ONE ON ONE Chennai (IANS) Actor Nakul, who was recently seen in sleeper hit "Tamiluku En Ondrai Azhuthavum" and has been part of the Tamil industry for over a decade, says critical success doesn't matter anymore as everybody has become money minded. "Today, I don't think critical success matters anymore. It has to be commercial success. Producers have become very moolah-conscious, especially with the entry of big studios and corporate. When you take all these factors into consideration, you ought to have a good film to survive." "If a new hero is coming into the market, he has to create an impact with the box office business; otherwise it's tough to survive. Becoming a hero is easy, but staying one in the top league is extremely tough," he said.

Basking in the success of his latest film, Nakul says he has been waiting since 2009 for a hit. "I accepted 'Tamiluku Ena' merely as an obligation when the producer of my last film, 'Naan Rajavaga Pogiren', which didn't do well, came back to me with an offer. I was touched by his gesture. And when I heard the script, I was blown away and decided I had to do this film," he said. "I knew there was something about the film that'll work in our favour but I never anticipated this kind of success, which even got me appreciation from some industry bigwigs such as A.R. Murugadoss and Shankar," he said, and added that a hit is welcome anytime in one's career. Nakul also believes that "Tamiluku Ena" was more like a test for him, and that its success gave him the reassurance that he is on the right track in his career. It also made him realise that it's perfectly alright to wait for the right script to come along. Having made his cinematic debut in film maker Shankar-directed 2003 Tamil film "Boys", Nakul has only starred in eight films so far. Nakul says he doesn't know why he couldn't do more films. "I believe luck plays a major part in this industry. See, I can only choose from the offers I get. I don't have a long queue of directors outside my house waiting to cast me. I've always been more inclined towards quality than quantity. But I'm really happy with my career and I have no complaints," he said. Is he jealous of the fact that his friends who started their careers alongside him have been more successful? "I'm actually proud of my friends. Since 'Boys', they were extremely committed and had planned what they want to do next. I've never planned my career the way people usually do. It was on the last day on the sets of 'Boys' that I asked myself what I want to do next," he said. "Singing kept me alive, but that wasn't what I wanted to do," he added. Despite his share of hits and flops, Nakul says it has always been a constant struggle in the industry. He will next be seen in Tamil comedy "Narathan".

LOVE PRESCRIPTION

London (IANS) How many times do you say 'I love you' to your spouse even after completing 10 years of living under one roof? Well, if you are looking for an answer, here it is. According to a research, after spending 10 years with the same person, just 33 percent of men and women still tell their partner they love them.

What's more, just 11 percent described themselves as head-over-heels in love with their significant other while one in five said their days of being "in love" are over after spending a considerable amount of time together, according to a survey by YouGov, an international internet-based British market research firm. Relationships seem to take on a more 'practical' nature the longer two people remain together. "The partnership is less about love and affection and more about ease and dependability," researchers found. Most married couples don’t spend quality time: The thought of tying the knot or exchanging marital vows with your loved one might be exciting, but if one goes by a survey, the spark in a relationship dies down gradually after getting married. On the occasion of World Marriage Day, which falls Feb 8 this year, Bajaj Discover has released findings of a survey titled “Bajaj Discover - IMRB Relationship Survey”. “We had conducted an in-depth survey across India to understand relationships between married couple pre- and post-marriage, as well as bike usage habits," Sumeet Narang, vice president, marketing Bajaj Auto Ltd, said in a statement. "The survey revealed interesting findings on how the zing in relationships goes missing a few years into marriage. It also throws light on bike usage habits and the role it plays in their lives and relationships,” he added. On quality time being spent with each other, 57 percent couples said that it reduced gradually over the two years of marriage, coupled with a significant decline in planning a surprise for each other by 50 percent. Attributing long work hours, chasing household commitments, daily commute and more, married couples longed to grab ‘me’ time over long bike rides, which

BEAUTY SECRETS

New Delhi (IANS) From opting for fresh sunscreen, hydrating your body with summer scented lotion to not using hard makeup, ensure you take the right steps for skincare without having to spend much money, says an expert. Knock off each step on skin care tips for glowing skin and you'll be ready to pull out your favorite summer dress in no time, says Manoj Khanna, aesthetic and cosmetic surgeon of Enhance Clinics. Here are some tips: Exfoliate your body: It's very important to exfoliate your skin. Your body sheds skin cells at an amazing rate every minute of everyday. If you don't get rid of them, they'll just sitting on your skin making you look dull and dry. No matter how much lotion you use, you're never going to have glowing skin if you don't exfoliate. Gently rub your exfoliator in circular movements on your entire body from the shoulders down (you'll want a facial exfoliator for your face and neck) and rinse clean. Continue to do this two-three times a week for year-round beautiful skin. 

