{ WHAT’S NEW Primrose Park and Juniper Two holiday pop-up shops, Primrose Park, a contemporary and chic women’s boutique for the ‘woman about town,’ and Juniper, the edgy and sweet boutique for the ‘girl who’s young at heart,’ opened at The Shops at West End in October.

Kittsona Kittsona is the newest boutique to open at The Shops at West End. The store carries women’s clothing, accessories, and speciality gifts. It is the perfect blend of a high-end atmosphere, unique products, and affordable prices. Kittsona is recognized for its signature mix of rustic wood, crystal chandeliers, and beautiful gold accents. They are known for their superb customer service, and love to treat every guest like a queen.

“We are really excited to be partnering with The Shops at West End,” said Liz Berko, owner of Juniper. “We are joining some great local and national retailers and think this is a great complement for both of our brands.” “Shopping local and supporting small businesses has become so important over the past several years,” said Jennifer Carnahan owner of Primrose Park. “Having the opportunity to support a fellow business owner and friend through this joint effort makes this that much more exciting.”

Caroline’s Cart available at Cub

Lollacup as seen on ‘Shark Tank’

Caroline’s Cart is a shopping cart created for special needs children that provides parents and caregivers a viable option to transport a child through a store while grocery shopping. The cart alleviates the impossible task of having to maneuver both a wheelchair and a grocery cart. Named after Caroline, the special needs daughter of Drew Ann and David Long, the cart was developed after Drew Ann realized her daughter would outgrow a typical shopping cart. Caroline’s Cart is available for use at Cub.

When Hanna and Mark Lim’s daughter was 9 months old, they held a straw to her lips and were ecstatic to see her drinking effortlessly from it! Excited by this discovery and their pediatrician’s recommendation to wean their daughter to a straw cup rather than a traditional sippy cup, and with very few alternatives, the idea for Lollacup was born. The cup is easy to use, easy to clean, safe (free of BPA/BPS, PVC, phthalate), made in the USA, and just plain attractive. After appearing on the show ‘Shark Tank’ and partnering with Mark Cuban and Robert Herjavec, the company has grown tremendously, creating innovative, functional and modern infant/toddler goods. A true Super Fan, Chris Lynd loved the West End area so much he moved to the Flats at West End apartments. Shortly thereafter, his future wife Kelly moved there as well.

The Lynds also love to shop. “We like many of the stores, but my wife’s favorite is Evereve, the kids love Creative Kidstuff, and my favorite is lululemon,” replied Chris.

Living close to the West End was great, but when the Lynds got married in January, they merged their lives into a (part-time) family of seven, which means they had to move for more space. “We were sad to leave the West End area, but thankfully we’re only a $7 Uber ride away,” joked Kelly.

And of course, dinner and a movie is a regular affair. They frequent Raku, Rojo, CRAVE, Bonefish Grill and The Loop, and love the VIP section of ShowPlace ICON Theatre when they have date night out.

The Lynds go to The Shops at West End for many different reasons. They take classes at Haute Barre. “We like the ‘Haute Shake It’ noon classes. They’re awesome, quick workouts with high energy and amazing instructors,” said Kelly.

“We have made so many friends at The Shops at West End…from the bartenders, servers, customers and other Flats residents – to our hairdressers at phresh spa salon – and of course the awesome instructors who whip our butts into shape at Haute Barre!” added Kelly.

You can’t always recognize a superhero in plain clothing, nor can you always recognize a West End Super Fan either. We went undercover to unmask some of the shopping center’s biggest enthusiasts.

Newlyweds Andrea and Adam Shea quickly fell in love with The Shops at West End after moving to St. Louis Park three and a half years ago. Adam’s sister, Samantha, introduced them to the shopping center, and the rest is history – they were hooked!

