ONE ON ONE

New Delhi (IANS) Since his debut with “Phool Aur Kaante” in 1991, Ajay Devgn has lived a multifaceted life of an actor, producer, director and writer. But he says he likes being “behind the camera” because he has been there since childhood, courtesy his father and stunt choreographer Veeru Devgan. “Shivaay” marks the 46-year-old's return to the director’s chair after 2008 film “U Me Aur Hum”. The film has been in news for reasons other than this too! His film, Nishikant Kamat's directorial Drishyam” is a remake of the Malayalam film of the same name. Asked what can be expected this time from him, Ajay said: “Hopefully something different, because ‘Drishyam’ is about the character of a common man who has got a lot of shades. He shows a visual which is deceptive and manages to practically con the whole police force. "I’ve not seen the Malayalam film. This is my take of the character because Mohanlal is a fabulous actor and I didn’t want to get into his shoes." Considering that the multi-lingual drama "Baahubali - The Beginning" has broken film records in the country, is Bollywood facing stiff competition from southern cinema? “Not really," said Ajay, and added: "I don’t understand why we divide south and north as it's one film industry and one country. Remake of south films have been made in Bollywood. But it’s not a one side thing as in south also we have had remakes of Bollywood films. So it’s a nice exchange of literature." But when he looks back, he says: "I don’t even realize that it’s been 25 years. Good times fly too fast and today also I feel like I just started yesterday. My journey has been fabulous and so smooth that I haven’t realized it at all.”

BEAUTY SECRETS

What's in your make-up bag? A concealer, MAC Studio Fix, a blusher and a lip balm. Describe your skincare routine I am particular about cleansing, toning and moisturizing my skin. I avoid getting facials but since my skin is sensitive I do occasionally get clean-ups done. I've heard honey applied on the face works as an anti-bacterial. What's your go-to beauty look for a red carpet event? I like retro old Hollywood looks. Red carpet for me is retro hair and red lipstick and winged eyeliner. I feel I should try something else but keep coming back to this style. I think this look goes with gowns and the whole glamorous feel. What do you think is sexy, beauty-wise? Good, glowing healthy skin is sexy. Good hair shows your inner health it shows on your face. Any idols growing up? I used to love Sridevi. When I was a child I used to dance on her Hawa Hawai song. What are some tips you've taken from beauty artists and use daily? A beauty artist told me putting on make-up takes close to an hour and most women just wash it off in five minutes. He told me one should properly wipe the make-up off and then use a toner and a moisturizer and an eye cream. It should take at least 10-15 minutes to remove make-up patiently. That really helped me, as my skin was really bad initially. You need to spend some time to take your make-up off. What's the weirdest thing you've tried in the name of beauty? Lip plumper's – those injection types. I had an accident as a child and had a band of fibrosis on my lips and 16

DESI EXPRESS MAGAZINE

someone suggested I use lip fillers. But my skin reacted badly to it. What product do you turn to for a beauty boost? I like to stay healthy and use organic products. I occasionally use Fabindia shampoos. Do you gravitate toward a lip color and if so, which shade? Yes, I like nude lip colors from fresh pink to pale tones. I also like ox blood colors. What's the best beauty advice you've received? That you should not use soap on your face. Clean instead with a soap-free cleanser. When you use soap, it strips off all the oil from your skin which in turn makes the skin release too much oil. FOR ADVERTISING CALL 404-246-3256

FASHION TRENDS

Neha Dhupia talks about what makes her tick as one of the best dressed Bollywood Celebrities 1.

What is your idea of style? Your personal style?

I love to wear what I feel comfortable in. I like to dress according to the occasion and I first choose the shoes that I want to wear and then dress up accordingly.

2.

Your first fashionable outfit/accessory you wore?

My first accessory ever has to be the gold balis gifted by my mom. Not only did they make me look pretty, they also had an emotional value that made them special. I still have the pair with me.

