Mr. Banfield's Notes the story of design Spring 2019, we launched the first edition of Design by Jamie Banfield and with its amazing success we felt the need to expand on what we created & share our new projects with you! The last print addition flew out the doors of showrooms in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ontario and even into the arms of readers in Miami. We are very excited to be releasing the next edition that the JBD team has been working on since early winter. The new addition highlights our developing community, local artists and craftspersons while sharing their amazing stories of what make them tick. For many years, this magazine that you hold in your hands was just a thought in my head, an idea that first sparked when we were creating my first design blog, a few years ago to explore what makes for true design and what it all means to me. This digital and print version is a personal journal from the whole JBD team, showcasing our interior design projects, client's stories, inspiring local creatives and most importantly showcasing industry hacks! We came to the realization that we were missing the opportunity to share so many amazing stories that should be told. We were jokily chatting about how we

4

JA M I E BA N F I E L D.C A

could fill a whole magazine with those stories, and months later, here we are. It’s so humbling to see our accomplishments laid out in front of us, from design projects we are trusted to bring to life, the strong client relationships, to the inspiring people with stories to tell. A common question I am always asked is “what’s your story and how did you get to this point in your career?”. Passion and always asking “the WHY” to the norm has placed me here and I wouldn’t change a thing. With the support of our clients, peers, and partners we are able to do what we do. My parents have always told me that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to, and the JBD team have made this vision come to life. We are so humbled by the support of our readers, vendors and partners and are very excited to share this edition to the print and digital readers across North America!

sophisticated family home that encompasses the perfect details for this family of four's busy lifestyle. The home was designed with a drive for entertaining, family gatherings and simple home cooked dinners. The open concept everyday entertaining space was achieved by taking down a few walls in order to grow the living and kitchen space. This home showcases the perfect balance between sophisticated and relaxed. The beauty of having a large open concept space is that it allows for this kitchen to be large enough to not only function properly for one cook but two cooks at the same time. Furthermore, while cooking, the grand island in the center of the entertaining space allows for great conversation with guests! The island separates the open concept living space into more defined areas. Additionally, by adding a bold colour to the kitchen island, it creates a grounding element where guests know to gather while the chefs are in the kitchen; as well as indicating the kids’ area to wind down to do their homework before dinner. This open concept really enriches the best of both worlds of entertaining and relaxing for all parties involved.

The most important element in this kitchen is the details details details! This kitchen is all about custom details to create a wholesome look. In the eyes of design, it all comes down to the millwork to create that first impression. With face frame gables surrounding the cabinet doors & white shaker front cabinets paired with contrasting black hardware really creates a classic look. Speaking of a classic, subway tiles add to that timeless style really building on the layers and textures of this true transitional design style. The most extraordinary detail of all is the custom hood fan with a chunky edge and beveled reveals along the front face, adding simple layers of texture. To top it off, landscaping textures of wood add the final touches to the ceiling emphasizing & featuring the island. By adding a wood detail to the ceiling, the whole design becomes cohesive by tying in with other finishes of the home. Ceiling details can be super simple by adding a chase box detail & finishing the interior with wood to match. This adds the final touch of warmth to create a cohesive feel throughout the home.

FABULOUSLY

Feminine

What defines a masculine bathroom? Or a feminine bathroom you ask? Well the answer really isn’t that simple. As all the finishes, plumbing and other design details as a whole really define the overall style of the space. Just because a bathroom is identified as masculine or feminine doesn’t mean that one is meant for a males & one is meant for a female! We love personalizing a space and making it represent how you want to feel every morning you wake up! Achieving this feeling is all in the subtle details and how they work together. When thinking of the differences between a feminine bathroom and masculine bathroom you generally think of completely opposite finishes right? Wrong! Check out these two very different bathrooms where we used the same textural tile in both bathrooms to enhance the feminine and masculine qualities! It is all about layering in the correct accents.

