Behind the scenes Hillary worked diligently to get contract's completed and all the hiring items necessary in place for an interim Executive Director and then the hiring of our wonderful Executive Director, Ashley. I appreciate all that Hillary did as the association president as well as all of her contributions to the association." - Clay Shuck, Director of Operations, Parks, Recreation, and Senior Services/Emergency Management, City and County of Broomfield

"While we give Hillary a hard time about to many executive sessions, it was truly an interesting time in CPRA's History. How do you replace an outgoing Executive Director while you are still recovering from the COVID pandemic? Hillary leadership through the process

“Hillary was amazing at making me, as a new board member, feel welcome in a new space. She is willing to use her own time to help others, including going for coffee with me so I could pick her brain and try to better understand how I could be a meaningful and helpful board

Lakewood Forestry Supervisor Leads Event to Honor Veterans By Kit Newland, Community Resources Director, City of Lakewood; edited by Amber Thill, Public Engagement & Operations Manager, City of Lakewood

On Wednesday, September 20, the Fort Logan Cemetery in Denver was buzzing with a cacophony of arborists and their equipment, working their magic to care for Fort Logan’s existing trees and planting new trees on the hallowed ground. The cemetery was hosting 285 volunteers from over 50 public and private organizations across the metro area and beyond, as part of the 9th Annual Saluting Branches event. Saluting Branches is a nonprofit organization dedicated to recognizing and honoring veterans. Since its inception in 2015, Saluting Branches has brought together over 15,000 arborists and tree care professionals at 100 veteran sites across 48 states. The hours volunteered by participants translate into more than $15 million worth of donated services to our country's veteran cemeteries. The City of Lakewood’s Forestry Supervisor, Luke Killoran, has led the Saluting Branches event at Fort Logan for the last four years. Killoran’s efforts to bring together the Colorado community of arborists to provide free tree care made the 9th anniversary the largest Saluting Branches event in the country.

6 • Colorado Byline | Fall 2023

an in-kind donation in services of over $250,000. To conclude this special day, Luke Killoran received the surprise award of Channel 7 Everyday Hero for his commitment and leadership. Other media coverage of the event included local news station reports on Channel 9 and Fox 31. "Providing free tree care services for our veterans is such a rewarding experience,” said Killoran, “There is nothing like it in our industry.” Volunteers joined the event from park and recreation agencies and private tree care companies across the metro area and from as far away as Gypsum, Colorado. Arborists brought their trucks and equipment including bucket trucks, tree grapples, stump grinders and other plant health care equipment to complete a hardworking, yet rewarding, day’s work in support of our nation’s veterans. Over the course of the day, 42 trees were planted, approximately 36 trees were removed, 75 trees were pruned, 26 trees were provided plant health care, and 24 stumps were removed equaling

Join us in extending a heartfelt thank you to our colleagues from the following agencies who participated in the Saluting Branches event this year including Denver, Boulder, Westminster, Broomfield, Northglenn, South Suburban, Highlands Ranch Metro District and the Colorado State Forest Service. Hyland Hills Parks & Recreation Renovates, Opens Hyland Hills Sports Center By Kellie Flowers, Communications Manager, Hyland Hills Park & Recreation District

The building at the southwest corner of Carroll Butts Park in Westminster has had many different purposes over the past 50 years. It first opened in 1971 as an indoor ice arena. In 2007, the building transitioned to the Carroll Butts Athletic Park, which hosted indoor soccer games as well as other sports.

Photos: Hyland Hills Parks & Recreation

Now, the building has evolved yet again to meet the needs of the surrounding community. After being stripped to its bones, the building was re-imagined and opened as the Hyland Hills Sports Center this September. The nearly 50,000-square-foot Sports Center now houses the expansive Donald E. VanArsdale Gymnastics Center; an indoor walking/jogging track; three multipurpose rooms for SilverSneakers classes, private rentals, and other recreation programs; and a gymnasium for indoor pickleball, basketball, and volleyball leagues and drop-in games. The need for the Sports Center was identified in Hyland Hills’ 2020 Master Plan, and while the Sports Center accommodates the needs of a changing community and growing Gymnastics program, it does more than expand Hyland Hills’ recreational offerings. “Before the Sports Center opened, the public went to our Administration Building for services including program registration and resident cards,” explained Yvonne Fischbach, Executive Director for Hyland Hills. Now, those services are offered with expanded hours at a location that the public already visits.

“In addition,” Fischbach continued, “Our front desk staff have more daily interactions with the public and see how they experience our programs. This strengthens our relationship with residents and helps us deliver the best possible customer service.”

