Speaker Series The 3-day programme of world class content welcomes some of design’s most expansive thinkers and aims to present inspirational content, new ideas, as well as learning outcomes that provide useful, practical tools for practice.

FUTURE OF DESIGN

THE

Under the umbrella theme of ‘The Future of Design,’ each of the three days will focus on different elements of the forward-facing factors shaping design in the future; forecasts and design trends, technology and digital design, and collaboration for health and well-being. Opening the programme, keynote speaker, Lidewij Edelkoort spearheads this focus with the highly anticipated delivery of her future design trends for 2016 and beyond, bringing a societal perspective to the architecture and design discussion. ‘Embryonic Architecture’ with the associated notions of incubating, gestation and nurturing is a new vision for the 21st century with a return to purity and amplification of human feeling. The afternoon session will see, Margo Konings and Margriet Vollenberg lead a panel comprised of leading design writer David Harrison, curator Sarah K and designers Henry Wilson and Adam Cornish to discuss the benefits and challenges for designers participating in international design events, sharing their experience as organisers, curators and participants respectively. Exploring what drives so many designers to travel, the panel will also discuss what their perceptions maybe as to the cultural impact of these fairs on the hosting city or country.

Following their presentation, the panel will be joined by Justin Northrop and Nicholas Travers of Melbourne based practice, Techné Architects as they discuss their design approach in the fields of residential and hospitality design and how both sectors of work are often influenced and inspired by each other in their studio.

www.designEX.info

Continuing on Thursday the discussions consider the theme of technology, this day of talks centres on designers who use technology as an inherent part of their innovation, experimentation and day to day work in ways that bring various factors of production closer together. The programme has been curated by architect and designer Tomek Archer of Tomahawk Studios and Archer Breakspear in a series of sessions that present speakers from a mix of disciplines who can all provide alternative perspectives on architecture, design, manufacturing, construction and technology. On the final day at designEX, the tone of the programme shifts to look at how a rigorous focus on organisational and employee wellbeing fosters creativity and innovation, and how exciting new collaborations between design and industries are driving fresh innovation, often in unlikely areas. With this topic in mind, Melbourne-based artist and designer, Leah Heiss, will discuss how she uses advanced technologies to develop human-scale projects. Collaborating with a range of disciplines including nanotechnology, medicine, manufacturing and computer science, Leah’s work is bridging the gap between science and design. But it’s not just future trends that have our panels focus but also the future generation of design as our Student and Recent Graduate Programme brings a full roster of practical sessions and talks to younger designers: Joining them will be Melbourne manufacturer Tait, as they build the case for teaming up with young talent to bring benefits to manufacturing business. Studio Design UK, the team who created the entrance experience for this year’s designEX share their experiences of designing in temporary spaces and marketing across borders. While Melbourne collaborative studio, Assemble explore low impact medium density development and the future of Australian capital cities and self-taught paper engineer Benja Harney shares his passion for paper.

Introduced at designEX in 2011, NEST provides a platform that fosters independent designers, showcasing their works on a commercial stage. The ‘by-invitation’ installation celebrates the work of some of the country’s most progressive studios by exhibiting alongside major retailers and other leading industry suppliers. For NEST14 the space has been reconfigured to occupy a more fluid floor plan moving away from a traditional stand structure to encourage greater interactive engagement and further complement the product presentations. MILAN SALONE DEL MOBILE Collaboration and cross-disciplinary design key to this year’s Milan Furniture Fair. From the highly commercial exhibits of the mega furniture brands, through to the experimental work by designers from all corners of the globe, Milan’s Salone del Mobile 2014 was another extravaganza celebrating all things design. This year’s Salone del Mobile was the first chance to see the changes that new president of the fair Claudio Luti has proposed, including making sure there is a concentration of the big brands and making Milan a better experience for those visiting, including doing something about expensive accommodation and improving transport to the fair. Luti is also the president and owner of Italian powerhouse brand Kartell, which always had one of the biggest and best designed stands at the fairgrounds in Rho. This year, the brand strayed from their signature material, plastic, instead presenting some of their key iconic pieces from previous years with a glossy metal finish in a collection

called ‘Precious Kartell.’ Meanwhile, Japanese designer Tokijin Yoshioka’s new piece for the company ‘Sparkle’ had the look of cut crystal.

well as others from several countries in Europe and also Asia, Africa, the US, South America, and Australia and New Zealand.

Also re-releasing iconic design was Danish brand Fritz Hansen, which this year puts the Drop chair into production. This distinctive teardrop-shaped chair was designed by Danish master Arne Jacobsen for the SAS Royal Hotel along with the Egg and Swan chairs in 1956 and is no doubt set to be as popular as its sisters.

The organisers, Ventura, were also presenting outside of the Lambrate district for the first time, with a special exhibition by Dutch conceptual designer Maarten Baas called ‘Baas is in Town.’ Located at a new 500m2 exhibition space in the centre of Milan, the exhibition showed Baas’s recent work, including a new collaboration with London’s Workshop Gallery, as well as works by other designers such as Bertjan Pot and Belgian fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck.