The Feminine Bathroom Who doesn’t love a feminine bathroom? Lets’ be honest, when feminine is said often your mind goes to pink, well this isn’t the case. Clean lines, soft woods & textural elements are used to make this a cohesive feminine bathroom. All these design principles combined make for an airy dreamy space that will give you spa like vibes. The decadent light wood vanity (@the_banfield) is the first special feature of this room, with its open kick making it look like a piece of furniture rather than your standard built-in. If you’re looking for a unique piece to your bathroom, our first recommendation is to focus on is the vanity. You can either do a custom millwork piece to create a specific look or you could even purchase a pre-built unit. Restoration hardware has many pre-built vanity units to select from depending on the style you may be looking for.

10

JA M I E BA N F I E L D.C A

PHOTOGR A PH Y BY JA NIS NICOL AY

Contrast is a staple design element to use in a feminine bathroom however in a subtler way than what you’d see in a masculine bathroom. Elegant white marble porcelain adds a soft texture to this room while contrasting it with the dark textural natural marble chevron floor. The marble veining throughout the floor & wall tile places continuity within the design creating more of a peaceful approach giving you that tranquil effect that a feminine bathroom should give you. Textural elements are a must in every design style, unless of course it is minimalism that you’re after than you'd stick to almost no movement or contrast. This space is completed with its textural porcelain tile, a custom wood vanity & marble quartzite countertop creating that sophisticated feel throughout. Hints of warm tones are often used to create that feminine feel whether that be wood accents or soft metal finishes for hardware & plumbing. Natural elements always place ease to a space, earthy wood tones were key for this room to add that extra tactical element. Light white oak wood pulled in from the exterior landscapes provide that continuity & tranquil feeling. Soft warm tones of metal were pulled into the space with polished nickel plumbing & hardware used throughout. These fabulous elements are placed strategically throughout this bathroom make for a fabulously feminine getaway.

The Masculine Bathroom Masculine bathrooms can be quite moody in the overall feeling of the space, this is created by dark tones & contrast within material finishes. To achieve a masculine bathroom, you cannot be scared of having the dark accents being bold & proud! The first highlighted feature of this bathroom is the contrast of the gold faucet against the dark dramatic marble backsplash, a textural black sink and matte blue quantize countertop + sill. The bold features really set the tone here.

PHOTOGR A PH Y BY JA NIS NICOL AY

We continued to layer in contrast and textures in this posh masculine bathroom by placing gold pendants in front of a custom matte black conconcrete plaster feature wall (@darrell.morrison). This feature wall was paired with a dramatic skinny mirror that enhances the height of the room while also playing off the cylindrical shape of the adjacent pendants. The textural chevron wall tile with its dark black & gray veining and colouring really creates the perfect backdrop to the space for all these features to be layered on top of. Another contracting feature we chose to use in this bathroom was the rough textural wood vanity front on custom built matte black metal legs (Instagram: @birdmanthewelder). You can see that constrasting materials is important when wanting to achieve a masculine bathroom. Mixing metals is super-hot right now with any style you use in your home. Black is the most fitting masculine metal colour at the moment, but that doesn’t mean this is the only finish that can be used to achieve a masculine look. Don’t be scared to pair black metals with more feminine metals such as gold as used here! These meticulous details combined make this bathroom the perfect example of a masculine bathroom.

The Elegant

Ensuite

Bathroom design is something our team specializes in, whether it be a new build or renovation. We love working in complex spaces, & bathrooms always require great function & flow. The bathroom has many uses & needs to be crafted to allow space for chaotic mornings when your alarm doesn’t go off, or winding down at the end of the day in the soaker tub with candles lit accompanied by wine. In particular, the ensuite is the bathroom that gets the most attention & is usually where clients are willing to spend more money to achieve everyday opulence. One way we were able to make this space feel grand was with decadent real marble tile. The large format tile installed on the floor & walls creats a large and seamless sightline and sophistaed feel. Another luxurious feature is the solid surface Kallista (Instagram: @kallista) bathtub that is guaranteed to hold more heat allowing for a longer soak time. Please note cast iron is terribly heavy & you will need extra re-enforcements to withstand the weight of the tub. We love using texture to add depth to a space, this is no secret in design. The shower floor is a marble hexagon mosaic that matches the pattern running through the rest of the floor. With marble highlights throughout, we wanted to add a focal point to the room. The bold dark blue vanity creates contrast and visual interest to the space. Slab doors modernize this transitional bathroom, paired with polished nickel pulls to really create a glamourous vanity. Polished nickel plumbing and accessories are also a timeless choice, which offer a warmer and more elgant feel than the more standard chrome metal choice. To create the complete elegant bathroom feel, the real marble wall and floor tiles are paired with a matching classic + clean marble slab countertop. While working with natural textures and transitional plumbing, by added a sleek countertop that is only 3/4” thick add to that sophistiacted clean feel. Playing with countertop thicknesses can really add to the impact of your design by either having it as thin as humanly possible for a clean minimal look or a chunky 3” edge creating a highlight to the space. The combination of traditional marble tile & modern details of a thin countertop paired with slab doors helps to create an oasis spa feel to this ensuite.

