ONE ON ONE

Salman Khan is at the top of the Bollywood game with back-toback hits to his credit, but he says an actor’s life comes with “different challenges.” With a brigade of young actors proving their mettle in the film industry every Friday, the superstar says he is now faced with the challenge of being “better than the juniors”. “The challenges (of our profession) changes with time. So at every given point it’s going to change. Initially, our journey was to be better than the seniors. Today, our journey is to be better than the juniors! We thought that was difficult, but today at our age, to be as fit and to be as agile as the juniors, is ten times more difficult,” added Salman, who is now also backing new talent. He is introducing actors Aditya Pancholi’s son Sooraj and Suniel Shetty’s daughter Athiya to Bollywood via his production “Hero”, a remake of Subhash Ghai’s 1983 film. Salman, who will also be seen hosting reality TV show “Bigg Boss 9″ later this year, shares a close relationship with Sooraj and Athiya. “They call me Salman sir, but it doesn’t mean that I’m a teacher. I’m their elder brother, who is only getting younger,” quipped the actor, whose own journey in filmdom began with “Biwi Ho To Aisi” in 1988, and who came into spotlight following his act as Prem in the endearing love saga “Maine Pyar Kiya” in 1989. Having essayed multiple action, romantic and comedy roles, in the past few years, Salman has hit the bull’s eye at the box office with projects like “Dabangg”, “Kick”, “Ek Tha Tiger” and his last release “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”. Competition, Salman said, has always been part of the film business. “There was always a number game (in terms of box office collections). Earlier it was in weeks, today it is in days and in numbers. The challenge whether your next film will be better than your last film or whose film is going to do better, will always be there… and it will make you work hard,” he said. Salman, who has “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” and “Sultan” in his kitty, added that all the emerging actors will also “face the same challenge some day”.

BEAUTY SECRETS

USE PRODUCTS THAT SUIT YOUR SKIN Kajol, who has combination skin, like most Indian women, was using Olay products, long before she became the brand's ambassador, simply because it "suited her". Have you found something that suits your skin yet? EAT HEALTHY "You have to figure diet into your beauty regimen", insists the part-Bengali, part Maharashtrian, living in a Punjabi household, who is unlikely to turn vegetarian despite all its proclaimed benefits. GET SOME SLEEP While most of us wind down from a hectic day by whiling away our time watching TV into the wee hours of the morning, we have to admire the discipline of someone who sleeps, "at least 8-10 hours a day, mostly 10". WATER WORKS We know the water rule, but do we follow it? Kajol does. "I ensure that I drink at least 8 glasses of water a day," she states for the record. WORK OUT In Kajol's words, "The gym is my sacred space. I weight train for between an hour to an-hour-and a-half everyday. I take a day off when I don't feel like working out, not because it's a Sunday or a holiday". REMOVE MAKE-UP We know that she's definitely not following the 'sleep-in make-up' trend, when she insists, "Do not go to sleep with your make up on; this is a very big no-no". Kajol shares her thoughts … …….While most people believe Indian women are more likely than women in other countries to put themselves last, according to Kajol, this is a global phenomenon. She emphasizes, "Somewhere down the line, women undervalue themselves; be it in a family or in a work environment. Whether you're looking at America or India, women everywhere, tend to put themselves last; especially once they are married and have a family. I definitely think that women should realize their importance in society." 16

Beauty is a point of view, not her straight nose and fabulous lips: Kajol voices the "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder" cliché, going on to elaborate, "I truly believe beauty is a person's point of view. A lot of people are amazingly beautiful on the inside; when that confidence shines through on their faces; it's like 'Oh My God! I don't know what is it about this woman'. She's so attractive and it can't be her straight nose and fabulous lips. It has to be something beyond that. It's the expression in the person's eyes; the way a smile lights up her face; the way she looks at you; the way you react to her that makes you say... she's just fab!" Every woman is Superwoman: Kajol, you just have to recognize that about yourself.. She says, "Nobody is perfect. Neither am I.” FOR ADVERTISING CALL 404-246-3256

FASHION TRENDS

Sonam Kapoor is a fashion icon who hits it out of the park with every single outfit can never be up for debate. Her effortless style, love for experimentation, and inimitable je ne sais quoi is the stuff sartorial legends are made of. We have decoded her style down to 10 habits that every fashion fanatic ought to follow for a winning look!

