SCHOOL OF INTERIOR DESIGN Year: Spring 2020 Professor: Camilo Cerro In Collaboration With : Lamya S aid

6

This project is an interior design school located at the American University of Sharjah. It consists of four floors including the terrace, each of which is composed of main spaces wrapped around a long linear volume. It’s designed for ease of circulation, advanced technology to improve student experience. The studios feature interactive screens that also act as partitions, of which their transparency can be played with to create privacy between spaces and allow light.

POP-UP

RESTAURANT

A Sushi Pop-up Restaurant located in the ground floor of the Mirdif City Centre in Dubai. The project is inspired from the Japanese curtain called ‘Noren’; fabrics that genearlly act as partitions in rooms. In this space, these fabrics are emphasized with a noren installation, with its heavy usage in the entrance, that later gets elevated in the dining area to create a light atmosphere. The dining area features concave booths and a sliding table that is part of the kitchen counter, to provide a private dining experience.

After understanding the characteristics and functionality of ‘Noren’ fabrics in the previous project; the Sushi Pop-up Restaurant, a much large scale restaurant revolving around the japanese culture and cuisine is explored which is intended to be located at the ground floor of the Mirdif City Centre in Dubai. In this project too, the ‘Noren’ fabrics that intend to act as partitions in rooms. are used heavily to act as dividers between different dining spaces- main dining, casual and vip sushi dining and family dining. The noren installation, apart from serving as partitions, they continue to the ceiling to create a light atmosphere, therby concealing the hvac system above. The black polished resin flooring refelcts the noren installation to give an illusion of the fabrics dropping beyond the floor. 31

Year: Fall 2018 Professor: Maria Isabel Oliver

42

The analysis of the interior space of the bakery, Baker D. Chirico, located in Carlton, Australia is done through the means of a conceptual exploded axonometry. Moreover, a diagram that explains the use of vertical and horizontal elements in the space, such as the plywood shelving unit depicts the concept of linearity in the narrow space, as revealed in the floor plan.

46

HYBRID

After the analysis and understanding of the formal aspects, material components, and assembly pieces of the chair, S33, by Mart Stam, a ‘book container’ is developed, that stores and displays around 50 books. The project takes advantage of the qualities like dynamism and flexibility innate within the tubes to allow the book container to cantilever from the original chair.

SO / CLUB

Year: 2018 Mentor: Maria Isabel Oliver

52

The brief of the competition was to design a Junior Suite for the Sofitel Hotels that centers around a world-famous fashion designer in order to create a space that reflects the designer’s work. Michael Cinco, a Filipino fashion designer based in Dubai, is world renowned for his exquisite couture gowns. With his intricate craftsmanship and detailed juxtapositions of fabric and Swarovski crystals, Cinco has created a name for himself in the world of luxury fashion. Cinco describes his style as feminine, romantic, with a dream-like flair to it, with clothes that simply ooze luxury and timelessness.

ASSIGNMENT 11: FURNISHING

This custom furniture is a take on vintage telephone tables that combine seating with storage and mix materials. Two prominent materials used here that mimic the idea of continuity are steel Date 17.12.19 Plan and Elevataion and camel leather. Single stretch of leather acts as Scale 1 : 10 magazine holder, a counter for items to be placed 17.12.19 Plan and Elevataion on and provides seating for Date one person (a place Scale 1 : 10 flow of black to put on shoes?). The continuous steel square rods support the functions created by the leather; magazine holder, table top, seat. A drawer is suspended below the counter to enhance the feel of the furniture being lightweight.

DIGITAL FABRICATION | FACETING / FOLDING | AND PATTERN FLOOR

LAMP

Year: Fall 2019 Professor: Marcus Farr

66

This project explores techiniques of faceting/folding via laser cutting startegies. A texture is chosen, inspired from nature and carfeully applied as varying perforations to the faceted model in order to bring depth to floor lamp. The diagonal nature of the tree trunk texture chosen for the perforrations coincides with the diagonal, spiraling nature of the final iteration of the faceted surface. A six-sided base cut from a CNC router reflects the six sided facets that spirals to form the lamp. 67

This project utilizes techniques for NURBS surface modeling and additiveassembly via laser cutting strategies. A useful compelling surface found in nature is used to create a 20 x 20 x 10 cm model and made purposeful, to a ccommodate a small object such as a phone. The texture used here is inspired from Romanesco, which resembles a cauliflower. The bud makes up a logarithmic spiral, and each bud is composed of a series of smaller buds, all arranged in yet another logarithmic spiral. This self-similar pattern continues at several smaller levels. 73
