Also set for its global launch is the latest addition to the internationally acclaimed S-Series sedan motoryacht range, the stunning S55 Sedan Motor Yacht. SANCTUARY COVE: THE PREMIERE MARINE LIFESTYLE DESTINATION For more than three decades, Mulpha’s Sanctuary Cove has been a globally recognised benchmark for master-planned waterfront communities, with Sanctuary Cove Marina being at the heart of the community. The 303-berth world-class marina originally opened with euphoric optimism in 1986. In 2020, in response to the increased enquiry for
berthing of boats over 50 feet, Sanctuary Cove Marina underwent a $10 million expansion project. The investment saw the addition of four new Piers (G, H, I and J), including one pier dedicated to superyachts, and in a first to market it’s also home to the only undercover berths in Australia. Today Sanctuary Cove is home to Australia’s leading boat brands including Horizon, Princess and Maritimo, as well as a some of Australia’s finest privately owned superyachts — not to mention SCIBS, the Southern Hemisphere’s premiere boat show.
As the first InterContinental Resort to land in Australia, InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort reflects the grand, graceful architecture of a classic Queensland estate, nestled within the beautiful surrounds of Sanctuary Cove. Boasting an elegant and sophisticated design, the recently refurbished Great House welcomes you with a dramatic stained-glass window and grand staircase into the Resort. Down the Fountain Terrace stairs and surrounded by the Resort’s 4.2 hectares of lush landscaping, a show-stopping beach lagoon stretches out before you. Ideally located to balance seclusion with accessibility, the Resort unlocks unprecedented access to three championship golf courses and Sanctuary Cove Country Club, a world-class marina, the region’s famous theme parks and more.

THE OPULENT BOATING ECONOMY SCIBS has been a fixture on the marine industry calendar since 1988, showcasing an incredibly diverse range of products from highend superyachts through to trailer boats and the latest gear and gadgets. While the on- and off-water displays are enough to turn anyone into a marine enthusiast, the event is also an incredibly important economic driver for the marine industry. In 2020 Griffith University undertook an Economic Impact Study that identified the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show as generating an economic impact of $336.27 million in the region from its most recent event in 2019. SCIBS general manager Johan Hasser said the quality and stature of this year’s Show is expected to exceed that mark.
60
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2021
“To have a significant congregation of the world’s leading brands together at SCIBS is a great vote of confidence for the industry and we know visitors will be impressed by the quality and diversity of boats on display across every category,” Mr Hasser said. “There’s no doubt that 2021 is shaping up to be one of our biggest Shows, not only in terms of the sheer number of boats and the quality
of exhibitors we continue to attract, but also when looking at the expanded footprint and the number of visitors expected through the gates. “2019 was a very successful event and saw $336 million injected into the local economy. We anticipate this figure will be even higher this year as families swap the traditional summer European getaway for their own luxury watercraft.”

MODERN CLASSIC MARITIMO ARE CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVING THEIR M-SERIES, AND THE LATEST M55 IS A STUNNING EXAMPLE OF TURNING GRAND IDEAS INTO FUNCTIONAL BRILLIANCE STORY TIM VAN DUYL PHOTOS JAMES DUMERGUE AND SUPPLIED

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2021
MARITIMO M55 CLOCKWISE FROM RIGHT: The M55’s
horizontal lines create a sleek, fast look; The extended hydraulic swim platform helps create an appealing entertaining space
M
aritimo’s first M-Series yacht set the benchmark for cruising flybridges that emphasise open entertaining space and efficient running. Since their launch in the mid-2000s, the range has expanded to include hulls from 51 to 70 feet, with past models edging either side of those lengths. Throughout the years, they have constantly evolved, with tweaks to layouts and new styling. This 2021 M55 is different, though, featuring updates and inclusions that push the M-Series to a new level.
REVISED LINES The most immediate and obvious change is a welcome back of the ‘winged bridge’, as seen on the popular M60 of the mid-2000s. The flybridge deck of the M55 is around 300mm wider than the ceiling of the main deck on both flanks, creating a wing over the walkways on either side. Visually, this is a more dominant appearance. Along with this are port window designs that reflect the successful X-Series in their long, sleek look and a waistband around the flybridge’s rear deck that acts as a support for the lounge and a comfortable armrest. These two elements, in particular, add more horizontal lines to the vessel and work well with the sheerline to give a sense of speed and presence, even at the marina. The effect of the winged bridge is felt mostly inside, but before we head in, there is
one other major external update. The rear of the M55 has had a substantial design change by the way of the addition of Maritimo’s Adventure Deck. A revised layout of the rear lounge and the inclusion of a wet bar and cool store has made the most of the entertaining appeal around the cockpit and down to the swim platform. With the optional extended hydraulic swim platform (a must-have in my opinion), the space is both massive at 3.75 x 3.8m, but also inviting with a single step from the Adventure Deck to the cockpit through wide gates on both sides. A key feature of the Adventure Deck is the tender garage below. Lift the rear lounge by way of electric actuators, and you’ll find space to hold a 2.8m tender with ease. I paced out the space on the swim platform and especially with the optional extension, there is room to park a jetski, if wanted, or to short-term park the tender. Larger tender storage is also available on the foredeck.
HEADING INSIDE Step inside and you’re met by a galley complete with Miele appliances. An obvious change from other M-Series yachts instantly stands out in the form of the stairs to the bridge which lead from the bow to the stern, allowing for a massive pantry and space for optional fridge drawers and an ice maker opposite the island bench.
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2021
63
Although used heavily, the deep, dark finish of the optional walnut veneer did not overpower the area thanks to new saloon windows that stretch from the top of the lounge seats to just under the ceiling. They are simply sensational in size; I’m of the opinion you can never have too many or too big a window in a boat as the view should never be missed, but I digress. The benchtops in the galley are a marblelike solid surface, a good contrast to the walnut but also practical in use, while the deep sink will be appreciated in rolling swells. A small step up to the saloon and the view from the extra-large windows is fantastic, but equally great is their ability to slide open to allow in the cool sea-breeze. The layout is traditional with a central walkway leading to an open-air stairwell to the lower deck, a large L-shaped lounge to port, and a U-shaped lounge to starboard with a bench and hideaway TV opposite. Underfoot is a synthetic carpet that will not hold odours when wet but is still soft and warm. Overhead are LED strip lights beautifully tucked into the ceiling in such a way as to spread light across the ceiling without any eye-searing brightness. It is subtle but functional, as lighting should be.
64
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2021
The open-air stairwell has well-placed leather-bound handrails and, being open air, there is no risk of a head knocking a frame on the way down. Immediate to the bow is the VIP cabin that features another nod to the X-Series in an offset bed with no annoying steps on either side. A detail I liked is the depth of the storage underneath. If the closets won’t take everything your guests bring on board, firstly,
I’d be surprised, but if that were the case, the underbed space will more than suffice. The VIP cabin has direct access to the dayhead to port while to starboard there’s a guest cabin set up with twin singles. No doubt this can be reconfigured to a double, small gym or office as I’ve seen on other Maritimos. Follow the carpet down a second short set of steps and the full-beam Master is revealed. Featuring more than enough storage