Residents of the Hyland Hills Parks & Recreation District, as well as the City of Westminster, can receive resident drop-in and membership rates at the new facility. To learn more about Hyland Hills Parks & Recreation and the Hyland Hills Sports Center, visit hylandhills.org.

Creating, Designing and Utilizing an Interactive Online Employee Manual Your Staff Will Actually Want to Use By Katie Rummel, Communications Director, Thompson Rivers Parks and Recreation District

It’s not an easy task to get employees onboarded and keep organizational knowledge up to date or front and center for everyone to access easily. In reality, who actually reads an Employee Manual or reaches for one when you have a question or don’t know how to lock a door or where the water shut off is? Why not use current technology trends and collaborate with different departments to create an on-line interactive manual your employees will want to use. That is exactly what the Thompson Rivers Parks and Recreation District did after we knew expansion was on the horizon and we needed easy access to a centralized information system. We wanted to create a fun and interactive way for our employees to have all the information about TRPR at their fingertips and it had to be easy to use for

a wide range of employees, from teens in the concession stand area, aquatics staff, senior age site supervisors and instructors - and now our golf staff. We started off by gathering information and useful documents. Some of it was easy - some not so much. Understanding what all employees need to know to perform their jobs is a bit difficult but becoming a bit more intentional on including more staff levels in those discussions has helped. We were surprised at the things we maybe hadn't realized would be useful - building plans, tax exempt certificates, insurance cards, compensation policies, etc. Way easier than doing a Google Drive search where hundreds of documents are found, and you have no idea what is the right one. After we had as much information as possible gathered, it was time to work on the design. We created a page on our current website just for employees called the “Staff Playbook”. There is an important link section, sections for different facilities and departments, and “How To” videos. These “How To” videos are on operational procedures throughout our facilities and staff can easily access them on the website, or through QR codes we have placed at the appropriate locations. Have a question on vacation time or health insurance, the

playbook has you covered. Want to know who to call when the pool pump goes down or what to do if there is inclement weather? Yep, that’s in there too. All written District policies and operational contacts are in the playbook. The “Staff Playbook” continues to be a resource our staff uses on a daily basis and is continually updated as programs are added, facilities change, and new policies and procedures are implemented. We have integrated the playbook into part of our culture at TRPR, introducing it on day one with our employee onboarding process and continuing to ensure that employees have the power to say YES! You may visit trpr.org/playbook to view our current site and learn more.

The Digital Dance of Social Media: A Symphony of Strategies By Monica Bowser, Marketing Administrator and Katie Groke, Director of Community Services, Apex Park and Recreation District

In the ever-evolving world of social media, mastering the art of the digital dance has become essential for Parks and Recreation departments. To captivate and engage your audience effectively, one must embrace a dynamic approach that involves layering campaigns, getting creative across all platforms, mixing up posting times, and, surprisingly, ditching the printed guide.

Layer Your Campaigns Social media is more than just a singular platform; it's a complex ecosystem. To truly make an impact, consider layering your campaigns across various platforms. Different platforms cater to diverse demographics and content types. For instance, Instagram may be perfect for visually striking campaigns, while Twitter can be your go-to for real-time updates and engagement. Make sure you are posting to different platforms at different times and mix up the content while keeping the imagery the same so your audience recognizes the visual. Remember the more the better, when it comes to layers.

Get Creative on All Platforms Social media users have a voracious appetite for fresh and engaging content. Experiment with different types of content, from videos and infographics to polls and stories. Tailor your content to the platform and audience, and make sure you focus on telling your story. You can always layer in the “sales pitch” for programming but make sure to mix in some fun stories, photos and tidbits. Don’t underestimate a picture of a manager or coordinator with a quick tidbit about what they do. This will engage your audience and get them to investigate your programming, and then they are hooked. 10 • Colorado Byline | Fall 2023

Ditch the Guide In the ever-changing world of registration systems and flexible programming, a printed guide just does not make sense. Though it offers a good touchpoint of your brand, it doesn’t support reactive and proactive programming. Programmers need to be able to change on fly and being tied to something printed in a guide is just not how we do business anymore. In conclusion, mastering the digital dance of social media requires adaptability and creativity. Layer your campaigns across platforms, get creative with your content, vary your posting times, and be open to breaking the rules. The symphony of strategies will help you stand out in the crowded social media landscape and keep your audience engaged and intrigued.

