HEALTH & FITNESS What you really need to be doing From the food you eat to activity levels, every aspect needs to be focused on for the next few months.

Here is a simple formula, to safeguard your health during the winter season. !! The cold nip of winter is in the air and that's the sign to start taking some extra care of your health. Your body's reaction to the change in weather, the considerably lower temperatures from 8.00 p.m. to 8.00 a.m., the heavy winds that lash it while going to work and returning home, make it essential to take a few precautions. Add to this scenario a few aggravating factors like pollution, stress combined with lack of sleep and you have the perfect crisis in the making if one is careless. Here is a simple formula, to safeguard your health during the winter season. Step one, cover up. A warm jacket or sweater with a muffler to cover the throat and ears if necessary are ideal. Increase your intake of liquids, take hot soup for breakfast, stick to hot tea with ginger to ward off the air-conditioning during extended meetings and end the day with a mug of hot milk. Avoid heavy meals, fried oily food and inherently cold items like curd, fruits like banana and watermelon, etc. Be sure to warm up before you exercise or even walk. Keep in mind that winter is tough on skin. Dry, itchy, unhealthy skin can be a major nuisance and

also affect your looks. Choose a thicker cold cream for the colder months. Don't neglect sunscreen either. It may be freezing cold but the sun is still present and there is still the potential to damage your skin by leaving it unprotected from the sun. Cold wind can be damaging to the delicate skin on lips, so be sure to protect them with a quality lip balm to keep them from drying out and potentially cracking and bleeding. Also be sure to take care of your nails and cuticles. With winter coming there will be lots of cold days that simply make people want to stay inside and keep warm. However, all those days spent indoors is generally accompanied by the winter blues. Taking a yoga or Pilates class will help you get out and about, meet new people, and even tone up your muscles! This is great way to stay active and in shape over the winter. A bike ride can be enjoyable during the winter because the cool air is refreshing. Just remember to bundle up before heading out on your winter bike ride so you do not get too cold or risk overexposure to the cold weather. Going for a walk is always a great way to get yourself in motion. It doesn't matter if it is a slow leisurely walk or a brisk one you will get benefits from walking and being active. If you like to be active in the garden in the summer then there is no reason why you should stop just because the temperature drops. A great idea to keeping active in winter is to plant a winter garden. Above all, keep yourself active, try and eat your dinner earlier and moisturize your skin adequately. That's the perfect recipe for getting through the winter season safely in good health. By Vijay Pandya FOR ADVERTISING CALL 404-246-3256

SAFETY & SECURITY

purchase insurance, so if the item is broken or stolen, the credit card company will insure its replacement cost. Keep your card to yourself. Don’t pull out your credit card to pay for a purchase until you get to the cash register. As you stand there holding your card in line, someone could copy down your credit card number or snap a photo of your card with a cell phone. Each time we venture out the door with our wallet or purse full of credit and debit cards, check books and personal identification, we risk falling victim to theft. During the holidays, as we shift into shopping crunch mode, we increase our exposure to such unfortunate circumstances. Often, it’s when we feel stressed, pressed for time and distracted by the crowds that we lose focus and let down our guard. Thieves, scam artists and fraudsters know this, and they’re ready to take advantage of unassuming shoppers. Don’t gift them with any opportunities! Keep these tips in mind to protect yourself and your purchases during the holiday shopping season: Make a list of credit and debit card account numbers along with the phone number to call if they are lost or stolen. If this does happen, you’ll be equipped to act immediately and limit any liabilities. Leave extra cards and ID at home. Remove any debit , credit or store account cards from your purse or wallet that you won’t need while shopping. Never carry your social security card or other forms of personal identification that could compromise your identity if your purse should be lost or stolen on your shopping trip. Don’t buy with your debit card. In most cases, they offer consumers less protection against fraud in the event they are lost or stolen. As the bank is investigating the theft, the funds in question may remain unavailable for some time, potentially causing bounced checks, late fees and big headaches. Also, many credit cards offer a sort of

Don’t give out too much information. Be aware of your state’s merchant laws. Many states have laws in place that limit what information merchants can and cannot ask for when you pay for purchases by personal check and/or credit card. You’re always better off giving the least amount of personal. Get your card back after you make a purchase. Doublecheck to insure the store clerk has returned your credit card, and you’ve put it back in your wallet before you leave the counter. Take personal precautions to guard your credit cards. When shopping, especially in crowded stores or malls, men should carry wallets in their front pockets, and women should wear purse straps over the head and across the chest to thwart pickpockets and thieves. Use common sense, exercise caution, practice credit card safety, and have a happy and productive holiday shopping season.

