About this Publication
The Minnesota/North Dakota Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors produces a yearly directory to provide members with a valuable source of qualified contractors. We are proud to present this 2023 edition and encourage you to use this as an important tool for your construction team.
This directory lists member firms as of April 1, 2023. Classified listings for subcontractors and suppliers conform with the Construction Specification Institute (CSI) standards. This widely recognized CSI format enables users to efficiently locate specific trade areas.
The publication of this directory would not be possible without the support of our many advertisers. We sincerely appreciate their patronage and encourage you to mention you saw their ad in the ABC Membership Directory as you utilize their business services. This directory puts Minnesota/North Dakota ABC Members directly at your fingertips.
This directory is as complete and as accurate as possible. ABC MN/ND sincerely regrets any omissions or errors. We invite your comments and feedback.
ADVERTISER INDEX
Welcome to the 2023 ABC MN/ND Membership Directory
We are pleased to offer this ABC MN/ND Membership Directory as a tool for our contractors and trade partners to collaborate with one another. Our industry has a strong foundation built on relationships, and ABC offers many avenues to get to know our fellow association members. Promoting the Merit Shop way of doing business is the philosophy we strive for each day.
During 2022, many of our colleagues completed successful projects.
Each year ABC showcases those that have met a high standard of workmanship, quality, safety, innovation, uniqueness, and customer satisfaction through its Excellence in Construction Awards. These projects are featured in this directory and, in many instances, showcase several ABC members working together for a successful project. Please take a moment to enjoy the color section that showcases the 2022 Excellence in Construction winners and consider entering your company’s work in 2023 for these prestigious awards.
ABC offers many valuable resources to our members. Many companies utilize the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum to strengthen their craft professionals. ABC had over 500 attendees at webinars in 2022, covering various educational topics. Safety is at the forefront for ABC members, with 64 construction firms in our chapter earning recognition for their commitment to safety through ABC’s STEP Safety Management System. The partnership between MNOSHA and ABC actively promoted jobsite safety with 24 construction firms in 2022.
Above all, ABC is a leading voice promoting free enterprise within the construction industry. ABC political advocacy lives by the motto of “get into politics or get out of business.” I encourage everyone to download the ABC Action app for your phone and stay involved for your area. Be aware of what is impacting the industry, attend the Day at the Capitol so your voice can be heard, make contributions to PAC and FEA to help support State and Federal political candidates, and support issue advocacy campaigns across Minnesota and North Dakota.
I enjoy being a part of this industry, and it is my privilege to be the 2023 Chair for the MN/ND Chapter of ABC. I look forward to serving our members, and I encourage each of you to help grow and strengthen our chapter by submitting a prospect name to our membership director. We look forward to a busy and rewarding year for all!
Sincerely,
Jim Harmon, Stevens Construction Corp. 2023 ABC MN/ND Chairman

