DESI MAKING WAVES Today, Salim and Sulaiman Merchant are among India's most respected composers, having scored more than 100 films including Kurbaan, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Fashion, Band Baaja Baaraat, Aaja Nachle, Heroine, etc., around 20 TV shows and composed several records incorporating cinematic, folk, electronica and Sufi Influences to their music. They've composed for musicals such as 'Merchants of Bollywood' and 'Beyond Bollywood'. Their latest & much awaited Hollywood film 'Sold' is already gaining a lot of appreciation at various film festivals.

NORTH AMERICA TOUR 2015 - LIVE CONCERTS - #SSLIVE2015 The duo have enthralled audiences across the world with their live concerts including performing at the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup 2010. Their songs have been very inspirational especially their sports anthem 'Chak De India'. They have really redefined the music scene in India.

Salim and Sulaiman have been part of several TV reality shows as celebrity judges including the very popular Indian Idol. They've got the Best Music award for the film 'Fashion' at New York's Syracuse International Film. Festival, Filmfare, Zee Cine, IIFA, Screen & several other awards. They were also nominated for a daytime Emmy Award for composing 'Save the Tiger-Wonder Pets' and continue to spread their love all over the world including their latest collaboration with Lady Gaga Born This Way and Enrique Iglesias - I'm a Freak.

The music duo always make sure to create songs with a classical touch, be it "Rasiya" for the film "Kurbaan" or "Aayo ji" in "Satyagraha". However, Salim rues that these "songs are not promoted like item songs". "For that we have to fight against the system (in filmdom), but Indian cinema is very passionate about promoting our culture and our country," he said,

For Salim Merchant of music composer duo Salim Sulaiman, hip-hop and EDM (electronic dance music) genres are mainly heard in metro cities, but in places like Ghaziabad, Jaipur, Rourkela, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar and other small cities, they prefer more 'desi' tunes. "They love our own Indian music, whether it's Bollywood or classical. They are more used to it. I don't feel that Indian classic can ever deplete from the music industry. The problem is that most Indian filmmakers and record labels are not trying to promote music, which is made classically," said Salim Merchant. 14

adding that "the Indian music industry is being ruled by a couple of...music labels". Without taking any names, he added: "They are not giving people a choice listen to other genres. They are promoting a stereotypical kind of music, which is working. But that is unfortunate, because whatever people listen on the radio and channels is actually directed by them." In times when crass lyrics and innuendos are ruling the roost in Bollywood's music scene, Salim Merchant, who has composed numerous songs for films like "Fashion" and "Dor" with his brother Sulaiman, says he never wants to compose a number which he won't be able to explain to his little girl. The father of a nine-year-old girl doesn’t want to compose a song that involves usage of words meant for adults only. “I don’t make songs like ‘Shake your bootiya’. I have a little daughter and if she asks me what is the meaning of the word. I am very careful of what I make,” says Salim Merchant. He is keen on working on a kids film. “We are not working on a kids film at the moment. But if it comes along, why not? We had done ‘Iqbal’, which was about a kid who joins the Indian cricket team,” he said. The brand ambassador of i-genius Young Singing Stars, Salim likes to see young talent grow. “It’s always enduring to see young talent. It brings a smile on face. They are the future of our country. You need to encourage younger talent. That’s the only way to make society a better place,” said Salim Merchant. He will be soon going on a US tour with his brother and will provide an opportunity to budding singers too. “We have lot of fans in Canada and US. The concerts are happening. We will be opening out stage to young talent. We will look out for new talent and give opportunity to people if they have talent. We will give them a chance to sing a song with us,” he said.

THE FOODIE Chefs are dishing out a whole range of yogurt-based desserts for the health conscious, and many are pleasantly surprised by how smooth and light they are on the palate. Sure, it’s different, but it does have a semblance of being a cheesecake, and it’s also a tasty dessert in its own right.

When the famous sweet makers of Bengal first concocted their clay pot misthi doi (sweet yogurt), they never imagined that one day it would end up in a cheesecake. But pastry chef Savio Fernandes of JW Marriott, Mumbai, has done just that in an east-meets-west spin to produce a cheesecake that’s much lighter than the original, but no less tasty. He calls it the... well, you guessed it, the Mishti Doi Cheesecake.

A dessert in its own right But using yogurt does come with a few challenges. Unlike cream or milk, which are fairly standard in taste and texture, yogurt can be finicky: You can use the exact same process to make it, but the taste will vary from day to day. So you have to think on your feet, adjusting constantly for sourness, consistency and texture. The margin of error is smaller, and a little slip can result in your dessert making people wince, instead of smacking their lips.