Soft lighting and marblelike benchtops balance the walnut veneers beautifully; Entertaining made easy; Surrounded by views
space, including a full height robe and deep cupboard suitable for overflow wine storage, it is still a bright space with an open feel, larger than the 5.2m beam would suggest thanks to the oversized port windows that sensibly cannot be fully opened. A lounge and daybed complete the area with a private ensuite featuring a separate shower and toilet.
UP TOP Maritimo boats are designed for drivers, so when you traverse the stairs to the sky lounge, there is no surprise the helm is a dominant feature. What is a surprise, though, is the space gained by the extended wing design. The additional 300mm added to each side may not seem like much in writing but from experience, the Sky Lounge feels as spacious as that on the flagship M70’s I’ve sampled. The layout is closer to the M70’s than the M51, with a deep and inviting wrap around lounge beside the helm where guests can sit in the line of sight of the driver. Behind the helm is a second lounge with a small bar and hideaway TV opposite and out on the deck is spacious with a neat little wet bar included while the aforementioned waistband behind the seating works very well as an arm rest.
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2021
65
Driving the M55 from the starboard side helm is arguably as comfortable as anywhere else on the boat thanks to the superb helm seat complete with adjustable footrest and well positioned, leather clad steering wheel. Vision is fantastic thanks to narrow mullions and large windscreens and the ergonomically designed dash is a study in simple but usable design. The highlight up top has to be how the additional space allowed by the wings creates more room for friends and family to enjoy the elevated views. And, in typical Maritimo fashion, engine noise is well subdued until you give it a lot of throttle, when the experience goes up a few notches and the hull rises from the water thanks to upgraded power units from Volvo Penta.
POWERHOUSE Like all Maritimos, the engine room is impeccably laid out, with a clear line of sight to fuel water separators, fire suppression
66
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2021
systems, 17.5kW Onan genset, and, more importantly, it has the headroom to actually move about. Flanking the sides of the engine room are two green powerhouses in the Volvo Penta D13-800 MC, which are well known to me. Maritimo has been using the big six cylinder for a number of years across a number of models and, like me, they appreciate a vast and flat torque curve. Rated at 800hp, the real shining statistic is the 2900Nm of torque available from only 800rpm, which makes acceleration smooth and effortless. Their inherent straight-six balance delivers power smoothly with a nice high-pitched whine as the turbochargers come on-song, adding to the experience when you apply moderate to full-throttle. Quite a modern design, they are fuel efficient and compliant with the ever-tightening emissions standards. Volvo Penta Australia, through Maritimo, supplied fuel burn data from their rigorous predelivery testing which we verified on a blustery afternoon at Broadwater on the Gold Coast.

Against and with the tide, maximum efficiency was at or just under 1000rpm where the D13’s would burn a combined 32.5L/h for a range of about 1185 nautical miles with a 10 per cent reserve. A healthy cruise was found at 1900rpm where combined consumption was 176L/h and at WOT, the D13’s propelled the M55 up to a touch over 29 knots while consuming 293L/h. With a tail wind, there is no doubt you’ll have fun chasing 30 knots, and you’ll get there. At maximum efficiency, the M55’s range puts the Pacific Islands in reach fairly comfortably, with Noumea only four days away at nine knots from Brisbane — but is the hull up to the challenge?
THE BUILD Strength won’t be an issue, with the M55 one of a new breed of Maritimo that utilises fewer but larger and more intricate moulds and a secretive
patented bonding process between the main plugs to ensure rigidity and exact alignment. The hull itself is around 25mm thick at its thinnest and, I’m told, up to 40mm thick in critical areas such as the keel and at joins. The result is a dry weight of 27 tonnes but importantly, that weight is kept as low as possible through a clever layout. Firstly there are the shaft drives that allow for the engines’ heft to be centrally located in the hull and with a 9-degree shaft angle, the M55 features a very shallow draft of only 1.4m. The arrangement of the fuel tanks is a coup de maître, with the main tank found under the Master stateroom with two wing tanks flanking it. All three tanks are linked, allowing owners to fill up all 4550L from a single filler point. This positioning makes for a very low centre of gravity, something the team searched for and should be proud to have achieved.

Although our test boat was not fitted with one, I am a big fan of SeaKeeper gyros and on motoryachts of the past. It would be one of the first options I would suggest be selected. But with this new approach to weight distribution, I’m not sure this is needed in the M55 — which is surprisingly stable. Luckily, should you decide you do need one, the provision is there to quickly and easily have the factory drop one in after delivery. Bow entry is fine and the sheerline tall and well flared so I expect the M55 will live up to expectations and to cut into and lift cleanly through the swell. The shallow stern will lend itself to rolling with the swell as opposed to trying to run over it but we didn’t get our chance to trial the M55 that aggressively — hopefully next time.

MARITIMO M55
THE WRAP It would be fair to say I came away from my day on the M55 very impressed. I knew and appreciated the design features like the bridge wings and Adventure Deck before stepping on board. But once I had experienced them, their practicality and benefit was reinforced greatly. At the time of printing, Maritimo has an impressive problem ahead of them, with a reported record amount of order placed for the M55 and delivery dates are already stretching deep into 2022 and 2023. Expansion is well underway at the Coomera yards and the search is on for more top talent to help build them, so I wouldn’t be dissuaded from enquiring. Just be forewarned, it’s not just me that is mightily impressed, there is a line forming for what will no doubt go down as another legendary M-Series from the masters of the motoryacht.

