We move responsibly towards a better tomorrow

At Lidl Hellas, our Corporate Responsibility strategy is fully integrated into our broader business strategy, grounded in the values of sustainability and responsibility. We recognize our role across the value chain and are committed to actions aligned with ESG criteria, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Our actions and goals are built around six strategic pillars under the triple bottom line of “Good for our planet”, “Good for people”, “Good for you”, creating positive impact for all.

Good for our planet

At Lidl Hellas, we are committed to doing our best for the environment, aiming to create a sustainable future.

We set ambitious environmental targets, which we continuously monitor and evaluate, applying practices that reduce our environmental footprint while raising consumer awareness.

RESET PLASTIC STRATEGY 2025 NET-ZERO STRATEGY BY 2050

LIFE CLIVUT PROGRAMME OF AUTH

SCIENCE BASED TARGETS USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES

Climate protection as a strategic pillar

Climate protection is one of the six key strategic pillars of Lidl Hellas. In 2020, as a member of the Schwarz Group, we joined the “Science Based Targets” initiative, committing to adopting science-based climate goals. Through this initiative, we aim to encourage our suppliers - who are responsible for 75% of product-related emissions - to set their own climate targets by 2026.

Net-Ζero Strategy by 2050

Our Net-Zero strategy establishes clear targets, by adopting measures aimed at preventing, reducing, or offsetting CO2 emissions. We have also developed a comprehensive action plan to reduce both direct and indirect emissions, while continuing to implement initiatives that have an immediate positive impact on the climate and contribute to sustainable development.

REset Plastic Strategy 2025

Our plastic strategy, “REset Plastic 2025”, involves five 5 action areasREduce, REdesign, REcycle, REmove and Research. Through this strategy, we commit to adopting best practices. As one of the largest food retailers, we recognize our responsibility to the environment and aim to reduce plastic use by 30% by 2025. In addition, we increase the average recycled plastic content of our private label product packaging to 25%.

“Plastic Free Greece” campaign: cleaning up coastal and underwater areas

Lidl Hellas’ “Plastic Free Greece” campaign continued in 2023 for the 4th consecutive year, reinforcing our environmental protection efforts. This initiative is part of the national “Greece without single-use plastics” campaign, implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Energy and the Athanasios C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation. In the summer of 2023, in collaboration with these valuable partners, we managed to carry out 13 coastal and 8 underwater cleanups in areas including Agios Nikolaos Crete, Zakynthos, Santorini, Chios, Aegina and Lake Kerkini. Our goal is to protect the marine ecosystem and the Greek coastline, while reducing our environmental footprint from singleuse plastics.

Since the initiative’s launch in June 2020, we have completed a total of 39 coastal and 30 underwater cleanups, with the participation of over 260 volunteers, collecting a total of 5,871 kg of litter.

Development of green spaces

To develop green spaces, Lidl Hellas supported the “LIFE CLIVUT” programme, an initiative of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). Through this programme, tree planting activities were conducted in the urban area, contributing to the fight against climate change and the promotion of urban greenery. Specifically, we supported the planting of 120 new trees and shrubs in the courtyards of five schools in the Municipality of Kalamaria, enhancing greenery in local communities.

Commitment to Renewable Energy Sources

At Lidl Hellas, we continue to support green energy in 2023 by using 100% renewable electricity in all our facilities. With ongoing investment in renewable energy, we are expanding the installation of photovoltaic systems and electric vehicle charging stations at all our stores and warehouses. These actions intensify our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.

In 2023, 11 of our stores were equipped with rooftop photovoltaic systems, and we completed the installation and operation of photovoltaic systems in our warehouses in Kalyvia, Attica, and Sindos, Thessaloniki.

In addition, we prioritize the installation of electric vehicle charging stations at both our offices and stores. So far, 28 of our stores have charging stations, with plans to expand to an additional 29 stores by 2024.

Sustainability as a key pillar

Sustainability is a core pillar of our strategy, and through these initiatives we aim to minimize the environmental impact of our activities. We actively contribute to environmental protection because it is “Good for our Planet”.

Good for people

At Lidl Hellas, caring for our fellow human beings is a top priority. Every day we strive to contribute to a better and more sustainable future for all, by enhancing living and working conditions, while addressing modern social needs.

We support organizations and charities through products, sponsorships, and donations, because the well-being of society is non-negotiable for us.

