Smithsonian explores America's immigration story through "H-1B"

Washington (IANS) In a spin-off from the Smithsonian's "Beyond Bollywood" exhibition, 17 South Asian American and Asian-American artists explore America's immigration story in a new digital exhibition simply titled "H-1B". Inspired by the employment visa coveted by Indian techies, the artists comment on their immigration journeys depicting the range of emotions-anxiety, dignity, isolation and opportunity-associated

with living in America. Approximately one-third of H-1B visas that permit foreigners highly skilled in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to work in the US on a temporary basis, annually are issued to South Asian workers "Our H-1B Visa exhibition explores a historic part of the American story from the perspective of South Asian Indians," said Konrad Ng, director of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Centre. The H-1B program has recently come under fire because the demand for H-1B visas has exceeded the 65,000 cap every year since 2003, this year getting 233,000 applications in less than a week. She served in the Peace Corps nearly 20 years ago and spent time in Senegal. She is survived by her son, parents and brother. Datar’s family released a statement that said in part: “We are devastated that Anita is gone.

It’s unbelievable to us that she has been killed in this senseless act of violence and terrorism. Anita was one of the kindest and most generous people we know. “She loved her family and her work tremendously. Everything she did in her life she did to help other — as a mother, public health expert, daughter, sister and friend. “And while we are angry and saddened that she has been killed, we know that she would want to promote education and healthcare to prevent violence and poverty at home and abroad, not intolerance.” — By Arun Kumar

US lawmakers celebrate Diwali on Capitol Hill to celebrate the accomplishments of the Indian American Diaspora.

HEALTH CARE LAW FOR INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES - EXEMPTION AMOUNTS FOR 2015

Diwali is celebrated by nearly a billion people around the world and more than two million people in the US, a media release from Bera's office noted.

If you haven't signed up for health insurance this year, do so now and avoid or reduce any penalty you might be subject to. Depending on your income, you may be able to claim the premium tax credit that reduces your premium payment or reduce your tax obligations, as long as you meet certain requirements. You can choose to get the credit immediately or receive it as a refund when you file your taxes.

Additional Medicare Tax: Taxpayers whose income exceeds certain threshold amounts ($200,000 single filers and $250,000 married filing jointly) are liable for an additional Medicare tax of 0.9 percent on their tax returns, but may request that their employers withhold additional income tax from their pay to be applied against their tax liability when filing their 2015 tax return next April. High net worth individuals should consider contributing to Roth IRAs and 401(k) because distributions are not subject to the Medicare Tax. If you're a taxpayer close to the threshold for the Medicare Tax, it might make sense to switch Roth retirement contributions to a traditional IRA plan, thereby avoiding the 3.8 percent Net Investment Income Tax as well (more about the NIIT below). Alternate Minimum Tax: The Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) exemption "patch" was made permanent by the American Taxpayer Relief Act (ATRA) of 2012 and is indexed for inflation. It's important not to overlook the effect of any year-end planning moves on the AMT for 2015 and 2016. Items that may affect AMT include deductions for state property taxes and state income taxes, miscellaneous itemized deductions, and personal exemptions. Please call if you're not sure whether AMT applies to you. Note: AMT exemption amounts for 2015 are as follows:  $53,600 for single and head of household filers,  $83,400 for married people filing jointly and for qualifying widows or widowers,

Washington (IANS) More than 30 members of US Congress joined about 1,000 people at the annual Diwali event on Capitol Hill, the seat of US legislature, to celebrate the accomplishments of the Indian American Diaspora.

It provides an opportunity to meet with members of Congress and other elected officials to celebrate the contributions of the South Asian community in business, technology, health care, arts, academics, and much more.

The annual celebration, which attracts people and Indian American organizations from all over the US, was organized by Ami Bera and George Holding, Democratic and Republican co-chairs of the Caucus on India and Indian Americans.

Attendees at the event in the Great Hall of the Library of Congress, included Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, both Democrats, and the Republican Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Ed Royce.

Year-End Tax Planning for Individuals Tax planning for the year ahead presents similar challenges to last year due to the unknown fate of the numerous tax extenders that expired at the end of 2014. Tax planning for the year ahead presents similar challenges to last year due to the unknown fate of the numerous tax extenders that expired at the end of 2014. These tax extenders, which include the mortgage insurance premium deduction and the sales tax deduction that allows taxpayers to deduct state and local general sales taxes instead of state and local income taxes, may or may not be reauthorized by Congress and made retroactive to the beginning of year. In the meantime, let's take a look at some of the tax strategies that you can use right now, given the current tax situation. Tax planning strategies for individuals this year include postponing income and accelerating deductions, as well as careful consideration of timing related investments, charitable gifts, and retirement planning. General tax planning strategies that taxpayers might consider, include the following:



Sell any investments on which you have a gain or loss this year. See Investment Gains and Losses, below.



