Summer is Here! Who’s Ready for Action & Adventure? On behalf of the Board of Directors, we hope that you all had a great spring and are gearing up for all of your summer activities. This edition of the magazine is geared towards “Action & Adventure,” and we’re sure that you all have lots of adventures planned for your day camps and other programming this summer.
As for your association, those of you wanting to get in on the “action” are encouraged to submit your nominations for SCRPA Officers (Vice President and Secretary) through July 19. If you have any questions regarding elections, reach out to Past President T.J. Rostin. We are also accepting bylaw change requests at this time.
Speaking of “action,” the Statehouse just wrapped up this year’s session. The State Budget has been passed (pending Governor’s vetoes), and while there will be no extra PARD money this year, the Sports Tourism Grant Program was restored to $500K in PRT’s recurring budget. Once again, the SC Senate hit the “pause” button on a DSS expansion bill that would have affected your summer day camps and after school programs. We will continue to monitor any action on this legislation.
We also encourage you to continue your professional development by registering for our 74th Annual Conference (joint conference with NC) in Myrtle Beach, by becoming certified (or recertified) as a playground safety inspector (CPSI), and/or by applying for the 2020 class of our SC Leadership Enhancement And Development (SC LEAD) program.
At the national level, representatives from the Association’s Executive Committee spent two days in Washington D.C. meeting with our congressional delegates and their staff. Our primary focus was to thank those who supported the permanent reauthorization of LWCF, while requesting their consideration of permanently funding LWCF and providing some flexibility on the 6(F) requirement (requiring parks receiving LWCF funds having to remain in that function for perpetuity).
Finally, don’t forget to submit your applications for awards by June 28 and plan to join us for our 17th Annual Golf Tournament in Orangeburg on October 24. As always, if you should ever need anything, we’re here to help you all as we strive to create community through people, parks, and programs.

Looking for Ideas to Keep Campers Engaged All Summer Long? Join the Club! By Rebekah Morgan, Spartanburg County Parks Department Summertime is all about fun! For most kids, summer camp is a special time of year they have been looking forward to. So, as a summer camp coordinator, how do we plan on keeping these excited children interested in our camp all summer long? One way we are planning to achieve this goal is by implementing “interest clubs” that will coordinate with our weekly themes. To get started on the planning, we had many challenges, including: 1. What interest topics are appealing to children? 2. How long should each club be? 3. Who can effectively run the clubs? After several in depth discussions, we came up with a solid plan we’re excited about implementing.
Lastly, we decided to break the kids into two different age groups (4-8 year olds and 9-12 year olds) for most of the individual weeks. This allows us to have different age appropriate activities for each interest club. Some interest clubs, like gardening, will work for both age groups, so we’ll have everyone plant gardens in our raised beds. While the actual gardening interest club will last one week, the campers will be responsible all summer for maintaining the gardens. This activity is a fun and simple way to foster healthy living (growing and eating our very own vegetables), character building (responsibility-taking care of the gardens), growth (knowledge of agriculture) and hands-on activities to connect us to nature (gardening), all while turning the little’s ones thumbs green! We are excited for summer camp to begin and look forward to seeing the interest clubs bring educational fun to our participants and staff alike.
Since every child has different interests, from sports and music to art and cooking, and everything in between, we wanted to make sure we had wide-ranging topics that would have a broad appeal. When planning the clubs, we first selected kid friendly topics that would foster healthy living, character building, growth and a connection to nature through hands-on activities. Each week will feature a new club that meets twice within that week. Making the clubs just one week long allows us to introduce our campers to a wide array of topics and activities. Interest Club topics will include gardening, cooking, STEM, art, nature, animals and sports! We used our staff as our main resource to help plan and lead the club’s activities. When hiring staff, we ask them what their specials talents are, so that we can incorporate their gifts into their job responsibilities in ways that will benefit our programs. This allows us to fully utilize our staff’s knowledge, skills and abilities in a fun way that shows an investment in both our staff and the children we are serving.