Gifting Alternatives Save for the Future: Invest in a young child’s future and gift a U.S. savings bond. Some can be purchased for as little as $25; they may offer federal and state income tax benefits, and they earn interest or increase in value, depending on which bond you choose. Contribute toward College: Help finance a loved one’s education by starting or adding to a 529 plan at the holidays. Families can use 529 plans to put away money for college without paying federal tax on their distributions. But, anyone including grandparents, aunts, uncles or even family friends can contribute to a 529 plan. Make a Charitable Donation: Struggling to select a gift for that someone who has everything? Make a donation in the person’s name to a worthy cause they support. Give a gift that makes a difference!

PERSONAL FINANCE

While the fate of several business related tax extenders such as R & D credits, bonus depreciation, and Section 179 expensing that expired at the end of 2013 is uncertain, there are still a number of end of year tax strategies businesses can use to reduce their tax burden for 2014. Purchase New Business Equipment Business should still take advantage of Section 179 expensing this year for a couple of reasons. First, is that in 2014 businesses can elect to expense (deduct immediately) the entire cost of most new equipment up to a maximum of $25,000 for the first $200,000 of property placed in service by December 31, 2014. Keep in mind that the Section 179 deduction cannot exceed net taxable business income. In addition, unless Congress reauthorizes it, the bonus depreciation expired at the end of 2013 and is not available for 2014. Qualified property is defined as property that you placed in service during the tax year and used predominantly (more than 50 percent) in your trade or business. Property that is placed in service and then disposed of in that same tax year does not qualify, nor does property converted to personal use in the same tax year it is acquired. Timing. If you plan to purchase business equipment this year, consider the timing. AFZAL MITHWANI CPA, EA, PFS (P) 770-817-7000

Conventions. There are three types of conventions. To select the correct convention, you must know the type of property and when you placed the property in service. 1. The half-year convention: This convention applies to all property except residential rental property, nonresidential real property, and railroad gradings and tunnel bores unless the mid-quarter convention applies. Example: You buy a $40,000 piece of machinery on December 15. If the halfyear convention applies, you get onehalf year of depreciation on that machine. 2. The mid-quarter convention: The mid-quarter convention must be used if the cost of equipment placed in service during the last three months of the tax year is more than 40 percent of the total cost of all property placed in service for the entire year. 3. The mid-month convention: This convention applies only to residential rental property, nonresidential real property, and railroad gradings and tunnel bores. It treats all property placed in service (or disposed of) during any month as placed in service (or disposed of) on the midpoint of that month. Year-End Moves to Take Advantages Business energy investment

tax credits are still available for eligible systems placed in service on or before December 31, 2016. Business energy credits include solar energy systems (passive solar and solar pool-heating systems excluded), fuel cells and micro turbines, and an increased credit amount for fuel cells. The extended tax provision also established new credits for small wind-energy systems, geothermal heat pumps, and combined heat and power (CHP) systems. Utilities are allowed to use the credits as well. Partnership or S-Corporation Basis. Partners or S corporation shareholders in entities that have a loss for 2014 can deduct that loss only up to their basis in the entity. However, they can take steps to increase their basis to allow a larger deduction. Basis in the entity can be increased by lending the entity money or making a capital contribution by the end of the entity's tax year. Retirement Plans. Self-employed individuals who have not yet done so should set up self-employed retirement plans before the end of 2014. Dividend Planning. Reduce corporate profits and earnings by issuing corporate dividends to shareholders. Budgets. Every business, whether small or large should have a budget. A budget is extremely effective in making sure your business has adequate cash flow and in ensuring financial success. Once the budget has been created, then monthly actual revenue amounts can be compared to monthly budgeted amounts. If actual revenues fall short of budgeted revenues, expenses must generally be cut.

WHAT’S YOUR RASHI? Aries: March 21 to April 20. During the first half of the month, you are encouraged to focus on religious, cultural, political, academic, and/or travel related topics. During the second half of the month, you should change your focus towards your professional goals. That might seem counterintuitive during the holidays, but that is just how the positive energies are flowing this month. It is not so much that you have to be hard at work, you just need to spend time reflecting on your professional path, public reputation, leadership skills, and/or how to get along with your boss and other authority figures.

Taurus: April 21 to May 20.