hen the Riviera team launched its first 68SMY (SMY) in 2017, it sent a powerful message that they were building yachts that could confidently stand next to the very best in the world. The 600-strong team of designers, engineers, boat builders, shipwrights, electricians, and many other skilled individuals, had produced a model that spoke of design, fit out, quality, comfort and efficiency at a superior level by international standards, and a 72SMY followed soon after. Since then, Riviera has developed the line to include 64 and 50SMY models. In three short years, Riviera has built and delivered more than 35 of these new-generation yachts for delighted owners around the world. The yachts have crossed the seas, cruising the Pacific islands and the waters of the US, New Zealand, and the Mediterranean, as well as Australia. This is the culmination of a long and eventful journey over 40 years for Australia's largest and most awarded luxury motoryacht builder. The SMYs today make it clear that even better is yet to come as the team heads towards its 50th anniversary.
WAY BACK WHEN TOP TO BOTTOM:
The Riviera 70 Enclosed Flybridge; Riviera’s 38 MK1, launched in 1981
The Riviera story began in 1980. In a small factory in Terry Hills, in Sydney’s northern beaches, five boat builders and Bill BarryCotter began work on a new 38-foot flybridge cruiser to be launched in 1981. As they
worked there was not even a name for the business or the boat. The team soon moved to new facilities in Queensland’s Gold Coast and built eight Riviera 38 Open Flybridge boats in a year. Within two years, the first boat was exported to the United States and in 1985 Riviera first exported to Europe. Events around the world have occasionally challenged the business. The 1987 recession saw sales tumble and the ‘recession we had to have’ in the early ‘90s impacted Riviera and many other businesses, but Riviera pulled through. In 1992 Riviera opened its doors to apprentices for the first time. The program would develop over the years and in 2000, the company launched Propel, a training program to help these young people learn important life skills including confidence building, people skills, financial maturity and goal setting. In 2021 Riviera welcomed 41 new apprentices, the largest intake ever.
BUILDING A REPUTATION Sales and reputation were built primarily upon a single design concept — the flybridge boat. It was a simple formula aimed at people who enjoyed fishing and some cruising. They offered an open cockpit aft, an enclosed saloon with a forward galley, and an accommodation deck with enclosed bathrooms and the number of cabins depending on size.
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2021
75
A handful of other designs were trialled over the years, the standout being the 4000 and 3000 Offshore models in the late ‘90s. These were single-level boats also designed for fishing and cruising, but without the flybridge and with an open or three-side enclosed helm deck. While both achieved significant sales success, Riviera did not pursue this line and would not build another single-level model until 2001, when the first of the M-Series Sports Cruisers was launched. The classic flybridge design has evolved significantly over the years. A standout of the ‘90s was the 48 which was launched as an open flybridge, quickly evolved as a hardtop model before becoming Riviera’s first enclosed flybridge. It was one of the most popular, with 169 built and remaining in production from 1993 to 2004. Today, the flybridge range is represented by the 57 and
54 Enclosed and the 45, 43 and 39 Open Flybridge models. By contrast there are already four SMY models, three Sport Yachts and six SUV models, including the recently announced 645 SUV, for clients to select, as well as the classic-design Belize 54 and 66 Daybridge and Sedans — 22 individual models from 39 to 72 feet. In 2000, Riviera opened a new purposebuilt facility on 14 hectares of land at Coomera on Queensland’s Gold Coast. It brought together teams of craftspeople from across three previous facilities in the area, and further increased Riviera’s ability to innovate and meet demand.
CHANGING MANAGEMENT As new models and sales increased from the mid-'90s and beyond 2000, outside interest in the business grew. In 2002, Riviera
was purchased from Bill Barry-Cotter in a management buyout led by private equity interests. At that point, Riviera had built and sold 2197 boats across 32 models, including then by far its most successful, the Millennium design 40 Open Flybridge, which achieved sales of 288 between 2000 and 2007. That achievement would quickly be eclipsed under the new owners with the launch of the 47 Open Flybridge that, over two generations of development, sold 292 boats between 2003 and 2012. The year of the 47’s launch coincided with Riviera’s largestever year of production volume — 421 boats in 12 months, almost two boats leaving the Coomera facility every working day. The management buyout offered the team the opportunity to make a real advance in design, build quality, engineering and luxury appointments. They would look to diversify

the offerings to clients. That diversification has attracted more people to the Riviera global family of yacht owners, giving them more options as their lifestyles change. An outstanding success from this was the 51 Flybridge. Launched in 2004, Riviera built 181 boats, including an Enclosed Flybridge version that featured a design innovation that would soon permeate the flybridge models — an internal staircase to the flybridge.
NEW DIRECTIONS In 2005 Riviera unveiled a line that heralded a profound new direction for the marque, the Sport Yacht. The 3600 Sport Yacht may
have been relatively small among its peers, but she demonstrated design concepts seen throughout the Sport Yacht models to this day — single-level living, an awning window in the aft saloon bulkhead that, with a pillarless glass door, seamlessly opened the space between cockpit and saloon. There was a lounge across the transom and a cockpit table for dining. She spelled out Riviera’s on-water lifestyle of the future and was a design that would lead to the building of more than 670 Sport Yachts in the following 15 years. That year, Riviera gained a special award that acknowledged the company’s achievements in worldwide sales, the Premier of Queensland’s Exporter of the Year, a recognition that would be repeated with many export awards in following years. Another significant design shift occurred in 2008 with the launch of the 4400 Sport Yacht. It was the third in the line after the 3600 and award-winning 4700 and followed the design concept first seen in the 3600. But she had a major difference. She was the first model to reflect Riviera’s design philosophy of fitting the best engine and drive system to suit each individual model. The 4400 was designed and built specifically to incorporate Volvo Penta’s new Inboard Propulsion System (IPS), a technology that would influence Riviera design from that day forward.

77
IPS provided joystick control, offering an incredible level of manoeuvrability, particularly in tight spaces, and offered up to 30 per cent greater fuel efficiency with a superior, smooth and quiet ride. More importantly for the designers, it provided additional space on the accommodation deck as the engines were positioned further aft than traditional shaft drive systems. This brought forward the midships master cabin, a feature of all larger Rivieras today. While the large SMYs utilise shafts, Riviera has significantly refined V-drive technology that offers design flexibility to optimise weight management.
CHALLENGES AHEAD Following a successful Sydney International Boat Show in August of that year during which the company unveiled a new flagship, the 70 Enclosed Flybridge, long-time CEO Wes Moxey announced his retirement from
78

