The house has no furnace, no air conditioner and no hot water heater but has the ability to melt the snow right off the driveway, reported the www.nj.com. Using the powers of nature to fight the snow, the Parikh family developed a geothermal snowmelt system that warms water to about 100 degrees using solar collectors and geothermal pumps. That water is piped underneath the driveway and walkways.
The Parikhs use the sun and the ground to heat and cool the house as well. During the winter, the house intakes air warmed by the sun and carries it 12 feet underground to be heated by the ground before piping it inside. “By capturing the sun's warmth during the day, and by utilizing 2 ground source (geothermal) heat pumps and our proprietary heat exchange system, our snowmelt system keeps the driveway shovelled even on blizzard day,” Asit wrote on Facebook, expressing his happiness over the success of the system.

67TH REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATIONS AT THE CONSULATE GENERAL OF INDIA, ATLANTA.
To the shock of the Indian American community, a US judge has acquitted an Alabama police officer who slammed a visiting Indian grandfather to the ground while taking a walk outside his son’s home. Federal Judge Madeline Hughes Haikala threw out the case against Madison Police officer Eric Parker, who faced up to 10 years in prison for using excessive force against 57-year-old Sureshbhai Patel down in February last year, Al.com reported.
Parker twice testified that he lost his balance and fell. He also testified that Patel repeatedly jerked his hand away from Parker. “It concerned me that he was going for that weapon I presumed he had,” testified Parker. Patel, who had just arrived from India to help care for his grandson, testified he does not speak English and did not resist. “I did not try to run away but I did go back a couple of steps to show them my house, my house,” testified Patel through an interpreter at the second trial. “They put their hands on me and I was just standing and did not move.” On the morning of February 6, a neighbor called police to complain of a “skinny black guy” who is “just kind of walking around close to the garage”. Police found Patel walking along the sidewalk. But Patel could not answer questions and the confused encounter ended with Patel in an ambulance. Cheng Tao, the neurosurgeon who operated on Patel at Huntsville Hospital, twice testified that the takedown left Patel unable to walk or grip his hands. Tao told both juries that he replaced one vertebra in Patel’s neck with a metal cylinder and plate. Parker still faces a state charge of misdemeanor assault in Limestone County. The case drew international interest prompting Governor Robert Bentley to issue a letter apologizing to Patel and to India.

It’s also worth noting that generally, minors will inherit the money either when they turn 18 or 21. If the prospect of a young adult inheriting a large sum of money causes you to pause for reflection, then you may want to consider other options. 5. Naming a beneficiary that receives government assistance. Depending on the size of your assets, the inheritance or life insurance payment may cause those on government assistance to lose their benefits. If you would like to name a beneficiary with special needs, it’s often better to set up a special needs trust that will provide assistance without jeopardizing their much needed subsidy from the government. 6. Outdated forms. Failure to keep your documents up-to-date could result in unintentionally disinheriting your loved ones. Take the time to review beneficiary designations whenever you experience life changes such as marriage, divorce, death of a spouse, or birth of children or grandchildren. Double check your spelling and make sure your financial institution has the most recent copy. The majority of these forms can be updated online and generally takes just a few minutes. 7. Naming only one beneficiary, thinking they will evenly distribute the money. In theory, this may seem like a good idea, especially if the beneficiary has good financial sense. But a beneficiary has no obligation to disseminate the funds evenly and legally, and could potentially keep all the money if he or she chooses. So rather than assuming your beneficiary will take care of all the details, it’s always best to have your intentions carefully detailed. After all, your idea of what’s fair may not be the same as your sole beneficiary. If you have experienced any of the following, it may be time to review and update your financial account forms:
Change in marital status Birth of a child or grandchild Death in the family Health problem Relocation New job or promotion There are a lot of rules, laws and considerations you should review to ensure your financial and estate plans fulfill your objectives and maximize the benefits you pass on to your heirs. Your advisor can help you protect what may be the most important thing of all: your legacy.

Why we get attracted and choose partners of similar height
London, Jan 20 (IANS) Researchers have discovered that the genes that determine our height also influence why people tend to choose partners of similar height as themselves.
DESI EXPRESS NEWSPAPER
The finding, published in the journal Genome Biology, suggests that our choice of romantic partner can be determined by genetics more than we might expect. “How we choose our partners has important biological implications for human populations. This study brings us closer to understanding the complex nature of sexual attraction and the mechanisms that drive human variation,” said lead researcher Albert Tenesa
from University of Edinburgh in Scotland. For the study, the researchers analyzed genetic information from more than 13,000 heterosexual couples. They found that 89 percent of the genetic variation that determines a person’s height also influences their height preference in a mate. By analysing the genetic information that determines a person’s height, it is possible to predict the height of that person’s partner with 13 percent accuracy, the study said.

