127TH ANNUAL MFDA CONVENTION • MAY 22-24
From the MFDA President Jeff Hartquist, MFDA President
Welcome to the 127th Annual Minnesota Funeral Directors Association Convention! For 127 years, members from across the state have come together for education, to explore the exhibit hall, and to reunite with our colleagues. We appreciate your support of our professional association and most of all for your attendance at this convention. We’re proud to offer Minnesota CEUs in all categories required by the State of Minnesota. It has been an honor to serve MFDA this past year as your President and to preside over this outstanding convention. The MFDA staff, the Convention Committee, and many of our suppliers have come together to plan this great event. Thank you to this year’s convention sponsors! Please take time to check out the sponsor list on this page and tell them thank you for their sponsorship. We wouldn’t have a convention without their support. The MFDA Fabulous Casino Night on Monday will be a great time and an opportunity to get to know others, plus renewing old acquaintances. On Tuesday afternoon, I encourage you to attend one of the most significant events at our convention: the Service of Remembrance. This is a time when we show respect to the families and remember those fellow Funeral Directors who have died this past year.

Open Forum with the Minnesota Department of Health MDH Vital Records/Mort Sci Section Staff (1 CEU Regulations & Ethics) This interactive session includes a panel format with MDH program subject-matter experts. They will provide brief overviews on program hot topics that impact the industry and then we’ll open the floor for to the audience to pose questions to the panel and entertain discussion. Information will likely include MR&C programming and enhancements, legislative changes, projects and pain points, among other important topics.
(1 CEU Professional Practices) When our to-do lists have more than ten items on them (all priority), when the phone is ringing constantly (or barely ringing at all), when we’ve had too many fighting families in arrangements, or buried too many children recently, when we find ourselves snapping at our staff or our spouse, when we dread going into work or can’t wait for time-off (and our week just started), when we find ourselves buried in social media or a bottle of (insert alcoholic beverage here), maybe you’re just a tad bit stressed out. Managing the stress of business is crucial to staying in business. Funeral service is stressful work, necessary work, retaining good funeral service is good business. This workshop gives owners and their staff definitive, authentic and sustainable tools to manage the stresses of everyday life and the traumatic stresses of providing professional caregiving to traumatized and grieving people. Coral Popowitz, MSW, LGSW, is executive director of Children’s Grief Connection, and has established a private practice working with children and families for over twenty-five years. She has presented at regional, national, and international conferences on the subjects of trauma and grief.

The MFDA LEADERSHIP ACADEMY experience enables both experienced and emerging leaders to excel – now and into the future. Participants will learn leadership concepts and proven techniques, as well as gain important insights into the Minnesota Funeral Directors Association. The next LEADERSHIP ACADEMY will meet six times in 2017-2018 with graduation at the MFDA Annual Convention in May 2018. This program will teach you skills that will enhance both your funeral home and the impact in your community. You will learn strategies for personal growth and organizational development that will help you and your funeral home. You will build lasting relationships with classmates, fellow leaders in your profession. Your classmates today will be the people you call on tomorrow for advice, support, or to share a humorous moment.
