a weekly torah thought vezos habrachah: is it the end or the beginning? By Rabbi Eliyahu Kirsh Because Vezos Habrachah is read on Simchas Torah, amidst simchah and lightheadedness, many of its deeper meanings and sentiments are missed. If we read this parshah on a regular Shabbos, we would read it in a very different frame of mind. After all, Moshe Rabbeinu our greatest leader, agent of Hashem to bring us the Torah and the greatest human being who ever lived, is ready to part from us. He gives Klal Yisroel his brachos; the individual tribes as well as the entire nation receive brachos from Moshe. He then ascends the mountain for the last time, where Hashem shows him a panoramic view of Eretz Yisroel. Rashi, quoting Chazal, explains that all of the places mentioned in this parshah are not just to delineate the topography of Eretz Yisrael but to focus on our future history as well. The Torah then tells us how Moshe dies and Hashem himself buries him at Mount Nebo – however, until today, no one knows where his burial site is. The Torah also testifies that until Moshe’s last moment he had his full strength and capacities that “his eyes did not dim and his vigor did not diminish.” He was physically able to live longer, but his mission was complete. Am Yisroel is ready for the next chapter in their history. The Torah tells us that never again would there be a prophet like Moshe Rabbeinu who communicated with Hashem directly and performed all the signs and wonders we had seen in Mitzrayim. In the last Rashi in Chamisha Chumshei Torah, it is explained that Moshe’s breaking of the Luchos was his most commendable act and done with Hashem’s full consent. The Maaglei Zedek of Dej explains that it was

done to show that there was a Creator. Klal Yisroel is Hashem’s agent to relay this message to the world. If, chas v’shalom, the nation is oved avodah zarah, the purpose of creation is not being realized. The Luchos are the microcosm of the Torah - the blueprint for the world. Torah and avodah zarah CANNOT mix. That is why Moshe broke the Luchos. Understanding this may help us understand why we read Vezos Habrachah on Simchas Torah and with great simchah. Simchas Torah is the day we finish the yearly cycle of the Torah reading. There is always simchah when we finish a major portion of Torah study – we make a siyum upon finishing a tractate of the Gemarah. So it is appropriate that we celebrate when we finish Chamisha Chumshei Torah. We celebrate our special mission as the Am Hashem to bring His Torah and His message to the world. To enhance our simchah, we sing and dance beyond our usual measure. If we truly feel this simchah shel mitzvah and our unique mission in the world, then Moshe Rabbeinu is really not gone from us. He is alive. His legacy is alive. The legacy of all our great Torah leaders is alive. If we follow what the Torah and its disseminators have taught us, then we are joining in a link of Mesorah all the way back to Har Sinai. These ideas should be our thoughts as we celebrate Simchas Torah and begin the Torah reading cycle anew each year. May we all be worthy of the beautiful brachos the Torah promises to those who learn and fulfill its teachings and may we merit to see full revelation of Hashem’s Torah in Yemos Hamashiach bemheira veyamienu. Amen.

Rabbi Eliyahu Kirsh is Rav of Congregation Daughters of Israel, Clifton, NJ. Politician Promises Shomrim Protective Vests Following the shooting of four members of the Borough Park Shomrim by a man caught exposing himself to children, NYS Senator Eric Adams announced that he had purchased five vests for the Chasidic neighborhood watch group and would raise funds to purchase more, according to WINS Radio. “The only barrier between the safety of our children and this criminal behavior was this organization that we are standing in front of now, “ Adams told reporters, “and that needs to be clearly understood.” Adams retired as a captain in 2006 after serving 22 years with the NYPD. A sometimes controversial figure, he co-founded 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, an advocacy group for black police officers, and often spoke out against police brutality and racial profiling. (JTA)

Brooklyn Daycares Shutdown Several Brooklyn daycare centers were forced to shut down recenlty after the Health Department arrested employees for fraud and corruption under “Operation Pay Care.” Unless there are significant changes at some other centers, there may be more closings as well. City workers were found accepting bribes from a ring of Russian child-care workers who frequently violated teacher-child ratio and permit rules. Federal prosecutors have arrested eleven people, including seven New York City officials from three city agencies in an $18 million daycare bribery ring. The group allegedly “fraudulently obtained more than $18 million intended to help needy parents with public assistance for day care services” by bribing workers to bill the city for children who were not enrolled in the day care subsidy program. DOT Commissioner Rose Gill Hearn said, “These defendants chose payoffs and profit over their promise to serve the best interests of children, according to the complaint. Public funds were stolen to line the defendants’ pockets and integrity was thrown out the window.” Six of the 38 day care centers have closed after investigtors found open containers of alcohol sitting in the fridge next to the kids’ lunches.