Other major brands, such as Moroso, Vitra and Magis released various new pieces by famous global designers such as Jaime Hayon, Patricia Urquiola, Ross Lovegrove, Hella Jongerius, Jasper Morrison, Barber Osgerby and Benjamin Hubert, to name a few. Away from the fairgrounds, there was plenty to see also, with Ventura Lambrate emerging in recent years as a major destination for emerging and established talent from around the world. This year, the majority of exhibitors were Dutch, followed by German and Italian exhibits, as

Australia and New Zealand’s contribution to Ventura Lambrate was The Other Hemisphere, an exhibition showing the work of 12 design studios curated by Sydney-based Sarah K in collaboration with Ventura Lambrate curators and founders Margriet Vollenberg and Margo Koning. Reflecting a move towards collaboration, the exhibition featured the work of 24 individual designers,

2 014 OV ERV IE W including conceptual designer Elliat Rich, rising star Henry Wilson and Supercyclers, the design team taking reuse of materials to a whole new level. designEX is the principal sponsor of The Other Hemisphere which will be rebuilt for the exhibition from 28-30 May. While collaborative work is emerging as a key design trend, so is multidisciplinary design, with two major figures from the design world releasing new fashion collections this year. London-based experiential and object designer Faye Toogood teamed up with her sister Erica Toogood – also a clothing and product designer – to present Communiqué. The collection featured eight sculptural coats made in hardwearing materials inspired by workers and photographed in raw black and white. And Dutch trends futurist Lidewij Edelkoort presented her new collection Fetishism, using fetishized materials to create sculptural clothing pieces, blurring the lines between object and fashion design. Edelkoort will be in Australia courtesy of designEX to present the event’s

keynote lecture, a two hour presentation including a 2016 lifestyle, architecture and interiors trend forecast (tickets on sale now). Meanwhile, at another design destination during the fair, Spazio Rosanna Orlandi, Beirut-based designers Bokja presented their Good Things Collection. The design and craft studio are known for their craft approach to furniture, creating bespoke pieces for the likes of Li Edelkoort and Christian Louboutin, this year releasing their first readyto-manufacture collection. In addition, this year Bokja exhibited a ceramics collection ‘Capture the Moment,’ featuring happy moments from their lives in a personal design that is ultimately beautiful. Bokja designers Hoda Baroudi and Maria Hibri said: “The plates, to us, are a very personal story. The people featured are dear, they’re part of our Bokja family and the moments are real. We live in a country immersed in conflict and this year has been difficult like no other. We are taking time to capture fleeting moments, fast

laughs and slow jazz. This year Bokja just wants to bring in the happy”. The future of design is hard to predict, but based on this year’s Milan furniture fair, there is a trend towards the collaborative and the multi-disciplinary. Even the big brands are drawing on iconic pieces from the past, or steering towards new materials, with an emphasis less on the grand gesture and more on quality and authenticity.

THE OTHER HEMISPHERE Australian and International design direct from Milan to Sydney Sarah K is joined by Margriet Vollenberg + Margo Konings of Dutch practice Organisation In Design, in curating the second survey exhibition of contemporary Australian and New Zealand design presented at Ventura Lambrate in Milan, April 2014. Margriet Vollenberg and Margot Konings carefully put together the entire selection of exhibitions presented at Ventura Lambrate which, heading into its 5th year in 2014, has built an audience of 60,000 visitors and growing. Ventura Lambrate has from its inception, fulfilled a role during Milan Design Week as the destination for the most avant-garde ideas in design. Over half of the 12 selected design practices are collaboratives, which Sarah K believes is representative of the way the best design thinking is currently headed. GROUPWORK (VIC) is an ongoing collaborative initiative where artists, makers & designers come together to consider everyday objects and moments. The project team for Simplify TOH2014 includes: GROUPWORK director Sarah Trotter, who working in the fields of architecture and food, has a particular interest in the small moments and details that contribute to creating place; with, Murray Barker who has recently returned to Melbourne from working with Adjaye Associates in Berlin and London; and artist Esther Stewart whose work reflects an architectural sensibility that investigates activation and participation in environments using surface and colour. Field Experiments (VIC) is the result of a three-month project based in Bali, which explored how objects might be embedded within a culture and its people. A multidisciplinary design collective comprised of Melbourne artist/designer, Paul Marcus Fuog together with Benjamin Harrison Bryant (New York City, United

12

States), and Karim Charlebois-Zariffa (Montreal, Canada) set up a studio in a small farming community. Their daily design experiments in masonry, woodcarving, weaving, painting, kite making and batik in partnership with the local craftspeople has produced a collection of objects that shatter the traditional definition of the souvenir. &company (NSW) is a broker of creative opportunity, bringing together emerging designers, the creative community and makers for exhibitions and events in Sydney’s first public workshop for design entrepreneurs. The &company (Online) Store launched with new exclusive work from 5 Australian designers in ‘Simple Pleasures,’ a collection of tools that bring quiet satisfaction to everyday rituals. After designer fees, all sales contribute to a fundraising campaign for the workshop. TOH2014 presents work from three of these designers. Industrial designer Andrew Simpson’s (Vert Design) Junk Press takes wasteful junk-mail and converts it into beautiful functional bowls. Simplicity is driven by the making process for Jeweller and metalsmith Alison Jackson whose hand-formed stainless steel Cheese Tools in restrained, minimalist, elegant forms are effortless to use. Anna Lise De Lorenzo’s Good Wood* is an exploration of the value of materials and time using an old olive tree felled from her yard and extending its life by producing from it as many hand-carved utensils as possible. Dowel Jones (VIC) are two thirds of award-winning design collective LAB DE STU, Melbourne based furniture designers, Dale Hardiman and Adam Lynch craft beautifully made products that address sustainability and push the boundaries of design innovation through their company Dowel Jones. Started in 2013, the studio works with manufacturers involved in

