ALABAMA, NORTH CAROLINA, SOUTH CAROLINA, TENNESSEE FATCA PROMPTING US NRIS TO SELL PROPERTY IN INDIA

MUMBAI|NEW DELHI: Many US-based nonresident Indians are considering selling their property in India - even at a discount - amid confusion and fear that a new informationsharing protocol may bring their assets, bank accounts, mutual funds and capital market investments in India under the scanner of US tax authorities.

India and the US recently agreed to implement the US Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act ( FATCA), a law aimed at ensuring that tax is paid on income generated from generated from wealth parked overseas. Under the agreement, they would share information about citizens with assets in each other's countries. Unlike the case of mutual funds and bank accounts, it isn't as easy for the Indian government to identify property held by NRIs in India. However, as systems become more robust, details of their assets will be shared.

Hope garba GARBA WITH A PURPOSE

Close to 400 people of different races, religions, and communities came together at the HOPE Garba to celebrate three years of HOPE (Helping Organizations & People Everywhere), by dancing to Bollywood style Garba, eating Indian street foods, and smiling for the photo booths, but this is only the tip of the iceberg of what HOPE strives to accomplish. HOPE is a local nonprofit founded by young adults in Atlanta who seek to change the world. They focus on building awareness, engaging the community and fundraising for nonprofits focused on basic needs with sustainable solutions. To help accomplish these goals, HOPE hosts a variety of events to bring the community together in a fun way. HOPE Garba was used as a unique opportunity to show off the Indo-Pak culture to the community at large while bringing everyone together through the universal love of dance and philanthropy. While sharing the Garba-floor with such a diverse community the attendees learned about the efforts taken by the three nonprofits HOPE has partnered with for the past 3 years. They learned about the sustainable initiatives taken by Men Stopping Violence as they attempt to educate those around them to reduce the prevalence of domestic violence. They opened ourselves to understand the progress made by Atlanta Community Food Bank to assist those who cannot feed themselves. And about Beautiful In Every Shade is a grassroots empowerment movement affirming and celebrating the beauty found in every human being. HOPE hopes to encourage other young professionals to realize that changing the world is not a task left for the politicians or corporations but that there are small things each of us can do to make the world a better place. Check them out at their next event: HOPE Dodgeball at Philips Arena on Jan 16th, 2016! Contact them at HOPE.FSM@gmail or 313.312.HOPE (4673) to participate, volunteer or partner. — By Umer Rupani - Co-Founder & Executive Board Member HOPE Inc

News Update SIKHS INCREASINGLY BECOMING THE TARGET OF RACIAL ATTACKS IN THE US

SHAAM-E-SANGEET RAISES OVER $40,000 FOR EKAL VIDYALAYAS IN INDIA Ekal’s Corporate Outreach Kiran Kodithala highlighted Ekal’s oneteacher school model which exists in all the Indian states, from Kashmir to Kerala, on an annual sponsorship of only $365 and provides basic education to nearly 20-30 students and vocational training to adults.

Washington (IANS) With Sikhs increasingly becoming the target of racial attacks in the US, a media report says they are frequently mistaken for terrorists and radicals as they are conflated with Muslims by many Americans. In the latest string of incidents targeting turbaned Sikh Americans, Amrik Singh Bal, 68, was assaulted in California on Saturday morning while waiting for a ride to work, the Washington Post reported on Monday.

According to police, the suspects after striking the victim with their car and assaulting him while he was down, yelled: "Why are you here?" The attack is being investigated as a hate crime. "Sikhs have been mistaken for terrorists and radicals and continue to suffer after 9/11," the Post quoted Iqbal S. Grewal, a member of the Sikh Council of Central California, as saying in an interview to the Fresno Bee following the assault. "This is the latest episode of what Sikhs have been enduring when they are very peace-loving and hard-working citizens of this great country and not members of Al Qaeda or ISIS or any other radical group." The Sikh Coalition said there were more than 300 cases of violence and discrimination against Sikhs in the US in the first month after the 2001 attacks. "Over the last few weeks, the level of intimidation is worse than it was after September 11," Harsimran Kaur, the Sikh Coalition's legal director, told The Post. "Then, people were angry at the terrorists and now they're angry at Muslims, anyone who is seen as Muslim, or anyone who is perceived as being 'other.' Earlier this month, a Sikh store clerk in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was shot in the face during a robbery. The victim reported that the assailant called him a "terrorist." Following an attack by a Muslim couple at a social services centre in San Bernardino, California, a gurdwara in nearby Orange county was vandalized with hateful graffiti earlier this month, according to the Sikh Coalition. In September this year, Inderjit Singh Mukker, a father of two on his way to the grocery store, was savagely assaulted in a Chicago suburb after being called "bin Laden."