1. Power dressing and pant suits go hand-in-hand Nothing screams boss lady like a pantsuit. Follow Kapoor’s lead and oscillate between monochrome, pinstripes and fussfree prints for maximum impact.

6.

2.

7.

A jacket draped over your shoulders is always on point Be it a sheer bolero over your sari, a lace cardigan over a summer dress or a silk coat over your couture number, this ingenious styling tip promises instant insouciance.

3.

Up your hair game

Ruffling up a storm with your tresses is the key to take a look from run-of-themill to va-va-voom. Think messy buns, fierce ponytails and everything in between.

4.

Say yes to the Sari 2.0

Take a leaf from the style icon’s book and give age-old silhouettes a modern-day update. Spice up your sari with a sheer cape, cropped blazer or embellished floor -length jacket.

5.

Don’t underestimate the power of accessories Whether it’s bling by her mom Sunita Kapoor or her trusty Suhani Pittie stunners, the actress doesn’t shy away from look-at-me baubles. A hero accessory is all you need for finishing flourish.

18

Know your body type

Use your body type to your advantage when forging your sartorial path. Kapoor knows what works for her frame, and accentuates those curves in fit-and-flare silhouettes. The LBD is a classic for a reason (a good one at that) From the derby to the red carpet, Kapoor has proven that a little black dress is always occasion-appropriate. It’s no surprise, then, that she is a self-confessed hoarder of this one-piece wardrobe wonder.

8.

Embrace your inner geek

The numerous sightings of Kapoor in her beloved cat-eyed frames begs the question—can your off-duty look really be deemed a style ‘spectacle’ without a pair of cool geek-chic glasses?

9.

Stay away from herd mentality

Bollywood’s resident fashionista knows that you can’t really stand out if you dress like everyone else. So like her, scout for new labels, experiment with offbeat silhouettes, and say yes to vintage everything.

10.

Have fun with fashion

And most importantly, playing dress up shouldn’t be a chore. As long as you’re having fun with fashion, you’re doing it right!

HEALTH & FITNESS

Slimming can’t get any easier than this! Researchers have shown that drinking 500ml of water half an-hour before eating the three main meals of the day may help you lose weight. “Just drinking a pint of water, three times a day, before your main meals may help reduce your weight,” said Helen Parretti, a lecturer at the University of Birmingham. For the study, obese adult participants were recruited from general practices and monitored over a 12-week period. Each of the participants were given a weight management consultation, where they were advised on how to adapt their lifestyle and improve their diet and levels of physical activity. While half of them (41 adults) of those recruited were asked to preload with water, the other half ( 43 adults) were advised to imagine that they had a full stomach before eating. Those in the group who were instructed to ‘preload’ with water lost, on average, 1.3 kg more than those in the control group. Those who reported preloading before all three main meals in the day reported a loss of 4.3 kg over the 12 weeks, whereas those who only preloaded once, or not at all, only lost an average of 0.8kg. “When combined with brief instructions on how to increase your amount of physical activity and on a healthy diet, this seems to help people to achieve some extra weight loss at a moderate and healthy rate. It is something that does not take much work to integrate into our busy everyday lives.” The study was published in the journal Obesity.