Meet the Designer

Jamie Banfield 14

JA M I E BA N F I E L D.C A JA M I E BA N F I E L D.C A

"I love taking on projects and playing with the flow and function while redirecting the space planning. Creating a functional space always brings me back to my childhood building Lego." HOW DID YOU GET HERE? I have always had a passion for design and after finishing my interior design studies, I was employed by a millwork company where I learned all the tricks of the trade of custom millwork and customer service. This defiantly shaped the course of my career and helped develop my eye for detail. From there I put my head down and crafted the vision for Jamie Banfield Design. I remember being asked "what is your design style" and at this time I had no idea, I knew what I liked but did not understand what a set style was. Reflecting on our past portfolio we totally have a style which is West Coast inspired and can see details of myself in all of our past projects.

W H AT M A K E S YOU DIFFER ENT ? People identify with the JBD team and our voice for being approachable. We have worked hard to develop our core values and look at them each and every day. This helps guide us on easy and hard decisions each and every day. Developing a team has had its challenges; these key values have helped shape what type of team member we welcome

in the JBD family. Jamie Banfield Design is comprised of a young, talented and innovative team that is passionate about the "why". Focusing on the "why" we do what we do an not the "what" in what we are doing.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WERE DOING W H AT YOU W ER E SUPP OSED TO? My mother would tell you I was to be either a banker or an architect. My brother would tell you I would be a salesperson with a Crayola colouring box in hand. From a very young age I have always been sketching, creating towns and skyscrapers with Lego, building all kinds of furniture with my dad and assisting (not that well) with home renovations. It is such an honor to see our clients fully trust me and the team with one of their biggest investments and most personal space, their home. Welcoming us to be a part of creating something they will make up to every morning.

"It's

a job well done for the JBD team when a client describes themselves as being apart of the team. Collaboration & communication is key." JA M I E BA N F I E L D.C A

The Perfect

Closet

A RC H I T EC T U R A L D E TA I L S

When working with a closet design, don’t be afraid to add more details then just a couple rods & drawers. Closets are usually a fairly small space and often run into clients wanting to cover every square inch of the walls in millwork, in turn making the space feel even smaller and claustrophobic. Smart planning can maximize your storage space while enhancing the size of the space. When you have panoramic view such as this project it was important to expand the design to the bones of the building. With exposed architectural elements & large windows to the view, the millwork is not the only focal point in this glamorous closet.

COZY NOOK A walk-in closet is not necessarily something that much time is spent in, however it can become a cozy sanctuary by adding in a simple bench. Not only does the bench have a purpose of putting on your shoes; it also acts as an area to sit to enjoy the view in the peace & quiet, you might even sit and enjoy a book here. In a larger closet, when you have lots of floor space, a furniture piece or bench can be centered in the room to serve as the same purpose as the built in bench and allows a comfy spot to sit and relax as well.

SHOWCASE STOR AGE Every type of storage imaginable is super important to the functionality of a closet. When designing a closet, you’ll need hanging storage for long coats and hanging for short items, open cubbies for shoes and drawers for garments. This closet doesn’t only act as place to hang clothes, but also allows showcasing of items such as designer shoes and bags in open cubbies - or adjustable shelving for those of us that shop as the seasons change. If you have items that give you great joy such as a shirt from a vacation or a sports hat from that memorable hockey game, put them in an open cubbies so the can be featured on display for your own desire.

