GHU is celebrating the 5th Anniversary since opening the Centre in May 2010
II Jai Shree Krishna II As you may know we are celebrating our 5th Anniversary this year. Five wonderful years have gone past since we built our dream and wonderful the Apple Tree Centre! So what have we got planned to celebrate the 5th Anniversary? We have dedicated 2015 as Hindu Heritage Events project. We are grateful to receive support from Crawley Borough Council, West Sussex County Council and Heritage Lottery Fund to organise:• A Community Dance and Drama Show. For this we are inviting all Crawley communities to join in to celebrate the 5th Anniversary. A Mega 5th Anniversary Community Dance and Drama show will be held at the Hawth on 8th November. If you would like to take part in the show then do let us know. • We are also taking the opportunity to document oral history of six members of our community. This will involve recording and documenting their entire life experience from leaving their homeland, settling in Crawley and joys and issues faced as a member of GHU. • Additionally we are recording and documenting the design and architectural features of outside and inside of our Mandir consisting of ornate and magnificent features. Our ambition is to continue the Hindu Heritage theme every year. If you do wish to help and support or indeed wish to get involved then please get in touch with Ashwin Soni : 07833 252551 Jignesh Gadhavi: 07972 039109 4

YOGA CLASSES GHU YOGA Class are now running at a fast pace every Sunday with excellent registered yoga teachers Simitaben Raja and Gomtiben Nayee . They have become so popular that we are now running two sessions in a week. Every Sunday mornings and every Thursday evenings. Shobhaben co ordinates the class every Sunday. Report by Gomtiben our inhouse YOGA TEACHER Yoga is becoming immensely popular in the western world and the benefits of Yoga exercises are now scientifically proven and also approved by the fitness industry. Through practicing Yoga for the last ten years, I have managed to help my family members and friends cure their health problems such as thyroid, high blood pressure, arthritis, migraine as well as many other illnesses. Yoga provides a complete package of physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. The word “Yog” is derived from ancient Indian language Sanskrit word “Yuj” which means union and all the Yoga exercises are designed to unite the body, mind and soul to bring balance, harmony & peace. Yoga was founded in ancient India 5000 years ago. Regular practice of Yoga increases physical strength, energises the body and keeps the mind calm and focused. In today’s modern world, where life is so stressful,Yoga provides the perfect solution to overcome all the physical, emotional and mental problems. The beauty of Yoga is, it goes down to the root of the problems and fixes the system, not just the symptoms! Yoga is for everyone, whether you are new to Yoga or already practicing it, you will gain an immense amount of knowledge in Yoga, Ayurveda and Reflexology. So come along to rejuvenate, relax, energise and get fit! Yoga classes run every Sunday morning from 11am-12noon and Thursday even 6pm-7pm at the Apple tree Centre, Ifield. Raju Bhai Dave (Shastriji)
People of Crawley said good bye with some sadness to Bharatbhai Dave – and warmly welcomed Rajubhai Dave for our temple
Shastriji promotes “Satyam Vada Dharmam Chara”, “Speak the truth and do your duty according to the Shastras”.
Raju bhai Dave is a Brahmin and was born in the small village of Kathitak in Jamnagar district, India. At the tender age of twelve, young Rajubhai left home to gain further knowledge in Sanskrit and the Hindu religion in Sandipani Vidyaniketan in Porbandar. In 1992 he obtained his status as Acharya . Sandipani is founded and inspired by Sant Shree Rameshbhai Oza, also known as PP Bhaishree. Rajubhai studied there and qualified with a Master’s Degree Sanskrit. The young Shastriji has also worked closely with Pujya Bhaishri, served at the Hari Mandir in Porbandar, and is fully trained in all Hindu religious activities that would traditionally take place at a Mandir. Rajubhai took part in Bhaishree Kathas offering his service to Bhaishree in India and overseas. Bhaishri himself chose Rajubhai to come and serve at our Mandir. Shastriji arrived in the UK for the first time on 15 June 2015. He will be with us for two years. He had a short handover period working with and receiving training from Bharatbhai Shastriji and very quickly he took charge of running the Mandir. He is looking after the Bhagwans (Deities) on a full-time basis. Ensuring that the Deities are all well looked after is not an easy task and Shastriji is kept busy from 8 a.m. till 1p.m. and then again from 5pm until the temple closes at 8 p.m. in winter and 9 p.m. in summer. He conducts Aartis three times a day at 10 a.m., noon, and 7 p.m. and on special ceremonies as required. He conducts pujas, other religious ceremonies too, including weddings. Rajubhai Shastriji requests all members and devotees to come to the temple for Darshan of the beautiful Bhagwans and to take active part in religious events and give Seva. Shastriji also teaches the basis aspects of our religion on Saturday mornings to the children attending Gujarati classes. Also he will be teaching Hindi to one student. The people of Crawley warmly welcome Shastriji and look forward to learning more from his very vast and deep knowledge of the Hindu scriptures and culture. We are also excited that we will enjoy the many festivals throughout the year in his company. Shastriji is available to conduct Hindu religious ceremonies, such as Satyanaryan Katha, yagna and havan, between 1-5pm. For further information, please contact: Rajubhai Shastriji : 01293 530105 Mobile : 07459 208505 14

Why I chose Sakha? By Pavni Acharya, (age 11) Swayam Sevika (volunteer) Namaste, Ever since I started Sakha almost two years ago I have learnt and developed my knowledge so much. This experience has changed my life and I’d like to take a moment to tell you how: When I joined, I was very insecure and lacked confidence in almost all areas. Through this journey I have learnt so much, like the significance of the story of Kali Naag, where Krishna takes on a mighty snake (a bully figure) and does not cow down and eventually wins the fight. This gives all his friends strength to resist and stop a bully in the future. The one key theme about sakha is that you are never alone, we are a team, even more so we are a family and there are always people who can help and who have been through what you’re going through. There is much, much to learn! Personally, I am not very sporty and energetic and do not like getting up and moving around. But over time, I have built up a good stamina in a fun environment through all the khels that we play. I must add, it’s not easy at times but it never stops me from coming owing to all the fun I am having. On the rare occasion we do get slightly hurt the Shikshaks (mentors) and the other older swayam sevaks / sevikas are always there, and I mean always on hand. To summarise, here are my key lessons:
18
•
Sakha has made a difference to my life, Just as much as I have helped to make it my own
•
It’s about being a better human, Strong, clever and committed
•
Shaka isn’t I or Me, It’s US and WE
•
If we want to change something, WE have to change first!
•
Big or small, We can all make a difference. Sanatan Darshan | July - August - September 2015
