THE CITY OF NEW YORK OFFICE OF THE MAYOR NEW YORK, NY 10007

March 22, 2011

Dear Friends: It is a great pleasure to welcome everyone to Youth America Grand Prix’s “Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow” Gala. As an international capital of the arts, New York is home to a thriving dance community. That’s why we’re proud to join Youth America Grand Prix in celebrating another season. For more than a decade, this organization has provided outstanding support and services to talented young dancers. And with more than 25,000 young people participating in its international workshops, competitions, and audition classes, YAGP is helping to ensure our City’s cultural preeminence for many generations to come. On behalf of the City of New York, I commend all those involved with Youth America Grand Prix for their commitment to fostering the talents of young dancers. In addition, I am proud to send my best wishes to all of those dancers performing tonight. I know you’ve worked hard to get to this stage, and I hope you enjoy every minute of it! Best wishes for a terrific evening. Sincerely,

Michael R. Bloomberg Mayor

WELComE from thE foUnDErS Dear Friends,

LARISSA SAVELIEV Founder and Artistic Director

As the 12th Season of Youth America Grand Prix comes to a culmination during its New York City Finals and YAGP 2011 Gala, we would like to thank you – our participants, parents, teachers, dance professionals, and contributors – for making our first 11 years such a success. With your dedication and support, Youth America Grand Prix has become the world’s largest student ballet competition and international dance network, reaching over 5,000 dancers annually, presenting over $250,000 annually in scholarships to the world’s top dance academies, and recognized by UNESCO for its significant contributions to the international dance education. This year, we continued to expand the professional and educational opportunities we provide to our participants by inviting them to perform at the International Ballet Festival of Miami in September 2010, opening a regional semi-final competition in Paris, France in November 2010, taking a group of talented YAGP dancers on our first-ever U.S. Gala tour in February-March 2011, and giving them a chance to perform at the world-renowned Guggenheim Museum as part of “Works & Process” series. All of these events made YAGP history. As part of YAGP’s semi-finals in Paris, master classes with the distinguished members of the YAGP jury panel were held at the Paris Opera Ballet School – marking the first time in its 300-year history that the School opened its doors to an outside organization. Elisabeth Platel, former Etoile of Paris Opera Ballet and the current Director of Paris Opera Ballet School, served as the President of the Jury. The inaugural U.S. Gala tour, presented in association with Opus 3 Artists, allowed local communities in the U.S. to experience the magic of YAGP Galas – which, before then, could only be seen as part of the Finals in New York. Featuring some of today’s leading international ballet stars alongside the winners of YAGP competitions, the “Ballet Grand Prix” tour included performances in Germantown, TN, Charleston, SC, Miami, FL, Burlington, VT, and New Bedford, MA. Being selected for the “Works & Process” series at the Guggenheim marked the very first time for YAGP to be presented as part of this prestigious series providing unique insight into the creative process of some of today’s leading artists and arts organizations.

GENNADI SAVELIEV Founder and President

This season also brings two very special “firsts” for YAGP: “Young Dancer Database” and the “YAGP Job Fair.” Young Dancer Database is a comprehensive photo/video database of young dancers worldwide, searchable by the directors and representatives of schools and companies all over the world. YDD will be available to all current participants of YAGP – and to all YAGP alumni from previous seasons. This extraordinary new tool is designed for dancers seeking a scholarship, a professional job contract, or an opportunity to change companies if they are already employed. “YAGP Job Fair” is a series of special audition classes at NYC Finals designed specifically to showcase young talent seeking professional employment. Attended by the directors of the world’s leading dance companies, the YAGP Job Fair is open free of charge to all YAGP NYC Finalists from the current or previous seasons. Together with the programs that already run successfully at YAGP – including “Dance in Higher Education” and “YAGP NYC Intensive” – we hope these new initiatives will help fulfill our mission to raise the next generation of dance artists. As always, the YAGP Gala, “Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow,” will treat the audience to a spectacular evening of dance featuring some of the most celebrated artists performing today and the talented participants of YAGP. Welcome to the YAGP 2011 New York City Finals! Larissa Saveliev, Founding Artistic Director Gennadi Saveliev, Founding Executive Director Sergey Gordeev, Founding Director of PR and External Affairs