CLEAN FINISHES A grand walk-in closet can be kept simple and you don’t necessarily need to use luxurious finishes. A closet doesnt need to be something that you spend tons of money on, a lot of the time white melamine can be a great alternative for your closet millwork. Even though a closet can get messy and busy with the many items stored or those of us who take three days to fold out laundry, this white closet looks clean at almost any given time. Hard to believe we know!

B U I LT- I N S When designing you dream closet, take a moment to sit and think about what you really need. Is your current closet always messy due to organziation or clothes everywhere due to no space for a hamper? Our first recommedation when building a custom closet would be to add a tilt out hamper, this not only clears the floor to give you easeabilty of using the conformed space, but it also hides away your dirty laundry in a pleasant way.

GETTING TO KNOW LAUREN MYCROFT D E SCR IBE W H AT SENTENCE?

YOU

ONE

I am a contemporary abstract painter, working out of my home studio in Victoria BC, and a mama of two (adorable) little boys!

W H AT IS YOUR PROUD E S T MOMENT AS AN ARTIST? I don't have one stand out moment, however, being able to support myself and my family with my art is pretty damn awesome.

DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR? No. I have always wanted one go-to person. However, I find painting to be such a unique and frankly, odd profession that I have found it more beneficial to seek out guidance from a breadth of entrepreneurs. Ranging from talented friends working in creative fields, to business and art consultants.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WERE AN ARTIST? I have always interpreted things through a creative lens. Even as a child, I was far more interested in exploring the different ways I could represent what I saw vs the factual world.

W H AT INSPIR E S YOUR A RT WOR K ?

" W HEN THE PA INT MEE T S THE C A N VA S A NE W DYNAMIC EMERGES"

My work is heavily inspired by the memory of place and my surroundings; however, I see this only as a taking off point from which the materials take over. My work tends to be quite fluid (as I literally paint with liquid paint and water!) and when the paint meets the canvas a new dynamic emerges and I must work together with the medium to develop the composition. I am also obsessed with colour and am always absorbing new colour ways as I move through the world.

W H AT ' S THE B IGG E S T HUR D LE YOU HAVE OVERCOME IN THIS INDUSTRY ? Finding my own unique voice as an artist was difficult. It took making a lot of mistakes and really ugly paintings to find it! Consequently, I refuse to compromise my voice, which means not always saying yes (I’m a people pleaser at heart) to opportunities that may be temporarily rewarding, knowing I’m able to stay true to myself as an artist in the long run.

W H AT ' S NE X T IN 2020 FOR YOU? I am excited to get back to work full(ish)-time! We had our second son in 2019 so have been working around two nap schedules and in the evenings, which can be draining, I am looking forward to having more time to experiment and play in the studio to see where this leads! West Coast

Contemporary Kitchen "With this busy family full of different hobbies and activites, it was important to create optimal storage throughout the home for all types of gatherings." Situated on the Belcarra coastlines, this stunning new build is embedded in the natural landscapes of the rough ocean, lush trees and textural bedrocks. The objective of this grand kitchen was to marry well into the landscape surroundings by pulling in that Contemporary West Coast Style. With large picture windows facing the view, the focus was to make the kitchen feel as open as possible with a grand island to suit. When discussing the use of the kitchen with the clients, their need for storage and space for entertaining was a must in this open concept floor plan.

ness of the countertop to the proportion of millwork. Even though the colours and textures are minimal, the different depths of millwork and contrasting finishes layered in-between cabinets create a unique twist on this contemporary kitchen. Secret millwork details were used such as the hidden door leading into the pantry disguised as a simple tall cabinet door. It is a secret passage to an organized paradise with space for small countertop appliances, cookbooks & anything else you may want out of sight.

OPTIMAL STOR AGE Like most new kitchens, the most important detail is to make it functional with optimal storage. This massive eleven foot long island was sure to impress & give an incredible amount of space to store items. On the back side of the island is additional storage where seasonal dishware amongst other items you don’t need daily are stored away. The millwork crafted by the Banfield (Instagram: @the_banfield) is curated around the framing of the building which includes two long windows that now act as a design feature underneath the cabinets. Another popular way of accessing every inch of storage are drawers. Full extension drawers will give you full range to almost every inch of the cabinet box whereas doors would have you on your hands digging for the unknown.