the business following a differing of visions with the private equity backers. Wes had risen quickly through the ranks at Riviera since its early days in Queensland to become General Manager, Managing Director and then, following the management buyout, CEO. By this point, the world was entering the Global Financial Crisis and by April 2009 the global boating industry was in steep decline. Riviera needed funding requirements, but as they were not forthcoming, the private equity owners placed the company into voluntary administration in early May 2009, weeks before the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. The show was the stage for the launch of one of the most distinctive motoryacht designs by Riviera up to then and was the catalyst for the Riviera owners-inspired ‘I luv Riv’ promotion. The 5800 Sport Yacht set a new standard and cemented this design concept into Riviera’s lineup, and was powered by triple Volvo Penta IPS.
FEATURE: 40 YEARS OF RIVIERA
The 5800 would evolve into the 6000 Sport Yacht which today is an extremely popular model. Between them, Riviera has so far built more than 100 of these yachts and demand today is strong.
OUT THE OTHER SIDE Riviera would remain in receivership for 34 months, during which time 289 motoryachts were sold, a significant reminder of the marque’s appeal and solid owner support. Many businesses in receivership simply hold on to what they know and attempt to
restructure out of trouble. Riviera continued to innovate, launching the 43 Open Flybridge in 2010, which brought Volvo Penta IPS into the flybridge line-up. This model remains in production. Wes Moxey may have retired from Riviera, but farm life was not enough stimulation for him and together with industry colleague Lee Dillon, he launched the Belize marque of classic-inspired motoryachts in 2011. They were barely established when Gold Coast businessman and boating enthusiast Rodney Longhurst stepped forward to purchase Riviera in May 2012 and take it
out of receivership. His first step was to invite Wes Moxey to return to the helm as CEO. The pair quickly decided that the Belize range comfortably belonged within the Riviera family. The first model launched under the fresh ownership was yet another innovation, the SUV. The designers skilfully combined the best-loved elements of the traditional flybridge models with the single-level lifestyle offered by the Sport Yacht layout. Significantly it was the first of these, the 445 SUV, that was the 5000th Riviera built. This model remains in production today. In 2013 Riviera was again recognised for its achievements with the industry body’s Large Exporter of the Year award.
RIVIERA SINCE In the following year the company launched the 50 Enclosed Flybridge, again with IPS power. This model evolved into the 52 and 54 Enclosed Flybridge. Then came the 5400 Sport Yacht, taking this design to a new level of sophistication and setting the tone for quality and innovation, coming from the computer screens of the 50 designers, engineers, shipwrights and plug builders working in New Model Development. A 4800 Sport Yacht followed in 2017.

FEATURE: 40 YEARS OF RIVIERA The 68SMY followed in this same year. She was the culmination of years of experience, research and consultation with many of Riviera’s motoryacht owners. A full-size mockup of the proposed saloon deck and mezzanine was built, and highly experienced yacht owners were invited to inspect and comment. This yacht would encapsulate the very best and most innovative ideas for a world-class motoryacht to be built to voyage the world or escape for long weekend. She would include wide walk-around side decks, multiple living and entertaining spaces, a gourmet aft galley and accommodation equal to the best in sixstar resorts. The technology on board would combine simplicity of operation with the most advanced capabilities. The slightly larger 72SMY was soon launched, providing more cockpit space. The team at Riviera would be entitled to stand back and admire this achievement. Yet they returned to work and began creating the future. A Platinum Edition of the Sport Yacht RIGHT: The Belize

line was unveiled in 2019 and later that year Riviera completed the largest single shipment of yachts to the United States in its history. In 2020 a 64-foot version of the Sports Motor Yacht was launched, followed by a 50SMY. Also, in 2020, the industry body, AIMEX, once again awarded Riviera Large Exporter of the Year, and in New Zealand, Riviera owners celebrated Riviera’s 40th year with a worldrecord raft-up of 106 motoryachts. Earlier this year Riviera announced a new 645 SUV model to premiere in April 2021 and there are further new model announcements to be made over the course of the year.
LOOKING AHEAD Today Riviera has the strongest forward orders the company has ever had. To meet this global demand, the company has begun a program of expansion of the site that today is the largest luxury motoryacht building facility in the southern hemisphere.
In the 19 years since the management buyout, the Riviera team has expanded the model range to five distinct collections and built 3077 motoryachts across 69 models — all of which has been achieved through consequences of the management buyout, a Global Financial Crisis, nearly three years in receivership and the challenges of the global pandemic. It is no surprise that Owner Rodney Longhurst points to his own inspiration. “I am a huge believer that together we can achieve anything, and our incredible team keep reaching above and beyond the capability they thought they had,” he said. “And I am grateful and inspired by the support and loyalty of our global family of more than 5650 motoryacht owners the world over. “There’s a special word for why people purchase a Riviera — that’s trust,” he added. “Even when we were in receivership, 289 people had faith and purchased a new boat from us. That’s the power of the Riviera reputation, and we take that very seriously.”

S
ometimes the boat you’re looking for is the boat you never knew you wanted. Such is the case of Horizon Yachts’ Fast Displacement (FD) Series which has proven unfailingly popular since hitting the water in 2016. Unusually, this was a yacht born from the pen of a designer and not a client’s lengthy list of must-haves. Renowned Dutch designer Cor D. Rover found himself filling some time on a quiet afternoon as he and his team pondered just how much boat they could squeeze into a 24m hull. When he hit upon the result – a beamy 78ft fast-displacement vessel with five staterooms – Cor set off for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show and stopped by the Horizon Yachts booth. Horizon Yachts CEO
John Lu examined the drawings and liked what he saw – the FD Series had been launched. Currently being built in sizes from 75 to 125 feet, what sets the FD Series apart is not just a wealth of volume for the waterline length, but also a proprietary bow design. Horizon’s High Performance Piercing Bow (HPPB) delivers a shallow draft, comfortable ride, lower resistance and excellent stability in comparison to a traditional fast displacement, hard-chine hull design. The significant advantage of this bow is how it works at both high speeds, for enhanced performance, and low speeds, for efficiency. The result is less wave-making resistance and more stability, potentially saving a fair amount of fuel over long distances.
As the latest FD87 Skyline prepares for its Australian debut at SCIBS in May, TradeABoat magazine found time for a chat with the originator of these innovative vessels, Cor D. Rover. TradeABoat: What was the thinking that led to you designing the first FD Series yacht? Cor D. Rover: It started off as a rainy Wednesday afternoon brainstorm session where we raised the question, “How much floating real-estate volume can we create on a sub-CE24m-hull length, without having it look like a London bus?” In the past, Wednesday was our no-client day. We had time to work on the projects that nobody asked for and nobody paid for.

BEELINE TO THE SKYLINE Among the many boats tied to the docks at this year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, it will be hard to overlook the Australian debut of this particular Horizon Yacht – the FD87 Skyline. The five-stateroom layout and full-beam master suite on the main deck are still present, but what sets this Skyline variant apart is the enclosed Sky Lounge on the upper deck, incorporating both a comfortable helm and entertaining area, safe from the elements. As TradeABoat writer James Dumergue noted in his review of the smaller FD80 Skyline last year, the open bridge is certainly inviting for Australian conditions, but when you consider the impressive displacement range of these vessels, an enclosed helm begins to make more sense. Suddenly Tasmania, New Zealand, even the South Pacific loom as potential destinations, and all in absolute comfort. Since the launch of the first FD87 in 2016, more than 30 hulls of this size model have been completed, each embodying various customisations that the yard has implemented as per client requests. The boat you’re admiring on the dock at SCIBS has been built on spec by Horizon in this case, but that’s not to say she doesn’t have a few unique inclusions to really set her apart. There are four spacious ensuite guest staterooms on the lower deck, that full-beam master suite up forward, crew quarters and a glorious aft beach club. But that enclosed bridge hides something truly special. The lightweight hardtop actually doubles as a touch-and-go helipad and this is paired with a hydraulic telescoping radar arch that folds out of the way when your VIP guests are ready to touch down.