3. In your wardrobe, what is the one fashionable outfit/accessory you cannot do without? I just can’t do without a big dial watch. I love to hoard as many watches as I can. I feel a big dial, chrome, black or white or can add oomph to dull and not happening look. 4.

Have you ever mixed and matched trends?

I am not a very fusion kind of person. But I love to mix and match my accessories. I love to add spirit to my look with my accessories. If I’m wearing a heavily embroidered dress I will just wear long earrings and a chunky watch.

5.

Name one trend that you just don’t understand?

One thing I don’t understand at all is hipster style pants that look absolutely weird and highlights the butt in a not-so-sexy manner.

6.

A celebrity whose fashion sense you admire?

I love Audrey Hepburn for her classic style. And in India it is Sonam Kapoor as she carries herself very well be it in Indian wear or western vintage outfits.

7.

People follow celebs. Where do you, as a celeb, get your fashion tips from? I don’t follow any fashion trends. Whatever I wear is as per my frame of mind or what I feel on a particular day. I love to watch work done by designer friends

Eating healthy can be a challenge especially when option all purpose flour can be replaced with whole wheat you want to lose weight but are not sure about or multigrain what is a healthier option that will contribute ROTI VS RICE to your weight loss. We got Rakhee Todankar, a nutritionist at Gold's Gym, to help you make 1 Wheat Roti (50 gm) 120 cal - 1 cup of cooked White Rice (150 gm) 170 cal the right choice between popular food items.

DHOKLA VS IDLI Dhokla (2 pcs) 80 cal - Idli (2 pcs) 150 cal Dhokla and idli both are equally healthy. While the former is made with gram flour (besan) and subsequently steamed, the latter goes through a fermentation process, which increases the bioavailability of proteins and enhances the vitamin B content of the food. As it is steamed, fat content is low and it is easily digestible. Dhokla has a low glycemic index (it releases glucose at a more sustained rate) which makes it good for diabetics. Due to lower glycemic index, and calorie count, besan is often used as a low calorie food for those trying to lose weight. Since besan does not contain gluten, it is a great substitute to wheat for those people who are allergic to gluten. Use of dal and rice in idli is a good combination as the amino acids in them complement each other. Both can be made healthier by adding different veggies and pulses in it.

PITA BREAD VS REGULAR BREAD Pita Bread (100gm) 266 cal - Reg. Bread (100gm) 266 cal The ingredients and nutritional value of pita bread and regular bread are essentially identical. To make it a healthier

Wheat chapati is the healthiest option because wheat rotis get slowly digested it results in a feeling of satiety for a longer time and hence it's good for weight watchers. Wheat rotis take longer time to digest which helps to maintain blood sugar levels. Rotis or chapatis made from whole wheat are low in fat and rich in fiber, hence reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer.

FRIED EGG VS FRIED FISH Fried Egg (1 pc) 160 cal - Fried Fish (2 pcs) 190 cal Egg as well as fish are healthy, both are high in protein. They contain good fats and vitamins. To make it healthier instead of frying one can make boiled egg or grilled/steamed fish.

UPMA VS POHA Upma (1 cup) 270 cal - Poha (1 cup) 270 Both are good as long as they are made in 1-2 tsp oil. THE FOODIE New Delhi (IANS) California pistachios ‐ also called the 'smiling nut' are no stranger to most foodies ‐ one of the best antioxidants and a popular ingredient in desserts. Add nutrients, not weight, with California pistachios in your sweet treats and main course, Corporate Chef Olivier Vincenot said at a live demo as he whipped up yummy deserts ...