the development of everyday materials and objects and is interested in simplifying objects to their bare essentials minimising materials and processes but without compromising on aesthetic values. Henry Wilson with Benja Harney & Bianca Chang (NSW) A recipient of the HSP Huygens scholarship at The Design Academy Eindhoven for Postgraduate studies, designer Henry Wilson’s Sydney studio is notable for the readapting of several disused shipping containers on a vacant industrial site. Though multidisciplinary; the studio is currently focussing on locally produced furniture and lighting and whether it be revisiting existing objects or producing new work, is dedicated to experimenting on the process of design and production. Benja Harney is a self-taught paper engineer based in Sydney who has applied his skills across a wide range of creative fields over the past eight years with notable collaborations including those with Google, Hermes, Kylie Minogue, Romance was born, Lego Artbank and the QVB. Young Sydney based designer and paper artist Bianca Chang creates extraordinary, complex and subtle paper sculptures that play with shadow and light. The Fortynine Studio (NSW) is a multidisciplinary collaborative design studio based in Sydney. The Fortynine Studio produce work for research, exhibition, retail and commission and also develops self-initiated projects. The varying backgrounds, sensibilities and approaches of the studio’s key members, Lauren Austin, Ben Elbourne, Carly Hush, Sarah Spackman and Harriet Watts, allows them to work together across a range of scales, disciplines and materiality. They share a common ethos and foster an open collaborative

working environment, developing original work using local and recycled resources. With their own range of ceramics 'Flip Flop Slip' for sale online and in retail, last year they additionally launched 'Raw', a collection of ceramic tableware in collaboration with Jardan. They are currently developing a suite of objects that explores and expressed Australia's unique understanding of the regenerative aspects of bushfire. Drawing from these explorations, they are also currently working with The Other Hemisphere and St Ali to design and make espresso cups. Supercyclers (NSW) is a collective of designers focussed on expanding means of incorporating sustainability into our designed and built world. Launched by Sarah K and Liane Rossler in 2011, the project is dedicated to forward-thinking and surprising sustainable design solutions and Supercyclers has since been exhibited all over the world and produce a range of objects for retail. Sarah K initiated The Other Hemisphere at Ventura Lambrate in Milan during the international Salone del Mobile 2011 and also runs Gallery Oh, a micro gallery in Rosebery, Sydney dedicated to showing international design/art work. Together with partner Ben Blakebrough she runs Blakebrough+King (b+k), from their workshop in the Southern Highlands of NSW where they produce works ranging from small-scale hand-made objects to built works on an architectural scale. Liane Rossler is most well known as a co-founder of iconic Australian design company, Dinosaur Designs and is now working across a very long list of diverse projects, all with design and sustainability at their core. Original supercyclers Sarah K and Liane Rossler are joined by supercycler and Melbourne-based designer and craftsperson Tamara Maynes in this exhibition.

The work of Auckland based industrial designer, Nathan Goldsworthy (NZ) extends from exhibitions and experiments to his eponymous furniture range distributed throughout New Zealand and Australia. His style is revealed in the design process, not so much in the finished work. What appears to be a rather eclectic body of work, is in fact, demonstrating a sensitivity to material and process, which drives the aesthetic of his pieces in a myriad of directions. Nathan spends most of his time at his home studio where he works on private and commercial commissions, while also expanding the considerable 'Goldsworthy' portfolio. The graphic and industrial designer, Timothy Tuppence (SA) is decidedly cross-disciplinary in his own practice. However, for the last three years he has been working as Khai Liew’s assistant, where he was involved in the design process and documentation of furniture pieces for private residences, exhibitions and the public domain from the initial concept stages and prototyping, to client presentations and the construction of final pieces. Timothy is currently based in the Netherlands where he is undertaking a Master of Contextual Design at the worldrenowned Design Academy Eindhoven. The work of Melbourne designer Gregory Bonasera is strongly influenced by natural forms, science, biology, botany and geometry. In 2010 he established Porcelain Bear Australia (VIC) and using CAD technology with 270-year-old methods of mould-making for ceramics and slip-casting, creates beautifully functional fine porcelain and bone china objects and lighting. He was soon joined by industrial designer Anthony Raymond and Porcelain Bear is a paradigm for innovation in pushing technical and aesthetic boundaries of porcelain. Gregory actively

exhibits his work internationally and has contributed works to exhibitions in Paris, London, Germany, Los Angeles, Bangkok, Tokyo and Australia. An inventor, designer and part time explorer, Elliat Rich (NT) is based in Alice Springs, where she uses meditative observation to identify small things and everyday moments that inspire her designed objects. Her underlying aim is to deliver an experience that lends itself to an everyday ritual; the ritual sustaining the object and in turn the object sustaining the experience. Drawing from her experiences to influence her practice, Elliat has traveled extensively throughout rural and remote Australia, both by road and on foot with teams of pack animals. She completed her degree with first class honors in 2005 and her work since has been shown both nationally and internationally. David Moreland’s Designs (NZ) studio produces high quality, innovative furniture and lighting solutions, as well as commissions, one offs and limited editions. His commercial clients include Air New Zealand, BNZ, Karen Walker, ANZ and Westpac. David graduated with a design degree majoring in 3-Dimensional Design in 1998, and went on to spend three years at Cicada Studios developing his own furniture and manufacturing David Trubridge Design's range. He is currently located in Auckland, designing and project managing for Simon James Design, as well as continuing with his own work.