FEATURE: FD SERIES EVOLUTION We were trying for ‘out of the box’ thinking – trying to come up with something the market was not asking for, or was not there yet. We have always said, “Nobody asked for the smartphone until you saw it.” Ok, we won’t compare ourselves to the iPhone, but as a designer, it’s good to come up with something no one is asking for. So, we worked from the inside out, starting with the interior blocks and providing five staterooms which you’d normally only find on a superyacht of 40m. Then we began chafing these ‘blocks’ off and making it all look as pretty as possible. All the while, not knowing at this time if this idea would ever really appeal to the market. TAB: Did you feel like there was some leap of faith involved with that initial concept? CDR: I was brave enough to propose it, but (Horizon CEO) John Lu was even braver by building it on spec! It is easy to dream up something, but in this case John Lu really is the star, because he saw it, he recognised the potential of the concept and said, “Well, let’s just start building and see if we can sell these yachts.” So he is the real brave guy of the two of us. TAB: What sort of design parameters did you have in mind at the time? CDR: The FD series started with the maximum hull length of 24m, which is very important here in Europe. Above this length, a lot more cost and complexity is involved in building, but even more so in running and crewing the yacht. In terms of beam, we opted for a maximum beam that would be allowed to still move in a fast displacement mode, hence the FD abbreviation. We were not interested in
full-planing speeds for comfort and economy reasons. It just had to be quick enough to make a long voyage bearable or to escape unexpected bad weather. TAB: Is the High Performance Piercing Bow (HPPB) inextricably linked with the FD hull? Can you have one without the other? CDR: Yes, you can do without the HPPB, but you will lose the waterline-length and corresponding extra speed. On top of that
you will have less buoyancy forward and you will experience some more slamming. So it’s better to leave it on! TAB: Why do you think the FD range has proven popular with owners all around the world? CDR: I think the volume in the FD series is absolutely the driving force behind the sales, but of course, the looks of the boat are important too. Features like the forwardraking windows might be a matter of taste, CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: The FD

AUSSIE OPTIONS Australian boaters quickly embraced the FD Series motoryachts from Horizon, where the blend of rugged styling, bluewater performance and acres of entertaining space found legions of fans. Combine this with Horizon’s penchant for customisation, where your every whim can become reality, and the FD yachts make real sense on local waters. One of the first to catch our eye in 2019 was a West Australian ‘hybrid’ that paired the FD87 Skylounge with topsides from the slightly shorter FD85. This vessel benefitted from the 87’s longer hull, while the open-air bridge of the 85 was better suited to the WA climate. The considerable 7.07m beam on that FD87 hull, meant the lower deck was split lengthways with double staterooms either side. The claims from the factory that the FD87 has similar total floor space to the RP110 model were very believable for TradeABoat writer Tim van Duyl. “As you wander between the VIP, twin doubles and twin single staterooms – all with their own ensuites – the volume of the lower deck of the FD87 is seriously impressive,” he said. Fellow TAB scribe James Dumergue jumped onboard the first FD80 Skyline in Queensland last year and found another great entertaining platform, with massive amounts of space created by via multiple independent zones that encouraged conversation and connections. Horizon designer Cor D. Rover looked at the underutilised real estate of the foredeck and raised the hull sides for the owner’s benefit to create not just an entertaining Sky Lounge area up top, but also below, the evolution of a main deck master suite – unrivalled in the sub-80ft market. “For spending long stretches onboard, the position of the master on the main deck is something that is an enduring highlight,” James said. “Positioned a few steps from the galley, it has immediate access to the helm and the ability to move outside from midships. Another masterstroke in the design, this cabin will change your onboard living for the better.”
but they’re also very practical. All of the commercial vessels that make a living on the ocean have forward-raking windows. So this is a very practically-designed boat, but also very user-friendly we think, too. This goes to show that overall, volume is king. And besides that, Horizon builds a fantastic value-for-money product and they treat their customers well. I have met a whole lot of Horizon repeat-clients over the years. That for me is the best sign on the wall.

TAB: Do you believe Horizon’s willingness to customise individual boats helped make the range attractive to buyers? CDR: Yes, for sure. In 2021 there is no such thing as your typical client any more. Every customer has his or her individual way of vacationing on the water. Big groups, small groups, many toys, zero toys, big champagne festivities, zen-style living on green tea – you name it. real estate volume of the FD series gives us a lot of options to subdivide and play with the available spaces TAB: Do you have any further designs upcoming that you are working on for Horizon? CDR: For sure! This morning I was just finishing a design customisation of the new FD125 which was requested by a potential buyer. Fingers crossed, but you will definitely see the range expand upwards.

leming Yachts’ mantra is ultradependability — especially when cruising remote seas where the chance of any assistance is between unlikely and impossible. Company founder Tony Fleming was drawn to long distance cruising after a career in aerospace and marine engineering. He’d been technical director and general manager for Grand Banks, so he knew what was needed to build quality motoryachts. His combined experiences set goals of safety, reliability, seaworthiness and ease of handling when he established Fleming Yachts in 1985. The first 50-foot design was well received by those who knew that quality came at a

price, but that dependability was assessed on inclusions and value rather than price alone. Owners were more than pleased and wanted to up-size, so larger versions were developed through 55-, 58-, 65- and 75-foot models. The Tung Hwa boat building company in Taiwan was selected to construct the boats to Tony’s exacting standards and has led to a mutually beneficial multi-decade association. To provide the level of quality and inclusions, as well as owner customisation, production is at a ‘boutique’ level of around 14 yachts a year. There are now 20 Flemings in Australia; they are mainly 55s, with three 65s and one 58, and another 58 coming. The first 65 was commandeered by Tony as he wanted to personally evaluate the new mid-range model despite the design and engineering having been thoroughly proven in previous versions. Tony has since logged over 66,000 nautical miles in the aptly named Venture, cruising up the North American west coast from Mexico to Alaska then south to the Galapagos Islands, through the Panama Canal, north along the east coast of the USA to the Hudson River and through the Erie Canal to the St. Lawrence Seaway. call include Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, throughout Europe which included an appearance at the Southampton Boat Show in England, circumnavigating Iceland, around the Queen Charlotte Islands in the Pacific Northwest and further north once more to Prince William Sound in the Gulf of Alaska. That ‘real world’ experience of safely and enjoyably cruising in environments ranging from protected waterways to exposed seas in hot and humid to freezing conditions has allowed Tony to continually refine his boat designs. Early acclaim came in 2006 when a judging panel from the highly regarded Yachts magazine voted the Fleming 65 best yacht in her class. This, the 53rd Fleming 65 to be built, is a good example in that her owners have up-sized after being very happy with their 55. They plan to cruise along Australia’s east coast; their first voyage will soon be underway to visit Tasmania’s scenic anchorages.