Kriti Sanon, who comes from a modeling background recently made her Hindi film debut with 'Heropanti'. When it comes to real life, she can be described as a fuss-free dresser who loves her ganjis and denims. She shares her wardrobe secrets and beauty tips. Ganji Gal: I like wearing simple ganjis with denims. I have lots of colourful plain ganjis that I team up with tops, jackets and shirts. Apart from that often sport casual day dresses and maxi dresses. I am more comfortable in western outfits than Indian ones. But I prefer wearing sarees, Patiala salwar suits, anarkalis occasionally on pujas, weddings or festivals. My Favorites: Though I prefer wearing denims with simple T-shirts, the saree remains my most favourite outfit. I feel a saree makes a woman look beautiful and sexy at the same time. My favorite accessory is an ear cuff. It’s simple and stands out. However, the only thing I wear on a regular basis is a nice watch. In footwear, I prefer flats to heels. It can be simple chappals or pumps or sporty sneakers. Wardrobe Must Haves: According to me, the five must haves in a woman’s wardrobe are a pair of good and comfortable denims, a white T-Shirt, a black dress, a comfortable day dress and good lingerie to complement various outfits. Beauty Secrets: If you are a non vegetarian, eat fish as it’s very good for both skin and hair. Remove makeup with a good makeup remover and then wash with a mild face wash. Don’t rub shampoo on your hair. Instead put it on your scalp and massage lightly. Use a conditioner and wash your hair with cold water.

Protein Balance Lose fat, gain muscles with diet and exercise New York, Jan 28 (IANS) Canadian researchers have found new dietary regimen for losing fat while gaining muscle, an oft-debated problem for those trying to manage their weight, control calories and balance protein consumption. The study has established that it is possible to achieve both -- muscles and lose fat quickly and at the same time, the researchers, from the McMaster University in Ontatrio, Canada, said. For the study, 40 young men underwent a month of hard exercise while cutting dietary energy they would normally require by 40 percent of what they would normally require. "These guys were in rough shape, but that was part of the plan. We wanted to see how quickly we could get them into shape: Lose some fat, but still retain their muscle and improve their strength and fitness," said Stuart Phillips, a professor at McMaster. Exercise, particularly lifting weights, provides a signal for muscle to be retained even when you're in a big calorie deficit, the research, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, revealed. However, the researchers cautioned that this regimen is not for everyone. The researchers divided their subjects into two groups. Both groups went on a low calorie diet, one with higher levels of protein than the other. The higher-protein group experienced muscle gains about 2.5 pounds despite consuming insufficient energy, while the lower protein group did not add muscle. The high-protein group also lost more body fat. The results showed that the high-protein group lost about 10.5 pounds and low protein group only eight pounds.

New York (IANS) Teenagers who spend a lot of time on Facebook and Twitter irrespective of the time are more likely to suffer sleep disturbances than their peers who prefer outdoor activities with smartphones on silent mode, say researchers. "This is one of the first pieces of evidence that social media use really can impact your sleep," said lead author Jessica C Levenson, post-doctoral researcher at the University of Pittsburgh. To reach this conclusion, Levenson and her colleagues sampled 1,788 adults ages 19-32, using questionnaires to determine social media use and an established measurement system to assess sleep disturbances. The questionnaires asked about the 11 most popular social media platforms at the time: Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google Plus, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit, Tumblr, Pinterest, Vine and LinkedIn.
Good for heart: We all know that garlic is really a heart friendly component. However, green garlic also includes polysulfide which safeguards the heart from illnesses. The spring veggie also advantages the health since it consists of manganese. This mineral keeps great cholesterol levels (HDL) within the body. Fights gastro-intestinal infections: Aside from combating cold and cough, green garlic is additionally great at treating gastro-intestinal microbe infections.

Sleep on time for super metabolic health New York, Feb 2 (IANS) Women who have more regular sleep schedules, including regular bedtimes across weekdays and weekends, have improved metabolic health, says a new study. Disrupting biological timing and high bedtime variability may harm glucose metabolism and energy homeostasis -- the balance between food intake and energy expenditure, the findings revealed. "Irregular sleep schedules, including highly variable bedtimes and staying up much later than usual, are associated in midlife women with insulin resistance, which is an important indicator of metabolic health, including diabetes risk," said senior author Martica Hall, professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, US.