SOCIAL HACKATHON

Support of social actions

As part of this commitment, we continued for the 4th consecutive year our partnership with the Social Solidarity Network & Relief and the Reception & Relief Centre Solidarity Centre of the Municipality of Athens (K.Y.A.A.D.A.). Through this collaboration, we provided products worth 400,000€ to support families in need. This initiative helped 340 families living in poverty to cover their basic needs, as well as supported the Multipurpose Homeless Centre of the Municipality of Athens.

Promoting social innovation

By actively promoting social innovation, we supported the 3rd “Social Hackathon” innovation marathon, in collaboration with the Athanasios C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation and the Ministry of Development and Investment. The goal was to encourage institutions and businesses, as well as the society, to create innovative applications with social impact.

Supporting children and families

At the same time, we continue for the 8th year to support the Child and Family Support Centre in Nea Makri and for the 2nd year in Epanomi, Thessaloniki, that function under “The Smile of the Child” Organisation, by providing them with properties. With regular donations and the continuous support of the Centres, we help restore family cohesion and provide a safe environment for children. Additionally, we donated €120,000 for the “Creative Activities for Hospitalized Children” programme, which is active in six hospitals in Athens, Thessaloniki and Patras.

Social contribuition during the holidays

In the spirit of holidays, we continue our tradition of social contribution. In 2023, we offered 2,500 “love meals” to vulnerable social groups during Easter in Athens and Thessaloniki and 7,900 meals during Christmas, in collaboration with local authorities and organizations. We also supported 320 residents of Thessaloniki living below the poverty line by providing essential food items.

Cooperation with UNICEF & ActionAid

Recognizing the importance of addressing violence against children, we partnered with UNICEF, donating 100,000€ to support the “Together against violence against children” programme. Through initiatives like the PlaySafe app and the Media Professionals’ Guide, we help protect children from all forms of violence.

Our social contribution extends further, as we continue to support ActionAid and the Power on Your Plate education programme, encouraging students to adopt healthy eating habits, understand responsible consumption and reduce food waste.

Investing in the future of young people

At Lidl Hellas, we are investing in the future of young people by supporting CTY Greece for the 10th consecutive year. We have funded 25 full or 50 partial scholarships for primary, secondary and high school students, with total contributions exceeding 600,000€ since the beginning. We are further strengthening the programme by offering children with academic potential the opportunity to participate in CTY Greece’s summer programmes.

Our Commitment to social contribution

Social contribution is at heart of our company values. We are committed to continuing to act responsibly, promoting equality and inclusion, and building a better society for everyone.

Good for you

At Lidl Hellas, our commitment to providing a safe, friendly and nondiscriminatory working environment is non-negotiable. Our goal is for every employee to feel comfortable being themselves.

Through comprehensive seminars and e-learnings, such as those on Diversity, Inclusion and Workplace Harassment, we cultivate a climate of equality. In addition, we have implemented a robust Anti-Violence and Harassment Policy, which focuses on both prevention and the effective management of incidents, ensuring full support for our people.

LIDL UP: LEARN & WORK

Commitment to equality

To further strengthen our commitment, we introduced the statement “#teamLidl, together in equality”, a holistic declaration that underscores the Management’s dedication to an environment of equality and inclusion. This commitment extends beyond our employees to the broader community, highlighted by our participation as a Gold Sponsor at Athens Pride 2023, where we proudly celebrated Diversity and Inclusion.

Support of our employees

In line with this commitment, we ensure that equality is supported in the personal lives of our employees as well. We have implemented a hybrid working model that enhances flexibility, and offer additional benefits to new parents, such as extra days of paternity leave. Our dedication to gender equality has been recognized with the “SHARE” Equality Label, the first of its kind in Greece, awarded to companies that promote work-life balance.

In addition, we provide counseling support to our people and their family members through an anonymous 24hour telephone line, in collaboration with a specialized external provider.

LIDL UP: LEARN & WORK Training Programme investing in young people

At the same time, we continue to support the innovative Lidl UP: Learn & Work programme, an educational initiative that combines theoretical knowledge with practical work experience in the retail sector. The programme, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, the public Experimental School S.A.E.C. of Glyfada and the Hellenic-German Chamber, offers young people the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and work experience. With remuneration throughout their studies and a certified degree from the E.O.P.P.E.P., graduates are given the opportunity to be employed at Assistant Store Managers positions. In this way, we empower the new generation and invest in the future of retail and the country.

Our Commitment to the future

At Lidl Hellas, our investment in people is an investment in the future. Through our actions and programmes, we create real value for society and the next generation.