Amplifying Parks and Recreation: Unveiling the Power of Marketing Hype Meetings By Monica Bowser, Marketing Administrator. Apex Park and Recreation District

Effective marketing is essential in parks and recreation to generate enthusiasm for our diverse programs. However, the collaboration between marketing teams and programmers often needs to be improved due to differences in expertise and perspective. We have created the Hype Meeting to recognize the need to unite these forces. This innovative approach combines parks and recreation marketing professionals and programmers to educate, inspire, and promote programs in a fun and creative setting while building the team experience necessary to excite our community for our programs. Picture a red carpet, a walk-up song, so much cheering, and a Marketing team member ready to pump you up. Then, everyone comes together, eager to exchange knowledge, insights, and industry expertise. This is the essence of a Hype Meeting—a fun, dynamic meeting designed to work together while igniting enthusiasm and collaboration within the entire team. At the core of the Hype Meeting is an immersive educational experience that empowers marketers to understand the

an environment of synergy and mutual appreciation, creating a project that will draw attention and sell their program.

programs in detail. Programmers take the spotlight, passionately showcasing their offerings, discussing features, highlighting unique benefits, and sharing success stories. That way, marketing staff can gain valuable insights, enabling them to understand the program's potential and effectively communicate its value to the community. The Hype Meeting acts as a catalyst for collaboration between marketing and programming and unites staff to foster

Ultimately, the Hype Meeting aims to ignite excitement within the entire team and effectively promote parks and recreation programs to the community. The collective enthusiasm generated during the event ripples out into the community, enticing individuals to participate and explore the diverse array of offerings available. From outdoor sports activities to educational workshops, community events, and cultural programs, the Marketing Hype Meeting lays the foundation for an inclusive and vibrant community that thrives on parks and recreation initiatives. The Hype Meeting represents a fun approach to bridging the gap between marketing and programmers. Through this united front, marketing and programmers inspire and empower one another, ultimately building a thriving community that embraces the parks and recreation opportunities at their disposal. At the end of the day, we could all use a little hype team!

Powering Up Recreation Center Design: Embracing Electrification for a Sustainable Future By Jodi Ross, OLC

Architecture is undergoing a transformation driven by the urgency of climate change and a sustainable future. One key aspect of this is electrification, a process that involves replacing traditional fossil fuel-based energy sources with electricity to power our buildings. This electrification movement is not only environmentally responsible but also offers numerous health, economic and logistical benefits. The primary targets for electrification are domestic hot water, building space heating, and cooking equipment. This move is largely feasible from a technical perspective, with the primary barriers being economic and logistical. While electricity may come at a higher cost per unit of energy, it offers several advantages. For instance, multiple energy sources reduce susceptibility to commodity price shocks. Furthermore, electrification is considered ‘future proof’ because it allows for easy switching

12 • Colorado Byline | Fall 2023

of energy sources via the mix of grid generation and can be decarbonized, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future. However, it’s crucial to note that most electricity production still involves some fossil fuel combustion. Electrification must be paired with efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the electricity generation sector or adding on site renewables.

Ways to Electrify Buildings Reducing Demand in New Construction: • Continuous insulation • Insulated glazing • Limiting air infiltration • Daylighting • LED lighting • Efficient aquatic systems with variablefrequency drives and regenerative media filters

Heating/Cooling Electrification Options: • Heat Pumps: Ground-Source, WaterSource, and Air-Source • Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems • Heat Pump Water Heating Ground Source Heat pumps are one of the most efficient all-electric options, utilizing the earth as a heat source or sink. They offer high heating and cooling efficiencies, making them a strong choice for recreational facilities. For existing buildings, reducing demand can be achieved through measures such as roof insulation, air infiltration control, daylighting (adding skylights), and LED lighting replacement.

Cost Electricity can be costlier per unit of energy compared to conventional fossil fuels, but high efficiency heat pump use less energy so detailed project analysis

is needed to estimate carbon savings. Construction costs as well need careful analysis and can be higher or lower in an allelectric building. Predictions indicate that carbon intensity in electricity production will decrease over time. This means that the carbon footprint of electrification will continue to improve, making it a more environmentally friendly option.