For the Sheas, who are originally from a small town in Wisconsin, the West End reminds them of home. “I like the atmosphere – it’s big enough to have plenty of shops, but not too big, which is nice, said Andrea. “Everyone is so friendly when you walk into a store. They really do want to just help you or let you do your thing, which is nice not to have anyone pushy trying to just get the sale.” Andrea finds herself stopping at the West End two or three times per month. “I’m there some months more than others,” she laughed. “But it comes out to about that if you average it out.” When asked about her favorite purchase, she couldn’t narrow it down to one. “I normally go there for clothes, so that’s always my favorite purchase!” she stated.

This past summer, the Sheas attended their first major event at the West End, the Minnesota Summer Wine Festival and Market. They spent the entire day on site, enjoying wine, shopping for Adam’s wedding band at Wedding Day Jewelers, and having lunch at Rojo. The also entered the drawing and won a gift basket from Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa. “We hope to attend more events in the future now that our wedding is done,” said Adam. “We will definitely be back for the Wine Festival next year.”

Amy Swedberg of Minnetonka has been going to The Shops at West End since it opened six years ago. “I love this place,” she exclaimed. One of her favorite spots is Brush Studio. “The owners, Jean and Jodi, have always been friendly and extremely accommodating. I also love the idea of wine and painting and the opportunity to be creative,” said Amy. “Although the group paints the same general theme, no one is discouraged from being creative, such as adding other elements to the painting or using other color paints than those on the palette.” Since May, 2015, Amy has done four paintings at Brush Studio, two that she organized with groups of girlfriends, one that she organized for a private networking event with women attorneys, bankers and other business professionals, and one with her sister and niece visiting from Arizona.

Amy loves to plan outings at the West End. “Two of my girlfriends and I are planning a six person Brush event where we each bring our significant others,” she said. “At the last event I attended, my girlfriend had remarked how her husband would really like this, and I think my husband will enjoy it too.” Amy says she’s at The Shops at West End at least three to five times per month. She loves seeing movies at ShowPlace ICON Theatre. “Although it is not the closest theater to my home, I see about half of all movies there. I love the ability to reserve seats in advance, especially for new releases.”

Nutrishop owner Cody Haislet and Andrew Klein

Andrew Klein lives in St. Louis Park near The Shops at West End because he loves the location. “It fits my lifestyle well,” he explains. “I moved here in fall 2013. Soon after moving I decided to do some exploring to see what the location had to offer. I was looking for a place to eat and discovered that I had a handful of really good restaurants close to my house. After finding out about the heated parking garage, I was hooked and knew that this area was right for me.” Shortly after moving to St. Louis Park, Andrew decided to start living a more healthy lifestyle. “Prior to moving to this area, I had never had a protein shake. I was eating relatively healthy, running a lot, and weight training, but did not see the results that I desired. I was at a point in my life where I wanted to transform my body into something greater. I thought my exercising alone was enough, but I was wrong.” As fate would have it, he discovered Nutrishop. “I had passed Nutrishop many times in the past while visiting the West End, but one day I decided to give it a try. I walked through the front door and was immediately greeted by the shop’s owner, Cody Haislet. I had never met this guy, but felt like he was an old friend. He listened to my goals and recommended products to get me on track. Cody also gave me some pointers on dieting and exercise routines that have helped him.”

his fitness goals tremendously. Since using the products he has dropped his body fat percentage and increased lean muscle mass. “The supplements have changed my entire lifestyle into something I am very happy with. After initially using Nutrishop products, I got a gym membership. For the past year and half, I have been going to the gym regularly and continue to reach new goals,” he says. For healthy eating, Andrew also likes the restaurants at The Shops at West End. “There are a lot of healthy options for me and the atmosphere is great. I like the variety of the restaurants. There is honestly a dish for everyone. I am a huge seafood fan, so I naturally gravitate toward Bonefish Grill. For nightlife, I enjoy going to The Loop. The bartenders and staff are awesome and I always have a good time there,” Andrew explained. Andrew also likes to see new action movies at ShowPlace ICON Theatre whenever he has free time.

