Photo Manipulating And Compositing Study COMPLETION TIME: 45min SOFTWARE: Photoshop, Illustrator MATERIALS: Stock image and images supplied by the client. This project had a very short amount of time because of the deadline that was projected. There wasnt really any materials to work with and in the brief there was limited direction. I took what i had, did my research and this is what I came up with. I decided to make a tutorial showing how the image was created. PG 1

THE “KNICK PHOTO MANIPULATION Step 1 RESEARCH When trying to complete a great image you must start off with great images to manipulate. I was supplied with the image for Clive Owen (the main character of the series). I had to find out what the subject was about and then find the images I wanted to use.

Step 2 FIXING THE MAIN IMAGE I wanted to give the image a dramatic look. So the first thing I did with the main image was fix the lighting. The image was sent over with a decent amount of shadow so I only had to color correct to get the effect I wanted.

Step 3 ADDING DETAIL Once the lighting and color was where I needed it to be I wanted to add a little bit more detail to the subject. to do that I copied the image to another comp. I then adjusted the shadows and highlights in the Image>Adjustments>Shadow/Highlights after I increased the shadows a bit I adjusted the HDR toning. Image>Adjustments>HDRtoning. This gave the subject a weathered more detailed look.

THE “KNICK PHOTO MANIPULATION Step 4 BLENDING THE IMAGES Once I added the detail I then copied the image from that comp and pasted the image into the original comp. I put the heavy detailed image on top of the original image. Then I changed the blending mode to Linearlight and droped the opacity to 75. This gave the image a detailed look but not to over the top it was a suttle change that added the drama to the image.

Step 5 DODGING AND BURNING The image became pretty dark from the detailed image being ontop of the original. What I did to bring out the subjects eyes and highlights was a dodge and burn technique I dodged the eyes, bridge of the nose bottom lip, and sides of the head with white. Then I added a little black to the deep shadows.

THE “KNICK PHOTO MANIPULATION Step 6 SELECTING THE RIGHT IMAGE The main image is now finished and looking movie dramatic. Now we need to find a high quality image to merge and manipulate with the main image. I chose a gory image of some blood or red substance in a sink the reason for this is I needed a image that had some white and some other color that had a high contrast. I also chose this image because I knew that this series had a lot to do with the brutality of early medical study, so to convey that type of feel I needed to add some blood.

Step 7 MERGING THE TWO IMAGES Now that I have my other image I want to work with I placed the bloody sink on top of the main image. I then changed the blending mode to overlay. The reason I chose over lay is because it knocked out the white and kept most of the blood. I then masked the bloody sink so that the stopper would not show and I warped the image as well. Once that was done all that was left was to tweak the opacity and fill of the top image.