BANKS, MFS ASK US NRIS TO SUBMIT FATCA CERTIFICATES

MUMBAI: Indian banks and mutual funds have in the past fortnight started warning NRIs who hold an American passport or are working in the US that their accounts could be frozen unless they get a tax-compliant certificate from US authorities, thanks to a treaty signed by New Delhi and Washington. Under the US Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), the two countries would share information about citizens who own properties, bank accounts and other investments in

each other's territory. As per the new regulations, US citizens or those working in the US on H1B visa would need a FATCA-compliance certificate to be submitted to their banks. The same certificate needs to be provided to also mutual funds and before making direct investment in the capital market. Banks including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and State Bank of India, as well as mutual funds like Reliance Mutual fund, Franklin Templeton and DSP Blackrock have asked their customers to submit the FATCA certificates. This means that going ahead US citizens who don't give these declarations would not be able to invest or keep money in India."

Take a few minutes to look over the bank statement. Paying unnecessary fees and bank charges. Banking is a competitive business. There are banks that charge fees for various services and others that do not. Don't pay unnecessary fees because you are too lazy to shop around. Likewise, don't settle for lower interest rates if there are higher ones at another convenient bank.

Using An Easy Password. First, don't use an obvious password like your birth date. Second, change your password periodically. Third, do not write your password down, particularly anyplace outside of your own home.

Leaving A Literal Paper Trail. Leaving discarded bank documents behind makes you an easy target for identity thieves and con artists. If you make a mistake on a deposit slip, for example, don't just toss it on the counter or even into the bank garbage can without tearing it up first. shred them or tear them up into small pieces.

Leaving Bank Account Numbers. If you are reviewing your bank statement at office, put it in your pocket or purse when you are done.

History Traces ANCIENT TEMPLES, DUDHSA GAR LAKE & STRONG FOR TIFICATIONS MAKE BHU DARGAD A PLEASURABLE

New York (IANS) If your romantic relationship is in trouble and you always want your partner to initiate reconciliation after a conflict, please read on. Researchers have found that when conflict occurs in romantic relationships, the negative emotional climate that results hinders a person's ability to recognize their partner's attempts to reach out to them. However, talking things out with your partner can undo much of the damage, the findings showed. "When conflict occurred, it influenced the way persons rated their partner's general efforts to work on their relationship,” said study co-author Brian Ogolsky, professor at the University of Illinois in the US. "If partners withdrew or become contemptuous or critical, the bad feelings lingered, and that negative emotion dampened people's ability to process or perceive their partner's attempts to repair what was wrong between them," Ogolsky noted. For the study, 98 same sex couples kept a 14-day diary in which they recorded conflict and answered questions about how they had responded to it. For example, did they withdraw? Did they lash out? Did they blame the other person? Did they threaten to leave? Or did they take a more positive approach? Did they persist in their attempts to communicate? Did they prioritise solving the problem? Answers to these questions predicted whether they were able to recognise that their partner was attempting to mend the relationship. After an argument, in a newly chilly emotional climate, communication styles can be very important, Ogolsky explained. "Hostile feelings do not gain a foothold among constructive communicators - people who talk things out and work through the problem in a constructive manner. That is a game changer for the way a couple's relationship will develop," he noted. "If you use effective strategies to manage conflicts on a daily basis when those conflicts are small, you are likely to create a warmer emotional climate and have better outcomes,” Ogolsky noted. The findings appeared in the Journal of Family Psychology. Bhudargad near Gargoti is famous for its Bhairavnath temple, a deity of many families in Kolhapur. Every year devotees visit this temple in large numbers. This massive fort offers an easy yet pleasurable trek in any season. Ancient temples, the famous Dudhsagar lake, strong fortifications are the major attractions. IN THE PAST Like the many other forts in Kolhapur, Bhudargad was also built by King Bhoj II. Later, Shivaji Maharaj captured it in 1667 and converted it into a strong military base by adding fortifications and several buildings. However, Adilshah of Bijapur immediately launched a successful attack in an attempt to restrict Shivaji’s military movements. Four years later, the Maratha army recaptured the fort and this time it remained with them for a long time. In 1844, the fort played a major role for the rebels against the British army. After a severe battle, the British overpowered the rebels and destroyed most of the constructions. HOW TO GO The fort is well-accessible from Gargoti, which is 50 km from Kolhapur. Regular bus service is available, few buses go directly to Peth Shivapur, at the fort’s base. However, if you have your own vehicle, then there is a short cut through Pushpnagar Shindewadi Ranewadi route towards Peth Shivapur. A serpentine tar road takes you directly on the fort in a few minutes. WHAT TO SEE The Hemadpanthi style Bhairavnath temple, the main attraction is always crowded with devotees. If you are planning a night stay then the temple is a good option. A small canon is placed in the temple’s proximity. The fort is so huge that the nearby residents cultivate crops on it. The huge lake, known as Dudhsagar for the white colored water, is a major water source. Apart from this, ancient temples of Lord Shiva and goddess Bhavani, a small tunnel called as Jakkhubai cave are worth visiting. It takes almost three-four hours to fully explore the fort. Several bird species like Syke’s lark are seen in large numbers. Enjoy the misty weather and heavy rains here and take away the most refreshing moments this season.