THE TRAVELLER

Spread across the dusty old Khajuraho town in Madhya Pradesh, its temples don’t just represent architectural finesse and stand as chronicles of time, but also contribute to a large extent to the way India is perceived by the rest of the world, as the land of the Kamasutra, although the book was written much ahead of time. As one visits these temples, one is overwhelmed by not just the exemplary Indo-Aryan medieval architecture but majorly by the bold sculptors of that time, who challenge even the present day’s world with their erotic carvings, meant for “educational” purposes, as the local tour guides term it. Mahatma Gandhi was also known to have found these images “deeply distressing” and wanted the temples cleansed of these “indecent and embarrassing” representations. Khajuraho, however, has continued to remain as the abode of these erotic carvings, which range from self-pleasuring acts to sexual orgies to bestiality. Built between the 9th and 11th centuries by the warrior kings of the Chandela dynasty, these temples today are arguably the second most visited in the country next only to the Taj Mahal. It is believed that 85 temples were built for multiple gods like Shiva, Vishnu, and other goddesses, out of which around 25 remain in different degrees of preservation across Khajuraho in groups. Their raison d’etre? To settle the differences between the different sects of Hindus, the locals say. “People are fascinated to see that Indian society was so advanced back then in the 9th century itself, which the sculptors depict through their artworks. It shows the society was open to discuss sexuality and that sex was also one of the ways to reach divinity,” said a tour. These temples are some of the very few places in the country that bear significant representation of sexual pleasures. No wonder, many foreign journalists in their articles have also termed these temples as the reason for the birth of the Kamasutra.

THE FOODIE

Go fish. Eat fish at least twice a week. Grill, bake or broil fish for great taste and avoid breaded and fried fish.

If you’re looking for a heart-healthy eating plan, the Mediterranean diet might be right for you. Eating primarily plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts. Replacing butter with healthy fats, such as olive oil. Using herbs and spices instead of salt to flavor foods. Limiting red meat to no more than a few times a month. Eating fish and poultry at least twice a week. The diet also recognizes the importance of being physically active, and enjoying meals with family and friends.

Limit red meat to no more than a few times a month. Substitute fish and poultry for red meat. When choosing red meat, make sure it's lean and keep portions small. Also avoid sausage, bacon and other high-fat, processed meats. Choose low-fat dairy. Limit higher fat dairy products, such as whole or 2 percent milk, cheese and ice cream. Switch to skim milk, fat-free yogurt and low-fat cheese.

Here are some specific steps to get you started: Eat your veggies and fruits and switch to whole grains. A variety of plant foods should make up the majority of your meals. They should be minimally processed, fresh and whole are best. Include veggies and fruits in every meal and eat them for snacks as well. Switch to whole-grain bread and cereal, and begin to eat more whole-grain rice and pasta products. Keep baby carrots, apples and bananas on hand for quick, satisfying snacks. Fruit salads are a wonderful way to eat a variety of healthy fruit. Nuts and seeds are good sources of fibre, protein and healthy fats. Keep almonds, cashews, pistachios and walnuts on hand for a quick snack. Choose natural peanut butter, rather than the kind with hydrogenated fat added. Try blended sesame seeds as a dip or spread for bread. Avoid the butter and margarine. Try olive or canola oil as a healthy replacement for butter or margarine. Lightly drizzle it over vegetables or cook them in limited oil. Spice it up with herbs . These make food tasty and can be used instead of salt. 26

SPOTLIGHT New Delhi (IANS) Widely known for creating ensembles that are not only rooted in Indian culture, but also accentuate feminism even if draped in the simplest way, ace designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee says he will continue to celebrate the beauty of the human body through his work by making "beautiful garments".

All women really want is to look feminine, beautiful: Sabyasachi Mukherjee (Interview) "I have always stuck to one theory that different kinds of silhouettes and trends might come and go, but what women really want is to look feminine, beautiful and glamorous." Citing the example of international designer Valentino, he added: "Year after year, that brand has made business out of women who look very beautifull and pretty in almost a very straight forward way. And right now that has been accepted by editors worldwide in mainstream fashion. Mukherjee said on the sidelines of Amazon India Couture Week

"I have never understood the need to create an an antithesis of beauty to keep our brand relevant. I would continue to make beautiful garments whether couture or ready-to-wear to celebrate the human body...(clothes) that celebrate women body and make them look beautiful." Mukherjee’s sartorial creations, marked by traditional fabrics and techniques, have made him a globally recognized name in the world of design. And as the opening designer of AICW, he created the same magic on ramp. “There has always been no fabric involved in this collection. Everything has been hand embroidered and tooled to create fabrics. Everything, from the lining to the under-linings to the shell fabrics, every square inch of it has been hand embroidered and an average garment has taken about 365 man hours of labor,” the designer said. That itself is the essence of couture.