If you anticipate an increase in taxable income in 2016 and are expecting a bonus at year-end, try to get it before December 31. Keep in mind, however, that contractual bonuses are different, in that they are typically not paid out until the first quarter of the following year. Therefore, any taxes owed on a contractual bonus would not be due until you file a tax return for tax year 2016.



Prepay deductible expenses such as charitable contributions and medical expenses this year using a credit card. This strategy works because deductions may be taken based on when the expense was charged on the credit card, not when the bill was paid.



For eg, if you charge a medical expense in December but pay the bill in January, assuming it's an eligible medical expense, it can be taken as a deduction on return.



If your company grants stock options, you may want to exercise the option or sell stock acquired by exercise of an option this year if you think your tax bracket will be higher in 2016. Exercise of the option is often but not always a taxable event; sale of the stock is almost always a taxable event.



If you're self-employed, send invoices or bills to clients or customers this year to be paid in full by the end of Dec.

  

Caution: Keep an eye on the estimated tax requirements. Accelerating Income and Deductions

Accelerating income into 2015 is an especially good idea for taxpayers who anticipate being in a higher tax bracket next year or whose earnings are close to threshold amounts ($200,000 for single filers and $250,000 for married filing jointly) that make them liable for additional Medicare Tax or Net Investment Income Tax (see below). In cases where tax benefits are phased out over a certain adjusted gross income (AGI) amount, a strategy of accelerating income and deductions might allow you to claim larger deductions, credits, and other tax breaks for 2015, depending on your situation. The latter benefits include Roth IRA contributions, conversions of regular IRAs to Roth IRAs, child credits, higher education tax credits and deductions for student loan interest. Caution: Taxpayers close to threshold amounts for the Net AFZAL MITHWANI CPA, EA, PFS (P) 770-817-7000 (Q) 770-817-7001 afzal@univisioncpa.com

Investment Income Tax (3.8 percent of net investment income) should pay close attention to "one-time" income spikes such as those associated with Roth conversions, sale of a home or other large assets that may be subject to tax. Tip: If you know you have a set amount of income coming in this year that is not covered by withholding taxes, increasing your withholding before year-end can avoid or reduce any estimated tax penalty that might otherwise be due. Tip: On the other hand, the penalty could be avoided by covering the extra tax in your final estimated tax payment and computing the penalty using the annualized income method. Here are several examples of what a taxpayer might do to accelerate deductions:



Pay a state estimated tax installment in December instead of at the January due date. However, make sure the payment is based on a reasonable estimate of your state tax.



Pay your entire property tax bill, including installments due in year 2016. This does not apply to mortgage escrow Account.



It may be beneficial to pay 2016 tuition in 2015 to take full



advantage of the American Opportunity Tax Credit, an above the line deduction worth up to $2,500 per student to cover the cost of tuition, fees and course materials paid during the taxable year. Forty percent of the credit (up to $1,000) is refundable, which means you can get it even if you owe no tax.



Try to bunch "threshold" expenses, such as medical and dental expenses--10 percent of AGI (adjusted gross income) starting in 2013--and miscellaneous itemized deductions. For example, you might pay medical bills and dues and subscriptions in whichever year they would do you the most tax good.



Note: There is a temporary exemption of 7.5 percent through December 31, 2016 for individuals age 65 and older and their spouses.



Threshold expenses are deductible only to the extent they exceed a certain percentage of adjusted gross income (AGI). By bunching these expenses into one year, rather than spreading them out over two years, you have a better chance of exceeding the thresholds, thereby maximizing your deduction.