FUNC TIONAL HARDWARE For great functional upper cabinets, the use of the of innovative Blum SERVO-DRIVE is a must. This mechanism is an automatic flip up and down hardware at the touch of a button. Even the doors that are over eight feet high are now easy to access! It is these little details of technology in hardware that modernize this kitchen & make it so functional. When designing a sleek modern kitchen, a clean cabinet door profile is a must to eliminate pulls or knobs. Touch latch hardware or the use of finger pulls are leading the way in many of our contemporary projects.

M I L LWO R K D E TA I L S The intricate details of this kitchen were inspired by mixing and matching textures & adding contrast with the colour selection. All while keeping a common thread of scale and balance from the thick-

"A secret passageway into an organized paradise with space for small countertop appliances and anything else your might dream up in a butlers pantry." COUNTERTOP PROFILE With this contemporary kitchen, we played with different Caesarstone Quartz (Instagram: @caesarstone) countertop thicknesses to create a subtle yet impactful design detail. With the island always being a focal point, we wanted this one to stand out in its own way yet using the same sophisticated finishes. Instead of the traditional waterfall gables mitering down both sides of the island, we decided to change it up! We did the waterfall gable the right side of the island, which allowed for more storage, while alternatively extending the overhang on the left side, adding an overhang, which created additional seating. This enhanced the central gathering point in the kitchen. To pair with this, along the perimeter, we decided to go for a thinner countertop Caesarstone profile to create a different look and give variety, giving that minimal detail that blends in with the cabinets below.

F I N I S H I N G D E TA I L S When selecting materials for this kitchen, everything was strategically designed to blend in with the surrounding landscape. When looking out into the coastline you are hit with the contrasting colours of light & dark tones reflecting & balancing together to make a picturesque view. This was all taken into consideration. When bringing the outdoors in, wood tones are a must to any west coast inspired design. These wood tones tie in with the natural hardwood flooring by Divine Flooring (Instagram: @divineflooring) making for a cohesive design throughout the open concept living space. Finally, we added in that must needed accent colour to really provide that unexpected pop & to mirror the surrounding horizon of the mountain coastline. Black was the striking colour that we decided to use to blend into our natural design while also providing the perfect contrast. The bold black upper cabinets stand out while the natural oak millwork with the subtle black inlay provides that unique twist to this contemporary west coast inspired kitchen.

Local foraging inspires elegant harvest dishes EUGENE'S ROOTS Born in Victoria, British Columbia alongside the Pacific Ocean, Chef Eugene Cheng always felt that saltwater flows through his veins. The sounds of nature and the ocean are his everyday occurrences. It was here where Eugene first learned to grow and pick fresh fruits and vegetables with his grandparents. Eugene remembers using seasonal ingredients such as squash and winter roots in December and leeks and hardy greens cooked up after the new year. Alternatively salad, greens, peas and fruit/ berries were used in the spring and summer. Eugene has always believed that the changing seasons not only brings beauty and excitement to our land, but also onto our plates. Over the years Eugene continued to follow his passion, building on his home-grown roots. He eventually moved to Vancouver where he launched his culinary career as a finalist on the TV show MasterChef Canada, season 5. The judges critiqued his food, calling it “pure genius” and even calling him “one of the most creative home cooks we’ve ever seen in all five seasons.” Inspired by the world at large, Eugene is on a culinary mission to bond people through experiencing food in unique and innovative ways. Having travelled to 75+ countries, he brings a varied arsenal of culture, flavor and technique back to his Pacific Northwest style cuisine. Although Eugene feels fortunate to have lived in Vancouver for the majority of two decades and grateful for his experiences, he always had this longing to head back home. To live close to where he was raised, his family and the open ocean. He is currently back living in Victoria working as an private chef to the mega-yacht's. This homecoming is reminding him of his roots, the simple joy of going out to pick fruits and vegetables to cook with. With winter approaching, Eugene took the opportunity to explore his new natural playground and connect with nature by foraging between towering douglas-firs before the first frost. “Our constantly evolving landscape gives a chance for chefs to showcase fresh, local ingredients.” – Euegene Cheng.