"The unique flavor of pistachios can create wonder if adds to something else and not necessarily eaten by themselves," Vincenot said at the demo at the Foodhall at DLF Saket with collaboration of American Pistachio Growers. Not for nothing is pista ice cream something that my sweet tooth always crave for! These terribly "dil maange more" nuts taste amazingly good in roasted, salted and crushed form. The kennel is nutty, yet pleasantly unique in taste with a fruity aroma. It compliments well with almost all sweets and desserts as in pista roll and pista kulfi being the more popular ones. Chef Vincenot surprised me with his lip-smacking recipes. His innovative style and culinary magic transforms the pistachios to a mainstream must-have. The health benefits of pistachios have encouraged him to explore the nut ad infinitum. For instance, for the finger-licking appetizer - pistachio hummus - he twisted the Mediterranean dip with a pistachio touch to make it best served with lightly-flavored chips. Its mild flavor and attractive green color made it very tempting. He also served up a pistachio blancmange, a chilled dessert combined with milk. It needed to be prepared very carefully with pistachio powder to ensure that it does not turn up very thick.

For the record, a one-ounce serving of pistachios equals 49 nuts, more than any other snack nut. In addition, they contain a significant amount of potassium - 300mg - and 3g of fiber per serving. They are cholesterol free and contain just 1.5 grams of saturated fat and 12.5 grams of fat per serving, the majority of which comes from monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat. INGREDIENTS:

− 3/4 cup sugar − 4 large egg yolks − 1 cup whipping cream − 1/2 teaspoon almond extract − 3/4 cup unsalted pistachios, toasted, coarsely chopped − 1 cup unsalted shelled pistachios − 2 cups milk (do not use low‐fat or nonfat)

PREPARATION

− Finely grind 1 cup pistachios and 1/4 cup sugar in processor. Bring milk and ground pistachio mixture to boil in heavy large saucepan. Remove from heat. Mix in almond extract. − Whisk egg yolks and remaining 1/2 cup sugar in medium bowl. Gradually whisk in hot milk mixture. Return custard to saucepan. Cook over low heat until custard thickens and leaves path on back of spoon when finger is drawn across, stirring constantly, about 10 minutes (do not boil). Strain into large bowl. Chill until cold, about 2 hours. − Stir 1 cup whipping cream and chopped pistachios into custard. Process mixture in ice cream maker according to manufacturer's instructions. Transfer to container and freeze. (Ice cream can be prepared 3 days ahead.)

Ihe popular Italian-American dessert, pistachio cannoli was the other melt-in-the-mouth dish on the menu, a crispy-crunchy and divine filling of ricotta cheese and pistachio in a cylindrical cone open at both ends. 26

Lilburn, GA – August 8, 2015 – BAPS Charities, Atlanta hosted its Children’s Health & Safety Day on August 8th, 2015. The event’s theme focused on the increasing influence of media on youth lifestyle and habits, and provided them with knowledge and tools to use technology wisely. The goal of the event was to help local youth become “media smart” as they navigate what is healthy and unhealthy, ultimately getting them to “Eat, Think, and Be Active!” Highlights of the event included emergency vehicle tours, interactive workshops, and insightful presentations throughout the day. It also gave attendees the unique opportunity to participate and engage in activities as well as other fun, educational sessions that incorporate the necessity of safe and healthy lifestyle. encouraging youth to “Eat, Think, and Be Active!” The theme incorporated different learning workshops, scenario-based simulations, and motivated the youth to engage in conversations with firemen, police officers, doctors and other professionals they may have once feared. The curriculum throughout the day allowed the youth to understand how the media plays a major role in shaping their values about nutrition and physical activities. Through interactive sessions they were also encouraged to think critically and make healthy lifestyle choices. Learning while having fun with their peers, children are more likely to consider eating healthy, become more active, think critically when watching advertisements, read labels, and more. Through a close-up tour of emergency vehicles ranging from fire trucks to air EMS helicopter, the youth were also given a well-rounded overview with tips from these emergency responders. Meanwhile, parents and caretakers were in separate learning sessions to explore best practices in reinforcing and integrating many of the topics their children were getting to learn. The booths that taught children on proper dental hygiene, fire safety and seatbelt safety impressed parents. The event encouraged their whole family to live a healthier, safer, and more united lifestyle. Each family that attended walked away with a unique and personal experience, which would encourage them to generate positive habits. FOR ADVERTISING CALL 404-246-3256