The Traveler UAE's Ajman Palace Where halal friendly is the USP New Delhi (IANS) At a time when writers, filmmakers and historians have revolted against a rising culture of intolerance towards freedom of speech, Indian cinematic icon Amitabh Bachchan, widely followed celebrity on social media, says he's always cautious about expressing himself to avoid "unwanted controversy". Is he reluctant about sharing his views freely? "That's a discretion I will exercise because there is a certain vulnerability with celebrities, We (celebrities) are vulnerable to almost everything. There are times when something we may have spoken could have created a controversy. So, there is a certain amount of cautiousness that I exercise, but there are actors and filmmakers who share their thoughts on socio-political matters without a second thought. God bless them," exclaimed the thespian, adding that he finds such people "very brave, honest, frank and strong". "I exercise a lot of restraint in expressing myself on various issues... I don't want to create unnecessary controversy," said Amitabh. He also said that if he is ever forced into commenting on something, "I will perhaps not be able to give an adequate reply, or I will excuse myself from it because either I don't have the right answers or I don't wish to make comments on it." His adeptness with technology has improved over the years and, unlike many his age, he has embraced it beautifully, even though he admitted that he's not totally comfortable with it. "My kids and grandchildren help me with these modern inventions. Sometimes when I don't know how to work on a mobile or a laptop or an iPad, they are very conversant to that, so I seek their help." He feels the onus to introduce "older generations, grandparents and at many times parents who are not conversant with technology -" lies on the youngsters. Recounting one incident when he introduced his celebrated father to a mobile phone, he shared: “I remember the first time when I took a mobile phone to my father, he had actually backed away from it... like there was some kind of danger involved here. "But gradually once they get used to it, they understand." The findings appeared in the Journal of Family Psychology.

Ajman (UAE) (IANS) This is one 'dry' place where guests are crowding to enjoy a unique concept in hospitality. Tucked away in the UAE's emirate of Ajman, the Ajman Palace Hotel takes pride in its halal-friendly tag. Located on the beach-front that gives an endless view of the Persian Gulf. "We wanted to establish the property as a unique one. It is alcohol-free and focused on family guests. We have worked very hard on making this concept (halal friendly) popular and our guests have given us a very encouraging response," hotel general manager Ferghall Purcell, who hosted the G8 leaders when he headed the Lough Erne Resort in Northern Ireland in June 2013. The absence of liquor in a 5-star property may be seen as a hindrance by many, but this is "not an issue at all" for the Ajman Palace management. The high point of the hotel is that it has become a much sought-after venue for all-women's parties during weddings due to its 'halal friendly' concept. "We have the largest hotel ballroom in the northern Emirates. We are a hit for weddings and big conferences. I love wearing dresses as nothing can flatter a woman’s body more than a dress that fits well. Stock a couple of formal and casual dresses and make sure they accentuate your body well. A black jacket is a must in a closet. They go really well with formal wear and during travel too. A well-fitted pair of denims is a must. I would say dark blue and black denims are safe for all events. What’s a woman’s closet without several pairs of shoes? Pick a couple of formal as well as casual shoes that go well with most of your outfits. Even flats and flip-flops work really well when you are sporting casuals. I have a fetish for bags and have a huge collection of them. I prefer getting them from well-known brands as they are available in varied colors and designs. When it comes to accessories, it is important to stock a collection of earrings, neckpieces, rings and anklets. Choose according to your taste and match it well with your outfit. Make-up plays a crucial role in assessing your overall look. However, too much make-up spoils your overall look and it’s important to keep it subtle. A nice lip gloss, mascara, eye-liner and kohl are must carries in your bag.

Wedding NAIL THE BRIDAL LOOK THIS SEASON New Delhi, (IANS) Every girl hopes to look her best on her D-day, but some, in this pursuit, go overboard with either their make-up or the color of their dress. To make sure you get your bridal look right, it's vital to keep some points in your mind. Sushma Khan, head of make-up, Lakme Salon Bridal Dream Team, shares how to look gorgeous on your wedding day: 

Choose the right color lehenga to complement your skin tone: The key to selecting the right colored lehenga is to not be a victim of trends. Opt for what suits your skin tone better. Red works better for dusky and wheatish complexions. Pink looks good on women with fair skin tone.

If you like to experiment with different colors for contact lens, buy a couple of pairs in colors of your choice. However, I would recommend hazel colored lens as they go well with Indian faces. A lot of fashion faux pas are done by almost everybody. Nevertheless, it’s those fashion faux pas that helps you to grow in fashion. Personally, it has helped me to learn from mistakes and I am more careful now when it comes to dressing up.