Bathrooms & Kitchens

Schweigen, Paradigma Kitchen

Accelerating advances in technology and materials have seen the average kitchen and bathroom become anything but. Less defined by their function these living spaces have become more design-centric and, by incorporating sustainable products and surfaces, are getting tough on waste. Having served the world for 130 years, the standard flush toilet has not only been given an eco-friendly facelift but a complete design rethink. The Bidet Shop is a trailblazer in sourcing the very latest in bidet toilet suites and electric and natural water bidets. Their new luxury range are super water saving, tankless suites featuring highly efficient Torpedo flushing and are auto open, auto close, auto flush and pretty much auto everything without ever compromising on contemporary aesthetics. When it comes to being quietly efficient, Schweigen, sets new benchmarks designing Australia’s most efficient rangehoods with whisper quiet extraction. Their revolutionary silent rangehood concept removes the motor from the canopy and places it externally outside

the building. The Schweigen IsoDrive motors are also among the most energy efficient in the market, requiring just 62 watts of power to run, compared to the more standard which use a minimum of 180 watts. Their new Klasse line of ceiling and cassette rangehoods presented at designEX are designed to function in large open plan living areas and their Paradigma model is the first modular suction system designed to be inconspicuous in the kitchen ceiling with an aesthetic similar to a ceiling light. Easy Bathroom Solutions was established by Lorenzo Giberti, an Italian native, who sources only the highest quality European and Australian bathroom products. Their exquisite range of basins, baths, showers and custom made vanities are exclusively imported directly from Novello in Italy; a long-standing brand in the bathroom furniture field. Novello not only offer a high aesthetic but bring a conceptual freedom to bathroom design with the opportunity to customise elements of their products. Novello’s latest collections are highly versatile, thanks to their modular elements and a selection of variety of available finishes. They are shown alongside a core line-up of premium brands including Victoria Albert, Novellini, Sussex, Parisi, Gracott, Toto, Paco Jaanson, Karol, and Platypus. Austaron surfaces are the exclusive Australian suppliers of – Samsung Staron® Solid Surfaces, Acrylic Couture, Dekolin, Melapia and iMotion – which offer up a myriad of applications and design possibilities. Dekolin can be

Schweigen

used in a seemingly endless number of applications including decorative ceilings, art features, lighting and wall partitions and can be fabricated into just about any shape, allowing for an infinite variety of horizontal and vertical surfacing solutions for residential and commercial applications. Acrylic Couture® is an acrylic glass which can achieve remarkable effects through extravagant inlays and artistic colour combinations. The acrylic glass can be encased around all sorts of materials including metallic fabrics and feathers, capturing the movement of the material so that it appear as if frozen in time. Lamicolor import quality chemically resistant high pressure laminates, scratch proof compact laminates, E0 Melamine faced board, Quadra and Streamline Benchtops. They will be demonstrating the considerable benefits of fire-retardant splashbacks in their product range. These Duropal Pyroex kitchen splashbacks are made of 4mm fire-retardant compact HPL and as they require no special tooling are easy to install. They are suitable for damp and wet areas or wherever outstanding durability is essential such as wall protection. In addition they suit applications for furniture and installation elements, particularly when low material cross-sections or open edge solutions are required as part of fire protection concepts.

From the local to the global, the virtuosity of one man and one woman outfits sits alongside that of some of the biggest names in international design. Presenting the work of some of the world’s leading designers, this is the first time Australian design store, KE-ZU has participated at designEX. Collaborating with designer Dana Tomic Hughes from Yellowtrace they are creating an arresting destination to present the latest lighting and furniture solutions from international design heavyweights, including but not limited to, Arik Levy, Patricia Urquiola, Charles Pollock, Quim Larrea, Piergiorgio Cazzaniga, Kenneth Cobonpue and Lievore, Altherr & Molina. They will also launch a range of outdoor, suspension, floor and table lamps from French lighting manufacturer, Forestier and also present their own new collection of locally manufactured designer furniture. All products from Tait furniture are inherently versatile, suited to spontaneous application both indoors and out. Each range is an original design created in-house or in collaboration with local design talent. As a backdrop to their latest collection their deisgnEX stand in an autumnal palette of metallic copper, bronzes and creams is designed as a deceptively cosy indoor living space for furniture that would be equally at ease amongst the harshest of outdoor elements. Launching some new partnerships they will introduce their Stellar screening system, a decorative wall piece designed by Christina Waterson and Pick ‘n’ Mix table and bench, featuring tactile cement sheet and shapely geometric legs by Daniel Emma. Adam Goodrem’s Volley dining table arrives in a dashing new size, teamed with Volley chairs sporting fabric seat pads and leather trim arms, the Volley rocker chair and nano coffee table in choice of luxe finishes. Mobi Contract is a design-focused FF&E supplier established in 2007 specialising in the custom manufacture of furniture for project interiors. With over 40