Go for fresh sunscreen: Throw away last year's unused sunscreen for a new bottle. Sunscreens aren't meant to last forever. Buy a new sunscreen that has UVA and UVB products and comes in SPF 30 and SPF 70. You should be using a full shot glass for your body and a full teaspoon just on your face. Reapply every one or two hours that you are in the sun to ensure a summer full of safe sun fun. 



Hydrate your body with a summer-scented lotion: Find a summery lotion that you won't forget to put on. It's time to pack away your thick winter body butters for more light summery lotions. You don't have time to wait for your lotion to sink in, so look for something light, fast absorbing. Gels and purees are perfect fast absorbers. Nothing spells summer more than a light refreshing fruity lotion.  Don't forget your feet: Winter boots have long since been packed away; it's sandal season ladies. Either go or get a pedicure (try a beauty school if cost is a factor), or give yourself an at-home pedicure. You scrub off the dead dry skin to reveal your sandal ready feet. Nothing is worse than seeing dull dry feet inside cute sandals. It doesn't have to be a big ordeal. Keep a foot scrub and file in your shower and scrub your feet a few times a week. You'll notice a big difference in the softness of your feet.

Avoid makeup: During summer, less makeup is best. Under the intolerant sun natural looks are best. If you intend to use foundation then also apply face powder with SPF to avoid patchy skin. To protect your lips always use a gloss or a lip balm with an SPF of 15 to make your lips fresher. Eye make is something which should be very much avoided in summer. 

THE TRAVELLER

Cairo (IANS) In the middle of the vast and eerily desolate landscape on the outskirts of Cairo stand the iconic pyramids of Giza and the great Sphinx, a riveting sight that took my breath away. For a moment, it felt like time stood still as I gazed at the surreal beauty and grandeur of the man-made marvels that have defined Egypt from time immemorial. The three pyramids of Cheops (Khufu), Chephren (Khafre) and Mycernius (Menkaure) in front of me made up for the long walk under the scorching sun on the hot desert sand while the gentle breeze in the shade provided by the massive pyramid walls cleaned the sweat beads on my forehead. A specimen of fine human engineering and robust construction techniques present in ancient Egyptian civilization, the pyramids have stood the test of time and left many archaeologists of the world baffled. "Ladies and gentlemen, this is the time you guys have all been waiting for," said our local guide Sheriff Hassan in heavily accented English as he excitedly pointed with both his hands towards the pyramids in the background. According to Hassan, who works with Lady Egypt Tours based in Giza, back in ancient Egypt it was common for kings and queens to construct pyramids for themselves when they were alive as a final place to rest in their afterlife. 22

DESI EXPRESS MAGAZINE

The materials used were two different types of limestone weighing between two and 15 tones. The first pyramid - Djoser - was built in Saqqara on the west bank of the river Nile, the site of royal burials since around 2100 BC, but following many instances of robbers breaking into pyramids to steal jewelry and other valuables buried alongside kings, the practice was stopped about 1,000 years ago, said Hassan. Besides the famous pyramids, cultural highlights in Cairo include the Egyptian museum, which has a separate section for human and animal mummies. Housing the world's most extensive collection of pharaonic antiquities, the museum exhibits the treasures of Tutankhamun, wooden models of daily life, statuettes of divinities, and a rare group of Faiyum Portraits. Moving down south is the tourist hotspot of Luxor which provides an opportunity to explore historical sites like the Valley of Kings and Queens on the Nile's west bank while riding on a hot air balloon which can easily be the highlight of your trip. Just indulge yourself in a felucca cruise on the Nile. Sit back and reflect on life as gentle gusts of wind form ripple patterns on the surface of the Nile - among the world's longest rivers and on the banks of which lives 96 percent of the Egyptian population.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Our calorieladen diets are generating more ill health than physical inactivity, alcohol and smoking combined, reveals significant research. The results bust the myth that anyone - and that includes athletes can outrun a bad diet. “The evidence now suggests that up to 40 percent of those within a normal weight (BMI) range will none the less harbor harmful metabolic abnormalities typically associated with obesity,” warned experts in an editorial that appeared in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Few people realise this and many wrongly believe that obesity is entirely due to lack of exercise a perception that is firmly rooted in corporate marketing. The prevalence of diabetes increases 11-fold for every 150 additional sugar calories consumed daily, compared with the equivalent amount of calories consumed as fat. The evidence now suggests that carbs are no better. Recent research indicates that cutting down on dietary carbohydrate is the single most effective approach for reducing all of the features of the metabolic syndrome and should be the primary strategy for treating diabetes, with benefits occurring even in the absence of weight loss. Furthermore, research suggests that rather than carbohydrate 26