Wedding

Simple Styling Tips We Can Learn From Alia Bhatt, Classy, fresh, edgy and chic: all these words define her style and personality. Regarded as the youngest fashionista to have entered Bollywood, her remarkable dressing can make any 20something girl green with envy.

EXCHANGES OF SPARKLES

Play it cute with shorts and skirts: Try to put together an adorable summer look by incorporating denim shorts and mini skirts in it by pairing them with graphic t-shirts and blowy blouses. You can increase the style quotient of the look by going with printed skirts and shorts.

The ring ceremony is the only ritual common to all communities. Slipping that piece of circular metal on your special one’s finger is believed to be building the bond of a lifetime. Though marriage ceremonies differ from culture to culture, exchange of the rings is probably the only ritual common to all.

Go with similar hues, when wearing vibrant Indian with more than 2 colors: When wearing mix-and-match Indian outfits with three or four colors, try to play with the hues on the same side of the shade plate, and go with prints and embroideries that complement each other.

On one hand, it declares end of formalities in the marriage ceremony while on the other it announces the new beginning of a united life.

When wearing a printed dress, keep the rest of the look simple: When wearing printed, don’t let the other parts of your look: footwear, accessories or makeup hog the limelight. Let accessories be light, hair be pulled up and makeup be min.

According to the jewelers, the tradition of putting the circular metal is historic. Romans believed that the act connected the hearts of the bride and groom. The vein from the ring finger connects directly to heart which is the eternal symbol of love and care. Earlier, the wedding ring was a symbol of financial exchange between the marring parties but in the commercial era where both the male and female are earning, a wedding ring is an expression of one’s commitment. Earlier rings were made of leather, silver and gold, which are now being replaced by titanium, platinum and even lead. “The wedding ring is an important symbol of union and is a strong link between two persons. I discovered its power the moment I wore it. I have my husband’s name and our wedding date engraved on it and he has my name engraved on his ring,” said Margherita Marincola, a media professional and musician.

For an edgier look, go with leather: The everyday look can be replaced with the power of leather to your mundane style by opting for leather jackets, boots, skirts pants and teaming them with their appropriate counterparts. To elevate the girl-next-door image, team flowy tops with snug skinnies: You can jazz up your everyday feminine image by teaming bright flowy blouses with neutral skin-tight pants. Give a fresh twist to dresses, pair them with trainers: Wish to wear a flowy dress but not the prim and proper footwear? Go with your smart trainers instead! Throw your Adidas and Nike sneakers with printed dresses to give a fresh new twist. When in doubt, wear white: Well, they say black does not go out of style ever, but there is another color that never loses its charm: the classic white. For a dewy fresh look, go with a white statement dress and add a pair of classic metal pumps.