FLEMING 65 AFTER-SALE SUPPORT A key aspect of Fleming ownership is the after-sales support provided locally through Sam Nicholas of Fleming Yachts Australia. Starting during construction, owners can choose the onboard equipment they prefer which is then purchased from Australian suppliers and shipped to the factory for installation. Commissioning, training and ongoing maintenance and assistance are then available locally from the suppliers who happily provide services on the equipment they have sold. A comprehensive owner’s manual and all manuals for onboard equipment are provided with each Fleming yacht on an iPad that also provides remote access to onboard systems and delivers alarms (appropriately adjusted for onboard or away access) if anything requires attention. Security is also controlled with, for example, an alarm raised for any untoward occurrence such as bilge pumps coming on or a hatch being opened. New owners especially may require advice on some aspect of their boat’s operations, and Sam can iPad-access displays of systems and controls. Sam emphasises his availability at any time. Even away from the controls while onboard, an owner can be advised of developing circumstances of potential problems such as increasing engine coolant temperatures through the Flemingsupplied iPad. Action can be taken before the problem becomes serious.

“AN IDEAL CRUISE SPEED IS AROUND 8.5 KNOTS, WHICH DELIVERS ECONOMICAL OPERATION WITH A COMBINED FUEL CONSUMPTION OF 25 LITRES PER HOUR” The efficient semi-displacement hull was designed specifically for long distance cruising. A noticeable flair in the forward topsides gives a dry ride in all but the roughest conditions. The engines are soft-rubber-mounted with Seatorque couplings to the prop shafts for a very quiet and vibration-free ride at all speeds, while ABT stabilisers keep lateral movement to a minimum. For tranquil times at anchor, the hull does not have any hard chines nor spray rails forward and so avoids water-lapping sounds. An ideal cruise speed is around 8.5 knots, which delivers economical operation with a combined fuel consumption of 25 litres per hour at 1000rpm to give a range of 1970 nautical miles. Fast cruising for extended periods is possible at 17 knots, 2150rpm and 235 litres per hour for a range of 419 nautical miles (both examples leaving a 10 per cent fuel reserve).
EFFICIENT AND SOCIABLE PILOTHOUSE The main helm station is in the pilothouse with a superb set of screens and controls. Ahead of the stainless ship’s wheel is a touchscreen display with graphics across multiple systems, menus and pages covering
every aspect of the 65’s processes. Twin 24-inch Raymarine Axiom XL navigation displays (including depth, GPSmapping and radar) sit between two more screens that show video feeds from cameras in the engine room, the flybridge and the cockpit facing aft over the transom. Those feeds can also be seen on TV screens in the saloon and in the owner’s stateroom. Other controls such as for the bow and stern thrusters and the auto-pilot are handily positioned. The skipper has all the information they could possibly need at fingertip-availability to monitor and control every onboard system. A special request by the owner of this 65 was for a pair of overhead hatches to allow extra natural ventilation when preferable to air-conditioning. Everything is set in wonderfully finished teak cabinetry. The large windows give excellent visibility, and all have powered blinds to lower when shade or privacy is needed. The central helm chair is comfortable and supportive and provides excellent visibility to the surrounding waters. Doors to either side allow fast access to side decks, the foredeck and to the open Portuguese Bridge

immediately ahead of the Pilothouse. The side decks are wide and protected by high bulwarks. So that the skipper need not be alone in the Pilothouse, L-shaped lounges in its aft port quarter provide comfort for crew or guests around a beautifully crafted teak table. The fore-aft lounge has an extension piece that fits across the port door to make a quarter berth for napping on longer runs between waypoints. Aft-starboard in the pilothouse is a day head compartment — very convenient indeed.

CHEF-STANDARD GALLEY A set of stairs leads down and aft of the pilothouse to the spacious saloon, with settees either side of its port-side U-shaped galley. Here, and everywhere throughout the 65, is extensive stowage. The galley caters for chef-level cuisine and features a Miele oven, triple-burner cooktop and microwave, a dishwasher, dual-bowl sink
and plenty of work space. A large SMEG fridgefreezer is within easy reach to starboard. Starboard-aft in the saloon is a cabinet from which a large Sony TV rises on demand, forward of that is a dining table opposite an equally artisan-finished coffee table. Behind that is a cabinet with ice-maker and
bar fridge. Sliding doors centrally-aft open wide for clear flow-through to a large teakfeatured cockpit for open-air relaxation and entertainment. In a starboard cabinet is a set of controls for engines and thrusters while to port is a set of steps to the flybridge. A transom door leads down to a generous boarding platform. Here, a central hatch gives access into a ‘bustle’ that offers bulk storage while extending the hull, adding to waterline length and aft buoyancy. The platform, side doors in the bulwarks and flybridge level offer three heights to board and disembark. At logical points, heavy-duty yet beautifully finished deck hardware has been installed, while at the stem are dual hydraulic Maxwell anchor winches fitted with extra-strength stainless-steel chain. Two anchors are secured on twin bow rollers at the end of a short bowsprit. The foredeck and forward side decks are protected by stylishly-shaped stainless safety rails. Teak decking is magnificent, while internal cabinetry is also to the highest standards, along with selected fabrics and furnishings, creating an atmosphere of luxury — but also of welcoming relaxed comfort. While enjoying and appreciating the craftsmanship and finish, there’s not a feeling of everything being ‘precious’.