ABC Maximizes Your Membership Investment!
ABC invites you to explore the benefits you will receive from membership participation. Members have determined that beyond serving the industry, they receive six dollars in personal and business value for every one dollar they invest!
ABC has a proven track record in serving merit shop contractors since 1976 in MN/ND. With over 46 years of experience, ABC has established itself as the leading voice promoting free enterprise within the construction industry.
There are several benefits and services available for you as a member including networking opportunities, safety resources, training and educational workshops. We are focused on breaking down legislative and regulatory barriers that impede your ability to compete in the market place.
Active members derive real money benefits from their participation. ABC looks forward to partnering with you today as a member!
ABC Membership… What’s in it for your company?
Networking for Profitability
Networking keeps you competitive and profitable in the construction industry. Annually, over 1,300 people attend our structured networking events and social outings to expand their visibility and find new business opportunities. Our e-Directory is a great business development tool for contractors and construction users.
Membership Saves You Money
ABC members save on average $3,360 per year through ABC’s discount programs! Because ABC is the largest association of merit shop contractors in the country, we have buying power to create these exclusive discounts on business services and products you’re already purchasing—which means your membership may pay for itself.
Education & Training
ABC and its training partner, the Construction Education Foundation, have dedicated efforts to cultivate new training alliances to meet future demands. Here’s what you can expect:
• Our partners train over 1,700 people in a variety of construction crafts annually.
• ABC has the resources to train in more than 40 constructionrelated trades and manages state- and U.S.-approved apprenticeship programs which can help your company be more competitive on prevailing wage projects as well as provide a valuable retention tool for your skilled laborers.
• Leadership development courses for field professionals.
Working Safe & Smart
Your employees are your most valuable asset. Keep them safe through:
• ABC’s Safety Management System (STEP), a tool that helps members protect their employees and experience fewer losttime incidents.
• Our MNOSHA Partnership, which is unique in recognizing the safest construction companies in the industry and promoting a working relationship with MNOSHA.
• Partnership with safety services firm that will provide you with the latest in safety practices at a significantly discounted rate.
Real-Dollar Benefits of Membership
ABC members receive real-dollar value from their membership and a big return on investment for the membership dues they invest each year by belonging to ABC. You might benefit more or less from each item listed, but no matter what, your membership dollars will be maximized!
Helping You Win Work
Regulations and legal requirements can cost you thousands of dollars and burdensome laws can hamper your company’s ability to compete, or even drive you out of business.
That’s why ABC and its lobbyists in Washington, D.C., and the state capitol are working to keep these laws in check. With the vast majority of craft professionals working for merit shop companies, we have a mandate to lead. We are taking action to ensure members will have the ability to compete and win work fairly on projects.
We keep you up-to-date on what’s happening so you can concentrate on running your business. And when you need us, we are there with advice on agency policies and procedures advocating for you!

Company: Fagen, Inc.
Award: EAGLE
Project: Seaboard Energy
Seaboard selected Fagen, Inc. to serve as the EPC contractor for its 6,500 barrels-per-day renewable diesel refinery in Hugoton, KS. The completed facility, also named Seaboard Energy, utilizes beef tallow and distilled corn oil as feedstock to convert into renewable diesel and renewable naphtha. Seaboard Energy will produce 85 million gallons of renewable diesel and 8.5 million gallons of renewable naphtha annually. The physical site spanned more than 40 acres. As the EPC on the project, Fagen produced a turnkey commissioned facility.
Seaboard Energy purchased an idle cellulosic ethanol plant in Hugoton, KS. Seaboard Energy desired to utilize as much of the existing plant as was feasible. From the onset, this project required meticulous strategic planning between Fagen, the client, the engineers and several key vendors and subcontractors. Some key areas that were utilized/retrofitted included the following: existing administration building, pipe racks, waste water treatment, water treatment, fire protection system, various on-site electrical rooms, medium voltage switchgear and medium voltage transformers. A key goal of this project was to utilize modularized construction to reduce construction cost and have greater control over construction schedule. There were 67 total modules throughout this facility.
Another unique aspect of this project was the complexity of the engineering coordination. Eight different engineering firms performed various engineering scopes on this facility. All these scopes required coordination to ensure the facility would fully function as intended and meet the contract requirements.
Fagen crews self-performed 85% of the work, including concrete, steel erection, pre-engineered building erection, equipment setting, process piping, electrical, instrumentation and insulation. Fagen crews mobilized in April of 2020 and substantial completion was achieved on in June of 2022. During that time, our crews clocked over 800,000 manhours.

Project: Independence Wind Energy
Fagen, Inc. was contracted to provide balance of plant engineering, procurement and construction (civil and mechanical only) of the Independence Wind Farm near Ryan, IA. The wind farm consists of (18) GE 2.82-127, 89 m hub height and (2) GE 2.3-116, 81 m hub height turbines and has a generating capacity of approximately 54 MW. The project was built for client BHE Renewables. The primary engineer was Fagen Engineering, LLC. Fagen crews mobilized to the site on May of 2021 and mechanical completion was achieved on November 5, 2021. During that time, Fagen crews clocked 52,258 manhours with 0 lost time accidents. Fagen’s original scope of work for this project was modified early on from the original 19 GE 2.82-127, 89 m hub height. These changes included removing one of the GE 2.82-127, 89 m hub height and replacing it with a GE 2.3-116, 81 m hub height. A second GE 2.3 was also added at the only alternate turbine location on the site. Construction activities on this project operated at a near seamless efficiency. This is attributed to the focused attention to detail and exemplary communication demonstrated by Fagen’s civil and tower erection crews, as well as all of our subcontractors.
One unique challenge was the lack of required staging area. All components were delivered directly to pad sites. Fagen crews rose to the challenge and efficiently worked to offload every truck as they came in. Erection crews completed more than half the site with zero punchlist items and the majority of the rest only having one or two items.
Fagen turned over another a high-quality product to a great client. The Independence Wind Farm is now delivering wind energy to Central Iowa Power Cooperative in support of their renewable energy goals.