Kat’s Out of the Bag Local musician Kat Perkins finds her Voice. By Sarah Howard

“What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” These simple words not only start Kat Perkins’s first single “Fearless,” but they have also set the tone for the past few years of her life, including her top-5 spot on NBC’s “The Voice” and producing her own album, “Drive.” Opening Act Born in rural North Dakota with a high school graduating class of 15, Perkins knew she “needed more,” to pursue her dreams of music and theater. But the decision to move to the Twin Cities in early 2000 did not come easy. “I was terrified of being away from my family. I’m not sure I’d be brave enough today to do that!” But the move paid off in spades.

Haze, which went on to get a record deal, tour, and open for bands such as Bon Jovi. “We were successful and I loved it,” she says. But by 2009, she was burnt out.

Within months, she was cast in Hey City Theater’s popular “Tony ’n Tina’s Wedding,” followed by a starring role in the company’s “Beehive.” “I had this moment of, ‘Yes! I’ve made it!’” she recalls.

While continuing music at night, Perkins took on a full-time nannying job for an Edina family with five kids. “Having kids in my life is so important,” says Perkins, who comes from a family of teachers. Between helping with homework and keeping the kids busy, she often watched “The Voice” with the family, sometimes even staying late to do so. “It brought us all together,” she says of the show. “We were huge fans.”

Eventually, she started writing and performing her own music and started the band Scarlet

“Without those kids in my life, I would never have been on ‘The Voice.’”

On the show, Perkins was in “sponge mode,” taking every opportunity to learn from those around her, including her fellow contestants who she still keeps in touch with. “I had this amazing opportunity and I wanted to take full advantage of it.” TV Comes Knocking While nannying, Perkins started touring and performing for troops in the Middle East. It was on her first tour that she found herself in the Amsterdam airport at 6 a.m. on a layover. Perkins’ pianist started playing Adele’s “Someone Like You.” Initially Perkins hesitated, but after being dared, she started to sing. A crowd gathered, smartphones captured Perkins singing, and the performance was put on YouTube. This was enough to capture the attention of “Voice” producers, who often scan YouTube and love performers from the Midwest. “I got a message through YouTube and thought it was a joke,” Perkins says. But the producers told Perkins they wanted her to audition for “The Voice” in Los Angeles. Again, she hesitated. “I was scared. I was living paycheck to paycheck and didn’t know what to do,” she says. But her mind was changed when the five-year-old she nannied simply asked, “Kat, why wouldn’t you?” “I love that mentality,” she says. “And I used to have it. That idea of just do it, don’t look back.” So she was off to LA. The first round was a camera test where Perkins performed four songs. The second round came about a month later when she met with about 30 producers for a mock trial of how the show works. They gave her songs,

she had five days to learn them and work with a voice coach. “They were definitely testing if you could handle the pressure,” Perkins says. This weeklong bootcamp also came with strict rules, including curfew and no drinking. “If you broke the rules, you were out.” Two weeks later, Perkins got the call that she made it to the final round, which is what viewers see at home. For those unfamiliar with the show, celebrity musicians have their backs turned to contestants for a “blind” audition. If the judges like the performance, they turn their chair. If nobody turns, the contestant goes home. If more than one turns, the contestant picks which coach he or she wants to work with. Leading up to the blind audition, Perkins spent five weeks working with producers, filming her back story, and preparing for her audition. She finally hit the stage in late 2013 to sing Fleetwood Mac’s “Gold Dust Woman.” Three judges turned their chairs — Shakira, Usher, and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine. “I felt like I was watching it happen to someone else,” Perkins says of the moment. “You have to control your heart rate and somehow keep singing.” For Perkins, the decision was easy. She picked Levine. “He knew I was a rock singer and understood me. When he got down on his knees — I knew I made the right choice,” she