loading ahead of intense exercise, athletes would be better off adopting a high fat low-carb diet. The food environment needs to be changed so that people automatically make healthy choices, suggest the authors. This "will have far greater impact on population health than counseling or education. Healthy choice must become the easy choice", they wrote. They describe the public relations tactics of the food industry as "chillingly similar to those of Big Tobacco", which deployed denial, doubt, confusion and “bent scientists” to convince the public that smoking was not linked to lung cancer. “Celebrity endorsements of sugary drinks and the association of junk food and sport must end," they declared, adding that health clubs and gyms need to set an example by removing the sale of these products from their premises. Public health messaging has unhelpfully focused on maintaining a “healthy weight” through calorie counting but it is the source of the calories that matters. “Sugar calories promote fat storage and hunger. Fat calories induce fullness or satiation,” they contended. “Let us bust the myth of physical inactivity and obesity. You can't outrun a bad diet," they concluded. FASHION TRENS

Colonial gentleman’s clothing ... now a fashion trend… What was once seen as the colonial gentleman’s clothing is now a fashion trend… take a look at the twists taken by the breeches… IT didn’t quite start out as a fashion statement to be tailored for the first time in the year 1890. Jodhpur pants are traditionally a take on the churidaar used mainly in Rajasthan. It’s known that Sir Pratap Singh, one of the younger sons of the Maharajah of Jodhpur at the time was the one to have perfected this particular style of pants. These were worn mostly to make horse-riding a comfortable practice. Originally, Jodhpurs looked quite similar to the breeches from the West, where fabric at the hip was loose to ensure comfort and tightened from the calf to the ankle to avoid rubbing while riding. However, Sir Pratap Singh was also responsible for popularizing the Jodhpur pants in England, which had its share of breeches already, something that was part of a young boy’s wardrobe as soon as he turned into an adult. In a more present scenario, the Jodhpur pants, which are still worn in Rajasthan during weddings and special occasions, have become a fashionable item in a man and even a woman’s wardrobe. Designer Ramesh Dembla, says, “The traditional Jodhpur trousers have evolved in different ways. But the garment continues to remain as elegant as it was, from the day one. However these trousers can be carried off in the right way only by few,” informs Ramesh. On the question of what best can be sported along with it, he says, “You can’t afford to pick something too casual for Jodhpur pants. Preferably, a waist coast or a jacket is what you should be wearing with it.” Model Zoheb Yusuf, who has worn breeches and Jodhpur pants for many fashion shows, says, “I think they look absolutely cool. With a well-fitted waist coast to go along with it, they make a big fashion statement,” adding, “I think John Abraham carries it off really well. This costume requires a good physic to pull it off and he does it best.” Photographer Waseem Khan is yet another person who loves his Jodhpurs. “Since it’s baggy from waist to the knee, these pants are incredibly comfortable. However, it requires a certain technique to wear them in the right way. One rule is to wear the right top,” he offers. The different kinds of fabric used to make the garment have evolved to create something that looks less cumbersome and offers the same comfort level, without flaring at thighs and hips.

PARENTING how can we pass on that information to a six-year-old who will never understand the moral behind the story where a crow fills up a cracked vase with stones to drink water on a very hot summer’s day? It’s the mineral water generation anyway. Kids are kids only as long as they’re babies today, they just zoom from young adults to adults. I met a 12-year-old boy recently who is on a ‘diet’ because he understands that he won’t be as popular with the girls if he were not lean.