Project: Bob Glanzer Generating Station
Northwestern Energy selected Fagen, Inc. to build the Bob Glanzer Huron Generating Station, a nominal 60 MW reciprocating internal combustion engine (RICE) project located in Huron, SD. The project consists of six, 10 MW natural gas fired Caterpillar engines, with the capability of being dispatched multiple times per day, seven days a week. The facility is being used in a number of applications including providing capacity for peak-usage times, economic dispatch in realtime markets, intra-hour balancing, bulk electric system regulation and contingency reserves. The site is also being operated as a regulating and peaking power facility with varying run time per start. The site is connected to a 69 KV grid at Northwestern Energy’s existing site substation.
This project offered some unique challenges to navigate. The new power plant was located on a property with an existing generating station located in Huron, SD. In addition to building the new generating station alongside the existing facility and substation, there was a previously demolished generating station that the new engine hall was to be located on.
The existing Huron Generating Station provides regulation capability and peaking power needs to the electrical grid at 69 kV. The project scope of work included tie-ins to the existing generating station, the substation, site utilities and, in a few instances, upgrades to the existing facilities. The new generating station was located directly next to the existing operating facility, so care was taken from the design phase through construction and commissioning to ensure that Fagen and its subcontractors did not impact the existing operating facility. We are especially proud of this highly technical generating station because we know the importance of the energy sector and the need for a robust and diverse energy grid to maintain the health and safety of communities across the United States.

Project: Poultry Feed Mill Facility
Tyson Foods, Inc., contracted with The Weitz Company to design-build a new poultry feed processing facility. The state-of-the-art feed mill located in Fulton, AR, has a manufacturing capacity of 18,000 tons per week of poultry feed. Process systems included: grain storage, grinding, mixing, pelleting, cooling, and bulk load out. The feed mill structure is 190’-8” tall and the grain storage structure is 167’-6” tall. The project was valued at $43,234,315.00 and the length of the project was 19.5 months.
The construction safety component, complexity and innovation of the design, the quality of work, as well as the short construction schedule to complete the project, is what made this project an ABC Excellence in Construction Award winner.
The Weitz Company (Weitz) realized during the pre-bid stage that a standard approach to managing this Tyson project was not going to be sufficient to meet the high expectations set forth by the Tyson/Weitz team. A resourceful approach was going to be necessary to keep the project safe while keeping the project on schedule and on budget and performing the high quality of work that Tyson has become accustomed to with Weitz on past projects.
• Weitz self-performed slipform concrete, flatwork concrete, steel erection, millwright installation, equipment installation, and finish painting. Approximately 65% of construction labor was self-performed. Approximately 85% of conceptual engineering, detailed engineering and concrete/structural design was self-performed.
• Additional Weitz activities included:
o Comprehensive site safety plan development and implementation
o Development of permit documents and assistance with permit submittals/reviews
o Craft-hour loaded construction schedule and procurement schedule development and execution