By Kristen Guilfoos, Spartanburg County Parks Department
Somewhere between the ziplining, caving, white water rafting, kayaking and rock climbing, it hits you: this is not your average summer camp. This is Adventure Camp. It’s packed full of, you guessed it, adventure! Adventure Camp is specifically designed for ages 10-15 and it’s been a hit from the moment we started it five years ago. “This is for those kids that were starting to age our or get bored with traditional summer day camp,” says Recreation Director Kristie Oliver. “We wanted to amp up their camp experience.” Each camp is one week long, and since its inception, we’ve offered three sessions scattered throughout the summer. This year, however, we had so many people interested in signing up, we expanded it to six one-week sessions. All camp days begin and end at Lake Cooley Outdoor Education Center. Campers have an option to stay and camp overnight at the lake on Thursday night. Raven Collett has three children, Preston (14), Caleb (12) and Lilly (10) who all attended Adventure Camp for the first time ever in 2018. She says, “My trio was actually dreading going to camp last year because
they thought it would be the typical bowling on Mondays, trampoline place on Tuesdays, swimming Wednesdays, etc. Little did they know they were about to have the best summer ever! In fact, on the last day of camp, Lilly asked me if I could go ahead and sign her up for next year’s Adventure Camp now!” Her kids weren’t the only ones, though, who were blown away by their experience at camp. Collett adds, “As a parent, I was and am so impressed. My children got to get out of the house, put the electronics down, and experience new adventures as well as make new friends.” Each week of camp costs $170, which includes all field trips and activities. Oliver says, “One of our big goals was to make this camp affordable. Many families cannot afford a residential camp experience for their kids where these activities are abundant. This gives our 10-15 year olds a taste of popular outdoor recreation activities in hopes that they find a passion to pursue them throughout their lives.” There’s another benefit too, says Oliver, whose daughter is an adventure camper. “She is so worn out from all the fun at the end of the day, she falls asleep in the car on the way home!”

T he “No Wrong Way to Play” Camp By Rachel Kennerly, Park Ranger, Saluda Shoals Park, Columbia, South Carolina
Sitting in the heart of the Midlands of South Carolina is Saluda Shoals Park, where our community comes to experience the outdoors. For a child between four and seven years old, that means attending Critter Camp where campers experience three days filled with energetic adventures, ecological games, and furry crafts. This camp provides young children the chance to explore and learn about nature. Piaget’s Stages of Cognitive Development and Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) states that empathy, nature play, and relationships with animals are the key learning methods for early childhood ages. Therefore, if a five year old wants to pretend to be a squirrel, it would be considered an appropriate and effective learning method. Utilizing the correct learning methods for the age group maximizes the educational value of the camp experience. Effectively implementing these practices requires applying two key strategies as camp facilitators.
The first strategy is simple-there is no wrong way to play as long as everyone is safe. As camp leaders, we do not impose an activity’s intended outcome on the camper. The key to make this successful is utilizing multisensory materials. Two examples of those materials are a matching game with cards that have tactile animal pictures like felt beavers and pleather lizards or an activity where things really smell by using various food extracts. Get creative! If the child doesn’t complete the matching activity, but pretends the matching card is the real animal, that is also acceptable! In the early childhood years, that is learning! The second strategy is do not impose your idea of “play” or your personal perception of fun on the camper. This strategy is often more difficult than anticipated. It is usual for camp facilitators to plan games but they must be open and observe campers during the games because children tend to have a magical talent for finding fun in unexpected places. As camp rangers, we play and explore alongside the campers, but we allow them to take the lead. Sensory bins and water are great ways to facilitate this. Additionally, a bucket of toy garden tools, plastic animals, and magnifying glasses

on a muddy trail is loads of fun! This gives the child the opportunity and space for their own personality and interests to guide their play. Some may explore, others will pretend to be a turtle, but either way so much is gained for each child. These two strategies applied will lead to children experiencing nature in their own personal way in a group setting. Since taking this approach, Saluda Shoals Critter Camp has seen an increase in camper engagement and fewer behavior issues.