I looked around the medium-sized apartment and wondered why they had three television sets in the first place. “Why don’t you encourage him to go out and play?” I offered, very, I repeat, very, meekly. “WHERE?” she whined. Okay, so I have been told that the children of the new age don’t grow up the way we did. They have a different rate of metabolism and they work on the triple tempo mechanism. Whatever we did, they do it thrice as faster and thrice as earlier. A few people that I know, who do have kids, ranging from zero to 15, are of the opinion that their children will never know the joys of a real childhood and it’s all because of the virtual distractions that rule their lives. There are cartoon shows, reality shows, movies, video games and now Facebook and Justin Bieber. In comparison, hopscotch is an endangered phenomenon. Gone are the days when we played I Spy or Ludo and other street games and then came home at sundown to do our homework. Street games are of course out of the question because there are no ‘safe’ streets anymore, which is why parents find it easier to go out and buy a PlayStation to keep their child and his/her friends entertained. However, I am beginning to believe that television, computers and social networking sites have very little to do with the way these kids’ lives have turned out. The fault is ours. We took Tintin out of their hands and put a remote control into those tiny palms. And we showed the tots off when they became computer geniuses. We pushed them into this. In a more intellectually reticent society, virtual compensations found it easier to invade our lives. When we have forgotten the folk tales we grew up on, 32

No more Famous Five, Aesop’s Fables or such like ironically, a few old-school TV channels tried to bring back stories of the past with the help of animation or real life series. But I am quite certain that only a handful of kids actually watch them. A good question was put to me this morning. If we had learnt what these kids know today, 30 years ago, would we have been as advanced? I hope not.

—Priyadarshini Nandy “I tell you — if that boy watches any more TV I will disconnect all three in the house,” said my very disgruntled friend, glaring at her 12-year old flipping through various channels and then finally settling on a action series.

Filing a past due return may not be as difficult as you think. Taxpayers should file all tax returns that are due, regardless of whether full payment can be made with the return. Depending on an individual's circumstances, a taxpayer filing late may qualify for a payment plan. It is important, however, to know that full payment of taxes upfront saves you money.

installment agreement over a greater period of time. 

A monthly payment plan or installment agreement gives a taxpayer more time to pay. However, penalties and interest will continue to be charged on the unpaid portion of the debt throughout the duration of the installment agreement/payment plan. Taxpayers who owe $25,000 or less in combined tax, penalties and interest can apply for and receive immediate notification of approval through an IRS web-based application. Balances over $25,000 require taxpayers to complete a financial statement to determine the monthly payment amount for an installment plan.



When it comes to paying your tax bill, it is important to review all your options; the interest rate on a loan or credit card may be lower than the combination of penalties and interest imposed by the Internal Revenue Code. You should pay as much as possible before entering into an installment agreement.

Taxpayers who need more time to pay can set up either a short-term payment extension or a monthly payment plan. 

A short-term extension gives a taxpayer an additional 60 to 120 days to pay. No fee is charged, but the late-payment penalty plus interest will apply. It’s one of the most pressing concerns facing most youngsters these days: the dreaded Facebook “friend request” from a parent! For most young people, Facebook is a tool to openly express what they feel and conform to their peer group by posting pictures of themselves partying, hanging out and sometimes, just acting crazy. So what happens when this cocoon of safety and freedom from prying eyes is pierced by the sight of your parent, wanting to be friends with you on the website? Do you accept the request, ignore it or block your mom or dad? Content analyst Rupsa Ray says that when she first saw her mother’s ‘friend request’, she was stunned and reluctant to accept it. But later, having no choice, she did allow her mom into her virtual friends circle. “My mother has never asked me about my status updates or photos. She is very noninterfering. There are some photos of me drinking and partying 46

with my friends, but my mom and extended family all know that I drink socially. My brother, however, hasn’t been so liberal and has added filters to keep them from viewing his news feeds, updates and photos,” she smiles. An engineering student, on condition of anonymity, states that he has actively ignored friend suggestions of parents and would promptly refuse friend requests from them. “I don’t want to provide any justifications or explanations in the questioning sessions that I know will follow. I like to freely express my thoughts and post any photos I like, without a sword over my head,” he adds mischievously. The phenomenon even has a website dedicated to it myparentsjoinedfacebook.com, which greets the visitor with ‘Oh Crap. My parents joined Facebook,’ adding, ‘Congratulations! Your parents just joined Facebook. Your life is officially over.’ The site also invites responses from individuals to vent out their feelings on their parents’ arrival on Facebook. Law student Aniruddha Kulkarni, is a rare bird, having brought his mother to Facebook, creating an account for her and becoming her first friend on the networking website. “My mother has access to all my content. She isn’t very active on Facebook, so it’s cool. But there was this one time when she’d freaked out after seeing a photo I was tagged in, which had me hugging a girl. Even though she isn’t orthodox, she is a little conservative and was startled. She asked me if I went around hugging girls in college and having pictures clicked,” he laughs. A mother of two young sons, on condition of anonymity, states that she does go check her sons’ profiles on Facebook, to see who they interact with and the level of intimacy those interactions carry, especially ones with the opposite sex. “Children have two completely different personas at home and online. WHO MATCHES SHASHI KAPOOR’S LOOKS, TALENT? RISHI SAYS THREE DO