Union Square Hosts Sukkah Contest Most sukkahs are made out of wood, plastic or cloth material, but visit Union Square and you can see huts made out of everything from grass to wooden sticks to even plastic raincoats. This week ends the 5- month long contest created by Joshua Foer and Roger Bennett of the cultural organization, Reboot, which invited people to build their vision of a modern day sukkah and they did with over 600 entries. Designers must adhere to the Talmudic requirements of a kosher sukkah as well as what the Building Department considers a temporary dwelling on public property. The contest‘s website, www.sukkahcity.com pictorially displays many of the specifications – there must be more shade than sunlight, at least 2 and a half walls and organic materials to cover the roof. The biblical handbreadths and cubits have been translated into modern day measurements of feet and inches. Leaders in the architectural industry judged the contest. The 12 finalists will build their sukkah in Union Square Park in NYC September 19-21 and the final winner’s sukkah will remain standing throughout the chag.

Trolleys Coming To Brooklyn It looks like Brooklyn may be getting trolleys as another means of transportation. The Transportation Department has received a federal grant of $295, 000 to conduct a five-month study to determine if it is feasible to install a mile long trolley system from the Red Hook waterfront area to Atlantic Ave. Red Hook’s only bus line is the B61. Budget cuts eliminated two others and the nearest F-train station is more than a mile away. The Brooklyn Historic Railway Association has lobbied for the trolley line since 1989. Its president, Bob Diamond, estimates completion to cost $10 million to $15 million.

Looking For Jewish Heroes The Jewish Federation of Greater Orange County is awarding $25, 000 to a Jewish Community Hero who is working to improve his community. Last year, more than 400 people were nominated — people for whom “tikkun olam” is not just an abstract principle, but also a way of life. Nominees came both from the community and

from across North America — and their projects were just as varied. One of the finalists worked to ensure that kosher restaurants not only followed Jewish law, but also engaged in ethical and humane practices; the Hero of the Year organized a Jewish volunteer program that performed acts of community service all across the country. Anyone nominated will receive a Jewish Community Hero certificate and be eligible to win a $25, 000 investment in his/her community service project. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Center To Open In Brooklyn Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) celebrated a new outpatient chemotherapy center, which is scheduled to open later this month, pending approval from the State Department of Health. The 7, 745-square-foot facility, called the Brooklyn Infusion Center, will provide leading-edge chemotherapy services to current MSKCC patients who live in or near Brooklyn. This amounts to more than 15 percent of MSKCC’s patients currently being treated in Manhattan. Many of these patients can now be spared the regular commute and receive their treatment in a more convenient setting designed to meet the special needs of chemotherapy patients and their caregivers. In addition to relieving space constraints at MSKCC’s Manhattan sites, the Brooklyn Infusion Center seeks to identify new ways to deliver costeffective care and reduce patient waiting times. For example, patients receiving treatment at the Brooklyn Infusion Center will benefit from a “chemoready” approach in which blood work is performed the day before and a nurse is then able to contact the patient in advance to review test results, thereby reducing patient anxiety over whether he or she has been “cleared” for treatment. Other unique approaches and amenities of the facility include: A novel chemotherapy chair that includes a chairside touch-screen interactive system enabling patients to call a nurse, get some work or shopping done on the Internet, or make videophone calls with friends and family, and control their own lighting and heating in the space. Integrative medicine services such as Reiki, acupressure, and massage therapy can be delivered chairside by specially trained nurses on staff.

Telemedicine, to enable patients to communicate with their Manhattan-based MSKCC physicians, nurses, and healthcare professionals from other disciplines, such as social work. An indoor garden space, which offers patients a place to socialize, sit quietly, or participate in activities that accommodate both patients and their care partners.

A Shidduch Between SawYouAtSinai And Neve Yerushalayim Neve Yerushalayim, The College for Jewish Women’s Studies, has partnered with Jewish matchmaking service SawYouAtSinai.com to create NeveKesher.org, a dating site exclusively for Neve Yerushalayim students and alumnae. The seminary, which opened in Jerusalem in 1970, has more than 1, 000 students each year and currently has branches in Israel, Britain, and the US. NeveKesher allows the Neve institutions to expand their alumnae services by assisting them with their dating, even when the women are no longer attending the school, or even in the same country as their teachers. NeveKesher.org will be interconnected with the expansive SawYouAtSinai database, allowing matches across the two sites. The service has also recruited matchmakers who are connected with Neve: either women that are alumnae themselves, have a child who is an alumna or have already become involved with Neve in other ways. This enables the singles and the matchmakers to relate to each other more effectively. Mrs. Varda Berkovitz, the Neve Kesher Matchmaking Coordinator, was integral in setting up the site and has recruited well-respected matchmakers such as Rebbetzin Anna Vorhand, Mrs. Zelda Cutler and Mrs. Kim (Davis) Solomon. The service also offers the singles personalized feedback from a team of mentors; helping members navigate the site, advise them on dating experiences and guide them on how to improve their profiles. Mentors Rebbetzin. Hillary Kahn and Rebbetzin Tziporah Eisemann have been brought on board for this purpose. Since its inception in 2003, SawYouAtSinai has gained 30, 000 members and over 350 experienced matchmakers from diverse backgrounds, and with over 1, 000 members successfully matched, we hope to hear more mazal tov’s soon!