THE NEW ERA INSTANT MATCHMAKERS

Some may call it “too soon”, but when you find the one you want to grow old with, it is never too soon,” says Mihir. Social networking websites (SNS) have become a plausible platform to meet new people, making it easier to approach the opposite sex. “The concept of marriage earlier was a big affair which involved the meeting of two families over lunch or snacks. But now, things are moving fast and people have found newer ways to connect,” says Seema Hingorrany. For Kanika Shah, who met her husband through a social networking website five years ago, it was only a matter of

few months to know he was ‘the one’. Though, what happens when the ‘online’ person is not really the same offline? “We started having a lot of issues and in the end it didn’t work out. I realize that the fact that we didn’t get to know each other offline before we took a step forward was a mistake,” says Supriya, who found love again and is engaged to be married to someone she met. “It’s too quick to judge someone through their tweets or posts. Expectations always rise in the online world. —By Samata Joshi

“We got married two years ago. But, due to our job requirements, I and my wife are stationed in two different countries. However, the ring makes me feel my wife’s touch even when I am away from her,” said Sunil Mathur, an aeronautical engineer. “The circular shape of the ring symbolizes a promise of love, loyalty and unbroken relationship,” says Mahesh Jagwani, a jeweler. In some families, the wedding ring is passed on for generations. “My wedding ring came to me from my mother-in-law. I was thrilled and excited to know that she received the ring from her mother-in- law and so on,” said Disha Kulkarni. It is the duty of the best man or the bride’s maid to take care of the rings until they reach their destinations. Nobody c an forget the scene in the movie Four Weddings And A Funeral where Hugh Grant, the best man, forgets to carry the ring with him. - Farvi Motiwale

Selfies & YOU Selfies can reveal more than you think POSSIBLE London (IANS) Analysis of selfies can prove "very rich" as a data source, both in terms of what they could reveal about different cultures in different cities and illustrating how people wanted to be perceived, according to a data project. Using facial-recognition software and ranking the most happy as 1 and the least as 0, a team of data scientists, designers and researchers collected 152,462 Instagram pictures tagged around London's Somerset House over the period of one week, 640 of which were deemed to be selfies, the Guardian reported. London selfies were found to have a score of 0.55, compared with the average of 0.62 across Berlin, New York, Sao Paulo, Moscow and Bangkok. This means that Londoners take more glum-faced selfies than residents of other world cities. The analysis of images uploaded publicly on to Instagram in September found that the London style of selfie-taking was also one of a restrained upright pose. It found that twice as many women as men are selfie-takers in London. London men, who took selfies, tended to be older than those in other cities, averaging about 28 years old, and people of both genders favored an upright pose over a jaunty angle. Almost double the proportion of people were found to be wearing glasses in London than in the five other cities analyzed. Claire Catterall, director of exhibitions at Somerset House, where the picures and their analysis formed the part of an exhibition that explored the explosion of social media and what it reveals about modern society, said the unhappy selfie faces of Londoners should not be mistaken for being miserable but "thinking they are too cool to smile". Catterall said the selfie has now become a key piece of data to document an entire generation. "What has been fascinating about this project is to see how we now quantify ourselves through this data we produce, we push ourselves out and how this has changed the way we communicate with each other," she said. "The massive rise of the selfie just proves how visual we have become as a society. Even in the past five years it is already impacting on how we speak and communicate with each other on a person-to-person basis and that can be quite a frightening thing to consider," Catterall said.

Berries are long known to have positive effects on a person’s health. Let’s find out why these fruity wonders make for healthy eating

Resolutions Why New Year resolu tions do not last?

They’re lush, delicious and colorful and that’s what makes berries a favorite dessert fruit. It is a little known fact that berries make excellent consumption for good health. Namrata Desai, nutritionist at Abs Fitness & Wellness Club, says the common function of all berries is that they are excellent antioxidants which help in delaying the ageing of tissues and some berries are great at improving memory. She adds, “Blueberries are a rich source of vitamin K, strawberries are rich in vitamin C and cranberries help in treating urinary and gastrointestinal tract infections. Their consumption can prevent food-borne diseases as they are anti-bacterial agents. Berries also increase the production of HDL, which is good cholesterol, and bring about the oxidation of bad cholesterol, and hence are good for the heart.” She advices to eat berries as a snack and also have them with plain yoghurt. “Crushed berries combined

with flax seeds and plain yoghurt make for good protein and fiber intake. However, one must limit consumption of berries to the daytime, as their sugar/ glycemic index may cause people to gain weight if regularly consumed during the evenings, when the physical activity slows down,” Desai says. Another nutritionist, Vrushali Bani of Endurance Fitness Club, says, “Blueberries are a nutrition powerhouse. Apart from their anti-oxidation properties, they also improve night vision. Raspberries are healthy as they have low calories and low fat, are cholesterol free and high in fibre. They help fight cancer and are effective in weight loss supplements and for weight management.” — By Renuka Deshpande