On Sunday, August 16th, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Atlanta, GA honored the legacy of the late former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam with the launch of his final book and gift to mankind, Transcendence. Transcendence documents a 14-year journey between Dr. Kalam and His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the fifth spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, who carries forward a legacy of enlightened gurus that goes back to the early nineteenth century. The event was a tribute to Dr. Kalam’s lifetime of dedicated public service and varied contributions to India’s development as a country. Dr. Kalam joined the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). While serving as a project director at ISRO, he helped launch into orbit the Rohini satellite, India’s first satellite vehicle. In 1997 he received the Bharat Ratna award, which serves as the highest civilian honor. In 2002 he became the eleventh president of India, having formerly served the nation as a world-renowned missile scientist. In his tenure, and long after leaving office, he was known as the 'people's president' due to his ability to bridge the gap between India’s people and their government. Throughout his remarkable career, Dr. Kalam wrote over 30 books and is considered to be one of India’s most widely read and best-selling authors. In Transcendence, Dr. Kalam’s writings focus on the philosophical and spiritual guidance from Pramukh Swami Maharaj that shaped his purpose and direction in serving India. Most astonishing about their profound friendship is that Dr. Kalam was not conversant in Gujarati, Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s native language, and Pramukh Swami does not speak English. Despite the language barrier, they were able to transcend

communication challenges. The resulting bond, built on selfless service and sustained through common interest, was life changing for Dr. Kalam and is thoughtfully articulated in his writing. Dr. Kalam’s Transcendence explores one man’s journey to discover universal truths, unlock the science behind progress, and understand the critical role of spirituality in leading India forward. He narrates his visits to historic sites worldwide, religious and secular, while reflecting on the various moments of divinity he experiences along the way. But, as he writes, it is in the presence of Pramukh Swami Maharaj that his spirituality truly flourishes. Dr. Kalam describes Pramukh Swami Maharaj as “my ultimate teacher”. He wrote, “Pramukh Swamiji shared with me many times his wish for peace, development, security and prosperity in the world. He feels that Indian people’s kindness, openness, tolerance and willingness to engage in dialogue is inbuilt in our civilizational heritage. He firmly believes in the potential of the Indian people to co-build a harmonious world where there is permanent peace, prosperity, cooperation and a ‘win-win’ with all countries.” Commenting on Dr. Kalam’s Transcendence, special guest of honor, Josh Levs, from Atlanta, GA said, “The book is really an incredible journey. This book talks your through universal messages on how to find inner harmony and then how to use that inner harmony to project a more peaceful world around you. It’s a profound telling of this journey of His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.” Commemorating the unique friendship and mentorship between Dr. Kalam and Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the event highlighted Dr. Kalam’s final contribution to his country: His vision for a brighter India through Transcendence. MONEYWISE Tax planning is the process of looking at various tax options to determine when, whether, and how to conduct business and personal transactions to reduce or eliminate tax liability. Many small business owners ignore tax planning. They don't even think about their taxes until it's time to meet with their accountants, but tax planning is an ongoing process and good tax advice is a valuable commodity. It is to your benefit to review your income and expenses monthly and meet with your CPA or tax advisor quarterly to analyze how you can take full advantage of the provisions, credits and deductions that are legally available to you. Although tax avoidance planning is legal, tax evasion - the reduction of tax through deceit, subterfuge, or concealment - is not. Frequently what sets tax evasion apart from tax avoidance is the IRS's finding that there was fraudulent intent on the part of the business owner. The following are four of the areas the IRS examiners commonly focus on as pointing to possible fraud: 1. Failure to report substantial amounts of income such as a shareholder's failure to report dividends or a store owner's failure to report a portion of the daily business receipts. 2. Claims for fictitious or improper deductions on a return such as a sales rep's substantial overstatement of travel expenses or a taxpayer's claim of a large deduction for charitable contributions when no verification exists. 3. Accounting irregularities such as a business's failure to keep adequate records or a discrepancy between amounts reported on a corporation's return and amounts reported on its financial statements. 4. Improper allocation of income to a related taxpayer who is in a lower tax bracket such as where a corporation makes distributions to the controlling shareholder's children. Tax Planning Strategies: Countless tax planning strategies are available to small business owners. Some are aimed at the owner's individual tax situation and some at the business itself, but regardless of how simple or how complex a tax strategy is, it will be based on structuring the strategy to accomplish one or more of these often overlapping goals:

Avoiding the common tax planning mistakes In order to plan effectively, you'll need to estimate your personal and business income for the next few years. This is necessary because many tax planning strategies will save tax dollars at one income level, but will create a larger tax bill at other income levels. You will want to avoid having the "right" tax plan made "wrong" by erroneous income projections. Once you know what your approximate income will be, you can take the next step: estimating your tax bracket. The effort to come up with crystal-ball estimates may be difficult and by its very nature will be inexact. On the other hand, you should already be projecting your sales revenues, income, and cash flow for general business planning purposes. The better your estimates are, the better the odds that your tax planning efforts will succeed. Max. Business Entertainment Expenses Entertainment expenses are legitimate deductions that can lower your tax bill and save you money, provided you follow certain guidelines. In order to qualify as a deduction, business must be discussed before, during, or after the meal and the surroundings must be conducive to a business discussion. For instance, a small, quiet restaurant would be an ideal location for a business dinner. A nightclub would not. Be careful of locations that include ongoing floor shows or other distracting events that inhibit business discussions. Prime distractions are theater locations, ski trips, golf courses, sports events, and hunting trips. The IRS allows up to a 50 percent deduction on entertainment expenses, but you must keep good records and the business meal must be arranged with the purpose of conducting specific business. Bon appetite! Important Business Automobile Deductions If you use your car for business such as visiting clients or going to business meetings away

from your regular workplace you may be able to take certain deductions for the cost of operating and maintaining your vehicle. You can deduct car expenses by taking either the standard mileage rate or using actual expenses. The mileage reimbursement rates for 2015 are 57.5 cents per business mile (56 cents per mile in 2014), 14 cents per charitable mile (unchanged from 2014) and 23 cents for moving and medical miles (down from 23.5 cents per mile in 2014). If you own two cars, another way to increase deductions is to include both cars in your deductions. This works because business miles driven is determined by business use. To figure business use, divide the business miles driven by the total miles driven. This strategy can result in significant deductions. Whichever method you decide to use to take the deduction, always be sure to keep accurate records such as a mileage log and receipts. Increase Your Bottom Line When You Work At Home The home office deduction is quite possibly one of the most difficult deductions ever to come around the block. Yet, there are so many tax advantages it becomes worth the navigational trouble. Here are a few common tips for home office deductions that can make tax season significantly less traumatic for those of you with a home office. Try prominently displaying your home business phone number and address on business cards, have business guests sign a guest log book when they visit your office, deduct long-distance phone charges, keep a time and work activity log, retain receipts and paid invoices. Keeping these receipts makes it so much easier to determine percentages of deductions later on in the year. Section 179 expensing for tax year 2015 allows you to immediately deduct, rather than depreciate over time, up to $25,000, with a cap of $200,000 (down from $500,000 and $2,000,000, respectively, in 2014) worth of qualified business property that you purchase during the year. The key word is "purchase". Equipment can be new or used and includes certain software. All home office depreciable equipment meets the qualification. Some deductions can be taken whether or not you qualify for the home office deduction itself. It's never too early to meet with a tax professional to learn more about home office deductions.