Camp Live Oaks Looks to “Grow” Summer Camp Programming By Nina Guzzo, Recreation Specialist at City of Charleston Recreation Department Gardening is something I grew up doing with my Grandpop. I couldn’t wait for the weekends to visit his house because I was excited to see how our plants were doing. I was about six years old and it was “our thing” that we did together. Ever since then, I have developed a passion for gardening and I am striving to bring a gardening element to our 10-week, full-day summer camp at Bees Landing Recreation Center, Camp Live Oaks. My goal is to start a community garden at Bees Landing to enhance the facility and bring educational programming to camp. Youth garden programs are being rolled out nationwide because the educational components and positive outcomes are
endless. They are used to improve social skills and behaviors through naturally inspiring kids to talk to each other in an unforced way. There are many opportunities for positive social interaction and teamwork. Through intergenerational connections, camp staff and campers can share in the activity and develop mutual respect. Using a garden as a facility’s highlighted feature brings people together and offers a broader support network. More people into the facility means more networking connections, which could be beneficial when seeking community support, such as sponsorships or volunteers. A garden increases parental involvement because it serves as a place to spend family time after a child is picked up from camp or a place to visit together on the weekends. It builds a sense

of confidence in the children by making them feel capable and proud to grow something. Gardening also develops STEAM principles and analytical abilities through this hands-on experiential learning process. Not only will daily garden maintenance be programmed into the camp’s daily schedule, but it will also be used to incorporate aspects of science, technology, art, and environmental education. In addition, there will be hands-on lessons relating to plant growth and life cycles, soil structure and function, ecosystems, weather, and sustainability. The plan is to start out with two, 8ft by 4ft raised beds. By the first day of camp, the raised beds will be constructed and filled with compost from the local recycling/ composting center. The first session of

The second session we will plant types of beans from seeds and start to incorporate a STEAM learning approach. They will use the scientific method to see if it is better to soak the seeds in water before planting, and also engineer a few trellis structures to see which is best for the beans to climb up. Throughout the sessions, other various art, science, engineering, and environmental education lessons will be incorporated into the garden. Once our summer camp

Ashley River Adventure Race By Eric Davis & Pam Zanowski, Dorchester County Parks & Recreation
The scenic Ashley River, jewel of the Lowcountry, teems with opportunities for action and adventure. On March 2nd, Friends of Dorchester County Parks (FDCP) and Dorchester County Parks and Recreation partnered to produce the inaugural Ashley River Adventure Race, the vision of County Councilman Jay Byars.
The race was a biathlon. The first leg featured a sneak peak of the future Ashley River Park property with a cross country 5K through woods roads, meadows and riverside singletrack trails and boardwalks. The second leg presented a kayak or SUP paddle beginning on the wooded, twisting upper reaches of the Ashley and finishing in the marsh fringed plantation district 8.5 miles downstream. Multiple divisions provided options for everyone to get in on the action no matter the ability level. The most serious athletes competed in the individual category doing both the run and paddle. Some preferred a little company and completed the entire course with a buddy in the tandem division. Yet others split up the race legs as a relay team. Those that just couldn’t ‘sit’ still, or were eager for an even more strenuous core workout, powered their SUPs down the river course. Others just wanted to enjoy the day without all the stress of racing, and participated in the Fun Float, which cut the bothersome running out altogether! And just how good can any adventure race be without an accompanying after party? As an incentive for racers to run and paddle faster, The Inn at Middleton Place served as the finish line where live music, frosty beverages, lawn games and a country style BBQ buffet awaited under ancient oaks on the riverside bluff. Organizers and participants alike deemed this first-time event a resounding success! Racer Jack Cunningham of Beaufort was impressed: “I predict that in the future they’re going to have to put in a participant cutoff. It was that great a race. The fun, the camaraderie, running the park trails rather than pavement, the waterway is just gorgeous – it’s a whole different environment.” One hundred eighty-five racers took up the challenge of the Ashley, and another 65 fun floaters and spectators participated and livened up the party. An awards ceremony recognized divisional winners. The fastest racers received unique trophies honoring them as Ashley River Navi-Gators!

