SPAIN THE MARKET
Spain is without doubt one of the most interesting wine producing countries at present. The quality over recent years has increased whilst prices have remained stable. The regionality and diversity of grape varieties and styles being exported to the UK now make them a country that has so much more to offer than just Rioja. Not that there is anything wrong with Rioja it’s just that there is so much more worth discovering. The 2011 harvest was generally very ggod in quality terms with a mild spring encouraging vine growth, a cool summer and a hot dry harvest. The only area noticeably down on production was Galicia. Eden’s Spanish selection has grown with the market place, we are now offering fresh clean zippy whites from Castilla and the iconic Rias Baxis, we also included a barrel fermented white Rioja which simply bursts with toasty oak and fresh apple fruit. The red selection has been broadened Asturias out with Oviedo a fantastic value Gran Reserva San Sebastian Santiago from Carinena, and a couple of ubiquitous Rioja’s that really Rías doBaixas over deliver for the money. CHILE THE MARKET
To most Chile is regarded as a ‘New World’ wine nation but interestingly, heritage and production can clearly be traced back to the 16th century. Chile’s natural mountain and ocean boundaries has left it relatively isolated from other parts of the world; the benefit of this being that it has kept the country free of many vine diseases. Also due to the multiple climates that can be found in this long thin country, it is often called the winemakers paradise. With up and coming areas like Bio Bio and Limari producing evermore complex and exciting wines, it’s no surprise to see why sales of this country’s wine continue to grow year on year in the UK. USA THE MARKET
The USA’s share of the UK market continues to grow, and has long been dominated by the state of California which produces around 94% of the country’s wine. For many years the UK consumer has appreciated California’s rich, fruity entry wines and its top estate Cabernet, Syrah and Chardonnays. Now however, with the increasing demand for more elegant and lighter alcohol wines, the previously little known Pacific northwest states are making headway into international markets. With a style of their own these wines offer something genuinely different and a natural extension to the US wine category.

With a heritage of winemaking brought by the Spanish and Italian immigrants who settled there, coupled to the excellent climate, there was no question that Argentina would be able to produce wine however; the early days were concerned only with bulk. Strangely it is with an originally French grape that they have made their name in recent years. Malbec has been so popular that to the casual observer its European heritage has almost been forgotten. it is Argentina’s signature grape. Quality is now the watch-word and with production centring on the high and arid plains of Mendoza, Argentina is making the world sit up and notice with excellent, food-friendly wines.

The Latour family have long been established in Burgundy’s wine trade. They began as vinegrowers in the village of Aloxe-Corton as early as 1768 and went on to establish today’s business, Maison Louis Latour, in 1797. Today they are one of the region’s most famous names creating wines from their own 50 hectare domaine in the Côte d’Or and from grapes and wines purchased through the negociant arm of the business. The company has been in family ownership for 11 generations and is now led by the 7th Louis Latour. He is ably supported by Chief winemaker Jean Charles Thomas, and Denis Fetzmann and Boris Champy who run the Domaine.