years of manufacturing and construction experience, the team at Mobi also collaborates with a global network of supply partners who are leaders in their field. At designEX, Mobi will launch new hospitality collections designed by Chris Connell for MAP including Rib & Hug together with the latest Zantilam family by Patricia Urquiola for Very Wood which were also presented during the Milan Fair. Corporate Culture will recreate, the Cult House an imagined residential installation, collaborating with Swedish design house, Bolon. The installation will showcase furniture from their Collection of Vanguard brands including Fritz Hansen, Poltroons Frau, Cappellini, Lightly, Cassina, among others. In celebration of the 100 Year Anniversary of Danish furniture designer Hans J Wegner, Corporate Culture will provide their largest exhibition installation of his iconic Wishbone chair in the designEX Cult Bar. Designed by award winning designer, Tomek Archer of Tomahawk studios the NOMI range of furniture is hand crafted in Melbourne from solid oak and for the first time will appear at designEX. Combining online technology, product design and efficient manufacturing processes, NOMI provides affordable and accessible designer furniture that can be customised online. Redefining the flat-pack, the NOMI range uses a self-assembly process by adopting an ingenious peg, lock and wedge joinery system requiring no tools. Customisation options include a spectrum of colours and basic shades, as well as natural timber finishes, washes and the option to select either timber table tops or Compact Laminate tops in an innovative and durable resin. Weavers for International Floorcoverings apply their combined years of expertise and care to produce beautifully natural coloured wool carpet. Yarns used in their Villa Natralis woven carpet are 100% pure un-dyed natural wool fibre, graded and blended together to give

DESIGNEX 2014

100% natural colour tones. In a centuries old method, the fibres are then spun and woven on Wilton looms to produce a highly durable woolen product, dimensionally stable and with a natural ability to repel liquids. Their range uses materials that were once viewed as primitive materials but have been revolutionised by modern technology to produce strikingly simple custom hand woven floor coverings full of texture, character and style. Their Abaca floor rugs are made from the fibre of a Philippine tree related to the banana, and Abaca hemp, which is already soft to touch and becomes even more so the more it is walked on. The Damien Minton Gallery, based in Redfern, is showing a joyous new suite of work by Sydney artist Louise Tuckwell. Her interpretations of hard edge abstract painting use the formalist play of colour against colour, shape and edge meeting shape and line, to evoke a sense of harmony and poetry. Louise’s work graces many private collections as well as the MCA, Artbank, New England Regional Art Museum and the corporate collection of the national law firm Allens. Inspired by the character and patina of oak, Tongue n Groove has taken engineered timber to a whole new level. Unlike most engineered timbers, which are made from layers of ply under a timber façade, Tongue n Groove products comprise three layers of solid European oak. Using state-of-the-art engineering methods, these layers are bonded together to provide exceptional stability and durability with end matching and secret nailing making for easy installation and a seamless finish. They have worked with Australian architects and designers to create the colour palette and finish for all their ranges which they will feature at designEX. To design their stand they have again worked with Tobias Partners, the team who designed the Tongue n Groove Melbourne Showroom which won last year’s Retail Design Award.

Domus Textiles

As the design community become more connected, more collaborative, artists, makers, craftspeople and artisans are offering different and fresh perspectives in furnishing interiors. “If a picture tells a thousand words – a room, a garden, a business should be a picture when you walk into it you have a thousand adventures/experiences/emotions.” Artist David Bromley brings his unique conceptual energy to Interiors at designEX. He and his team at Bromley Interiors bring together a diverse range of creative backgrounds and disciplines for murals, furniture design, ceramic design, wall and floor finishes and antique and modernist lighting. As well as having a base studio providing art and design for an international market, they work with artisans, crafts and trades people in Australia, fabric weavers and printers in India, carvers in Indonesia, foundries in China and copper workers internationally. Corium, newly established in Sydney, has introduced the largest and most exciting range of high quality leather ever to come to Australia with a staggering 500 colours across 40 ranges. product at designEX as well as leading leather care products from LCK recommended by leading brands such as Porsche, Audi and Rolf Benz with Stefanie Muller from LCK on hand to offer professional product advice. Scandinavian Wallpaper source quality products with a Nordic twist, specialising in high end digital wallpapers and wallpaper murals. They will be featuring an exciting collection of wallpaper murals in adventurous and unusual textures such as battered walls, stripped timbers, white exposed brick work, even a set of old archival draws photographed in high definition which perfectly captures the beautiful aged patina of the metal. They will also introduce a Magnetic Wallpaper Range, the ultimate combination of science and design. This can be enhanced with personal mementos and sketches or even used in a business setting as visual communication tool. A magnetic lining paper is also available which can be applied under any of their wallpapers or murals to create a whole magnetic wall surface. Additionally their playful and colourful collection of Water Colour Murals will also be on show. Telegram Co will feature a line of trompe l'oeil wallpaper designed to mimic the look of vintage painted or aged materials from acclaimed Dutch design house NLXL. Their collaborations with Parisian Design Store Merci, and Designers Piet Boon and Piet Hein Eek have produced astonishing results. The ‘Scrapwood’ collection was the recipient of the Editor’s award at ICFF New York in 2011 and others are represented in the permanent collection of Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt Museum. The latest collection is ‘Remixed’ Wallpaper by Arthur Slenk. Q&A with Susanna de Vienne Working again with the national body representing textile distributors, designEX 2014 brings furnishings and textiles into focus reflecting the elevated role they are beginning to play in global design trends. Textile Distributors Association members are all wholly owned Australian businesses who promote local textile production and design and import textiles from Europe, the United States, Asia and India. The Association advances their interests by providing a voice to government, advice, and an information exchange.