says. “It was one of the best moments of my life.” Perkins worked with Levine, whom she still keeps in touch with two years later, throughout the show, and he helped her nail her performances and grow as a performer. “The biggest thing he instilled in me was confidence. He always told me to trust my gut and let go. And he was always right,” she says. On the show, Perkins was in “sponge mode,” taking every opportunity to learn from those around her, including her fellow contestants who she still keeps in touch with. “I had this amazing opportunity and I wanted to take full advantage of it,” says Perkins, who grew especially close to her coach Levine. “I hold him on such a pedestal. He couldn’t have been better.” Perkins made it to the semifinals and worked with such performers as Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. When she was voted off, it was devastating. “I told myself I’d be ready to go if I got voted off, but I felt lonely and had a huge void.” Adding to the pain, she had to stay in LA another week through the show’s finale. “I felt like everyone was going off to have fun every day and I was left behind.” But her fans were waiting for her back home.

Life After La-La Land Now two years after her blind audition, Perkins is busier than ever. She released her first single, “Fearless,” in 2014, which rose to No. 5 on iTunes. While promoting that, she began working on her first full-length album, “Drive,” which she independently produced and released in July 2015. “I had so much to say,” Perkins says of writing the album. To help gain focus, she called on local musician friends whom she eventually featured on the album. “Being able to shine a light on all of the great talent in this community is really rewarding,” she says. “It was

inspiring.” The record shot to No. 20 on iTunes.

as The United Way and The Regions Hospital Burn Center.

While continuing to work on music, she’s also dabbling in educating the next generation by leading school assemblies about bullying, being brave, being kind, and leaving a legacy. “Motivating kids keeps me motivated. They inspire me so much,” she says. “I feel compelled to inspire kids and make our next generation great.”

And this holiday season, Kat’s debuting a new idea: a Christmas show. “A Kat Perkins Christmas” runs December 1, 2, 13 and 22 at Plymouth Playhouse. Born on Dec. 23, “I’m all about Christmas,” she says. The show features her take on favorite rockin’ renditions of favorite holiday classics.

To stay involved in the community, Perkins — who lives in Bloomington with her longtime boyfriend Eric Warner (who was in her band Scarlet Haze) — regularly lends her talents to fundraisers for such organizations

Finding Her Look For Kat Perkins, there is a direct relation between her music and her fashion. “My look and hair and makeup are almost just as important as what I sound like,” she says. With 35 tattoos and raven-black hair, Perkins appears to be 100 percent rockstar, but the nearly five-foot musician is also a self-described “girly girl.” “Fashion has always been important to me and I’ve really evolved,” she says. The biggest influence on her current look came from “The Voice.” “The stylists there knew how to dress my body, I trusted them, and I loved not having to make the decision about what I was wearing,” she says, adding that she sometimes didn’t even look in the mirror before stepping out on stage in front of millions of TV viewers. And she loved how she looked and felt.

28

West End Compass | theshopsatwestend.com

Perkins has hit her stride blending her two passions: music and kids, while being able to give back. “I’m in a really good place,” she says, crediting the Twin Cities for much of her success. “This community has always been so kind to me and lifted me up, which is priceless and amazing.”

So when Perkins returned home, she wanted to maintain her new look and pay attention to trends. She started by going to The Shops at West End and looking at mannequins. “I was on my own and had to learn this,” Perkins says. “But I knew I needed help.” So she walked into such stores as Apricot Lane and Evereve and relied on stylists there. “They had seen the show, so they knew the look I was going for,” Perkins says. “And everyone was so eager to help me.” Two tips from The Voice that have stuck with her are all about elongating her short frame: rolling up her sleeves and paying attention to the cuts of shirts. “I learned a ton about my body and how to dress it so that it looks good from all angles.” To maintain her edgy, but approachable, look, Perkins’s go-to is accessories. “I learned on ‘The Voice’ that anybody can start an outfit, but it takes special touches to finish a look.”