As a handful of planets are moving through the area of your chart that focuses on religion, cultures, travel, and tourism, you could find that this is an excellent time for holiday travels or for enjoying spending time in religious or cultural celebrations. Your social life and your celebratory mood are in sync and you are having a lovely time getting along with everyone. You might even be able to squeeze in a bit of business networking while you are having so much fun. Do not miss out on this year’s office parties.

Gemini: May 21 to June 20. It might seem counterintuitive, but while everyone else is focusing on holiday celebrations, you are finding ways to improve your financial and professional standing. It is not that you do not have time or do not take the time to also enjoy your loved ones; it is just that you have some great financial and professional energy this time of year and you should take advantage of them while you can. To make things even more exciting, the planet of challenges and “learning opportunities” is leaving your work sector, so you can start to make some headway in this area of your life!

Cancer: June 21 to July 22.

It is not that you do not care about the rest of your friends and family, but this month seems to be really all about you and a romantic, financial, social, or business partner. The two of you are getting along beautifully, you are getting a lot accomplished together, and whenever things go wrong, it seems that as a dynamic duo you are able to fix anything. During those times this month when things get hectic at work, buddy up with a coworker and see if you can help each other resolve things as a team. It seems to be your good luck strategy across the board.

Leo: July 23 to August 22.

There is a lot of good stuff happening in your professional life and it looks like you are earning a nice commission, bonus check, or some other piece of the profits. You might even be starting a new job, launching a new project, or hiring more people to help you get through your to-do lists. You are in a very productive frame of mind and should have no trouble juggling the holidays with your busy schedule at work.

Virgo: August 23 to September 22.

The area of your chart that governs partnerships and the area of your chart that govern children, pets, loved ones, and happiness are working together to create some really fun and loving holiday energy. You have a lot to be happy about and you are able to spend quality time with the people that you love and you can squeeze in some very romantic date nights too. Somehow in the middle of all of that fun and playtime, you also manage to excel at work and maybe even boost profits or earn a commission check or a bonus.

DECEMBER 2014 Libra: September 23 to October 22. During the first half of the month, you have a lot of exciting energy encouraging you to run around town, shop, spend time with local family and neighbors, hang out with friends, etc. But by the second half of the month, you are ready to stay home and focus all of your energy on making your home a loving, fun, smart, and happy place to hang out. You could very well be hosting the holiday gatherings this year. You have the passion and drive for all of the work that goes into setting up, hosting, and then cleaning it all up again. If you did not take a vacation earlier this year, you might want to do so now. Home is where the heart is.

Scorpio: October 23 to November 22. So much of this month is about having fun while shopping, spending time with local friends and family, playful date nights, and spending quality time with your pets, children, and other loved ones. You are still working and doing a great job, but your mind is mostly on the people and activities that bring great joy into your life. So, it is really no wonder that by the end of the month, you end up in a bit of a tug-of-war between home and work.

Sagittarius : November 23 to December 21.

There is all kinds of activity happening within your finances. Some of it is excellent, like you are able to effectively create and maintain a household budget and you have no problem taking care of your living expenses. However, you are back to a situation where you are either shopping too much, being too generous over the holidays, or spending too much money on playtime activities and it is threatening to mess with your financial goals. It is not that you do not have money; you are just forgetting to keep track of how much you are spending over the holidays. Be mindful, but have fun! You have a lot of good reasons to want to kick up your heels and celebrate.

Aquarius: January 20 to February 20. The planet in charge of teaching life lessons by creating challenges in our lives is leaving the area of your chart that governs your professional success, leadership style, and reputation. You have had a really good year professionally, while Saturn was there still teaching you a thing or two about how best to conduct yourself within these areas. Just imagine how well things will go next year when Saturn is no longer in this area of your life.

Pisces: February 19 to March 20. You are still upset about your reputation, professional path, level of success, or your boss. However, you are also getting another opportunity to make progress towards achieving your financial, leadership, and professional goals. You are also in an excellent position for professional networking, committee meetings, and online marketing. But you still need to be financially cautious when dealing with friends, teams, professional groups, and the Internet. Your income is doing well, but you do not want to accidentally destroy your budget. * All astrological predictions are to be considered friendly advice based on the author’s personal opinions and used for entertainment purposes only. Capricorn – December 22 through January 20. You have an opportunity to wrap up a major project at work during the first week of this month. It should work out well and could be rather important professional development. You also are continuing to bring more romantic, emotional, and/or financial security into your life. And as the holidays approach you are really enjoying running errands and spending time with neighbors, relatives, and others within your local community.