Project: Associated Wholesale Grocers
Associated Wholesale Grocers (AWG) approached Rice Companies for this project from knowledge of their longstanding partnership with Coborn’s. For quite some time, there has been a need for a distribution center in the Central Minnesota community. Coborn’s decision to move forward in a partnership with AWG, a nationwide co-op food distributer, set this plan into motion. This new location, with close interstate access, means a magnitude of cost saved in hours/ miles (estimated $400k/mo.) for each grocery store they will be providing goods to. Early figures showed, the perishable facility would create around 300 new jobs for the area.
The AWG’s perishable facility is 331,570 square feet of climatecontrolled warehouse space. There are several upgrades to this location to make the facility as efficient as possible. This building has been constructed as phase 1 of 3 to accommodate projected growth, with plans of facility automation and future additions in the works to begin within the next two years. There are six different climate zones and climate-controlled room types throughout the facility, created by using industry leading thermo-break designs. Rice Companies utilized different insulations, vapor barriers, roofing, and wall paneling materials. The freezer rooms are equipped with hydronic radiant underfloor heat to keep the permafrost from driving deep enough to heave and buckle the building. Throughout the building, temperature sensors on the walls and under the slabs in the sub-grades are utilized. This is to maintain and monitor main temperatures so surrounding rooms are protected from freezing conditions. Thermo-break applications were placed under the steel columns to footings, pipe penetrations, steel beams and girders. Small conduits were used to keep temperature transfer, condensation, and frost from occurring. The site is secured using the latest cameras, door contractors, access control system, razor wire fence, fully functioning guard shack with access gate arms, and employee turnstile entrance to exceed FDA requirements for food storage.

Project: West Bank
The West Bank of Sartell building is a stunning structure with its stone, curtain wall & barrel roof. The eyecatching custom design would be challenging under any circumstances, but those challenges were complicated by the supply-chain issues that have plagued the building industry in recent years. It took Lyon Contracting’s leadership, know-how and exhaustive coordination with designers, subcontractors, and vendors to bring this contemporary upscale building to life.
While West Bank’s building footprint is one of Lyon’s smallest projects in recent years; the details of ensuring safety, tying together various roof elevations, and interfacing custom finishes inside and out, were a tall order. West Bank, located on the corner of Hwy 15 and County Rd 1 in Sartell, MN is a new, three (3) level, 15,510 Square foot, standalone bank building. The building’s interior is highly detailed with Class A finishes throughout.
Timing material orders to perform the work would prove to be among the trickiest parts of construction. The pandemic had turned what used to be a simple part of the planning process into one of the most challenging, with material not being available or just simply being on allocation.
The building now stands as the crown jewel of West Bank’s numerous buildings; it is the model future buildings will be based on. Lyon Contracting is proud of this structure that showcases technical know-how, interpersonal coordination, and the beauty of meticulous design and craftmanship.

Project: All Saints Catholic Church
All Saints Catholic Church contracted Hy-Tec Construction to build their new sanctuary and worship hall. The church, located in Brainerd, Minnesota had outgrown its small, simple building and was looking to expand. To foster the continued growth of the catholic community, All Saints Catholic Church established a plan for expansion on a wooded 60-acre parcel of land. Hy-Tec Construction collaborated closely with the church committee and the architect to aid in the facilitation of design, value engineering, project management, and construction. The building features 34-foot tall glulam arches and clerestory windows as the backdrop to the ornately adorned sanctuary. One of the unique design features in the sanctuary required special attention to detail, the ninety-year-old stained-glass windows. Reclaimed from another church building, the 12-foot tall windows required re-soldering and careful placement.
Through careful planning and project management, Hy-Tec Construction was able to overcome various construction obstacles and supply chain delays. Our team worked closely with the church building committee to make sure the new space was completed on time and within budget. The newly renovated All Saints Catholic Church now has a space to worship that reflects its vibrant and growing congregation. The reclaimed pieces that were incorporated have been given new life and reflect the tradition and values of this tranquil church in the woods.

Project: Fargo Public Schools – Explorer Academy
Construction Engineers (CE) was selected as the Construction Manager as Agent (CMA) for the Fargo Public Schools Explorer Academy project in February 2020, by the Fargo Public School District. Upon selection CE began working with the Owner, YHR Partners, BWBR Architects and the rest of the design team on the early stages of the design process to assure the design parameters remained within the approved budget of $12 million.
The Explorer Academy is North Dakota’s first K-8 grade special education public school with integrated, project-based STEAM and gross motor program opportunities. It’s an entire environment dedicated to the success of students and works to meet them at their level of need, rather than having them fit into traditional settings.
A portion of the Lewis & Clark’s Explorer Academy is leased to TNT Fitness for a sensory gym. This is the first public and private partnership between Fargo Public Schools and T-N-T gymnastics.
The construction phase of the project consisted of a compressed timeline with the goal of having the facility open to students by the start of the 2021-2022 school year, which allowed just under 16 months to complete a complex 45,000 square foot addition to an active elementary school. Design considerations for the Fargo Public Schools Explorer Academy included: secured learning pod environments, sensory rooms, small group rooms, state-of-the-art sensory gym, soft paint palettes, curved walls, and a SmartLab.
Throughout the process of weathering the COVID-19 pandemic, CE remained committed to completing the new school for the Fall semester. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Project Team consisting of the Fargo Public School District, the Design Team, and all the contractors that worked relentlessly on the project throughout the pandemic, we were able to attain the fully approved Certificate of Occupancy on September 10, 2021.