Health benefits aren’t the only draw of yogurt based desserts. Though chefs began by experimenting with yogurt, the resulting desserts now have a distinct character, and can stand their own even in terms of taste. This is a happy result for foodies. The health benefits are simply the icing on the cake. INGREDIENTS: −1lt milk −200g condensed milk −200g cream cheese −50g curd starter −2gm cardamom powder For topping −200g mascarpone cheese −200g whipped cream PREPARATION −Boil the milk & reduce it to 600g. Add in the condensed milk and cardamom powder, allow it to cool slightly. −Add in the cream cheese, stir & ensure that the cheese is well mixed into the milk mix. −Add in the curd starter and put the contents into the earthen pots. Allow it to set for a couple of hours and then chill it in a refrigerator −For the topping fold in whipped cream into the lightly creamed cheese and top the pot of the mishti dhoi, serve chilled. Recipe courtesy: Savio Fernandes

Lowering cholesterol levels Fernandes of Marriott even makes a mousse called the Yogurt Log, a yogurt-based mango mousse, which avoids the egg yolks, milk and sugar or chilled fruit soups are a rage in Hong Kong, giving no fats or saturated fats. 24

New York (IANS) Partners who become romantically involved soon after meeting tend to be more similar in physical attractiveness than friends-first couples or partners who get together after knowing each other for a while, says a study. For example, the pairing of an unattractive woman with an attractive man is more likely to emerge if the partners had known one another for many months prior to dating. Partners who began dating within a month of first meeting each other showed a strong correlation for physical attractiveness, said the study published in the journal Psychological Science. "This study shows that we make different sorts of decisions about whom to marry depending upon whether we knew the person before we started dating," said coauthor of the study Eli Finkel, professor of psychology at Northwestern University. "If we start dating soon after we meet, physical attractiveness appears to be a major factor in determining such decisions, and we end up with somebody who's about as attractive as we are, 32

DESI EXPRESS MAGAZINE

If, in contrast, we know the person for a while before we start dating or if we are friends first physical attractiveness appears to be much less important, and we are less likely to be similar to our spouse on the dimension of looks," says Finkel. The researchers looked at data collected from 167 couples, 67 dating and 100 married, who were participating in a longitudinal study of romantic relationships. The couples had been together for as few as three months and as long as 53 years, with an average relationship length of eight years and eight months. The results revealed that the longer the romantic partners had known each other before dating, the less likely they were to be matched on attractiveness. But the correlation was much lower for partners who had known each other for a long time before dating. A similar pattern emerged when looked at whether pairs were friends before they started dating; friends-first couples were less likely to be matched on attractiveness than couples who were strangers before dating. MONEYWISE

More than 52 percent of businesses today are home-based. Every day, people are striking out and achieving economic and creative independence by turning their skills into dollars. Garages, basements, and attics are being transformed into the corporate headquarters of the newest entrepreneurs home-based businesspeople. And, with technological advances in smart phones, tablets, and iPads as well as a rising demand for "service-oriented" businesses, the opportunities seem to be endless.

Is a Home-Based Business Right for You? Choosing a home business is like choosing a spouse or partner: Think carefully before starting the business. Instead of plunging right in, take the time to learn as much about the market for any product or service as you can. Before you invest any time, effort, or money take a few moments to answer the following questions: ∗ Can you describe the business you plan on establishing? ∗ What will be your product or service? ∗ Is there a demand for your product or service? ∗ Can you identify the target market for your business? ∗ Do you have the expertise needed to compete? Before you dive head first into a home-based business, it's essential that you know why you are doing it and how you will do it. To succeed, your business must be based on something greater than a desire to be your own boss, and involves an honest assessment of your own personality, an understanding of what's involved, and a lot of hard work. You have to be willing to plan ahead and make improvements and adjustments along the way. While there are no "best" or "right" reasons for starting a homebased business, it is vital to have a very clear idea of what you are getting into and why. Ask yourself these questions: ∗ Are you a self-starter? ∗ Can you stick to business if you're working at home? ∗ Do you have the necessary self-discipline to maintain schedules? ∗ Can you deal with the isolation of working from home? Working under the same roof that your family lives under may not prove to be as easy as it seems. It is important that you work in a professional environment. If at all possible, you should set up a separate office in your home. You must consider whether your home has space for a business and whether you can successfully run the business from your home.

Compliance with Laws and Regulations A home-based business is subject to many of the same laws and regulations affecting other businesses and you will be responsible for complying with them. There are some general areas to watch out for, but be sure to consult an attorney and your state department of labor to find out which laws and regulations will affect your business. Zoning: Be aware of your city's zoning regulations. If your AFZAL MITHWANI CPA, EA, PFS (P) 770-817-7000 (Q) 770-817-7001 afzal@univisioncpa.com

business operates in violation of them, you could be fined or closed.