In addition to sleeping seven or more hours per night on a regular basis, adults should strive to maintain a consistent schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same times on weekdays and weekends, the researchers stressed. The community-based sample comprised 370 Caucasian, African American and Chinese non-shift working women between the ages of 48 and 58 years. Results show that greater variability in bedtime and greater bedtime delay were associated with higher insulin resistance, and greater bedtime advance was associated with higher body mass index (BMI), the findings, published in the journal Sleep, revealed. In prospective analyses, greater bedtime delay - for example, staying up 2 hours later than usual - also predicted an increase in insulin resistance 5 years later.
On average, the participants used social media a total of 61 minutes per day and visited various social media accounts 30 times per week. The assessment showed that nearly 30 percent of the participants had high levels of sleep disturbance. The participants who reported most frequently checking social media throughout the week had three times the likelihood of sleep disturbances, compared with those who checked least frequently. The participants who spent the most total time on social media throughout the day had twice the risk of sleep disturbance, compared to peers who spent less time on social media. "This may indicate that frequency of social media visits is a better predictor of sleep difficulty than overall time spent on social media," Levenson explained. Published online in the journal Preventive Medicine, the study indicates that physicians should consider asking young adult patients about social media habits when assessing sleep issues. Alternatively, young adults who have difficulty sleeping may subsequently use social media as a pleasurable way to pass the time when they can't fall asleep or return to sleep. "It also may be that both of these hypotheses are true. Difficulty sleeping may lead to increased use of social media, which may in turn lead to more problems sleeping," noted senior author Brian A Primack, director of Pitt's Center for Research on Media, Technology and Health. This cycle may be particularly problematic with social media because many forms involve interactive screen time that is stimulating and rewarding and, therefore, potentially detrimental to sleep, the authors pointed out.

New York (IANS) Do you tend to munch something or the other between your meals impetus for human progress across time. And yet we forget that our offspring too will even when you are not hungry? If yes, such a habit could certainly satisfy your yearn for life just as we yearned and raced for taste buds but harm your health, warns a new study.
it. If we could only internalize Khalil Gibran’s reminder that we are only a medium of delivering the next generation of our species into this world. We should not assume that our children are going to be exact replicas of us. If they were, life itself would come to a standstill!
Eat only when you are hungry for better health. In contrast to people in traditional societies, people in contemporary societies often eat not on account of hunger but because tasty food is available. The widespread advertising of such food also bombards the consumer with the temptation to eat. But the findings of the new study by David Gal from University of Illinois at Chicago suggest that it might be healthier for individuals to eat when they are moderately hungry than when they are not hungry. The individuals participating in the study were 45 undergraduate students. They were first asked to rate their level of hunger and then to consume a meal rich in carbohydrates.
To measure how the meal was impacting participants' health, participants' blood glucose levels were measured at regular intervals after they consumed the meal. Blood glucose levels tend to rise after a meal containing carbohydrates and it is generally healthier if blood glucose levels rise by a relatively small amount because elevated blood glucose is damaging to the body's cells. The results of the study showed that individuals who were moderately hungry before the meal tended to have lower blood glucose levels after consuming the meal than individuals who were not particularly hungry before consuming the meal. The study was published in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research.
As a mother, it is almost impossible for me to let my children fail as a result of their choices. In hopes of securing myself and replicating ‘me,’ I hold my children’s hands throughout the way but this is impossible! Children are not robots that can be programmed to achieve what we aspired to achieve in our own lives, to avoid the mistakes we committed in our own lives. We are who we are as a result of our doings good and bad. As a parent I must let my children embark on their journey and pick their own path irrespective of my aspirations. We must let them be who they want to be. I am not suggesting that we leave our children to their own whims. Our children come “through” us; they come through us by embodying the qualities, virtues and character that define us as a person. We ought to guide them and teach them the most important lessons of life. And then we must let go! And ‘letting go’ is the hardest part for parents, most importantly for mothers.
Trusting Life - Postive Parenting
I find it ironical that in today’s day and age, we parents follow every research in child development and apply it. Developmental psychology suggests that children should be taught independence from a very young age. So I let my toddler set up his own dinner table, put away his dishes. I expect him to change his own clothes, put on and take off his own shoes. I even expect him to put himself to sleep alone in his own room! I expect my toddler to sit quietly in one spot and behave well in the park and at restaurants so that people will applaud my parenting. All this because new parenting research tells me that doing this will mold my child into a balanced and independent individual. And the irony becomes apparent as this same toddler grows into a teenager. Then, instead of encouraging independence, my only aim in life is to curb his independence and to ensure that he is excelling in his academics and extra-curricular activities. I worry about the company he keeps and the choices he will make. I hover over him life a fly that will just not stop buzzing.
thoughts; You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow; which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far. Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness; For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable. — Khalil Gibran
What changed in the process of his growing up? The same child who was taught to be independent is now made accountable for every action and inaction! This is where the irony lies; if I have aspired for my child to be independent from a very young age then I must let him explore and learn life’s lessons independently while constantly watching and guiding him from a distance. I must believe that my child has come ‘through’ me as a solid individual with all the human values that I could possibly teach him. He is not ‘from’ me; a replica of myself! And this is the meaning of ‘trusting’ Life itself! — By Shamsha Isani
Are You Eating Because You're Emotional? Food provides our bodies with fuel, but that isn't the only reason you might eat. For many people, emotions play a strong role. For example, you might eat because you are: Happy (birthday cake!) Sad (who hasn't indulged ice cream after bad day?) Stressed (that 3 p.m. office chocolate break)
Eating for emotional reasons often leads to overeating, since you weren't hungry in the first place. An occasional binge isn’t a serious problem. If it happens all the time, you might havebinge eating disorder.
Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts. For they have their own