IKO Small Footprint. Huge Play Value. www.berliner-playequipment.com
Most participants came from the Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester Tri-County area, but many racers hailed from outside the region and state as well. Running quality events with challenging logistics require effective partnerships, teamwork and cooperation – especially for a nascent parks and recreation department comprised of only 2 full-time employees! The race could not have flourished without the important contributions of 45 volunteers including those from Summerville High School Navy JROTC, Crunch Fitness, FDCP volunteers, and various community members. And a race can’t be fun if it’s not safe. Dorchester County Fire & Rescue, Emergency Medical Services and Sheriff’s Office, as well as SC Department of Natural Resources and the City of North Charleston Police Department, all contributed to safety and emergency coverage. Furthermore, many community sponsors made generous cash or in-kind donations. Their support enabled nearly $10,000 in event proceeds to benefit FDCP, whose mission is “to improve the quality of life in our community by supporting county wide efforts to enhance diverse public park and recreation opportunities.” Undoubtedly, goals of generating excitement about future park facilities and introducing folks to the beauty of the Ashley River were met through a day packed full of action and adventure. Teamwork was the key to these accomplishments. Everyone can’t wait for the 2020 installment of the Ashley River Adventure Race!

WHIRLIN’ WATERS OPENS “THE WASHOUT” WATERSLIDE IN CHARLESTON COUNTY
By Sarah Reynolds, Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) is excited to bring some new adventure to its Whirlin’ Waters Adventure Waterpark this summer! This summer, The Washout, the first new attraction since Whirlin’ Waters opened in 2001, opens for guests. Named after the surfing area of Folly Beach washed out by Hurricane Hugo, The Washout will be the tallest waterpark attraction in the Charleston area. Guests go down the 60-foot-tall water ride on multi-person rafts. The attraction offers two separate exhilarating experiences. The
pink ride features a steep drop that takes riders up a near-vertical wall for a moment of weightlessness before they zoom back down into a splash pool. The turquoise ride features fast, near-vertical oscillations; highspeed twists and turns down an enclosed serpentine flume; and turns around 90 degree corners. The Washout has been highly anticipated by locals and longtime Whirlin’ Waters guests, who had been asking for a new attraction at the park for years. When word got out about its construction, CCPRC staff knew they’d have to ensure the public had an

accurate timeframe during which to expect the opening. “One of the first factors to consider in the planning of a new feature or facility is timing. It is imperative that the completion of the project is planned to happen several months before the opening of the feature or facility,” said Park General Manager Edmonds Brown. “Every construction contract includes a provision for delays based upon weather or unforeseen events.” Even though the opening date for The Washout was scheduled for May 4 of this year, the contract called for substantial

completion by March 15. With rain delays, the substantial completion date was pushed to April 1, with the final completion by May 1.
Located in North Charleston, Whirlin’ Waters Adventure Waterpark is the largest of three waterparks owned by CCPRC.
“Everything is on a tightrope with one setback leading to another. If you know the project cannot be completed on time, it is better to postpone the project to a date when it can be completed on time,” said Brown.
The Washout was funded through a general obligation bond that CCPRC was grateful to have received Charleston County approval to issue. Other projects to be funded through the bond in years to come include construction of a new dog park at Wannamaker County Park, construction of an aquatic center in Hollywood, and planning and development of several new parks throughout the county.
Existing attractions at the park include the Big Splash Tree House, a lazy river, the Big Kahuna wave pool, Tubular Twister slides, a mat racer slide and a kiddie area. The wave pool also got an update this year with a brand new mural by famed local artist Douglas Panzone.
THE WASHOUT HAS BEEN HIGHLY ANTICIPATED BY LOCALS AND LONGTIME WHIRLIN’ WATERS GUESTS, WHO HAD BEEN ASKING FOR A NEW ATTRACTION AT THE PARK FOR YEARS.