FILMMAKERS CHANGING HERO OF INDIAN CINEMA: RANBIR KAPOOR

Panaji (IANS) A coming-of-age role in “Wake Up Sid”, a troubled musician in “Rockstar”, a deaf and mute prankster in “Barfi!” and an aggressive man of great ambitions in “Bombay Velvet” clearly, Bollywood’s quintessential ‘heroism’ does not match actor Ranbir Kapoor’s sensibilities. He says it’s possible thanks to filmmakers who are out to redefine the ‘hero’ of Indian cinema. “Cinema is progressing… Admitting that it’s hard to escape parallels with his grandfather, Ranbir said he has “so far been quite safe from being compared to my family as I have an individualistic approach to my work”. “I can’t see myself punching someone who flies 20 ft away. I always find heroism in the underhero. More than the achievement, the honest trying of a character and struggle to get it… I think that has a greater glory than being a winner. After “Bombay Velvet” release, Ranbir will continue his journey of experimenting with roles. Personally, he says “I can’t see myself as a hero.”

Mumbai (IANS) Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor feels there are only three actors from Bollywood who match up the looks of the cine icon and his uncle Shashi Kapoor. The first is “Dabangg” star Salman Khan followed by Bollywood’s Greek god Hrithik Roshan and then, Rishi’s son Ranbir Kapoor. The 62-year-old took to the virtual platform to talk about his uncle after Shashi was conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the iconic Prithvi Theatre. Shashi is best known for his nuanced performance in memorable films like “Satyam Shivam Sundaram”, “Trishul”, “Kabhi Kabhie”& “Vijeta”

PEOPLE WANT TO ADOPT ME: DEEPIKA ON ‘PIKU’ SUCCESS Mumbai (IANS) Her act as a selfless daughter, who spends more time listening to her father’s constipation tales than on her professional or marital pursuits in “Piku”, has garnered an “overwhelming” response for actress Deepika Padukone. But the most heartening has been the response from people who have expressed a wish to “adopt” her. “I think we had all thought that it’s a sweet film and that people will connect with it, but none of us had expected it to become this big. It’s gone beyond our own control. The biggest compliment for me has been… I know it may sound funny, but a lot of people want to adopt me,” said the 29-year-old. Bollywood’s glamour girl, who had ditched her dark hair for new film “Fitoor”, says she experienced jitters before stepping into a salon for the makeover. “At the same time, we both thought… this character… would be something fiery and new. We both instantly agreed on this and decided to colour the hair red,” Katrina, who was in Cannes as the L’Oreal Paris brand ambassador.

Sagittarius : November 23 to December 21. You and a partner or rival are able to iron out your disagreements. You could even find that you are ready to have some fun together afterwards. There is a great deal of positive energy between the two of you now. You are also able to funnel more romantic and financial security into your home or private life. A couple of months ago, you and then later your partner were both ticked off about someone or something in your private life. Now, you seem to have worked it out and you are feeling much better about the situation. Capricorn – December 22 through January 20. Last month, you were dealing with a lot of delays and dramas at work. You were also dealing with a partner or rival that was unhappy about you and your home life. Cancer: June 21 to July 22. After the emotional dramas of last month, you are ready for a vacation and the half of this month could be a good time for you to schedule it. However, if you choose to stay home and work, there are some wonderful financial and leadership aspects happening in that area of your life too. Regardless, you are able to take some time to think about your professional and financial goals and you are able to reflect on whether or not they are in alignment with your spiritual, emotional, and ethical beliefs. You do not seem to do much more than reflect on the matter in order to begin feeling better about things in general.