S usanna de Vienne is Vice President of the Textile Distributors Association

Are a significant number of TDA members exhibiting at designEX this year? It’s unusual for so many of us to be all under the one roof at the same time. designEX is a great opportunity, not only for our members to promote their collections but to raise the profile of the industry itself. This year in particular, we have a lot of new members exhibiting. There has been a concerted effort within the Association to expand membership and since the success of designEX last year individual members have been promoting the benefits of joining with like-minded people in the industry.

What are some of the activities that the TDA is involved in? We’re involved with many technical issues associated with textiles such as fire-rating, commercial standards and how the Australian standards are applicable to our industry, as the majority of our products are imported. They come from countries with their own industry standards and we assess if these are applicable and parallel to our own. This is an important aspect, perhaps not a particularly exciting part but essential.

An exuberance of colour, a touch of whimsy and tactility proves that when it comes to design, there is much more to textiles than meets the eye. Domus Textiles will present their most recent collections including silks, weaves, embroideries, prints, damasks and toile de Jouy, designed around two themes. The first embraces an authentic gypsy spirit inspired by documents and original art. The second is resolutely classical with contemporary colours in a toile de jouy fabric and wallpaper range drawing from unique documents in the Canovas archives.

lace and pleated satin florals. Wallpapers offer a mix of the baroque expressed in dynamic stripes and combinations of foil and embossed vinyls with sparkling mirrored effects. Fabrics feature luxurious textures of velvets in dandy-like stripes and materials referencing linen, metallic thread, fluffy jacquards and pixilated floral cross stitch on silk shantung.

Gummerson fabrics will introduce a collection of three hangers, Dash, Savvy and Lavish, that each offer exquisite European sheers and prints. These extensive collections are offered in a colour palette in either classic pearlised neutrals, warm earthen hues or smoky charcoals. All designs are continuous, reversible and superbly finished with a delicate drape and a weighted base added to sheer designs for a clean contemporary finish.

Boyac will introduce the latest releases from some of Europe’s most prestigious textile and furnishing houses, including the latest offering from Designheure, the French publishing house of decorative contemporary lighting. Designed by Emmanuelle Legavre, the Couture collection is both chic and quirky, elegant and daring with just a touch madness and references fashion. The Couture collection offers pendants, floor lamps, table lamps and wall sconces all in various sizes and with a colour range of black and white, with accents of houndstooth and pale pink.

Among the recent collections sourced from around the world by Seneca Textiles, the 2014 collection from French fabric house Elitis is designed to mix and match. Flamboyant wall coverings of textured finishes of motherof-pearl, cork, sparkling precious metals are balanced with natural themed bark, driftwood, white washed raffia,

The expertise of the Belgian artisans who have been harvesting and transforming flax into linen since the Middle Ages, is unmatched anywhere else in the world. There are a limited number of textile distributors in Australia. The TDA has both apparel and furnishing membership – 60% furnishing, 40% fashion – the apparel textile importers who are supplying the fashion industry are strongly involved in the association. There is good collaboration from each other – knowledge sharing, problems solving and business support. We share a link to the TFIA which represents all shoes and fashion clothing importers. They would point to more global issues – attention to textiles that might be considered dangerous or countries that are using non-ethical production measures.

How do you work with the design and Architecture community? As an industry we are able to offer technical information and provide advice with regard to specialised fabrics, such as those for the healthcare industry or fabrics that reduce heat and light. Fabrics that address acoustics are also very important. In fact, any fabrics that might impact on the function or sustainability of buildings. Then, of course, there are the obvious decorative aspects to what we do.

be showing examples from this extensive range – from wide linen sheers to the heaviest upholstery linens and those prepared for printing, outdoor and fire treated applications. The team at In The Sac use their considerable combined experience, textile expertise and global resources to produce a range of luxury 100% pure linen bedding. By producing their own linen they are able to apply their knowledge of production and finishing to develop different weights and textures so that their sheets are manufactured in the finest, softest finishes possible. They have recently broadened their range by introducing colour which they will feature at designEX. Westbury Textiles will launch two new collections to the Australian market. Imbedded in Nordic design values and craftsmanship, the Tapet Café wallpapers fuse traditional heritage with a distinctly contemporary design. All drawn or painted by hand and printed by traditional craftsmen the collection includes, Tea House Paper, the result of a commission for the interior of Queen Louise’s Tearoom in Copenhagen. The collections of Spanish textile house, Lizzo, explore history and culture and are inspired by the beauty of past eras. Elliott Clarke have worked with architects and designers sourcing key collections for international design houses such as Mulberrry, Pepe Penalver, Alhambra, Lee Jofa, Malabar, Voyage, Brunschwig & Fils among others. Tile & Stone

