Welcome
by Ashwin Soni, GHU Ambassador
Dear Members, Friends, Well-wishers Namaste, Jai Shree Krishna, Jai Sia Ram
the ground! We need more people to come forward to help and support our Centre.
Here is a short report from the Ambassadors. The Ambassadors being Piyooshbhai Chotai, Kirtikumar Patel, Illeshbhai Patel, Umesh Nayee and myself.
We encourage volunteering not just as a way to meet the goals of our own organisations, but because promoting participation in all its forms benefits the individual and our whole Community. It does not matter if you are young or old, if you have free time then please do come to the Centre to provide wide and varied seva as per your liking.
The role of the Ambassadors is to help and support GHU Committee. We also guide and check that the Committee is taking good care of the Community and Centre. At December 2016 meeting with GHU Committee we recommended changes to the structure and helped to set the budget for 2017. Our advice as ever, is to focus as far as possible on your mission and long-term goals. Serve, respect and politely work with the Community in order that we have their utmost support and involvement. The year ended with more transparent Treasury information. As we can track the information monthly so it has become easier to control, adjust and improve our financial position. We have an outstanding debt of ÂŁ1.20 million. The Committee plans to reduce it to ÂŁ1.00 in the next three months with surplus funds from last year and Gift Aid income. The challenge to raise more funds will continue until we are debt free! Hence more focus on new ideas to raise funds will be considered this year but holding on the present methods.
Finally did you know Gurjar Hindu Union will celebrate the golden jubilee next year? The Committee is setting up a steering group to plan the celebrations. If you have good memories, photographs, memorabilia or story then please contact us. In May this year we shall share more information of the plans for next year. The Ambassadors have pledged to help, support and guide GHU. We really need others to join in to make our Centre and Sansta successful and prosperous.

We shall continue to hold monthly meetings with the Committee where we review short, medium and long term plans. All areas of our Centre had an excellent 2016. More people hired and used our excellent facilities, the facilities got refreshed with minimum costs. The Committee focused hard to keep the Centre in a clean and tidy condition. However the Committee is thin on

Presidents Report
by Kokilaben Patel, GHU President/Director
Jai Shree Krishna, Jai Siya Ram, Jai Ambe, Jai Jinendra, Jai Jalarambapa I feel honoured once again to be asked to become the President of GHU in 2017. Most people will have seen me in the Mandir for many years. For your information, I joined GHU 30 years ago as an ad hoc volunteer to help my mother, Sardaben to cook in the kitchen help with cleaning before the Spencer Road Mandir. My inspiration to join was my mother who gave lot of seva, like so many other ladies of her generation did. Lot of good work is getting carried out in our Centre, like cleaning, clearing, cooking, maintenance, marketing, publicity, accounts, education, sports, yoga, dance, drama, music, school visits etc. We need more people to come forward. There is still so much more we need to – so I urge you to help and support our Centre. My humble plea to all past committee members and volunteers, please come back and help and support in whatever way you can to move our Sanstha forward. We appreciate and accommodate personal and family priorities. They should always come first but do please spare some time for the Hindu Community of Crawley. For your information, the leadership and management of the Gurjar Hindu Union Sanatan Mandir and Community Centre (SMCC) is divided into nine departments (see below) and currently managed by eight elected Governors. Bharatbhai Lukka was the elected President and Chair of Governors for one year for 2016. GHU Governors liaise for strategic guidance with the influential GHU Ambassadors, Kirtibhai Patel, Piyooshbhai Chotai, Illeshbhai Patel Umeshbhai Nayee and Ashwinbhai Soni. Each department has Committee Members and/or Committed Volunteers. GHU is
fortunate to have a substantial team of both these members together with other devoted members who give their seva when we require their help and skills. Managing and running SMCC or Apple Tree Centre (ATC) as we are now called is a challenging task. All departments as below must run effectively and efficiently by volunteers. For years, GHU has relied on volunteer support. We continue to do the same even today. With the current debt it is prudent that we have follow good financial planning and adopt careful management systems. There are no paid staff (except Shastriji) which is critical for the sustainability of our Centre. Like all organisations, GHU too is an evolving entity. New issues and challenges mean that Committee changes take place to meet the needs of the Centre. Our management structure is flexible to accommodate changing needs and the availabilities of a volunteer workforce. The table below shows the 20172018 structure. The Governors and Committee members meet every Thursday evening to discuss and progress the work programme. The new system and structure has been running for five years. It is early days but we are very optimistic that 2017 would be another very successful year for GHU with all the religious, social and cultural programmes held successfully. 2016 was a very challenging but with good financial planning and organisation, coupled with a lot of hard work it was a very successful year. Our finance volunteers have caught up with all the work and will enable us to claim the giftaid which will help reduce our debt. Bharatbhai has devoted many hours for sanstha to help us to achieve this work in 2016.