OVER 400 ATTEND BAR-BE-QUE FOR OUR PLACE

Community leaders and politicians were amongst those who participated in the first annual Our Place BBQ fund-raiser and awareness event. The event, sponsored by T Fusion Steakhouse, was successful in creating awareness about the substance abuse issues within the Jewish communities. Numerous appeals were made throughout the evening. Founded in 1998, Our Place employs a multi-faceted approach to counseling, rehabilitating and guiding troubled Jewish youth in their return to mainstream society. Our Place has numerous youth centers which are a haven for over 1000 teenagers annually who face a wide range of social problems and substance abuse issues. These teens come from all strains of Jewish communities nationwide. Our Place services include Single Motherhood Assistance, Job Placement, GED Program, Substances Abuse counseling, 24/7 Crisis Hotline, Time Out Retreats, One- On-One, and locations offer Hot Meals daily. Jewish Boxer Dmitriy Salita spoke of his own trials and tribulations and the constant will to overcome and succeed. Our thanks to State Assemblyman Dov Hikind, Shomrim Patrols’ Director Chaim Duetsch, NYPD Captain Michael Deddo, NYPD Seargent Ira Jablonsky, and NYPD Officer Richard Taylor, all tremendous supporters of Our Place, who assisted with the street closure. My Remaining 2 cents By Leibel Schneckity

Places Not to Go Here is a list of places not to go for your entertainment on Chol Hamoed. We strongly do not recommend any of them. Dusenberg Aquarium The Dusenberg’s of Cedarhurst asked us to let everyone know that they don’t really have an aquarium. 8-year-old Shloimy Dusenberg, initially put up signs to see what turned out to be his fish tanks. He made 50 dollars before his parents stopped him. Shloimy was just about to buy other kinds of fish besides goldfish. Lazer’s Tag Don’t be fooled here either. This is not really lazer tag, it is Lazer Gruenstien playing tag with his friends. Men only. Paint-a-Penguin Not opening in a mall near you. Sooner or later Build-aBear was going to have imitators. Others on the drawing board include Lick-a-Lion, Manicure-a-Moose, and Dress-aDog. Louie’s Chop Shop Tour This unique tour shows how a vehicle can be disassembled in no time at all. Very educational for the budding mechanic. However, they were closed down. It turns out that the proprietors were caught stealing cars and having them sold for parts. What a surprise! These next few first ran in the Jewish Press in April 2001 by Zev and Lisa Steinhardt. They actually seem to be advocating these places. Don’t be fooled. They obviously are shills for these frauds. My comments follow. Annual Rockaway Paint Drying Festival Every Year, the township of Rockaway, New Jersey, features this unbelievable event. Before the festival, a house is painted. Then the entire town is invited to come and watch the paint dry. Two years ago, our kids spent three mindSome announcements from Congregation Kehila Bnei Khal Rabbi Swift - Rabbi The weekly Daf Yomi will be Friday morning after davening. There will be a late vasikin minyan starting next week. The mid afternoon Kollel Chatzos was cancelled. The “Bein Hashmoshes, Bein Hazmanim, Bain Hasedarim Shiur” is a special shiur about close to sundown between the afternoon and night sedarim for the boys home from Yeshiva. Call for details. The next Molad will be Friday October 8 at 8:20 AM and 2 chalakim. Please let us know if you are available. We would like to thank Zalman Krepple for his Matan Bseiser donation to the shul.

numbing hours just watching the paint dry. What an experience, the kids were mesmerized. Paint dry, come on! Even if it was exciting, who would travel a few hours for that. How can you even tell if it is dry. It looks the same wet and dry. Hello? Chaim’s “Do-It-Yourself-Hernia-Surgery” Clinic Ever have trouble with that hernia but couldn’t afford all those massive doctor and hospital bills? Well, have we got the answer for you “herniacs” out there. For only $50 you get a bottle of local anesthetic, scalpel, sutures and a full color, three dimensional guide with instructions how to do it. Where else can you get your problem fixed for only $50 and 30 minutes? Are they kidding? This is very dangerous and unethical. Instead of publicizing this they should be shutting it down and Chaim should lose any licenses he has. Dave’s Velcro Palace This is the place for parents. Each parent who comes is given a Velcro suit for each child they bring. After your kids are in suits, simply find a free spot on the Velcro covered wall. This is the perfect solution for the parents who simply need a break from their kids. We left Rochel here for hours last year. If leaving a kid in a car is illegal why is this allowed? This Rochel probably had to get physical therapy for this. As I said before, there are many fun, exciting places to bring your children, these are not among them.

From the Mailbag Just Kidding Leibel, The article by the Steinhardts, was a satire. For example, it is obvious that in Chaim’s Clinic, he actually talks with you for a few minutes. The Editors Velcro Palace Responds Mr. Schneckity, We need to take issue with your comments about our establishment. The kids are supervised and are taken down once an hour. Dave Ford Dave’s Velcro Palace

You can reach me with your thoughts, suggestions, comments, advice, complaints, criticisms, letters, correspondence, ideas, analysis, anecdotes, feedback at Schneckity@aol.com. No critiques please. I hate those. To Advertise in the SHoPPeR contact us at 347-381-3990 or at shopper@jewishpress.com
