppers chopped up finely and stir it all together. Once its combined, let it sit a minute or two and toss the wings in it. Enjoy these wings! They are perfect for the spring/summer seasons and sure to be a hit at any party!

If you love the outdoors, you will love the multiuse trails contructed on abandoned railroad lines throughout the Hudson Valley. Take a leisurely walk or bike ride through the countryside while enjoying the history and beauty the Hudson Valley has to offer. D&H Canal Heritage - Thirty-five miles of historic adventure from Kingston to Ellenville. This trail provides access to many outstanding natural and historic resources. Experience the D&H Canal towpaths and locks, historic hamlets, monumental cement caves and kilns, scenic woodlands and stream valleys, wetlands, and other natural resources along the way. www.dandhcorridor.org Multiuse trail, W, H, J, B, HS, D Dutchess Rail Trail – Extends 10.6 miles between Morgan Lake in Poughkeepsie and the restored Hopewell Depot in Hopewell Junction. At the southern end of the trail, the Hopewell Depot is worth a visit, with a small photo gallery and plenty of information about the trail as well as area attractions. www.dutchessrailtrail.com. Multiuse trail, W, H, J, B, D Harlem Valley Rail Trail – The scenic rail-trail has been built in segments, and there is still work to be done to open all 46 miles of the planned trail. For now you can take in two segments, which total nearly 15 miles and get a good sense of the future for this rail-trail. The southern end of the trail begins at the Metro North Railroad Station in Wassaic and spans north for nearly 11 miles to Millerton. Farmland stretches all around you, followed by red-cedar scrubland and beaver ponds. www.hvrt.org. Multiuse trail, W, H, J, B, D, S Heritage Trail (aka Orange Heritage Trail) - Much of this trail sails past wide fields of corn and wheat. The right-of-way is 11.5 miles. The longer portion starts in Monroe at Crane Park. In the village of Chester is a restored stone-façade train station that serves as the Chester Depot Museum and shops in the village offer mid-trip refreshments. Before you reach the village, you pass an old cemetery with weathered headstones dating to the 1800s. Between Chester and Goshen, the trail is lined with trees as it passes through farmland, wooded lots and by residential developments. www.orangepathways.org. Multiuse trail, W, H, J, B, HS, D, WH Hudson Valley Rail Trail - From the Walkway Over The Hudson to the Hamlet of Highland and beyond, enjoy this 4 mile adventure through time and nature. The HVRT is west of the mighty Hudson River showcasing it’s beauty and splendor of the countryside with creeks, ponds, and the surrounding Illinois Mountain. www.hudsonvalleyrailtrail.net. Multiuse trail, W, H, J, B, HB, D The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail - Flanked by the majestic Shawangunk Mountains, the trail stretches along the Wallkill River through the Ulster County Village of New Paltz, from Rosendale to Gardiner and extends 12.2 miles. Along the way it passes through woods, open fields, and agricultural lands, and links the hamlet of Gardiner with downtown New Paltz. www.gorailtrail.org. Multiuse trail, W, H, J, B, HB, D Walkway Over the Hudson - Built in 1888 the steel-truss Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge was the longest bridge in the world for a spell, stretching 6,767 feet (approximately 1.25 miles) over the Hudson River. Today the bridge is a State Historic Park 212 feet above the Hudson River and providing spectacular views of the Hudson River.