Why Electrify Our Buildings? Efforts to comply with energy codes are gaining a competitive edge by electrification. Some regions have even taken the bold step of outright banning new gas hookups, including Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, and others. The Investment Tax Credit and Production Tax Credit offer financial incentives for various electrification technologies, including ground-source heat pumps, solar photovoltaic systems, and solar thermal hot water systems. Colorado Energy Office offers its own set of incentives, including the Public Building Electrification Grant and the Geothermal Energy Grant Program. Additionally, utility incentives are available for equipment exceeding code requirements. Jurisdictions like Denver have taken the lead in mandating electrification, and there are numerous incentives available to encourage this transition. The long-term savings and a reduced carbon footprint achieved with electrification, when combined with other energy-efficient measures, such as improved insulation and LED lighting, it becomes a formidable force for sustainable design. The electrification of recreation centers is an investment in the health of our planet and the well-being of future generations.

THE MIRACLE LEAGUE OF METRO DENVER

Get involved. Change a life.

We are looking for volunteer buddies to assist with baseball games. Can you help?

Miracle League of Metro Denver is a 501(c)3 nonprofit in metro Denver that provides children and adults, who are living with various mental and/or physical challenges, an opportunity to play baseball as a team member in an organized league. The league was founded in 2006 as Sports Made Possible. In 2017 we affiliated with The Miracle League, a nationwide adaptive baseball league, and renamed to Miracle League of Metro Denver. Our baseball games are played at Schaefer Athletic Complex on a field with a rubberized surface – the only of its kind in Colorado – which makes getting around easy for wheelchair or visually impaired participants. The Miracle League of Metro Denver Competitive League provides an opportunity for participants to play the great game of baseball more independently than the recreational league. The goal of the league is to teach the players the fundamentals of baseball and place them in positions that will allow them to play baseball to his/her fullest potential. A modified scoring system help create a more competitive feel but ensures that each player can be a contributor to the team’s success. The philosophy of the league is that everyone bats, everyone scores and everyone wins in a non-competitive atmosphere.

Become a buddy.

We pair up each player participant with a volunteer buddy. Athletes play up to their abilities and may hit off a tee or from a pitcher. Volunteer buddies are instructed to help players bat, run bases, and play catch in the field. They also engage and encourage players to have fun in a positive environment.

Know a young person who may want to play?

If you know an athlete who would benefit by having a one-on-one buddy, this is the league for them! Scan the QR code below to learn more.

CPRA Agency Members: It’s time to plan ahead for the upcoming 2024 editions of Colorado Byline magazine. We want to feature your agency! Get featured in Byline and add being published in your state professional magazine to your resume!

Have something to share? Here's how: 1. Get Included in the NEW Keeping Up Section Keeping Up is a regular feature to highlight CPRA agency and member updates. This is a great place to submit articles about a special event, project, staff update, or retirement. Articles can be as short as one sentence or up to 300 words and can include a photo.

• Marketing & Communications – Website accessibility, social media, best practices, promotion, getting free press, handling crisis situations and de-escalation, creating selfie spots • Award-winning CPRA agency projects

Spring 2024 Deadline: April 5, 2024 • What’s Trending? Unique park, facility and programming ideas from around the state and around country • Programming in Small Communities - small town issues and solutions, staffing, keeping a community vibrant, grants for kids to be in sports • Community Collaboration and Partnerships Neurosensory programming (TR); sustainability of environment and programming (leave no trace), accessibility for trails

2. Submit a Feature Article We welcome article submissions from CPRA park and recreation agencies about topics relevant to our mission. Articles should be between 350-500 words and include 3-4 high-resolution photos. Suggested themes can be seen at right.

3. Send Article Leads/Ideas If you don’t have the bandwidth to submit an article but have an idea for an article that would fit one of our issue topics, please share it with us! Send a brief explanation of the article and who to contact for more details. We will do the leg-work to research and write the article for you whenever possible.

How to submit: Send your article or article topic, photos, and any other information to Jillian Strogis at jillians@cpra-web.org. If you have questions, please call (720) 588-0943. For reference, CPRA members can view past issues of Byline on www.cpra-web.org.

Summer 2024 Deadline: July 14, 2024 • 2024 Conference Preview • Using Tech for Good – recreation software, AI, staff tracking systems, virtual reality • Industry Partnerships – real projects, what’s working and what works, playground grants, sponsorships, making an impact, naming rights, grant writing and funding

Fall 2024 Deadline: September 27, 2024 • The Science of Play & Wellness – child development, inclusion, play for adults (outdoor fitness, interactive), mental health, combatting loneliness, senior engagement, art instruction • Successful Summer Program Highlights • 2024 Annual Conference in Review

CPRA Industry Partner Opportunities Get in front of CPRA members with a customized package including: Byline magazine advertising, sponsored editorial, online, email and event sponsorships. Single magazine and web ad opportunities are also available.