A BOOK REVIEW: SUCHITRA SEN “THE LEGEND AND THE ENIGMA”; AUTHOR: SHOMA A. CHATTERJI
Mumbai (IANS) Actress Aditi Rao Hydari says the experience of working with a legend like Amitabh Bachchan makes her believe in the saying that dreams do come true. "I feel foolish when someone ask me about the experience working with Mr. Bachchan. What can I say about a great actor like him? I don't have enough words to express my feelings, to say what I feel to be actually been a part of this film like 'Wazir'. Whoever wants to be a part of this industry and has a dreams, I like to tell them Dreams do come true. I know they do with this experience," she said at the film's press conference. Both barrels of her double last name are loaded with pre-Independence history, from Assam to Andhra, but as the Hyderabadi tells us, her family pedigree doesn’t mean much in Bollywood. And that’s the way Aditi Rao Hydari likes it Aditi, who was much appreciated for her portrayal in "Yeh Saali Zindagi", called herself "privileged to be around most respected people in Bollywood". "Every single moment I spent with Mr. Bachchan, Farhan, Vinod sir, Bejoy, Abhijaat was really amazing. Mr.Bachchan connects with you personally... that's something I will never forget. And he has sparkling eyes that is something I will always keep with me." Apart from "Wazir", Aditi also has an interesting upcoming project in 2016 - Sudhir Mishra's " Aur Devdas" where she plays the contemporary version of Chandramukhi and Abhishek Kapoor's "Fitoor" where she plays a younger version of Tabu's character Begum Hazrat.
Her forte was Bengali films, usually opposite Uttam Kumar, and she only appeared in a handful of Hindi films out of her 60-odd before retiring into seclusion a la Greta Garbo, but Suchitra Sen is still remembered for her classical beauty, her expressive features and dignified, understated portrayals of a range of morally complex roles. She also began acting after marriage and motherhood - a feat possibly achieved by just one more actress. Also the only one to turn down an offer from Satyajit Ray and decline the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Indian filmdom's most prestigious if it meant a public appearance when she had retired from the world, Suchitra Sen was no less enigmatic even during her 25-year-long cinematic stint. There is much on Suchitra Sen in Bengali, but not much in English save for a small (in all senses of the word) introductory biography, and studies that exist focus on her long, successful cinematic partnership with Uttam Kumar, but filling this gap is award winning film critic and journalist Shoma A. Chatterji, who had earlier penned the aforesaid profile. It was not an easy task for the writer who asks herself if it is "possible to write the life story of a person the writer has never met in flesh-and-blood, and spoken to over the telephone only twice?" as well as "how honest is it to indulge in this second hand biography?" But for Chatterji, who has the acclaimed "Paroma and Other Outsiders: The Cinema of Aparna Sen" to her credit, it was her "passion for cinema in general, and the star-persona of a legendary actress in particular" that triumphed and led her to an attempt "to present and portray Suchitra Sen from the standpoint of an avid viewer of films, a film critic and an author". Though it gets slightly academic at places, the book will appeal to not only to Suchitra Sen's fans but also students of of cinematic history and techniques as well as those who interested in films' portrayal and relation with society. Film buffs will also come to know some interesting trivia as to which film inspired Shah Rukh Khan's Baazigar". By the way, the other actress who began acting after becoming a mother was Suchitra's daughter, Moon Moon Sen!