Lastly, keep it simple yet stylish as that’s the key to looking fashionable. Don’t mix too many colors or wear too many accessories. Simplicity always puts you on the limelight.

a while, says a study. For example, the pairing of an unattractive woman with an attractive man is more likely to emerge if the partners had known one another for many months prior to dating. Partners who began dating within a month meeting each other showed a strong correlation for physical attractiveness, said the study published in journal Psychological Science. "This study shows that we make different sorts of decisions about whom to marry depending upon whether we knew the person before we started dating," said co-author of the study Eli Finkel, professor of psychology at Northwestern University.

"If we start dating soon after we meet, physical attractiveness appears to be a major factor in determining such decisions, and we end up with somebody who's about as attractive as we are, If, in contrast, we know the person for a while before we start dating or if we are friends first physical attractiveness appears to be much less important, and we are less likely to be similar to our spouse on the dimension of looks," says Finkel. The researchers looked at data collected from 167 couples, 67 dating and 100 married, who were participating in a longitudinal study of romantic relationships.

Wear the right make-up and hair: Make-up in natural hues and a simple hairstyle are good to go. Loosely tousled, side swept hair with light highlights can add that perfect touch to the outfit. Make-up shouldn’t be too loud. Warm, glossy shades for the lips and neutral palettes for the cheeks will do the trick.

Choose The Right Color Lengha to Complement your Skin Tone:

Accessorize well: Wear jewelry that complements your outfit. Wearing contemporary styles with traditional outfits and vice versa is a big faux pas. It is also essential to remember that less is more. Indian brides tend to adorn themselves in jewelry, but let not it not take away from the outfit.

Being Social Is Facebook addiction pushing up divorce cases? London, (IANS) If you think excessive Facebook use by your spouse is behind your divorce, then you may be right, says a study. Researchers, however, said that their findings do not establish a "cause-and-effect relationship" and need further individual data. For the study, they looked at the rise of Facebook use and the rate of divorce cases in each state in the US. They found that a 20 percent increase in the number of Facebook usage in a given state is associated with a four percent increase in the divorce rate the following year. "People who spent more time on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites were more likely to have an unhappy marriage and were thinking about divorce," researchers added. However, researchers could not identify who exactly was creating new Facebook accounts. The people increasing their Facebook usage were not necessarily the same people who were getting divorced, the study noted. The study, reported by Time magazine, was published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior.

Festive Treats Superfoods don't just come from your supermarket's produce aisle. In fact those chocolate candy bars next to the gummy bears now qualify. Study after study proves that dark chocolate sweet, rich, and delicious is good for more than curing a broken heart. The secret behind its powerful punch is cacao, also the source of the sweet's distinct taste. Packed with healthy chemicals like flavonoids and the obromine, this little bean is a disease-killing bullet. The only problem? Cacao on its own is bitter, chalky, nasty stuff. There is considerable evidence that cocoa can provide powerful health benefits, being especially protective against cardiovascular disease. Dark chocolates often contain some sugar, but the amounts are usually small and the darker the chocolate, the less sugar it will contain. Most commercial chocolates are highly processed. Although it is believed that dark chocolate contained the highest levels flavanols, recent research indicates that, depending on how the dark chocolate was processed, this may not be true. The good news is that most major chocolate manufacturers are looking for ways to keep the flavanols in their processed chocolates. Some of the Benefits of Chocolate are     

Loneliness is deadly for elderly New York, Nov 24 (IANS) For older adults, perceived social isolation is a major health risk that can increase the chances of premature death by 14 percent. The researchers found that loneliness leads to fight-or-flight stress signaling, which can ultimately affect the production of white blood cells. Essentially, lonely people had a less effective immune response and more inflammation than non-lonely people, researchers from the University of Chicago and the University of California-Los Angeles found. The team examined gene expression in leukocytes, cells of the immune system that are involved in protecting the body against bacteria and viruses. As expected, the leukocytes of lonely humans

"The 'danger signals' activated in the brain by loneliness ultimately affect the production of white blood cells. The resulting shift in monocyte output may both propagate loneliness and contribute to its associated health risks," the researchers said.