He has also styled for some of the popular Bollywood actresses, including Vidya Balan, Tabu, Rani Mukerji, Shabana Azmi, Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita Sen and Kareena Kapoor Khan. Among the current crop of Bollywood’s ladies, he has got patrons in Deepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut, and among international actresses Renee Zellweger and Reese Witherspoon have sported his label. Asked how he plans to take the brand ahead with same uniqueness, he promises not to disappoint. “I think over the years as I am growing up and the brand is becoming little more mature in terms of its market relevance and experience, I think we are striving more and more to make women's wear more luxurious, opulent yet at the same time not lose the sense of quirk that we as the brand stood for,” he said.

— By Nivedita

“I think the first word that I would attribute to the making of couture garment is the audacity and the scale because what is very important in making a couture garment is to make sure that you make something that is so exotic that it is hard to replicate. “Also, couture stands for things that are not readily available in the local market so in terms of man hours, a couture garment should be very detailed and it should take a lot of time to make because time is the essence of luxury in the modern world.” Mukherjee, who started his label ‘Sabyasachi’ in 1999, earned the distinction of being one of the few names in the history of Indian fashion to participate at fashion weeks in Milan, New York and London.

DIGITAL INDIA

San Jose (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the 21st century belongs to India and the world has begun to acknowledge the fact, as he addressed an 18,000-strong cheering crowd of Indian community members at the SAP Centre. Modi, in an over hour-long address to a "Modi, Modi chanting crowd, also said that terrorism and climate change are the main challenges facing the world and urged all nations to unite in facing the twin threats. In a rock star reception like the one he had received at Madison Square Garden last year, Modi also asked the crowd for a "certificate" of his performance in the 16 months he has been in power. He said the world now acknowledges that the 21st century belongs to India, to loud cheers. “Sometime ago India was striving to join with the world, but today the times have changed and the world is thirsting to join with India," he said. He also said he will give his every moment and every particle of his body in working for India's betterment. Asking the crowd for a certificate of his 16 months in power, Modi asked the rapturous crowd: "Did I live up to my promises, working day and night, and the responsibility that I have undertaken...Have I lived up to that?" to loud cheers and chants of "Modi, Modi". Modi, who said he was visiting the West Coast after 25 years, said he was seeing a "vibrant picture" of India in the large Indian tech community that lives and works here. Modi praised the "nimble fingers" of the Indian tech experts who "have made the world acknowledge India" with their competence, innovations. He said he did not see the large numbers of Indians working in the US and other foreign countries as a brain drain, but as a "brain deposit". Modi called terrorism and global warming as world's main challenges and asked all nations to unite to fight this scourge as there was no such thing as good or bad terrorism. "The world has to realize that terrorism can hit anyone at anyplace, and it is the world's responsibility to

