Welcome

by Ashwin Soni, GHU Ambassador

Dear Members, Friends, Well-wishers Namasta, Jai Shree Krishna, Jai Sia Ram

-

Here is a short report from the Ambassadors. The Ambassadors are Piyooshbhai Chotai,

Finally a word about fund raising. We have made good progress in paying our debt. We still have outstanding loan of £1.2 million with the Bank. Working with the Committee we have jointly developed an ambitious plan to raise funds over the next 12 months. Please do come forward and support the following three fund raising activities:-

Kirtikumar Patel, Illeshbhai Patel, Umesh Nayee and myself. The role of the Ambassadors is to help and support GHU Committee. We also guide and check that the Committee is taking good care of the Community and Centre. We hold monthly meetings with the Committee where we review short, medium and long term plans in area. This year we have focused on implementing New Committee structure with the President, Secretary and Treasurer. In our view this is working much better than the previous structure we had in GHU. Secondly we have focussed on Treasury. We helped to set fund raising targets in the key areas, namely Religious, Hall Hire, Social and others. We track all the income and expenditure on a monthly basis in order to identify any cost saving and/or improvement opportunities. We are pleased to report that planned activates and income streams are in good order and in some cases exceeding expectations. We have also focused on claiming Gift Aid in a timely manner. This work is ongoing and we hope to complete it in the next two months.

• SPONSOR A DAY • INTEREST FREE LOAN • EVENTS – RELIGIOUS, SOCIAL AND FROM NEXT YEAR SPORTS The Ambassadors have pledged to help, support and guide GHU. We really need others to join in to make our Centre and Sansta successful and prosperous.

Ashwin Soni October 2016

The Committee has continued to work hard to provide excellent service and support to the Community. The Committee desperately needs need members to come on board. Please do come forward to support your Community, your Sansta. 2

My journey with GHU by Bharat Lukka , Chairman Jai Shree Krishna

Jai Sia Ram

Jai Jalaram

£1.4 million that we have borrowed.

I initially joined the Gurjar Hindu Union (GHU) as a volunteer to help with basic social and religious needs. As time progressed, I decided to reciprocate to an organisation that made me a lot of the character I am today. By creating awareness and thus raising the profile of GHU we are now recognised across the country for the community spirit which has built our prestigious Apple Tree Centre.

My personal journey is of course not over, I have set myself some targets and expect to fulfil these in the coming years. The substance of my targets include a plan to focus on bringing back old and introducing new faces into the GHU, in doing so creating new fundraising initiatives, in turn maintaining the current upward trajectory that we are all so proud of.

I have achieved a great deal in my 33 year journey with GHU and owe a lot to the community, and during this time I have also made a lot of great friends. So it is with great reflection and pride that I sit down to write this report as the year finally comes to an end.

My sincere thanks also go to my family for supporting and sticking by me in achieving my vision to support the Sanatan Mandir and Apple Tree Community Centre.

The successes as well as failures over the last few years have all proved to be worth it as the vision is now coming to a total reality. It is the core governors, committee members and the dedicated community who have encouraged us of our cultural beliefs and aspirations. During the last year we have staged a variety of different events with focus on fundraising for the religious and social running of The Centre. As an organisation we are very grateful for all the support and help that our volunteers/members of the public have given us for every one of these events. Today, this community is a highly respected addition to the local population; fully integrated with local people. The Gurjar Hindu Union and the Hindu community of Crawley have the motto and vision of improving the quality of life through the cultural values of its members. This new Apple Tree Centre has become a part of the forthcoming generation and my prayers to you are to support us wholeheartedly with this project as we must and will repay the loan of

Life is a challenge

Meet it.

Life is a journey

Complete it.

Life is a goal

let’s achieve it together.

Finally, let’s encourage new members to join our community and let’s make a point to visit our centre at least once a week! Thank you to the committee, governors, ambassadors & the public for supporting me. Happy Diwali & a prosperous new year to you all Jai Jalaram Bharat Lukka President , Director/Governor Marketing Digital Media & Events

Education Training GUJARATI SCHOOL Classes are very successful with parent who have shown interest to teach their children Gujarati. For the Gujarati School our vision is that the teaching and outcomes should be of same comparable standard with that of mainstream school. The Gujarati teaching should support pupils to maintain their language skills, increase their Hindu cultural heritage and develop their distinct identity as members of wider community. GHU Gujarati School is part of Crawley Community Teachers are Kokilaben Patel, Binitaben Kataria, Jagrutiben . Anjnaben Parekh. Kokilaben attended 10-week course to improve their teaching skills.

I would like to congratulate all Students on behalf of our sanstha. I am very grateful to parents for encouraging your children to take up Gujarati, our mother tongue, as a mainstream subject. •

Music Classes - Classes are run by our volunteer teacher Jagdisbhai who would like to see more more children and adults taking part. Students showcase their skills at our Diwali show.

Crawley Arya Shakha At Crawley Arya Shakha (part of HSS UK) we focus on children aged 6 – 25yrs old on character building, physical fitness, training for soft skills like team work, leadership and confidence building leading to personality development, always with Hindu ethos and cultural values as the backdrop. We started life on 7th July 2013 and slowly we have built a committed Hindu community of 25+ strong, confident and proud young Hindus. This milestone has been achieved through weekly 1hr 15minutes of fun filled sessions every Sunday morning at 11am where we play games, sing and learn about our culture together! It is fascinating to for us as Shikshaks (teachers) to see these kids develop and blossom into the next

generation of diligent human being rather than being stuck to their gaming consoles. smart phones or tablets. This is big achievement of our small attempt at bringing these young minds closer to the their own Hindu roots. HSS UK is 50 years old voluntary, non-profit, social & cultural organisation. HSS UK promotes diversity and unity. It works on ethos of Hinduism- universal acceptance and tolerance. More than 2000 people of age range 3 to 85 years come together on the weekly basis in more than 110 places in the UK. 50 years of contribution of HSS UK is based on its three principles: Sanskar (virtues, ethos and moral values), Sewa (Selfless Service) & Sanghatan (Unity).