Project: Central Minnesota Pediatric Dentists
The DESIGN/BUILD project for Central Minnesota Pediatric Dentists (CMPD) and Ledge Wealth was presented to Rice Companies with a challenging design concept. Combining a healthcare facility geared towards a younger clientele, and a financial institution who needed to keep a strong professional brand, was in the hands of Rice Companies’ in-house architectural design team.
CMPD wanted to keep the exterior light-hearted and fun to help the children feel comfortable while having dental procedures done. While Ledge Wealth wanted a more professional aesthetic to their portion of the building that would give their clients a feeling of stability and trust with their financial well-being and future. To achieve this, transition elements were used and a play on materials in the design of the front and rear facades from bright colored metal panels and unique shapes for CMPD, to wood and stone, a more conservative style for Ledge Wealth - all while still tying both sides together with the use of roof overhangs and sunshades.
The unique design requirements for two very different tenants, supply chain restrictions and challenges due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Minnesota’s winter weather restrictions, and the challenging timeline to have the building operational by the time the dentistry clinic needed to vacate their existing location, were all potential areas to fail. However, given Rice Companies in-house capabilities and single-source services, the project came together successfully and right on time.

Project: Jackson County Courthouse
Built in 1908, to serve the needs of Jackson County, MN, the Courthouse was one of the first buildings on the National Register of Historic Places –thanks to its combination of Neo-classical and Renaissance Revival architecture. On several occasions in its 114-year history, the copper clad dome had experienced several high impact storm events and sustained significant damage. When the building occupants observed water leaking on the interior of the dome structure the County decided to pursue a full restoration of the copper dome.
The copper dome cladding restoration included removing the original copper cladding that had fallen into disrepair. From there our sheet metal team worked tirelessly to replicate the original standing seam and batten cover details while making some much needed improvements to the gutter system and other flashing details along the way. The eight copper rosettes around the base of the dome were replicated to match the original in every way. The Lady Justice statue was in dire need of repair and refinishing. That work was done at our shop while the newly fabricated dome cladding components were being installed on site. The statue was refinished with a coating system that matched the original gold gilding color perfectly. Lady Justice was reinstalled in her original location and orientation at the top of the dome. The project introduced a heavier gauge copper cladding, repaired wood substrate, replica architectural copper components, flashing improvements and a refreshed statue to bring the project together and provided Jackson County, MN with a revitalized copper dome on top of their most prominent building.
The ornamental component of the dome that required the most effort to reproduce were the eight ornamental rosettes that decorate the outside corner junctions adjacent to the gutter assembly. These beautiful rosettes had endured many repair attempts over their long history. When we found them, the historically insensitive repairs and high level of deterioration warranted full replacement of these essential architectural components. To achieve this and keep the project on schedule, we teamed up with an industry partner to replicate the stamped copper details. Our in-house metal fabricators reproduced the body and base of each rosette and married the stamped and fabricated components together to create a wonderful reproduction of the original rosettes.
The restoration of this copper dome was a great challenge for BRC’s skilled sheet metal team. Everything from the innovative scaffolding assembly to replicating and producing period correct ornamental copper components afforded a tremendous effort from our entire project team.

