Choosing and Caring for Your Fence

Deciding on a fence style is one of the first and most important steps when choosing how to enclose your yard or property. There are some things to consider when beginning the search for the perfect style of fence. For fencing in large acreage, a three-rail fence is a beautiful way to enclose the property. For the residential yards, a shadowbox, picket, or plank fence with the planks running horizontally or vertically adds a nice touch. On larger residential yards, a nice picket fence in either pine or cedar would be beautiful as well. You can also add trim to your fence, however, on large runs, will people notice or see it? On smaller fences that enclose just a portion of the yard or where you entertain is where the style, trim and design work would really stand out, look good, and make a statement.

STAIN OR PAINT

Once your fence is installed, care is needed to preserve the wood itself as well as the color. Pine is blonde with blues and grays, while cedar is white with shades of red. Both are beautiful but the color will fade if not taken care of properly. Applying a stain or a coat of paint every couple of years is a great way to achieve this and seal your fence. Pressure washing your fence once a year will help as well. Remember, you can paint over stain, but you cannot stain over paint.

There are countless ways to make your fence unique such as, having the posts showing with the panels inset or adding trim around the edges of the panels to make a bit of a 3D effect, allowing the panels to stand out.