The largest aquatic center in South Carolina is scheduled to open later this year in North Charleston. The facility will host local, regional and national swim meets and other events, but more importantly, will provide free swim lessons to help local children become water safe. The $23 million natatorium is a collaboration between North Charleston and Dorchester School District 2.

“What we are doing is, we are taking our resources, the school district is taking their resources, and we are doing something twice as good as either of us could do by ourselves so that the entire community benefits, especially our children,” said North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey. In 2012, school district voters approved $7.5 million to build an indoor pool. Around the same time, North Charleston had dreams of building its own facility on the city’s west side, much of which happens to fall within the District 2 attendance lines. About 30,000 of North Charleston’s 110,000 residents live in Dorchester County. Therefore, in 2016, the two entities agreed to pool their resources. The long-awaited aquatic facility, currently under construction on Patriot Boulevard, adjacent to Fort Dorchester High School, will feature a 10-lane, 50-meter competition pool and an 8-lane, 25-yard therapy pool. A movable bulkhead will allow the competition pool to also be used as a 25-yard or 25-meter short course pool.
The 53,000-square-foot center will also have retractable seating for 1,000 spectators, locker rooms, administrative offices, and community meeting space. It will be the home pool for year-round youth and adult swim teams and host local, state and national level competitions, creating an economic benefit for the city, its hotels and nearby businesses. The priority, though, will be school district residents. All second-grade students in District 2 will receive free swim lessons during the school year. In addition, Fort Dorchester and District 2’s other high schools, Summerville and Ashley Ridge, will have priority use during the high school swim season. The aquatics staff is already fielding inquiries and preparing bids for meets, triathlons and other events. Water aerobics, water polo, swim lessons, birthday parties and more will also be held at the center. The project also included a connector road from Patriot Boulevard to Fort Dorchester High School, completed in October.
“Countless DD2 students and North Charleston residents will learn to swim, the school district’s aquatics programming will finally have an appropriate home, and we will proudly host swimming competitors from around the country,” said the mayor.

FUN + FITNESS + MOTIVATION = PICKLEBALL! By Kim Coleman, Recreation Manager, City of Aiken Parks, Recreation & Tourism Department
Some Saturdays, you just want to sleep in. Some Saturdays, action calls. What began as a cool, damp and overcast Saturday morning in one of our city parks turned out quite to be the opposite during an event celebrating National Pickleball Month (April)! 20 SOUTH CAROLINA Recreation and Parks • www.scrpa.org
The free April 6th event was a 10:00 a.m. Pickleball Clinic that was a collaboration between the City of Aiken Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department, a sub-committee from our Recreation Commission, a local and VERY passionate pickleball group named the PickleDilly’s, and some interested citizens. The main goals of the clinic were to attract and recruit people of all ages, abilities, cultures and ethnicities to learn the game of pickleball and to expose them to fun physical activity, while also enhancing their quality of life. We also hoped to stir up some interest in the neighborhood where these relatively new pickleball courts were located. Pickleball continues on page 20…

Play never told me you can’t or don’t or you shouldn’t or you won’t. Play isn’t one thing. It’s everything. Anything. Play doesn’t care what a body can or cannot do. Because play lives inside us. All of us. And as we grow older. As the world comes at us with you can’t or don’t or you shouldn’t or you won’t. We come back to what we know. That imagination will never fail us. That words will never hurt us. That play will always shape us. To see the new We-Go-Round™, visit playlsi.com/we-go-round