recognize it and unite against terrorism," he said. Hoping that in its 70th anniversary year, the United Nations would be able to define terrorism, Modi said: "We cannot safeguard humanity if we do not come to an agreement on what constitutes terrorism." "Terrorism is terrorism, there can be no differentiation between good and bad terror," he said. Modi said he has written to the countries that the UN should decide on what constitutes terrorism, and who are the outfits perpetrating terror, and which are the countries supporting terror and those who are for humanity. Mod also said he was trying to include space technology in the work of the government, and that after his persuasion 170 government departments are using space technology for connectivity and for providing easier governance. He also outlined his government's JAM initiative - J for Jan Dhan financial inclusion program, A for Aadhar unique identity card and M for Mobile governance. He said the linking of the three would help eradicate corruption in the system. In a dig at the previous Congress-led governments, he said that after coming to power he directed his officials to take the banks to the poorest sections of the people. "I said that we have made merry for 40 years, now it is time to work." He said the Jan Dhan Yojana had resulted in Rs.32,000 crore being put in the banks by the poor and rural populace. He said linking the Aadhar card, with its biometric identification, with the Jan Dhan account in the case of gas cylinder subsidy had helped eliminate corruption in the scheme. He also touched on skill development, Beti Bacho, Beti Padhao, and the soil health card, and neem coating for urea to help farmers. Modi announced a thrice weekly Air India flight from New Delhi to San Francisco from December 2. Modi also paid tribute to freedom fighter Bhagat Singh on his birth anniversary and asked the crowd to join in. Linking with the Diaspora comprises an important facet of Modi's foreign visits. San Jose (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi couldn't have secured a better endorsement for his "Digital India" initiative, as chief executives of some of the top global tech firms like Apple, Google, Microsoft and Qualcomm announced significant plans for India. This was during the prime minister's meetings with Apple chief executive Tim Cook, MicroSoft's Satya Nadella, Google's Sundar Pichai, Qualcomm's Paul Jacobs, Cisco's John Chambers, Adobe's Shantanu Narayen and TiE's Venk Shukla. They also joined him later for "Digital India" dinner. "I see technology as a means to empower and as a tool that bridges the distance between hope and opportunity," Modi said at the dinner engagement to conclude what was a packed day here, having arrived in the morning from New York. "Social media is reducing social barriers. It connects people on the strength of human values, not identities," said the prime minister, an avid user of the medium himself including his penchant for selfies with his hosts and guests. "Face book, Twitter, Instagram, they are the new neighborhoods of our new world," he said. MONEYWISE You must keep records to prove the amount of any cash and noncash contributions you make during the year. Which records you must keep depends on the amount you contribute and whether they are cash or property contributions. New recordkeeping requirements were established for all contributions made after January 1, 2007. You cannot deduct a cash contribution, regardless of the amount, unless you keep as a record of the contribution, bank records (such as a cancelled check or bank statement containing the name of the charity, date and the amount) or a written communication from the charity. This article discusses which records you must keep. Cash Contributions Cash contributions include those paid by cash, check, electronic funds transfer, debit card, credit card, or payroll deduction. You cannot deduct a cash contribution, regardless of the amount, unless it is substantiated by one of the following: 1. A bank record that shows the name of the qualified organization, the date of the contribution, and the amount of the contribution. Bank records may include: a canceled check, a bank or credit union statement or a credit card statement. 2. A receipt (or letter or other written communication) from the qualified organization showing the name of the organization, the date of the contribution, and the amount of contribution. 3. Payroll deduction records. The payroll records must include a pay stub, Form W-2 or other document furnished by the employer that shows the date and the amount of the contribution, and a pledge card or other document prepared by or for the qualified organization with the name of organization. Cash Contributions of $250 or More: You can claim a deduction for a contribution of $250 or more only if you have an acknowledgement of your contribution from the qualified organization or certain payroll deduction records. If you made more than one contribution of $250 or more, you must have either a separate AFZAL MITHWANI CPA, EA, PFS (P) 770-817-7000 (Q) 770-817-7001 afzal@univisioncpa.com

acknowledgment for each or one acknowledgment that lists each contribution and the date of each contribution and shows your total contributions. To determine whether a contribution is $250 or more, do not combine separate contributions. e.g. if you gave to the church $25 each week, your weekly payments do not need to be combined. Each payment is a separate contribution. The acknowledgment must be written and state whether you received any goods or services in return. If something was received in return, a description and good faith estimate of the value of the goods or services must be included. For payroll deductions, the payroll records must include a pay stub, Form W-2 or other document furnished by the employer that shows the date and the amount of the contribution, and a pledge card or other document prepared by or for the qualified organization that shows the name of the organization. If the pay stub, Form W-2, pledge card, or other document does not show the date of the contribution, you must also have another document that does show the date of the contribution. Noncash Contributions For a contribution not made in cash, these general rules apply: The records you must keep depends on whether your deduction for the contribution is: 1. Less Than $250 2. At least $250 but not more than $500, 3. Over $500 but not more than $5,000, or 4. Over $5,000

Amount of contribution. In figuring whether your contribution is $500 or more, combine separate contributions of similar items during the year. If you received goods or services in return, reduce your contribution by the value of those goods or services. If you figure your deduction by reducing the fair market value of the donated property by its appreciation, your contribution is the reduced amount. Deductions of Less Than $250 If you make any noncash contribution, you must get and keep a receipt from the charitable organization showing: 1. The name of charitable organization, 2. A letter or other written communication from the charitable organization acknowledging receipt of the contribution and containing the information in (1), (2), and (3) will serve as a receipt. You are not required to have a receipt where it is impractical to get one (for example if you leave property at a charity's unattended drop site). Additional records. IMMIGRATION

With the issuance of the October 2015 Visa Bulletin, the U.S. Department of State (“DOS”) has changed the visa filing timelines for employment and family-based immigrant visa applications.