TRI-CABIN ACCOMMODATIONS Stairs lead down from the saloon to accommodations with guest cabins port and starboard offering different layouts available to owner preference. This 65 has a port-side cabin with twin side-by-side berths plus an extra slide-out berth above, and a starboard guest cabin with single upper/lower berths overlapping at 90 degrees. They share the main bathroom while doors in the passageway conceal a clothes-washer/dryer set. Right forward is the owner’s stateroom with a king island berth that slides out for easier making and lifts on gas struts to store bulky items beneath. An array of lockers and drawers will take all the clothes and accessories needed for a long voyage. Overhead is a large hatch with insect-screen and (powered) sun-shade plus to either side are portholes (also screened, and curtained) for more light and air as needed. To port is a full ensuite while to starboard is more locker stowage, a small lounge and, on the bulkhead above that, a large TV.
SPACIOUS FLYBRIDGE As well as the steps to the flybridge from the cockpit, more convenient access is up a set of stairs from the Pilothouse. Extending aft to CLOCKWISE FROM RIGHT: The

shade the cockpit, the flybridge is huge, even for a 65-foot yacht. The upper helm station is well equipped with displays and controls, and is ideally positioned forward on the port side with a double-width raised seat. Opposite that is a pair of sun lounges and behind those are U-shaped settees around a crafted teak table. Further aft is more floor space with further settees, a barbecue, room for an inflatable dinghy and its davit. Safety rails surround the hatch and steps down to the cockpit and, right at the back to port,
there is another engine/thruster control station. There’s a remote set of controls too.
IMPRESSIVE ENGINEERING Leaving the best to last, an inspection of the engineering areas below the cockpit and saloon is impressive and, to many, will be inspirational. A hatch in the sole of the cockpit leads down to the large lazarette where many of the systems are positioned along with wiring panels neatly laid out and labelled.

The layout of equipment for easy access and maintenance is a clear indication of Fleming’s superior engineering. A very sophisticated German Böning (pronounced as ‘Burning’) switching, monitoring and alarm system has panels of circuit breakers in the lazarette and remote controls at the pilothouse helm. An example of the redundancy built into Fleming yachts is the steering system which has three hydraulic pumps to cater for failure in any one. An instance of thoughtful experience is that the engine air intakes are routed through the lazarette so that any remnants of salt spray are prevented from reaching the engine room. The latter is reached through a water-tight hatch at the front of the lazarette. A wide passage stretches further forward between the two immaculate white MAN i6 800 horsepower diesels that power the 65. Everything is effectively secured with wiring and hoses deftly positioned and with
the latter showing double or even triple clamps on critical joins. The through-hull stop-cocks are easily reachable and labelled.
IN CLOSING There is just so much to appreciate and understand on the Fleming 65, and it is indeed a tribute to Tony Fleming and his team. It might seem expensive at $6.6million as reviewed, but the value is there for those who take the time to study the inherent quality and all that is included — especially the stand-out engineering. There’s much more to see than mentioned here. The other strength is its practical usability. Every part of the 65 brings immediate pleasure in its airy and comfortable feel, to the point that you have to stop and think before you acknowledge the underlying craftsmanship and luxury. For its intended purpose, the Fleming 65 is a stand-out.

Many of the V6 Dino’s most distinctive design touches were carried over in the Pininfarina-styled body, including the scalloped door intakes, twin circular rear tail lights (reintroduced on the F8 Tributo) and the vertical concave rear screen, bounded by distinctive flying buttresses. tyle and substance. When you come right down to it, these are the two core elements of a boat, any boat. And the vast majority of boats today have substance: good design, quality materials, solid construction, reliable engineering and at least acceptable performance. The key point of differentiation between boats then becomes style. That leads to a key question — do you want to be ‘one of the crowd’, or to stand out with something unique? If you wish to stand out, in a nice way of course, then this Sirena 58 could well be your dream come true. Or, if style is not high in your priorities but substance is paramount, then it could still qualify impressively. The Sirena 58 birthright could be termed International-Mediterranean. The hull design is by the renowned yacht designer Germán Frers. He is the third generation of the Argentinian-based Frers Naval Architecture and Engineering Company which has a tradition of designing outstanding yachts on the world stage dating back to 1925. Germán himself (pronounced Herman) extended his home experiences with studies at the Southampton Institute in the UK before continuing his work at the company’s Italian studio in Milan where he has produced a wide range of successful designs since 1992. Frers uses advanced computer technology and extensive tank-testing programs to develop and optimise its designs. Germán’s background in yacht design has produced a very efficient hull for the Sirena. That was a key requirement by the boatbuilder, Sirena Marine, which is part of a family-owned multi-faceted Turkish company with very strong financial resources across industries such as motor vehicles, rail transportation, hotels, white goods and more. Only recently has the Sirena marque been introduced after many years’ experience building under licence such well known vessels as Azimut and Swan. It was after producing those boats and being involved in their design and engineering that the decision was made to create its own unique cruisers under the Sirena banner. With a desire and passion to be the best, after selecting Germán Frers as the head designer, the
company brought onboard leading interior designers Tommaso Spadolini from Italy and Cor D. Rover from Holland to complete a very talented and international team. (A commission for the King of Spain established Spadolini as one of the ‘big boys’ in the yacht design world.) The 58 is the smallest sister of 64 and 88 siblings, the numbers designating length in feet. Plans for a 78 and a larger 108 motoryacht are already underway. The 58 is available in both flybridge, as seen here, and saloon versions. Over the last five years, some 52 Sirenas have found appreciative owners across a mix of the 58 and 64 models. This was the first Sirena brought into Australia and was purchased within a month, indicating a strong welcome for the design style to our local market.

The Australian distributor is eYachts which, under its founder and MD Peter Hrones, has found success in daring to be different. Peter took two years in his due-diligence research of Sirena before including the marque with his other brands of Axopar, Pardo, Brabus, Greenline and Vanquish — all very ‘special’ and very interesting vessels. Peter has a great deal of sailing in his background, and already had a high regard for Germán Frers yacht designs, so he was pleased and impressed to find he was a key player in the Sirena style. Peter commented: “We visited the Sirena factory and saw a large number of boats under construction, including many Azimuts. We found out the real numbers behind the company and the Sirena brand itself. Another Aussie owns a 58 based in Cannes, and I have contacts in America
138
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2021
who are doing well with Sirena, even though they have been sold mostly in Europe. Only a year ago Sirena was taking one order a month for the 88 at about $12 million, partly because it offers the volume of a typical 100-foot yacht. The 58 is also very spacious being about 20 per cent larger internally than competitive 58s or even 60s. I believe the 58 saloon will do well in Australia in addition to this flybridge model.” He added: “I like the 58 hull design which has a bit of a keel and is very responsive with twin V-drive shafts spinning large five-blade props. A lot of trawler-based cruisers are OK at around 10 knots but are just pushing water by the time they get to 15 knots. This Sirena though is quite efficient up to or past 20 knots and, with 3600 litres of fuel, it’s very good for longer distance cruising. The construction too is very suited to

our Australian climate with big windows letting in a lot of light but also with wide overhangs to keep the interior cool without having to use the aircon, although that’s available of course when needed. It’s good value too.” In appearance, the 58 is what could be called atypical and certainly stands out in any company. There is a slight reverse-angle to the stem and there are straight gun’l lines below a vertical (but very curved laterally) saloon leading edge topped by another straight cabin line beneath a level hardtop for the flybridge. The only concessions to any rakish element are the hardtop supports, and even the topsides have rectangular and square portholes. Despite all those straight edges, the Sirena exudes elements of strength, efficiency and seaworthiness that combine to create an attractive package for anyone who can look past largely superfluous ‘streamlining’ often seen on similar size cruisers. Those elements are confirmed upon closer inspection.
A SMOOTH RIDE The first clue comes when you notice how the Frers-designed hull slips through the water quite effortlessly. Helm stations in the saloon and flybridge are to port and have similar layouts with good ergonomics except that the throttle/shifts are a bit too far forward at both stations and need a reach to get to them (something curiously found at many helm stations). However, the joysticks give more intuitive control and are level with the wheel for easier use. Both helms have good allround vision, although the flybridge naturally has the best.