Diet from January 1: The worst time to go on a diet. Party season is still on, wedding bells are ringing, vacations aren’t over and its winter season which tends to make us hungry. I understand there is no time like the present, but be realistic when you start the diet. Join a gym: We wake up in the New Year and decide it’s time to take control of the way our body is shaping up. Where we often go wrong is by taking up too much together. 50 squats, 100 lunges and non-stops ab-crunches will only leave you sore. My advice, follow a progressive workout which is specific to your body type. Take expert help. Quit alcohol: One of the most common resolutions taken only to be broken after few months. My advice, think before you drink. Make a few practical changes in your drinking pattern such as limiting the number of drinks in a week or limiting the drinks in an evening. Drink more water: We all know the benefits of water. My advice, keep water accessible, in front of your eyes and reach.

Lovemaking gets more passionate after childbirth London (IANS) Resuming sex with your partner after childbirth may be a matter of two months on an average but when passion does return to the bedroom again, it comes with a new vigour, enabling couples to enjoy the act of lovemaking more, new research suggests. A study of 1,118 couples with children showed that 94 percent said they were satisfied with their sex lives and nearly 60 percent said that it actually got better after childbirth. But new parents on an average wait for about 58 days before they resume sex with their partner, according to the study. Although most women fear that their partner would not find them attractive after childbirth, the findings of the survey conducted by Britain -based parenting site Channel Mum showed

Let’s face the truth: Most New Year resolutions do not last beyond the first couple of months. No surprises there, because, after all, we’re all human. And the very thought of denying ourselves something anything invariably makes the desire for it irresistible.

that men actually prefer their partner's post-birth figure as it is more curvy and fuller. Just 14 per cent of new mothers feel body confident after giving birth, Daily Mail reported citing the study. "Having a baby is the biggest change you can bring into a relationship, so it is wonderful to see it can bring couples closer together rather than drive them apart,” Siobhan Freegard, founder of Channel Mum, was quoted as saying. The research, however, showed that men are more keen to have sex after the wait than women. While fathers want sex twice a week on average, mothers remain content with sex just once a week.

Stop smoking: It’s every smokers dream to quit smoking ‘tomorrow’ and when the day arrives we tend to expect that self-discipline will magically take over. My advice, ask yourself whether you really want to change the habit, or you feel obligated to do so. If your heart isn’t in it, wait until a good time. As I keep saying, don’t rush into anything on an impulse or out of guilt or because a new year is upon you. Without a bit of thought, planning and preparation, nothing will last very long. And you will find, regardless of your great intentions, you will soon be revenge eating and revenge drinking and revenge smoking. New Year’s resolutions are not supposed to be punishments for “bad” behavior. Let it be a gift you give yourself. There will be a bit of discomfort, sure, but that is a part of necessary transition. —By Kinita Kadakia Patel

YOGA, gym, aerobics, dance people are now going beyond the ‘usual’ to keep themselves mentally and physically fit. Well, every woman wants to stay fit, healthy and look sexy. But many don’t understand the right work out routine for their age. Read on to know more.. By Shilpa Bansal

Health Watch Here is a simple formula, to safe guard your health during the winter season. !!

Be it a college student, working professional or a home-maker; there is no doubt that women today are becoming very health conscious and understand that they have to workout regularly to stay fit. But women in different age groups need to follow a routine that is specific to them says Chandra Gopalan, director, Contours Fitness Studio. “Exercise is an activity that gets your heart pumping, expands your lungs and burns calories.

Exercises for teens

The cold nip of winter is in the air and that's the sign to start taking some extra care of your health. Your body's reaction to the change in weather, the considerably lower temperatures from 8.00 p.m. to 8.00 a.m., the heavy winds that lash it while going to work and returning home, make it essential to take a few precautions

Teens have to focus on body shaping and body sculpting exercises. These exercises are done after 20-30 minutes of cardio activity on cardio machines like tread mills, cross trainers and stationery bikes. Body shaping exercises isolate a muscle and work on it. This not only strengthens the muscle but also reduces inches in the area to give it a great shape.

Add to this scenario a few aggravating factors like pollution, stress combined with lack of sleep and you have the perfect crisis in the making if one is careless. Here is a simple formula, to safeguard your health during the winter season. Step one, cover up. A warm jacket or sweater with a muffler to cover the throat and ears if necessary are ideal.