Project: St. Joseph The Workman
Building Restoration Corporation and Insite Consulting teamed up to repair the deteriorating, cracking, and spalling Limestone at St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral in Lacrosse, WI. BRC performed the restoration of 38,000 square feet of Limestone on the building façade along with the 65-foot-tall spire on top of the steeple.
The most immediate concern was that the spire had experienced years of high-impact storms that caused severe deterioration of the Limestone. The Cathedral parishioners observed large spalls of Limestone on the ground around the bell tower, and holes in the standing seam copper roof that shelters the Sanctuary. With the scope of work acknowledged, BRC hired Scaffold Services to erect a massive scaffold system for our crew to safely access the work area, utilizing a 100-ton crane to pick and land the stone. Because the spire was tiered, the scaffold had to be designed so that the upper portions could be accessed without obstruction.
After working through the access challenges, the next process was systematically removing, photographing, laser scanning, and marking the Limestone for replacement or resetting. Every piece of Limestone was removed from the spire and its base. Each stone, whether it was to be replaced or reset, was swung to the ground, sound tested, and inspected for integrity. If salvageable, the mortar was removed, and the Limestone was cleaned, patched, and stored for reinstallation. The questionable stone was measured, drafted, and ordered for production from Galloy & Van Etten, a stone fabricator in Chicago.
Another unique item was the assembly and installation of the Italian hand-carved crucifix to hang over the altar. This work involved an interior scaffold design that would provide safety for the crew while moving and installing the crucifix. The crucifix hung seven feet above the marble altar using custom solid brass brackets and rods fabricated by BRC’s metal shop.

Project: Bethesda Senior Living –North Pointe
When the Baby Boomer population was younger they enjoyed the excitement of single- family home ownership. As they begin to age, the upkeep of a single-family home begins to become more of a challenge with aching joints, mobility issues, and unfortunately, for some, memory loss. Bethesda recognizes the needs for the aging Baby Boomer population are not the same. Some still want to enjoy the independence of living on their own, just without the constant pressures of keeping up a single-family home; others may need a little more help with everyday living; while others are facing greater challenges with the loss of their memory or dementia. To help facilitate the different needs of those who live in a more rural community, Bethesda determined they could help and continue their mission of providing affordable alternatives to a traditional nursing home setting.
Willmar Electric partnered with the General Contractor, Marcus Construction to complete the electrical installation for Bethesda-North Pointe (Senior Living). The new senior living facility is situated in beautiful New London, MN, opening the opportunity for seniors who want to continue to live in their more rural community.
Willmar Electric embraced the opportunity to find ways to find value engineering ways to save the owner dollars to fund the future expansion of the facility, adjust a program of work to remain productive during inefficient times, focus on delivering the highest quality project, along with not compromising the safety of co-workers or other tradesmen. In August 2021, Bethesda North Pointe opened the doors to their new Independent/Assisted Living/Memory Care facility to welcome individuals who greatly appreciated their opportunity to continue living a full life, just with a little more care and a little less home upkeep. Willmar Electric was honored to help Bethesda continue to provide affordable alternative housing different than the traditional nursing home setting.

Housing the Art and Music Departments, the 60,000 square foot, twostory building includes among other things: 350-seat performance hall, 100-seat recital hall/choral room, recording and production studio, a band room, art gallery, ceramics lab, a digital photography studio, woodshop, grand lobby for receptions.
The project was bid as a design-assist with a guaranteed maximum price. Bergstrom Electric bid on the project with 50% of the design and construction documents complete. Unfortunately, Bergstrom did not know about the extensive acoustical requirements prior to submitting their bid. These required sound-deadening devices added a great deal of cost and installation time to the project.
The project utilized BIM modeling for some areas, including cable trays, larger pipe racks and conduits, and underground piping. Between 380 and 400 workers were involved in the design and construction of the entire facility. Because this was a design-assist job, close interaction was required between the architects, owner, general contractor and the trades.
The daunting sound deadening goals of the building required innovative
construction techniques. Every room in the building had acoustical wall panels that had to be affixed to a bottom track that included a piece of felt to absorb all vibrations.
Anything that could produce any kind of vibration had to be on an isolator of some kind. Flexible piping was used throughout, interspersed with hard conduit. Electrical panels had to be hung with these flexes. One electrical panel in particular had 22 flexes on it to prevent any sound transfer.
Bergstrom was not allowed to drill through the pre -cast walls so 90% of the piping was underground. No other project that Bergstrom has constructed in its almost 60-year history has required as much acoustical and sound deadening devices and systems.
Six crew members worked 52-hour weeks during peak construction. The job required a total of 13,538 hours of work, 26 miles of wire, 17 miles of communication and audio cable, 12 miles of conduit, a 2000-amp main switchboard, seven transformers, 25 electrical panels, 851 light fixtures an in addition to installing cable tray, lighting control system, theatrical lighting control system, fire alarm system, access control system and a full security system.
The project was completed in January of 2022.