“AS WITH ELSEWHERE ON THE 58, THERE’S JUST SO MUCH ROOM TO MOVE AROUND AND RELAX”
140
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2021
The dash layouts are much the same; the lower helm has dual Garmin multi-function navaid/system displays with one on the flybridge. Both stations feature a healthy range of equipment and controls including an autopilot and twin Caterpillar data displays, the latter keeping the skipper apprised of the function and health of the twin Cat 650hp diesels in the neatly laid out and well labelled engine room. A camera feed of the engine room was optionally included which any careful skipper would appreciate. Looking around that engine room, entered through a hatch in the cockpit sole, gives another clue to the ‘substance’ of the Sirena with immediate impressions of quality engineering and equipment. Those Cats ran smoothly and easily sped the Sirena 58 to a top speed on the day of 22.4 knots at 2275rpm while consuming 248L/h. Of course, cruising would be more usual at a very pleasant 1500rpm at 12.4 knots and drinking a more modest 92L/h. Allowing 10 per cent reserve in the 3600L tankage, that would give a range of 437 nautical miles. At a leisurely 1000rpm for 8.9 knots and 25L/h, range would be a generous 1153 nautical
miles. More powerful Caterpillar 850hp or Volvo 900hp engines are optional. The Sirena handled with aplomb, reacting to the wheel and throttles in a pleasing manner. We had mostly calm waters for our time aboard, but through some mild swells out past Lion Island, the hull did not move around too much at all. The deck, superstructure and flybridge hardtop are made from lightweight carbon fibre which helps lower the centre of gravity for better stability. The fairly wide beam of 5.38m assists too. We didn’t feel the need for a gyroscopic stabiliser, but one is available as an option for anyone planning longer offshore cruises through potentially rougher conditions. Around marinas or crowded anchorages, the joystick provides precise control with fast reactions to intuitive movements. The big Cats with large props deliver instant power as needed, but in a well-controlled manner aided by the bow thruster. A stern thruster is optional but it would hardly be needed; also optional is a cockpit control station. Mooring from either helm is straightforward with winch controls and chain counters for the strong ground equipment that extends
SIRENA 58
CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE RIGHT:

marginally forward of the bow so that the anchor can drop past the slight reverse angle of the stem. A 4kW genset is standard, but this 58 had an optional 17.5kW Onan generator which is required for the 73,000 BTU aircon system. A 2400W inverter is also aboard to assist with the domestic-voltage power supply.
BIG COMFORT The bridge helm has comfortable seating for two and there’s a large sunpad forward to starboard. Behind that are U-shaped lounges around a table accompanied, further aft, by a wet bar with barbecue, fridge and icemaker. An unusual feature that’s sure to be popular is a hot/cold shower in the centre support for the flybridge hardtop. There’s plenty of open space at this top level as well for casual seating or beanbag-style relaxers. Overhead a sunshade powers closed when required.
Looking down from the flybridge , you’re rewarded with a view of a very comfortable foredeck with large sunpads in front of seating along the front of the saloon. Extensive stowage lockers are provided along with multiple drink holders. As with elsewhere on the 58, there’s just so much room to move around and relax. The transom of the Sirena 58 has a large teak-lined boarding platform on hydraulic lifts capable of handling up to 650kg. Sets of steps either side lead up into the large cockpit, also teak-soled, with a central aft lounge and crafted timber table. A wide doorway allows flow-through access to the saloon which is bright and cheerful with large windows all round shaded to an effective extent by wide overhangs on the sidedecks. Concertina-style blinds provide privacy when required. The fully equipped galley is aft to starboard where it is perfect for serving either the cockpit or saloon, or indeed up to the flybridge via stairs which are close by in the port-forward area of the cockpit. In front of the galley are L-shaped lounges and across to port are more lounges, this time in a U-shape around the coffee/dining table. A 42in TV rises from behind the starboard lounges. Right forward to port is the lower helm while opposite is a curved stairway leading to the belowdecks accommodations. Another option fitted to this Sirena is very handy, especially when a couple is crewing alone, for which the 58 is entirely suitable. That option is a starboard side door in the saloon for fast access to the decks when mooring or coming alongside. Deck hardware is strong and logically positioned and, on this 58, power winches aft would take the strain out of hauling heavier mooring lines or of more precisely positioning the Sirena at a dock.

SIRENA 58
LUXE LIVING Belowdecks, the master stateroom is fullbeam amidships with an island queen bed, loads of storage, a settee to starboard and a dressing table or potential office/work-area to port. A generously sized ensuite runs forward on the starboard side, while a handy option is a safe for valuables. A VIP cabin is forward with another island berth and ensuite, whilst a twin-berth cabin is aft of that to port sharing access to the day bathroom. A further small cabin is discreetly included right aft with a doorway in from the boarding platform. Ostensibly for ‘crew’, in local conditions it’s more likely to be used for storage and changing for watersports. It has its own small ensuite and aircon as well. The main accommodations have aircon as expected. All through the Sirena, lovely timbers, fabrics and carpets are enhanced with excellent workmanship for a most welcoming atmosphere that relaxes whilst still presenting a tone of luxury. A high degree of customization is available from Sirena. Peter Hrones noted: “This is just one interior with an oak finish and grey walnut trim. We literally have a suitcase full of optional timbers and fabrics.” He went on, somewhat frankly: “Our boats are not for everyone in their looks; people either love them or hate them. However,
142
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2021
those who initially hate them often return a few years later and find them appealing. We strive at eYachts to bring something different to the market, taking a risk, and it seems to pay off.” If you are set to invest in a motoryacht of this size and calibre, you should inspect the Sirena even if its external style is not immediately what you have in mind. The interior is sure to please, and maybe surprise, and the look of the vessel can easily grow on you. Compare the value against its competitors as well and judge how it stacks up.