With attention to global warming on the rise, most readers value the concepts of sustainability and seasonality. Keeping these two concepts in mind, anyone can develop as a home cook. Not only will in-season items guarantee quality through freshness and taste, they ensure minimal impact to our environment (without sitting for weeks or sometimes months in gas chambers and having been transported thousands of miles). They also tend to be friendlier on the wallet too! Cooking with the seasons challenge you to create new dishes on a regular basis. You may create your own dishes or find a recipe utilizing the seasonal ingredients versus using a recipe and then searching for the listed ingredients. The recipe shared today keeps the above concepts in mind by using common winter ingredients of the Pacific North West found at any local supermarket. Served as a warm salad, this is a perfect dish for a crisp winter evening. JA M I E BA N F I E L D.C A 25 JA M I E BA N F I E L D.C A

BASTED LEEKS + PICKLED SHALLOT VINAIGRETTE

PHOTOGR APHY BY

THE RECIPE (SERVES 4)

• 6 leeks (or 8 x 2" stems with roots and tops removed) • 4 tbsp beef tallow* or butter • 2 whole cloves of garlic • Parsley leaves

PICKLED SHALLOTS & VINAIGRETTE

JA M I E BA N F I E L D.C A

1. Bring a pot of lightly salted water to a gentle boil and add the leaks. Reduce + simmer for 2 minutes. Drain and place leeks on paper towels vertically to dry.

3. Separate the vinaigrette from the pickled shallot mixture into another prep bowl and add the parsley leaves.

*Beef tallow is a rendered beef fat that you can find at your local butcher shop

26

STEPS

2. While the leeks are drying, combine all the ingredients for the pickled shallots in a small bowl. Let sit, stirring a couple of times, let the mixture marinate for a minimum of 30 minutes.

BASTED LEEKS

• 2 tbsp capers • 3 tbsp apple cider vinegar • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice • 2 tbsp clear honey • 2 tbsp canola oil • 1 tbsp prepared whole grain mustard

ERIC DISERO

• 2 anchovies thinly sliced (optional) • 2 large shallots peeled + thinly sliced (150 grams) • sea salt and cracked black pepper

4. Heat a pan to med-high and add the beef tallow* or butter. Once melted add the garlic and leeks. Being careful of spatter, lightly tilt the pan to the side of your dominant hand so the foaming butter pools. Using a soup spoon, gently spoon the bubbling fat over the leeks. Repeat this process after rotating the leeks until brown on both sides. Avoid continuously rotating the leeks as this will overcook them and prevent them from browning. 5. Using tongs, remove the cooked leeks and place them into parsley salad and vinaigrette. Discard the remaining fat and garlic. 6. While still hot, plate the leeks + parsley one on top of another per plate, sprinkle with some finishing salt. Spoon or pinch a little bit of the pickled shallots and place on top of the leeks. Serve warm. The pickled shallots and vinaigrette is great for many uses from salads, used on top of proteins such as steak and seafood, and as a condiment such as in a sandwich. This easily prepared accompaniment is sure to impress guests!

designer hacks

What does the perfect pantry mean to you? For us it means functional storage that no one can see where you can hide the mess away in the midst of your holiday dinner party. It’s the space you want to be hidden from guests, yet it makes logical sense for all your items. From the kitchen standpoint, you would never even know that this pantry exists. It’s the clients hidden away sanctuary that is behind secret doors within tall millwork. This isn’t always achievable, but we would always recommend your pantry being behind closed doors. Here are our 5 designer tips to help you create that the perfect designer pantry.

A D J U S TA B L E S H E LV I N G You can never predict exactly what you’ll be storing in your pantry, and want this flexability for future items. Adjustable shelving are a must for pantry storage as some shelves may be used for storing away a food processor where other shelves are for your bulk items from Costco.

ACCESSIBLE STOR AGE The cabinets that are above your head are often hard to access. Blum SERVO DRIVE is a hardware mechanism that with just a touch of your fingers the door opens + closes automatically giving you full cabinet access! Another fun detail you can add is a ladder so you can get a full view of the interior cabinet and get what you need with ease.