Design Republic

designEX presents a comprehensive resource for products, tools, and technologies in the world of tile and stone. Featuring indigenous stones vital for maintaining the character and vernacular traditions of our cities, this Tile and Stone sector also puts the spotlight on the emergence of high-performance, high-aesthetic natural products that have been engineered to work harder in providing new design possibilities and more sustainable building solutions. As the largest sandstone quarry resource in Australia, Gosford Quarries has supplied sandstone for landmark buildings over the last century and their stonemasons and technicians continue to combine traditional skills with modern technology for innovative applications. They will be demonstrating how their investment in progressive technology has revolutionised the way sandstone is processed and opened up new design possibilities never before possible such as fluid designs and concepts. The Australian owned company also offers the broadest range of architecturally appealing colours and finishes including

rare stones for restoration and heritage applications. Europe Imports will introduce their Ezarri glass mosaic tile collection from Spain which combine the natural beauty and light reflective qualities of glass in a wide range of colours and textures. 100% of the glass used as raw material in their production process is recycled to create a hygienic material with zero water absorption that is ideal for wet environments. The durability of Ezarri tiles and their capability to adapt to curved surfaces presents lots of design options for use in swimming pools, spas, gyms and wellness centres. The world leader in tile and stone installation systems, Laticrete will feature LATAPOXY® 310 Stone Adhesive. This two component, high strength epoxy adhesive is engineered, formulated and optimised for the spot bonding fixing method of installing tile and stone on vertical surfaces. The fastest system available to clad vertical substrates, the adhesive maintains its non-sag consistency at high working temperatures of up to 35°C, creates a fast, permanent bond and is non-staining, rendering it ideal for white and light coloured marbles, stones and tiles. With an incredible bond strength of over 1300 psi (9 MPa), it is virtually unbreakable and additionally shock and vibration resistant.

Dekton is a sophisticated blend of the raw material used to produce the very latest glass and porcelains as well as the highest quality quartz work surfaces and provides an ideal architectural solution for both interiors and exteriors due to its strength and versatility. Dekton employs a high tech process which is an accelerated version of the metamorphic changes that natural stone undergoes when subjected to high temperatures and pressure over thousands of years. A concept of ultra-compaction produces surfaces and sizes in a thinness that was previously unimaginable yet both UV and heat resistant for extreme levels of performance. Design Republic will be launching a brand new colour for their ever expanding portfolio – Mosa Terra Tones and Mosa Murals – introducing Grey Green as the latest addition to the internationally acclaimed Terra Tones concept. Functional, diverse yet invariably elegant, the Terra Tones collection provides an ingenious way to produce timeless, bespoke surfaces in numerous combinations by blending a variety of colour shades and tiles sizes on walls, floors and facades. The Mosa Murals ceramic wall tiles collection which spans an array of colour tones, sizes, delicate relief forms and gloss gradations, can be composed to create a bespoke mural.

SPECIAL PANEL SESSION

Know your stone – Bluestone

Avoiding, or if necessary, resolving tile and stone installation problems

Adhesive selection for ceramic tiles, natural stone, engineered and slim products includes a preliminary presentation by Colin Cass of Techtile Consulting

11.30am - 12.15pm Jim Mann – Stone Initiatives For more than a century, specifiers, town planners and homeowners have used Australian Bluestone products with confidence. In recent times a variety of imports have been introduced from various sources. Some of these materials perform well, others do not. ASAA Director Jim Mann (Stone Initiatives) will explain why some imported bluestone reacts differently to local material and what steps can be taken to avoid the problems which have been reported to ASAA.

Australian Natural Stones 1.00pm - 1.45pm David West – Materialise A visual tour of the natural stone materials currently quarried and commercially available in Australia, illustrated with images from projects featuring in the Australian Stone Architectural Awards (to be presented at designEX) and the ASAA Design Manual. This overview will provide inspiration for the sourcing and use of Australian stones in your upcoming projects.

How to gain an ecolabel and why it makes sense 2.00pm - 2.45pm Ingrid Cornander – Standards and Technical Manager, Good Environmental Choice Australia Increasingly, there are expectations on product suppliers to demonstrate meeting more rigorous environmental and social standards. What are these standards and what role can independent third party certification play in demonstrating this? This session also will explain the steps involved in getting certified, and benefits such as recognition by the Green Building Council of Australia and the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia’s ratings tools.

Past, present and future tile trends

10.30am - 11.15am Colin Cass – Techtile Consulting Colin Cass identifies the most common problems which occur with tile and stone installations. Colin provides practical advice on how to avoid running into trouble, or resolving problems if things go wrong.

Cladding of facades and feature walls 11.30am - 12:45pm Joe Ceravolo – Mapei The importance of choosing and preparing an appropriate substrate, installing waterproofing and efflorescence barriers. Selection of the right adhesive, correct techniques and adhesive application are critical. Movement joints and grout selection are also considered.

