Sofa tips

1) To ensure the sofa you are buying is sturdy and well built, you lift up one of the front legs a few inches- the other front leg should lift as well. If it is still touching the floor- the frame is weak. 2) Use this formula to ensure the comfort of a sofa bought online seat height+ seat depth 40” (102cm) -44” (112cm) is the best bet 3) As Mary McDonald said ‘a perfect sofa is 40” (102cm) deep, 60” (153) long, and 36” (92cm) high with a 19” (48cm) seat height’.

4)

Herringbone will always be in trend.

5) Stripes, florals, you name it, I love pattern! But using a pattern as one of these isn't for the faint of heart- it says, ‘I am bold, fearless, and not afraid of commitment’. And don’t center your fabric’s pattern on the seat cushions- a pattern is centered on the back of the sofa so that it will run all the way down and match everywhere, including the skirts.

6) Try to avoid 2-cushion sofas, as the third person will not seat in the middle. Try to find a sofa with three or just one cushion. Two cushion, three cushion or one cushion sofa? Why choosing one over the other? Is it a style or comfort? A problem with a two cushion sofa does not appear until you have people over and three want to sit (one of whom is on the crack). Two cushion sofas generally have wider and more comfortable cushions. Although, if you have a three cushion sofa, you will rarely see more than two people sitting on it at a time. It is just too cramped for three people. However, the center person does not end up sitting on the crack between the cushions. The only issue with the single cushion sofas is its filling. If the couch or the fabric are too stiff, the ends of the cushions can pop up if you sit in the center. In that case, some clips or strips that help keep the cushions in place might help.

7)

Avoid big patterns or trendy colors for large upholstered pieces. The punch of pattern or hot splash of trendy color should come from the throw pillows so they can be easily substituted when you need a change.

8)

If you have 8’ (244cm) ceilings, you will want a low sofa, which gives the impression that the ceiling is taller than it is. In a room with a high ceiling, you want a high-back sofa to have a heavy presence that can hold up to the room.

9)

If you like to take naps on your sofa, a 32 (81cm) depth with 42 (107cm) with back cushions are just perfect. It will provide more space for throw pillows and for the actual nap when removing them (pillows).

10) Velvet welts look terrible! If you are covering your sofa in velvet, go without a welt, or use a cotton or linen cord in a contrasting color.

11) If you have a narrow, rectilinear room with the fireplace on the long wall, and you put the sofa facing the fireplace, you have just made the room narrower. A sofa parallel to a fireplace in a narrow room is the mark of an amateur.

12) The only advantage of large, wide arms is the ability to sit on if the sofa is full .

them

13) Karate chop pillows might be the sign of trying too hard when overdone .

14) A large sofa should always be placed in the farthest part of the room. It automatically invites you toward it.

15) When ordering a tufted back sofa, use diamond tufts for traditional living rooms, and tight, square tufts for more contemporary settings.

16) To avoid stress from fluffing backrest pillows, use a sofa with a solid back and seat.

17) Don’t be afraid of an armless sofa. You can use it in settings with multiple sofas in a room, floating in the middle of the room, or against some windows.

18) Horsehair filling is more practical than the foam, because it doesn’t break down as fast. Foam gets dry and crumbly in 10 to 12 years and will give that saggy look.

19) A sofa with decorative pillows tossed over tufting solves the eternal his-versus-hers, plush-versus-pretty sofa conundrum, because it is tailored and tidy but also delicious to sit on. Avoid tufting details with young children as the tufts collect crumbs.

20) On a sectional, always do a tight back instead of loose cushions. It will help keep the overall look from becoming overwhelming. And keep the back fairly low – around 32 (81cm). This will make the sectional feel a little less imposing.