Restrictions on Certain Goods: Certain products may not be produced in the home. Most states outlaw home production of fireworks, drugs, poisons, sanitary or medical products, and toys. Some states also prohibit home-based businesses from making food, drink, or clothing.

Registration and Accounting Requirements: You may need the following: ∗ Work certificate or a license from the state (your business's name may also need to be registered with the state) ∗ Sales tax number ∗ Separate business telephone ∗ Separate business bank account If your business has employees, you are responsible for withholding income, social security, and Medicare taxes, as well as complying with minimum wage and employee health and safety laws. Planning Techniques Money fuels all businesses. With a little planning, you'll find that you can avoid most financial difficulties. When drawing up a financial plan, don't worry about using estimates. The process of thinking through these questions helps develop your business skills and leads to solid financial planning.

Estimating Start-Up Costs: To estimate your start-up costs include all initial expenses such as fees, licenses, permits, telephone deposit, tools, office equipment and promotional expenses. In addition, business experts say you should not expect a profit for the first eight to ten months, so be sure to give yourself enough of a cushion if you need it.

Projecting Operating Expenses: Include salaries, utilities, office supplies, loan payments, taxes, legal services and insurance premiums, and don't forget to include your normal living expenses. Your business must not only meet its own needs, but make sure it meets yours as well. Projecting Income: It is essential that you know how to

estimate your sales on a daily and monthly basis. From the sales estimates, you can develop projected income statements, break-even points, and cash-flow statements. Use your marketing research to estimate initial sales volume.

Determining Cash Flow: Working capital not profits pays your bills. Even though your assets may look great on the balance sheet, if your cash is tied up in receivables or equipment, your business is technically insolvent. In other words, you're broke. Make a list of all anticipated expenses and projected income for each week and month. If you see a cash-flow crisis developing, cut back on everything but the necessities.

CHAI LOUNGE NRIS CAN INVEST IN NATIONAL PENSION SYSTEM : PFRDA NEW DELHI: Non-resident Indians (NRIs) can invest in National Pension System (NPS) to get a social security cover, pension regulator PFRDA's chairman Hemant Contractor said on Wednesday. While RBI has communicated to PFRDA about NRIs being eligible to make such investments, the government will shortly come out with a clarification on Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) guidelines to facilitate non-resident Indians to invest in National Pension System (NPS), he said. "There was some ambiguity about whether to add NPS as eligible investment by NRI. So, we took up the matter with RBI and very recently they have given this clarification that NPS like insurance and mutual fund could also be eligible investment for NRIs," Contractor said at an event organised by PFRDA here. "...the government will shortly be coming out with clarification to that effect in the FEMA guidelines" he said. Highlighting the importance of NPS scheme for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), he said such residents especially living in the Middle-East are not having any mandatory social security benefit. This window would provide NRIs to save money for their old age, he said adding that they would also enjoy the tax break as prescribed. The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) is in talks with lenders such as SBI, HDFC Bank, Canara Bank, Indian Bank and several other south India-based banks to tap potential of NRIs. "We have started talking to bankers about attracting NRIs to enroll for NPS scheme. We see NRIs as very attractive market for NPS. We would like to push for NPS for the NRIs," he said. The move will also help to increase the subscriber base and expand the pension corpus in the private sector. The current corpus under the National Pension System is Rs 91,000 crore.