I am indebted to him as all systems are now in place to claim gift aid regularly. In 2017 my focus will be on Training, Catering and Religious. I have started training and with the specific focus on Catering Department. Rohitbhai Patel, the Catering Governor will be given more authority to make decision for managing and also ensuring community is welcome to give seva. He has agreed to provide excellent customer service. He is happy to change menu to suit hirers proving to make a win win for all. He will no doubt keep in mind to control and manage costs tightly for running kitchen. The Religious Governor, Chandubhai works wonders in Religious activities. Here we have teams who give seva who do not come in front but we acknowledge their input and I thank you very much. Other Teams are always there to help the Governor at events on request.
Here again I would like to see cross departmental training and awareness meetings regularly. My challenge will be to focus on training and reorganising the Governor in order to facilitate clear ways of working and making workload easier for all volunteers and Shastriji. In 2017 I am also focusing on networking with all Group Leader who give their dedicated service to the Community. My vision for 2017 is SEVA and involve all attending classes to appreciate benefits of Volunteering. Networking with groups making of a bigger GHU Youth family supporting one another’s programmes. Bharatnatyam, Shakha Youth Group,Yoga,Diva Dance,Gujarati School. 2016 The Committee applied for planning permission to convert changing rooms into Shastriji’s living quarters, build storage at the back of Main Mandir leading into the Hall and gain permission to build Dining Hall. The work will start as soon as we receive approval. I shall oversee completion of this work with support from Ashwinbhai Soni. 8

If you would like to come and work and give Seva then please contact me or any Governor. On a lighter note, the pressure is now on you the Community to donate your skills to you sanstha like many volunteers are doing. We need IT Skills, Leaders, Management, Cooking and many more. My humble request as your President is to come and join and have a good laugh and meet new people, learn skills as a volunteer. We work with Open Door policy. Governors are there to hear from you with your ideas that will benefit your Mandir and management. SMCC requires your professional skills. Why Volunteer So many lives are enriched by this organisations that provides invaluable services to our communities , without the work of dedicated volunteers, simply would not be able to function. Volunteering offers Hindu community of Crawley and catchment towns and villages an opportunity to see the world through new eyes and to better understand it. When we experience different cultures and alternate ways of living, we not only develop an appreciation and compassion for others, but learn to better understand ourselves and ultimately grow in that understanding. We realise how lucky we are, and we want to give back. Maybe we are searching for another life purpose in this self-centred ‘me, me, me’ society. Or it may simply be that we feel it is our duty as human beings to better the lives of those less fortunate. There are as many reasons as to why people volunteer as there are volunteers themselves. The beauty of volunteering lies in the fact that when you give, you receive so much more in return. You will: k have compassion for others k gain self-confidence and self esteem k discover your strengths and talents k develop a sense of independence k raise your social awareness, k make new acquaintances, new skills k interact with a diverse range of people k make life-long friends k create challenging and fulfilling experiences that will turn into long-lasting memories k after retirement continue to work to save loneliness, avoid depression and lead healthy enjoyeable life 10
by Kokilaben Patel Volunteering also enhances your working life. You will: k learn social and technical skills that are transferable to any business environment k develop interpersonal, team-building and problem-solving skills k gain hands-on work experience By volunteering, you will change the lives of others by giving them the hope to realise their dreams. In doing so, you will inspire others to give of themselves. After such an experience, you will undoubtedly glow, and those around you will bask in your light. Get Involved! Crawley Arya Shakha Objectives: At Crawley Arya Shakha (part of HSS UK) we focus on children aged 6 – 25yrs old on character building, physical fitness, training for soft skills like team work, leadership and confidence building leading to personality development, always with Hindu ethos and cultural values as the backdrop. Background: We started life on 7th July 2013 and slowly we have built a committed Hindu community of 25+ strong, confident and proud young Hindus. This milestone has been achieved through weekly 1hr 15minutes of fun filled sessions every Sunday morning at 11am where we play games, sing and learn about our culture together!
by Pranav & Chitra
Structure & Responsibilities: Pranav Shukla: Mukhya Shikshak - (Shakha lead) responsible for effective weekly functioning of the shakha. Chtira Shah: Karyawahika - (Coordinator) responsible for liaising with all internal and external bodies to ensure clear communication and regular interaction (i.e. GHU and HSS) Krishna Bhojani / Jignesh Gadhvi: Utsav Pramukh - (Events Lead) responsible for organising major Hindu festivals (i.e. Holi, Uttarayan), as well as providing any support to GHU.
It is fascinating to for us as Shikshaks (teachers) to see these kids develop and blossom into the next generation of diligent human being rather than being stuck to their gaming consoles. smart phones or tablets. This is big achievement of our small attempt at bringing these young minds closer to the their own Hindu roots. Methodology: HSS UK is 50 years old voluntary, non-profit, social & cultural organisation. HSS UK promotes diversity and unity. It works on ethos of Hinduism- universal acceptance and tolerance. More than 2000 people of age range 3 to 85 years come together on the weekly basis in more than 110 places in the UK. 50 years of contribution of HSS UK is based on its three principles: Sanskar (virtues, ethos and moral values), Sewa (Selfless Service) & Sanghatan (Unity). Association: We are both proud and grateful to operate in Crawley with full support, guidance and association with the GHU.
Crawley Arya Shakha has an aim to nurture human beings that have a passion and respect for all things around them. We attempt to instil discipline, teamwork, confidence, and other key skills.
We run every Sunday at Apple Tree Centre from 11am till 12:15pm We are guided by the wisdom and knowledge of the Gurjar Hindu Union and Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh.