PR EP SPACE Having a small prep sink with counterspace can be very beneficial. Waking up in the morning and thinking about dinner, meat can be pulled out, and instead of occupying the sink in your main kitchen it can be tossed in the pantry sink to defrost out of sight.

PULL OUT STOR AGE For the lower cabinets of your pantry space, pull out drawers make for easy access without having to crawl on the floor digging into the back of your cabinets. You can pull them out to full extension, giving you a full view of all the contents. If you know you will be storing items that are quite heavy, make sure to invest in heavy duty drawer slides!

COUNTER SPACE Usually when you think of a pantry it consists of tons of tall storage with loads of shelving, however we suggest adding some counterspace if possible. This will allow for extra prep space, as before that dinner party you may not want your kitchen to be a mess. You can also get your appetizers organized behind closed doors & when your guests come in you can bring them out like magic!

Perfect Balance

Modern Elegance "This full home renovation was catered to this family's busy lifestyle and transformed the living space into the perfect social hub of the home." This full home renovation was catered for a family's busy lifestyle and transformed the living space into the perfect social hub of the home. With a desire to create a warm, modern space that matched the client’s lifestyle. A space where the family could gather, watch their favourite movies, enjoy a meal together and also entertain all their friends and extended family. Functionality was key! Knowing that the living + kitchen space would be the center of all activities; it was important to provide lots of storage and organization for a clean sophisticated design. This was achieved in the custom millwork designed in the living room around the fireplace and an adjacent custom desk space. With a family of four, it goes without saying you accumulate a lot of stuff but don’t necessarily want to see it all. We provided multiple storage solutions to conveniently tuck away the mess! The millwork, designed by The Banfield (@the_banfield), incorporates open shelving with recessed LED lights where cherished family items can be showcased while tucking everything else away behind beautiful wood veneer doors. At first glance the millwork seems quite simple but it’s not until you get closer you can truly appreciate the small details and craftmanship. That is what really makes this design shine. From the detailed reveals around the fireplace and cabinet doors to the sleek black metal craftmanship by Birdman the Welder (@birdmanthewelder), it is truly a work of art. Layering soft, warm natural wood and marble stone helps creates that sophisticated modern look the clients desired. Just off of the living room a NanaWall system was installed to open up the wall to the back yard and patio (@nanawallsystems) so the party can easily spill into the backyard. This really added to that open concept living by letting in lots of natural daylight and adding a seamless flow throughout the space. Successful design concepts always revolve around our client's daily routine and function to make all of our client's lives easier which allows for our clients to fall madly in love with their home.

Get the Look

Living Room The secret to “getting the look” is knowing your lifestyle and how you live in your home. In this living room, function and flexibility is key for this sophisticated family with a love for entertaining. By picking furnishings that can serve dual purposes, this created a space that was cohesive and luxurious. The clean and simple elements with strong attention to detail is what really makes this design look so sharp. The millwork crafted by the Banfield (@the_banfield) and the custom metal fireplace surround, by Birdman the Welder (@birdmanthewelder), and thick open shelving with integrated recessed lighting were created to showcase the clients cherished pieces. Marble stone around the fireplace paired with the warm wood and “The Frame TV” effortlessly transforms this space from a sophisticated Living Room that’s perfect to entertain in, to a cozy, relaxing family room where you can curl up on the couch and watch your favourite tv shows. To make this design all come together, the furnishings selected complimented the family's aesthetic and lifestyle. The clients were willing to invest in their furniture, so it wasn’t only stylish and comfortable, but durable as well. A comfortable, low profile sofa was the splurge in the room. You don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort with this sofa from Restoration Hardware. To provide extra function to the space, we matched the desk chair and a secondary seating area to the dining chairs. This allowed the furniture to have a cohesive feel while also being able to be repurposed in the dining room for a big dinner party. Those fold up chairs can stay stored in the basement! This family home showcases the perfect balance between sophisticated and relaxed.