yoUth amEriCa granD PriX a briEf oVErViEW Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) is a New York-based 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization formed in 1999 to support and develop world-class dancers ages 9 to 19 in the United States, europe, South America and the Far east, inclusive of all racial, ethnic and economic backgrounds. Through its grassroots competition and mentoring programs, Youth America Grand Prix helps talented young dancers by providing scholarships to the leading dance schools of the world. YAGP offers dance students the rare opportunity to be seen, taught and professionally guided by the directors and faculty of the world’s foremost companies and schools, including: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, New York city Ballet, Australian Ballet School, canada’s National Ballet School, John cranko School of Stuttgart Ballet (Germany), La Scala Ballet Academy (Italy), Paris Opera Ballet, and The Royal Ballet School (england), among others.

SomE of yoUth amEriCa granD PriX S SignifiCant aChiEVEmEntS arE: In only 12 years, YAGP has become the largest student ballet scholarship competition in the world. The number of participating students, teachers, dance schools and companies exceeds all others with great cultural and ethnic diversity. YAGP is the internet of the dance world, a global network of opportunity for young dancers. In 2002, YAGP established emerging choreographer Series to provide an opportunity for upcoming young choreographers to present their work to the international dance community. The choreographers showcased in the series have recently included Marcelo Gomes, Adam Hougland, camille A. Brown, among others. In 2005, the United Nations educational, Scientific and cultural Organization (UNeScO) recognized YAGP’s contribution to international dance education by awarding it with a membership in UNeScO’s prestigious conseil International de la Danse (cID). YAGP has awarded over $2,000,000 USD in scholarships to the world’s leading dance schools. Over 25,000 dancers worldwide have participated in YAGP’s international workshops, competitions, and audition classes. Over 250 YAGP alumni are now dancing with fifty companies around the world, including American Ballet Theatre (23 YAGP alumni performing now), New York city Ballet (6), Paris Opera Ballet, San Francisco Ballet (8), Washington Ballet (14), Stuttgart Ballet (5), Royal Ballet (3), and Dutch National Ballet (4), among others. In 2007, Youth America Grand Prix further increased the number of performance opportunities for its participants by becoming the first organization in the 50-year history of Italy’s prestigious Spoleto Dance Festival to present performances by dance students. In 2008, Youth America Grand Prix opened its first Semi-Final in europe, thus expanding its scholarship network even further. In addition, YAGP organized a 4-city Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow Gala tour of Mexico, which culminated in a spectacular Gala evening in Mexico city at the country’s national theater, Palacio de Bellas Artes. In 2009, Youth America Grand Prix celebrated its 10th Anniversary Season with an allstar, all-YAGP-alumni Gala at New York city center. During the Gala, YAGP participants broke the Guinness World Record for most dancers en pointe. YAGP also opened an educational Gala series, Legends In Dance. In 2010, YAGP opened a Semi-Final in Paris, France, launched the Young Dancer Database connecting dance students, schools and companies across the globe, and introduced the YAGP Job Fair a special audition series giving YAGP participants and alumni a chance to be seen by the directors of the world’s leading dance companies. YAGP 2011 inAuGurAl u.S. GAlA Tour YAGP is committed to expanding performance opportunities for its participants – and it was with this mission in mind that YAGP presented, in association with Opus 3 Artists, its first U.S. Gala tour in February and March of 2011. YAGP participants from the U.S. and abroad joined some of today’s most celebrated ballet artists on a 5-city tour, which gave local audiences a chance to experience the magic of the YAGP Gala in their local communities. YAGP 2011 Gala guest stars included Jose Manuel Carreno, Melanie Hamrick, Michele Wiles, Irina Dvorovenko, and Maxim Beloserkovsky (American Ballet Theatre), Charles Askegard (New York City Ballet), Mikhail Kaniskin and Elisa Carillo Cabrera (Berlin State Opera Ballet), Drew Jacoby and Rubinald Pronk (Jacoby and Pronk), Francesca Podini (La Scala Ballet), and Oksana Skoryk and Igor Kolb (Mariinsky Ballet). The young YAGP students were delighted to share this experience with their professional role models. Greeted by a standing ovation at every venue, the inaugural U.S. Tour of the YAGP Gala was an unforgettable experience for the audiences and the performers alike!