Consequences for Employment – Based Cases The upcoming October Visa Bulletin creates a two-tier system of visa priority dates, effectively allowing more individuals (especially individuals from over-subscribed countries like India and China) to file employment-based I-485 Adjustment of Status applications sooner than originally expected. The new two-tier system now includes (1) “Dates for Filing Applications,” or the dates when applicants may first file an application for Adjustment of Status, and (2) “Application Final Action Dates,” or the dates when the actual immigrant visas or “green cards” will likely be issued. Foreign nationals in the United States who are eligible to apply for adjustment of status stand to benefit from this change. To be clear, the immediate effect of the revisions to the Visa Bulletin will only be to allow certain individuals to file certain I-485 applications sooner than they otherwise could-it does not mean that they will be issued an immigrant visa or “green card” any faster. Even though the I-485 application will not be approved until the Application Final Action Date becomes current, the ability to file the I-485 application presents the following advantages for individuals born in countries facing priority date retrogression like China and India: 1. The principal applicant can obtain work authorization (Employment Authorization Document) and travel permit (Advance Parole) 2. Family members can also obtain work authorization (Employment Authorization Document) and travel permit (Advance Parole) 3. After 180 days of filing the I-485 application, the principal applicant will generally become eligible to avail of the portability provisions in the American Competitiveness in the Twenty-First Century Act (AC21). Employment-Based EB2 category

Except for India and China, the EB2 category for all countries of chargeability is current in both charts in the October visa bulletin. For EB2 India, the application final action cutoff date is May 1, 2005. However the application filing cutoff date is July 1, 2011. For EB2 China, the application final action cutoff date is January 1, 2012. The EB2 China application filing cutoff date is May 1, 2014.

Consequences for Family-Based Preference Cases The two-category system of priority dates applies to familybased petitions as well. This measure will be of help for beneficiaries of family-based cases that are in the United States in some other status and eligible for I-485 filing.

Frequently Asked Questions The two-category system of visa priority dates presents some interesting questions. For example, Can an employee file an I-485 application based on the I-140 approval notice from a previous employer? The answer is that it would depend on whether the job offer with the previous employer is still valid. We recommend that all I-485 applications based on the application date being current be filed with an original signed letter from the I-140 petitioner-employer confirming that the job offer is still valid. Second, are medical reports required to be filed with the I-485 application? It is logical to think that medical reports may not be required since they expire within a year and the I-485 applications are not expected to be adjudicated immediately. In the past we are awaiting further clarifications from the USCIS. Apart from the above, note that we always recommend that individuals maintain their non-immigrant visa status (H-1B, L-1, etc.) at all times, until they acquire permanent resident status. This is because Employment Authorization Document (EAD) and Advance Parole (AP) benefits are automatically terminated if the I-485 application is denied for any reason. Another benefit of continuing to be in H-1B or L status is that applicants in H/L status do not have to worry about abandoning the I-485 filing even if they depart the U.S. without Advance Parole. The other question frequently asked by client is “If I file my I-485 application, do I have to use my EAD anAP”? The answer is “No”. Applicants can file to obtain EAD and AP, but they don’t have to use it. They can continue to be in H or L status. Applicants can use the Advance Parole to reenter the United States, and continue working for the H-1B employer in H-1B status, provided H-1B extensions are timely done. Also note that even if the derivative spouse decides to use the EAD, it does not affect the H-1B status of the principal applicant.

Employment-Based EB3 category

For both EB3 worldwide and EB3 Mexico, the cutoff date for application final action is August 15, 2015, while the application filing cutoff date is September 1, 2015. EB3 China's application final action cutoff date is October 15, 2011 and the application filing cutoff date is October 1, 2013. For EB3 India, the application final action cutoff date is March 8, 2004, and the application filing cutoff date is July 1, 2005.