Project: Conserv FS
Conserv FS, a leading supplier of agronomy, energy, and fertilizer services completed a major expansion project at its Waterman Facility in Illinois. This expansion project included a new 7,500-ton dry fertilizer building equipped with a 24-ton blender and autobatch blending system. The new facility would allow the capacity to load and fill eight (8) semi-trucks per hour. Also included in the project was the 1.3 million gallons of liquid fertilizer storage integrated with a crop protection mixing facility and warehouse. This state-of-the-art new liquid facility was equipped with three large bays providing both top and bottom loading options. Electrical Production Services had the experience and a strong reputation within the Ag industry to serve as an ideal contractor for this unique project. Conserv FS selected Greystone Construction as the general contractor to manage the construction project and in turn Greystone Construction selected EPS to complete the electrical, low-voltage, and fiber installation for the project.
Once EPS was notified by Greystone Construction that they had been selected to perform the work, EPS Project Manager, Adam Peterson, assembled a team of skilled electricians and technicians who were willing to travel each week to Illinois from Minnesota and take on a challenging schedule while exceeding the customer’s expectations. The EPS Team was led by Lead Journeyman Troy Garbes, who led the cohesive team consisting of Journeyman James Dressen, and Electrical Apprentices Mitch Schullo and Nate Claeys. In order to stay ahead of the work schedule and the other trades assigned to the project, the EPS Team worked 112 hours each week including weekends to ensure the project was completed on time and within budget. EPS completed 4,265 man-hours on the project that started in January of 2021 and completed on November 5th, 2021, with all systems and facilities operational by harvest time.

Project: Dairy Farmers of America
Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) required a major upgrade of its manufacturing facility in Zumbrota, MN to meet the increasing demand for its products, contributing to feeding America, and to be at code with wastewater regulations. As the project’s electrical contractor, Knobelsdorff (KE) provided electrical design, project management services and provided installation of electrical components.
In 2016, DFA processed about 8 million pounds of milk a week and contributed more than $100 million annually to the local economy. The facility is now producing an estimated additional 7.5 million pounds of product.
The KE Way: We take care of our people, who take care of our customers, who then take care of us.
The KE Way is how we run business, it’s what makes us who we are. The KE Way starts with our people – customers, employees and their families – who we always put first.
The KE Way is defined through our project lifecycle and executed through seven stages:
1. Generate Opportunities
2. Estimate
3. Preconstruction
4. Production
5. Controls & Accountability
6. Project Closeout
7. Lessons Learned
As a long-standing partner to DFA, they requested the general contractor to receive a bid from KE to serve as the electrical contractor to the project, which included 86,000 square feet expansion, a new load bay, cheese tempering, wastewater treatment facility, office and spray dyer with packaging area. We continue to build on our 20-year relationship with DFA, as they rely on KE to design, install and maintain their Zumbrota facility, making it more productive. On call 24/7, KE continues to maintain electrical and automation documentation and records.

Project: The Overlook At Crystal Lake
The Overlook at Crystal Lake is a 110-unit multi-family apartment with a finished area of 181,559 GSF and rests on just over 6 acres of land in a quiet urban area surrounded by scenic views of water and rolling hills. This scenic location came with some obstacles, the apartment building site was extremely tight and close to the bluff on the backside of the building. There was a 20’ bluff impact zone under 10’ from a section of the building. Logistically we had to get our siding and balconies installed prior to installing any sidewalks or patio retaining wall, because of how tight this space was. Per the plans we had to account for several trees being persevered on site and remove specific trees to allow space for the future building. Lyon Contracting had to make many concessions to preserve the natural bluff and valleys along the south of the building to protect nature and ensure the critical habitats were left undisturbed. The City Forrester completed an inspection prior to any tree removal and had to approve all tree protection on site before mass grading. The tree preservation plan identified the species, diameter, and details of the trees being preserved, which was extremely helpful to distinguish which trees were being removed or residing. We worked tirelessly with our subcontractors to install redundant erosion and protective barriers to accomplish these goals. Approximately twenty-three (23) trees required fence protection, one hundred sixty (160) were required to be preserved, and one hundred thirty-six (136) trees were removed. Working with the city and city subcontractors to complete the Crystal Lake Regional Trail expansion while coordinating and maintaining the construction schedule proved to be more challenging than anticipated. Due to material delays, supply chain bottlenecks, and labor shortages scheduling became a guessing game. Nevertheless, we worked closely with all clients to maintain limited access to the site while shutting down Maple Island Road to allow for installation of large retaining walls, trail expansion, and a new city force main through constant lines of communication with each client. This unique location offers the residents the feel of secluded living in a metropolitan area with the convenience of easy access to nearby parks, trails, restaurants, and stores.

