The better bap & baguette business
TM
What is BAP? BAP is a successful chain of sandwich and baguette fast food and coffee shops that is rapidly expanding across the UK. Established ten years since 2005, we have served many thousands of happy customers better and more affordable, fresh and great tasting baguettes, coffees and superior snacks to enjoy in-store or to take away. What we do is simple; how we do it is simply brilliant!

A better bap & baguette business. Every delicious item offered on our menu was designed to be a better British alternative to the soulless American offerings of others. Our bread is made to a British recipe
Our fillings are sumptuous
Our salads and vegetables are fresher
Our coffee is fantastic without the fuss
...the better to delight British taste buds – baked fresh every 4 hours for the best taste.
...made to our own secret recipes fresh from our own kitchens, so are tastier than the massproduced factory fare of some of our competition.
...because they are all sourced from local suppliers who in turn get them fresh every day from local markets.
...we use fabulous coffee and highquality bean-tocup machines, so customers get great taste without the wait (and you enjoy more profit).

And BAP’s service is simpler. Customers can choose what they want, how they want it and how high to pile it in our delicious baguettes. We offer baps, wraps and baguettes. Our baguettes come in 3 sizes (small, medium and mega!). Each size of baguette has a single price – no matter what the fillings. And the same follows for our great-value meal deals; each sized meal-deal has a single price no matter what baguette is chosen.

Tasty food for a tasty business. At BAP, we like to keep things simple; Great food from fresher ingredients with better value and less of the faff of our American cousins BAP is ‘straight-talking’ and our business better for it, so you can earn more: • Our stores are smart, warm and comfortable – And because our store designs are simple, they cost less for you to set-up and offer a friendlier atmosphere than the brash designs of others. • Our ingredients are fresher and from local suppliers – so you don’t need to wait for deliveries from far away factories and have more control of your own store’s food costs. • Our image is honest and clear – so you will not pay over the odds to sustain the megalithic brand advertising required by others. So lower costs and more potential profit. These all keep costs down, so you can get your new store up and running with a good turnover quicker, for less investment and with the opportunity for better early profits. 7

So you can earn more. Our own stores prove that you can target over £250,000 per annum in a standard location1. Discover what your BAP could make. Our average ticket (spend per person) in existing stores is £4.50, so to make £250,000 you need only serve 178 persons per day on a 6 day week. The BAP lifestyle. BAP recognises that franchisees are different. We value you all equally and will work hard to tailor your territory and franchise package to best suit the personal and financial rewards you individually want to achieve as part of the BAP family. Individual store franchisees
Area-Developer franchisees
Master franchisees
Some of you will simply want a good honest business of one family-run store that fits better with your lifestyle and family and provides you with a healthy income year on year.
Some will want to create a growing portfolio of several BAP stores in an expanding territory, with aspirations for ÂŁmulti-million turnovers and a burgeoning amount of profit.
Others will want to secure a region where they can be leaders in the BAP brand and develop several of their own BAP stores whilst rolling out many more units to independent sub-franchisees. Master franchisees essentially manage a region – taking a percentage of the joining fees of each unit they help open and a percentage of the management fees of each unit they manage.

The BAP promise on territory. We know that some of our competition can be a little greedy about the number and location of stores that they open and we want to be different, fairer and more honest. The BAP territory promise: • That we will never open another BAP store directly next to or opposite your store (unless, of course, you want to yourself).
• So we offer true exclusivity: Single store franchisees get a fair exclusion radius on their street; Are Developer and Master Franchisees get a geographical area big enough to support the number of stores they agree to open. • We will always give first-established franchisees the first right of refusal on the opening of another BAP store nearby their area of exclusivity2. • We will always remain chiefly more interested in the quality of our franchised network and the food it serves, than in the number of stores we open.