Eating healthy can be a challenge especially when you want to lose weight but are not sure about what is a healthier option that will contribute to your weight loss. We got Rakhee Todankar, a nutritionist at Gold's Gym, to help you make the right choice between popular food items. DHOKLA VS IDLI Dhokla (2 pieces) 80 calories - Idli ( 2 ) 150 calories Dhokla and idli both are equally healthy. While the former is made with gram flour (besan) and subsequently steamed, the latter goes through a fermentation process, which increases the bioavailability of proteins and enhances the vitamin B content of the food. As it is steamed, fat content is low and it is easily digestible. Dhokla has a low glycemic index (it releases glucose at a more sustained rate) which makes it good for diabetics. Due to lower glycemic index, and calorie count, besan is often used as a low calorie food for those trying to lose weight. Since besan does not contain gluten, it is a great substitute to wheat for those people who are allergic to gluten. Use of dal and rice in idli is a good combination as the amino acids in them complement each other. Both can be made healthier by adding different veggies and pulses in it. PITA BREAD VS REGULAR BREAD Pita bread 100 gm- 266 calories-Regular bread 100 gm-266cal The ingredients and nutritional value of pita bread and regular bread are essentially identical. To make it a healthier option all purpose flour can be replaced with whole wheat or multigrain.

Wheat chapati is the healthiest option because wheat rotis get slowly digested it results in a feeling of satiety for a longer time and hence it's good for weight watchers. Wheat rotis take longer time to digest which helps to maintain blood sugar levels. Rotis or chapatis made from whole wheat are low in fat and rich in fiber, hence reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer. FRIED EGG VS FRIED FISH One fried egg 160 calories - Two pieces for fried fish 190 calories Egg as well as fish are healthy as both are high in protein. They contain good fats and vitamins. To make it healthier instead of frying one can make boiled egg or grilled/steamed fish. UPMA VS POHA Upma 1 cup-270 Kcal - Poha 1 cup-270 Both are good as long as they are made in 1-2 tsp oil. Many people hate to eat to vegetables, but if you add vegetables like peas, carrots, capsicum, sweet corn and onions etc, or sprouts in the upma/poha, this will not only taste better but also bring color to the white, pale looking upma and of course increase its nutrients value.

London (IANS) Not just making you calm and creating a feeling of kindness, a mere seven-minute of meditation daily can help reduce racial bias too, a new study shows. The researchers found that just seven minutes of a meditation technique called Loving kindness meditation (LKM) directed to a member of a specific racial group (in this case, a black person) was sufficient to reduce racial bias towards that group. The Loving-kindness meditation (LKM) is a Buddhist practise that promotes unconditional kindness towards oneself and others. "This indicates that some meditation techniques are about much more than feeling good and might be an important tool for enhancing inter-group harmony," said lead researcher Alexander Stell, doctoral student in psychology from University of Sussex. LKM is known to engender happiness and kindness to oneself and others through repeating phrases such as "may you be happy and healthy" while visualizing a particular person. Some previous studies have shown that inducing happiness in people, for example by exposing them to upbeat music, can actually make them more likely to have prejudiced thoughts compared to those hearing sad music. For the new study, 71 white, non-meditating adults were each given a photo of a gendermatched black person and either received taped LKM instructions or instructions to look at the photos and notice certain features of the face. Both conditions lasted just seven minutes. The researchers then scored the reaction times of the participants who were asked to match up positive and negative words (for example "happiness" or "wrong") with faces that belonged to either their own or another ethnic group. The team found that just seven minutes of LKM directed to a member of a specific racial group was sufficient to reduce racial bias towards that group. Additionally, the researchers measured levels of positive emotions and found that people doing LKM showed a significant enhancement in generating positive emotions. The study was published in the journal Motivation and Emotion.

New Delhi (IANS) At a time when writers, filmmakers and historians have revolted against a rising culture of intolerance towards freedom of speech, Indian cinematic icon Amitabh Bachchan, a widely followed celebrity on social media, says he's always cautious about expressing himself to avoid "unwanted controversy". "I exercise a lot of restraint in expressing myself on various issues. I don't want to create unnecessary controversy." He also said that if he is ever forced into commenting on something, "I will perhaps not be able to give an adequate reply, or I will excuse myself from it because either I don't have the right answers or I don't wish to make comments on it." His adeptness with technology has improved over the years and, unlike many his age, he has embraced it beautifully, even though he admitted that he's not totally comfortable with it. "My kids and grandchildren help me with these modern inventions. Sometimes when I don't know how to work on a mobile or a laptop or an iPad they are very conversant to that, so I seek their help." He feels the onus to introduce "older generations, grandparents and at many times parents who are not conversant with technology " lies on the youngsters. Recounting one incident when he introduced his father to a mobile phone, he shared: “I remember the first time when I took a mobile phone to my father, he had actually backed away from it... like there was some kind of danger involved here. "But gradually once they get used to it, they understand."