Project: Novo
Apartments
Novo Apartments is a 193-unit market-rate apartment complex with a unique split 3-story/5-story design with an underground two-level parking garage. The 2.3-acre lot required colossal amounts of communication and compromises to be reached with hundreds of interested parties collaborating under Lyon Contracting’s leadership to bring the project together.
The original project sequence called for completing each building level before moving to the next floor. This plan would be scrapped just prior to the start of construction. That’s when the Development team discovered it needed additional time to complete the closing on a sliver of land less than a quarteracre at the corner of the property.
Sometimes, what appears to be a problem can turn out to be a blessing. While there was talk of shifting the foundation of the five-story building outside of the parcel, work commenced on the three-story portion of the building. Crews went about installing footings, CMU exterior walls and precast planks were set and grouted. As framing began, ownership completed the land purchase of the sliver in question. Concrete crews remobilized to begin the five-story portion of the build, while framing continued the three-story portion. This required plenty of coordination on site with our subcontractors so that all trades could work efficiently, not impede the others, and maintain a safe working site. Looking back, staggering the building sequence shortened the building schedule and helped to make up for time that was lost elsewhere. The three-story portion was completed while drywall and finishes were well on their way on the five-story section.
There are points throughout some projects, where circumstances that are beyond control seem to be coming together to undermine all the planning, hard work and money that have been invested in the idea. That was the case with NOVO Apartments, plagued with initial opposition, a worldwide health crisis and logistical issues in a tight work site. Lyon Contracting kept its eye on the original vision however, turning and pivoting, when necessary, to deliver a community that is welcoming, stunning and a compliment to the community.

Project: MSP T1 Baggage Claim and Ticket Lobby
The total cost of the five-year MSP T1 2019 Baggage Claim and Ticket Lobby renovation was $200 million and when completed, would entirely transform Minneapolis – St. Paul International Airport Terminal 1-Lindbergh’s 54-year-old ticket lobby and baggage claim levels at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP).
In Phase 1, Grazzini Brothers installed over 48,500 square feet of epoxy terrazzo flooring – 16 colors in shades of tans, blues, and greens, and 2,500 square feet of limestone, porcelain, quarry, and glass tile in the Baggage Claim level & Ticket Lobby, as well as the Mezzanine and some back-of-house areas.
Our skilled terrazzo craftsmen installed the epoxy terrazzo flooring in a pattern that was broken into 2’ by 4’ rectangles and triangles, requiring almost 7 miles of divider strip. The overall design is that of a river flowing through the building.
In addition, tile crews installed 2,500 square feet of limestone, porcelain, quarry, and glass tile in 12”x12” limestone tile with 24”x24” porcelain tile above. In several locations, porcelain tile was placed at new walls to match the existing tile patterns, including custom-cutting the tile to match discontinued product sizes.
The focal point of the renovation is the new artwork at the center of check-in hall. The terrazzo and tile were designed to draw passengers’ attention to the two-story hanging light sculpture. At the floor of the baggage claim level below the art, the terrazzo was installed around light fixtures in the floor. Matte white glass tile is at the curved walls and soffit near the opening between the levels.
In MSP’s 80-year history, Grazzini Brothers has participated in several projects at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) – Terminal 1 & 2. Grazzini Brothers has the expertise to get projects done on time while working within the confides of Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) rules and regulations.