DID YOU KNOW…April was National Pickleball Month? The first twenty people to register received a free pickleball paddle of their very own (sponsored by Meybohm Realtors), a backpack packed with snacks and water, plus a brand new pickleball to take with them after completion of the clinic. The clinic was so well received that an additional one was organized to take place immediately after completion of the first. These participants also received all of the same items as the first group, due to the generosity of the Aiken community. With the sport of pickleball normally having more adult participation, the committee reached out to an organization named Helping Hands, Inc. that provides shelter and assistance to children who have been removed from their homes for a variety of reasons. Approximately twenty youth registered ranging from ages 5 -17 years. All of them were very excited to participate and could not believe that they were going to
actually be able to keep the paddles, backpacks and supplies. The highlight of the day was an organization named Paddle –Up Sports, owned and operated by Mr. Kim Sharpton. We had been told ahead of time that he would be doing something special to get the participants warmed-up, but really had no idea how he would do it. Mr. Sharpton describes his company as a “pickleball market influencer” and he is absolutely right. He had everyone from ages 5-75 dancing around to the music and learning a variety of pickleball stances and strokes before they even knew it. Even people who were there to just watch became engaged. For an early April day that started out cool, damp and overcast, it turned out to be warm, sunny and action packed! The community has gained a new love for pickleball - the “fastest growing sport” in Aiken!

The Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission would like to highlight Jordan O’Keefe for the Everyone Can Make A Difference Award.
This upcoming year she has secured $69,300 for the afterschool program and was awarded $36,400 for the purchase of a Jacobs Law Compliant 12 Passenger Van, which will increase the opportunities even more for our special needs population.
Jordan O’Keefe is our district-wide Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator. In this position, she provides recreational opportunities for individuals in our community with special needs, thus enhancing their lives on a daily basis.
Jordan’s enthusiasm and passion for making a difference in the community has established friendships with many local organizations including: The Ausome Gym, Family Connections, The Autism Academy, U of SC Athletics, and Spring Hill High School’s Recreation Therapy Department.
Throughout her career with ICRC, she has more than doubled participation in the Afterschool Adventure program and the Super Summer Camp at Seven Oaks Park. Her vision, passion and dedication lead to establishing an Afterschool Adventures program at Crooked Creek Park in 2015, averaging eight participants per year. Jordan not only coordinates athletics programs and additional programming opportunities at both parks for our special needs community members, she also plans and implements special events including theater performances and daily life skills classes. The majority of the funding for these opportunities comes from grants that Jordan pursues and manages throughout the year.
In addition to her responsibilities as the Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator, Jordan volunteers for positions on our Holiday Lights Committee managing the Gift Shop, is a member of the Irmo Middle School Improvement Council, is a member of the SCRPA LEAD Program, and has been a wealth of knowledge and insight in formulating a plan to build an inclusive playground at Saluda Shoals Park. Jordan has also found time to be a speaker at the Programming Summit and the SCRPA conference. Jordan is the definition of Everyone Can Make A Difference. We are very proud and humbled to have her on our team and as a member of our ICRC family and community.
Jordan’s enthusiasm and passion for making a difference in the community has established friendships with many local organizations. Submitted by Jeff Mayberry, Recreation Supervisor, Aiken County PRT Aiken County department of Parks, Recreation, & Tourism would like to submit Mr. Casey Moss as the employee nomination for “Everyone Can Make a Difference”. Casey Moss has been with Aiken County for almost 3 years. He is our Park Supervisor for Harrison Caver Park, one of our largest parks in our system covering 39 acres. On a daily basis, Casey maintains the park and always makes sure it looks its best for our patrons. This includes field prep, bathroom cleaning, mowing, weed
eating, trash removal and other general maintenance activities. Additionally, he assists in program coordination and is occasionally called to help out at our other parks. He is always ready to lend a helping hand to his fellow employees. Casey often works over his weekly 40 hours to ensure the patrons of our parks have the best experience while visiting. Casey’s work with Aiken County is only a small piece of what makes Casey special; he has been a member of the South Carolina Army National Guard for two years.. In the guard, his duties include some weekend training and on occasion, he is called to assist with disaster relief in other areas of the country. As you can see, Casey is a very special employee. Aiken County is lucky to have him.
Casey’s work with Aiken County is only a small piece of what makes Casey special; he has been a member of the South Carolina Army National Guard for two years.