Featuring strong lines and distinctive character, The BANFIELD strikes a perfect balance between modern style and rustic elements. Designed and crafted in British Columbia The BANFIELD uses only the highest quality materials that are reflective of Western Canada’s natural resources. The BANFIELD offers the perfect balance between modern and rustic elements, Custom designed and innovative craftsmanship. From traveling with suppliers, attending local design shows & speaking engagements, often those rainy Vancouver days can consume the mood at the #JBD office. Although I love what I do, there are a few essential items that I must have to keep me relaxed & calm during the chaos.

VITRUVI DIFFUSERS

An Artisan Collection know as The BANFIELD offers a casual elegance with innate character, strong lines with smart classic looks and timeless form and function. The Collection brings together design, function, and durability, while providing a superior product that will stand the test of time. Technicians, and red seal craftsmen, have carefully produced The BANFIELD with the highest standards, resulting in one of the finest custom cabinetry lines on the market today.

With many things going on it can be hard to wind down in the evening; however, Vitruvi (@vitruvi) products are a must in my home andoffice to ease the mind. The reason I recommend diffusers are because it can be a mood enhancer as well as add other health benefits depending on the essential oil selected. For times when I'm traveling, Vitruvi also has roll-ons and mists which are a great sleep aids, or a waking mist for those long rainy days. With many different colours & its minimalistic design, I'm sure you will find a Vitruvi diffuser that fits in with your home décor. If you’re just starting out with a diffuser, think of the benefits you are wanting to get out of it; such as helping you sleep, relieving anxiety or even just wanting your house to smell good. Certain ingredients in an essential oil can help assist with those needs such as lavender for falling asleep, grapefruit and other citrus scents for boosting your mood or tea tree for your immunity. If you don't know where to start with essential oils, try out Vitruvi's essential bundle.

FOLIAGE GROUPINGS Whether in a living space, your bedroom, or a bathroom; adding plants and greenery will have such a comforting effect in any space. Greenery is always a great way to liven your space throughout any season. However, since plants come & go with seasons, they are a great way to transition and update your home. It’s that same idea of bringing nature into your home for a lively yet calming feeling.

TEXTUR AL ACCENTS We all love to be cozy when it’s raining outside; adding textural elements throughout can add extra warmth to your home. As humans, we love being connected to the textures of the outdoors whether that be the texture of a stone fireplace or a chunky knit rug to cuddle under. An easy way to add comfort to your home is through these textural accents. Everyone loves to cozy up under a chunky blanket in the rainy days, especially on the West Coast when it rains over half the year. Try adding a faux fur pillow or a wool area rug to add more depth to your space.

The BANFIELD team has curated the perfect bathroom furniture for any bathroom! These vanities are inspired by our surrounds, crafted along the Fraser Valley it was easy to pull inspiration from the surrounding trees, mountains, lakes and water-falls around the Pacific North West Coast. Memories of growing up in British Columbia and what made these places special. We looked.

OPEN CONCEPT LIVING The “Master Suite” title is created in the idea of it being in the largest bedroom of the home, however with this ensuite we are meaning master as in its grand open concept. This space is completely open to the sleeping area, there are no doors enclosing the bathroom to allow for that opulent feeling. A fully open bathroom you say? This may seem crazy but with views like this you don’t want anything to be behind closed doors. The suite is open to the panoramic view surroundings, not only through windows but with an opening in the millwork allowing for a straight view to the ocean when standing at the vanity or even from the shower. Asides from the view, this stunning vanity is the focal point of the bathroom. The large vanity accompanied with two sinks, floats off the floor creating a seamless sightline allowing for your eyes to carry out the window to the landscape. Dividing the two sinks, is a low make-up console presenting a pop-up mirror within a drawer for ease, all designed to not obstruct the breathtaking view. The feeling of this space was curated by bringing in natural elements; white oak was selected to marry in with the textured driftwood washed up on the surrounding shores. Wood is one of our favourite textures to bring into a space to warm it up & give is sophisticated vibe. Featuring strong lines and distinctive character, this Banfield (Instagram: theBanfield) vanity strikes a perfect balance between a modern style and contemporary elements. The Banfield Collection offers a wide variety of finishes to compliment any space in your home & are able to customize any design to fit your needs. This line of millwork is inspired by the natural beauty of the pacific northwest.