The BAP market. The size of the sandwich3 market has increased dramatically over the past ten years. It’s estimated that consumers in the United Kingdom buy around 2 billion of them every year worth around £3.5 billion. As a comparison the pizza market is only valued at £1 billion. Around 16% of these sales (i.e. £560 million) are from dedicated sandwich and coffee shops such as BAP. No other daytime snack is as popular as the sandwich. We eat more sandwiches than any other kind of fast food snack, and that includes burgers and even crisps.
Why do customers choose BAP? Customers like BAP because it is a warmer, friendlier and more honest British brand – better serving British taste buds with great food, fresh ingredients, hassle-free ordering and better value. You want a great baguette? Choose the size of freshly baked British bread and in one simple price pile it high with exactly what you want from fresh ingredients. You want a decent coffee? We’ll make you a great one – without you needing to learn Italian!

What set-up does the business need? BAP stores may vary in size depending on location: • Larger sit-in and takeaway units in locations with lower high-street rents and higher footfall (1,500ft+). • Smaller sit-in and takeaway units in locations with higher rents and good footfall (700-800ft+). • Takeaway-only units or counters to serve premium venues (such as stadiums, service stations, airports etc). BAP Head Office will advise and help you in your search for the best location and premises. In some places, secondary locations with lower rents may be nearly as busy as the more expensive high-street premises and so yield more profit. Most stores will start with an operation of at least three staff – but these may be family members in family-run stores. Equipment and store fit out: BAP help make your set-up as cheap and painless as possible because we help you find the premises, to design and choose how to refit them and install all branding, displays and equipment you need in our value-for-money ‘turnkey’4 package. 17

‘Turnkey’ simply means that we provide almost everything so that when it’s in place, all you need to do is ‘turn the key’ in the door of your new business and get started trading.

What does the franchise COST? We are more interested in getting good franchisees for the BAP brand than making money up front – so we have made the franchise package as affordable as possible. So you can judge the brilliant value we offer above our competitors (many of whom charge twice as much!) The franchise fee for each store is only £19,995 including all of your training, food safety and health and safety training, manuals, corporate set-up, launch-marketing, microsite (website) and some elements of branding, uniforms, software and office equipment. There is a discount for Area Developers buying more than one-store upfront and a further significant discount for Master Franchisees buying the right to open and or subfranchise multiple units (minimum of 10) in a larger region. An average full sized store will cost around £50,000 to £70,000 to fit-out (But this may be less for smaller units) Banks may lend 50% (subject to status), thus reducing your minimum personal investment to as little as £37,5005. You will be able to reclaim any VAT on joining fees should you become VAT registered and we will help to get you advice on this. Ongoing management fees are only 8% and marketing fund only 0.5%. 19

Do you need any experience? If you are already experienced in the food industry and looking to move to your own business you will obviously have a good head-start, especially if you have knowledge of fast-food and coffee-shop business in your area. But experience is not necessary; because ours is a business where those that are friendly and hardworking and that have decent time and organisational skills can thrive – whatever their background. We will train you in every aspect of running our business well; then we ensure that you can put what you have learned into practice by mentoring you in your own area once you start trading. We even allow you to get a taster of what our business is like before you sign up and pay for the franchise, by offering committed prospective franchisees an ‘induction day’ so that they can get a taste for the business and a good idea of whether or not it suits their skills before their final decision to join us.

BAP support. We understand that it is a significant step moving from being an employee to becoming the owner of a new business. You can rest assured that most franchisees have made the transition successfully with 92% of all franchisees reporting that their business was profitable in the BFA/NatWest Franchising Survey of 2013. Our franchise support team are all experienced in helping you make the transition to business owner and (unlike those of some of our competitors) all have extensive experience in fast-food businesses at the front-line to better support your success in our industry. We don’t make money unless you do. Our only ongoing profit from franchising is from our Management Service Fees and because they are a percentage of your gross profit with NO minimum amount, we only earn when you earn. So giving you the very best support makes sense – because our success is tied to yours.

All contact will be in the strictest confidence and there’s no hard-sell, no cost and no obligation to finding out more. We also run a number of ‘Discovery Days’ where you can come and find out more about BAP in an informal way (and try some of our delicious food!) amongst a group of like-minded prospects, if you prefer that to a one-to-one meeting. We look forward to hearing from you, The Franchise Team, BAP Franchise.