Exercise can be divided into light, moderate and vigorous. Light exercise is any activity that does not get you out of breath. Moderate exercise are activities like brisk walking, moderate cycling or jogging that makes you feel slightly out of breath, but you can still carry on a conversation. There are a few people who may not be able to do it comfortably. Vigorous exercise burns the most calories and is the most strenuous. Vigorous activities include running or weight training. Hence, every women in any age group can perform some level of exercise,” says Chandra, who also suggests a few workout routines for these women.

Women in this group are more focused on fitness and health. Circuit training is a great form of exercise as it combines strength training with cardio activities. As we age, we lose muscle mass, hence strength training is very essential to restore the lean muscle mass. This is instrumental in boosting the slowing metabolism.

Exercises for middle-aged women

Exercises for older women Women here need to focus on health. Exercise helps normalize blood pressure, sugar levels, helps overcome arthritis and osteoporosis. It is a great stress buster and helps them overcome depression, which is prevalent at an older age. Light cardio and strength training are recommended.

People who frequently use emojis have sex on their mind

New York (IANS) Are you obsessed with sending emoji icons with every WhatsApp message or Facebook post? Check if sex is on your mind 24/7. According to an interesting survey, people who think about sex several times a day also use emoji icons the

DESI EXPRESS NEWSPAPER

most often. Conducted by online dating website Match.com, the researchers found that something as innocuous as a food item emoji icon can be employed to denote body parts or sex, medicaldaily.com reported. “[Emoji users] want to give their texts more personality. Emoji users don’t just have more sex, they go on more dates and they are two times more likely to get married,” Helen Fisher, who led the survey told Time Magazine. The survey involving 5,000 people found that 36-40 percent of people who think about sex several times a day use more than one emoji in every text.

Analysing more than nine million tweets to figure out which sexually charged emojis and emoji combinations were most popular in the US and Europe, DrEd.com found that the most popular emoji was the smiley face with heart eyes, an image that's more romantic than sexual. DrEd.com compiled the most sexually suggestive emojis on Twitter, broken down by gender. In the US, the eggplant was used about twice as much as the banana. In Europe, though, the reverse was true. In both regions, women preferred the banana, while men preferred the thicker eggplant.

Increase your intake of liquids, take hot soup for breakfast, stick to hot tea with ginger to ward off the air-conditioning during extended meetings and end the day with a mug of hot milk. Avoid heavy meals, fried oily food and inherently cold items like curd, fruits like banana and watermelon, etc. Be sure to warm up before you exercise or even walk. Keep in mind that winter is tough on skin. Dry, itchy, unhealthy skin can be a major nuisance and also affect your looks. Choose a thicker cold cream for the colder months. Don't neglect sunscreen either. It may be freezing cold but the sun is still present and there is still the potential to damage your skin by leaving it unprotected from the sun. Cold wind can be damaging to the delicate skin on lips, so be sure to protect them with a quality lip balm to keep them from drying out and potentially cracking and bleeding. Also be sure to take care of your nails and cuticles. Going for a walk is always a great way to get yourself in motion. It doesn't matter if it is a slow leisurely walk or a brisk one you will get benefits from walking and being active. If you like to be active in the garden in the summer then there is no reason why you should stop just because the temperature drops. A great idea to keeping active in winter is to plant a winter garden. Above all, keep yourself active, try and eat your dinner earlier and moisturize your skin adequately. That's the perfect recipe for getting through the winter season safely in good health. — By Vijay Pandya

PHILIPPINES BEAUTY CROWNED MISS UNIVERSE 2015 AFTER BOTCH BY STEVE HARVEY Las Vegas (IANS) Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines was crowned Miss Universe 2015, but only after some stage drama. The ceremony's host Steve Harvey mistakenly mixed up the winners' names at the event, where India failed to clinch the title for the 15th straight year. The top three contestants included beauties from the Philippines, Colombia and the US, who beat others in rounds like national costume, swimsuit and evening wear. Earlier while announcing the results, Miss US Olivia Jordan was placed third and Wurtzbach was announced as the first runner-up.

As a result, there was a mix up in the crowning ceremony too. It could have been two Miss Universe titles in a row for Colombia but soon after Guiterrez took her first walk as the winner, the host admitted to have made a mistake in announcing the winners. Vega then returned to the stage, took away the crown from Guiterrez and placed it on the head of Wurtzbach, who looked equally shocked as others. "I will take the responsibility for this. It's on the card. Don't hold it against the ladies. Still a great night," Harvey told the audience.