WHAT’S YOUR RASHI? Aries – March 21 through April 20 You are still interested in having fun, vacationing, spending time with loved ones, and losing yourself within your favorite hobbies, but you are also beginning to change your focus towards your career, health, and/or productivity related goals. There is a good chance that you are becoming aware of the tug-of-war we all face when trying to balance our mental health with our desire to burn both ends of the candle. Start looking for ways to create balance between your desire to be highly productive and emotional well-being. Taurus: April 21 to May 20. This month has you focused on your home life, your playtime activities, your partnerships, and your social life. You are juggling so many different people’s wants, needs, and attitudes. There is a lovely bit of joyful energy in your playtime sector promoting taking about a week off and running away from it all. Then at the end of the month, you have some really lovely energy in your home life that allows you to “fix” whatever it is that had people upset earlier. Gemini: May 21 to June 20. You are still taking your professional life quite seriously and you have some good things happening there. But it is beginning to cause some trouble at home. You need to make sure that you are not allowing your boss to push you to the point that you are not able to devote enough time and energy to your private life. You still have some excellent communications and negotiation skills, so that should help you to smooth things over. Cancer: June 21 to July 22. You have a lot of positive energy pushing you towards financial, commercial, and/or professional successes. You still have some issues with not wanting to overspend on luxuries and playtime activities, but you are still finding ways to have a good time. There is a bit of a battle concerning political, religious, legal, cultural, academic, media, travel, and/or relocating to another city. You are very tempted to give up or to surrender to the will of the experts. This argument or issue is not over yet, so do not be too easily persuaded to simply give in to what authority figures are telling you is correct. You may want to chew on things for a while and argue your case next month. Leo: July 23 to August 22. You have some financial debates occurring this month but the good news is that the planet of good luck and prosperity has entered your personal wealth sector, so you are probably not going to worry about it too much. You are able to make some smart budgetary decisions and to begin funneling some of that money into your home and private life. This is not a winning lottery ticket or big inheritance; it is money that you earned fair and square. Libra: September 23 to October 22. Your social life is booming with great energy but your financial dealings should not intertwine with these groups at this time. You are also entering a time when you are feeling a strong tug-of-war between your emotional and physical well-being, between logic and spirituality, between bureaucracies and productivity, etc. The area of your chart in charge of logical detail work and the part in charge of hidden mysteries of life are beginning to clash. Rather than taking on an either/or attitude, you should strive for balance between the known and unknown. * All astrological predictions are to be considered friendly advice based on the author’s personal opinions and used for entertainment purposes only. These are not to be considered as promises, guarantees, or psychic predictions. They are simply potentials to be used at the reader’s own discretion. For important decisions, consult your personal intuition, doctor, accountant, lawyer, educator, or clergy as needed. It is best to be informed on all levels.

AUGUST 2015 Scorpio: October 23 to November 22. You have had a lot of time over the first half of this year to shine professionally. Now you are reevaluating your professional progress so far and you seem irritated by what you are seeing. Maybe you have not made enough progress or maybe you are unhappy with the leadership role you are in. Regardless of whatever changes you decide to make, you are successfully able to launch new professional goals and to begin a new chapter in that area of your life. Your social life is bursting with all kinds of positive energy and it seems to be putting a damper on your love life, parenting obligations, or hobbies. You will need to keep an eye on that so as not to lose anything that truly matters. Sagittarius : November 23 to December 21. The planet of good luck, joy, adventure, abundance, and prosperity moves into the area of your chart that governs your professional goals, leadership style, and public reputation. You are naturally changing your focus from fun, playtime, and exploration towards your professional life and leadership roles. You are in a good mood and looking forward to what the future could bring. At times, you will be struggling to balance your private life and your public life, but for the most part, you are having such a good time working on your career, that it will be easy to pick sides. Just follow your instincts as far as things are going at home and try not to drop the ball in that area. Capricorn – December 22 through January 20. You are beginning to feel a restlessness; a need to travel, explore, learn something new, experience some kind of an adventure. But you are also in a very romantic and financially savvy frame of mind. You are not being asked to choose between the two, so you should be able to enjoy both. You will probably notice a vague sense of opposition to your efforts to travel and give into the urge to explore and learn new things. It could simply be that others do not understand what you are trying to do, they may not want you to go, or they could be using illogical arguments to try to change your mind about your newfound knowledge. Aquarius: January 20 to February 20. Your partner is upset about your level of success, professional path, reputation, choice of careers, boss, father, a high profile client, or an authority figure. It is also possible that your boss or father figure does not like your choice of partners. If your partnerships are all doing okay, then you might find that a competitor is willing to smear your good name in order to win a battle against you. Eventually, things calm down in this area and you begin debating financial aspects of your life. You could be torn between collecting a regular dependable but modest salary and taking a chance on an irregular but possibly much bigger commission check. Pisces – February 19 through March 20 Neptune is your ruling planet and he has been in Pisces for a couple of years now. On good days, he makes you come across as spiritual, compassionate, romantic, and idealistic. On bad days, he makes you seem passive-aggressive, delusional, self-destructive, and/or flaky. This month, a partner or rival decides that you need to hear their opinion of how you are presenting yourself. They are pretty harsh and judgmental. You decide to stop doing some outwardly behavior, but it is not clear that it is because you agree with them. You could very well decide to quit listening to whatever they are saying. Regardless, there is an opportunity for a bit of self-reflection just to make sure that you are living up to your own standards, morals, and ethics.

Virgo: August 23 to September 22. It is such a weird month for you. You are in a huge disagreement with a partner or rival and it causes some kind of major ending within that relationship. It does not have to be a break up, but it could be a “giving up”. Or maybe they just flee the situation. You are also dealing with bureaucratic issues or some kind of dysfunction within your extended family or local community. You are constantly being drug into the mess when you would rather not be. And yet you have excellent communication skills and sense of optimism, playfulness, and open-mindedness throughout all this drama. It is as if they just cannot drag you down no matter what they throw at you.