Slip, Slump and Shrink. Are they what you think? 1.00pm - 1.45pm Mike Marciniak – RLA Polymers Pty Ltd A growing number of tile adhesives are described as ‘non – slump’, some have an ISO slip rating of ‘T’. How many tile installers and resellers really understand these descriptions and how they relate to the adhesives performance? Mike Marciniak examines the causes of tile lippage in relation to the terms – adhesive slippage, slumping and shrinkage.

Spot bonding, 10 years on 2.00pm - 2.45pm Fred Gray – Laticrete An outlawed tiling technique with conventional adhesives made possible with specially engineered epoxy adhesives and well thought out installation practices. Waterproofing Lightweight Decks – Critical Issues

Peter Halliday reflects on the key product trends that have shaped our market since the early nineties to the present day – rustic, polished porcelain, mosaic, timberlook tiles (early attempts), contemporary glazed porcelain replications of other surfaces, slim materials and the gradual return to decoration. Peter also reviews developing colour and texture trends, prime influences, products of the future and growth opportunities. This highly visual presentation will feature a multitude of striking images.

The evolution of sandstone 4.00pm - 4.45pm Charlie Sarkis – Gosford Quarries Many of Sydney’s landmark buildings, bridges, monuments and structures were fashioned from native sandstone. Charlie Sarkis reviews traditional and modern sandstone production techniques. Discover all the latest advances employed in the extraction, processing, fabrication and installation of locally roduced sandstone.

Barry Schafer – BLS Consulting All too frequently, lightweight decks fail in their waterproofing performance. In addition to the critical detailing requirements specified in the standard, installers and end users need to consider the relationship between the chosen tile, the ceramic tile adhesive and the underlaying substrate, which play an important part in the performance of membranes.

Education and tiling – workforce planning 2014 and beyond 4.00pm-4.45pm Barry Bulmer – ATC NSW & Sydney TAFE Natalie Foxton – ATC NSW & Sydney TAFE Tony Filetti – ATC NSW & Sydney TAFE With the accelerating demand to be competitive and innovative, investing in staff development arms companies with a distinct advantage. Sydney TAFE in partnership with The Australian Tile Council NSW invites attendees to hear about the benefits of education and training within the Tiling industry.

10.30am- 12.00pm Fred Gray – Laticrete Joe Ceravolo – Mapei Mike Marciniak – RLA Polymers Attendees are invited to ask questions about the type of adhesive that can be used to install the products detailed above. Panel members will answer questions related to substrates, priming, initial grab, open-time, slump, use of levelling systems, benefits of using low dispersion adhesives, installation of slim tiles and more besides.

Sealing and maintenance of tile and stone 12.30pm-2.00pm Greg Foulds – CDK Stone Gabriel Chapman – Dry Treat This session will be address prevailing industry practices and new technologies including coatings. An invited panel will then answer and debate questions from attendees on all aspects of this important subject.

Empowering architects and merchants to make appropriate slip resistance decisions 2.15pm-4.15pm Richard Bowman – Intertile Research Carl Strauntins – Safe Environments Slip resistance experts Richard Bowman (Intertile Research) and Carl Strautins (Safe Environments) will briefly review recent developments, such as the new classifications in the revised AS 4586:2013 standard; whatever happens in the imminent revision of the HB 197 recommendations; the newly revised AS 1657:2013, Fixed platforms, walkways, stairways and ladders; the new mandated slip resistance requirements in the National Construction Code 2014; stairway safety research findings; the proposed Livable Housing Australia slip resistance requirements; the Victoria University pilot study, Using virtual reality environments in gait biodynamics experiments to determine the slip resistance of flooring materials; accelerated wear conditioning of slip resistance test specimens; the importance of appropriate maintenance; the ramifications of the revised AS 4663:2013 standard; and the psychophysical slip resistance experimental project that the ATC and TAFE NSW will run during designEX with members of the public, thus generating some of the data that should form the basis of standards and regulations. Guest panellists will be invited to discuss contentious issues; and audience participation will be sought. Even if the slip resistance risk models need revising, the audience should leave with a sound basis for making some fundamental decisions. With assistance from Carl Strautins of Safe Environments, Richard will answer questions on the new standards, accelerated wear testing and slip resistance in general. Celebrating 100 years of

HANS WEGNER As the city of Copenhagen celebrates the one-hundredth anniversary of the birth of one of its most famous sons, designEX together with Corporate Culture/Cult and Carl Hansen & Son also acknowledge the enduring legacy of the great chair master Hans Wegner, in The Cult Bar designed by leading Sydney based Interior Architect, George Livissianis. In order to mark the occasion, CEO of Carl Hansen & Son, Knud Erik Hansen, will be attending designEX, courtesy of Corporate Culture and hosting a special presentation to discuss this iconic designer, his work and his ongoing influence in furniture design. In order to mark the occasion, CEO of Carl Hansen & Son, Knud Erik Hansen, will be attending designEX, courtesy of Corporate Culture and hosting a special presentation to discuss this iconic designer, his work and his ongoing influence in furniture design. Regarded as one of the world’s outstanding furniture designers Hans Wegner was a motivating force behind the Danish Modern movement which did much to change perception of furniture design in the 1950s and 60s, showing that the traditional virtues of craftsmanship, such as sensuality, fine detailing and the use of natural materials, also have a place in the modern industrialised world. His designs retain the same relevance today and are currently produced by Carl Hansen & Son using the same authentic craft techniques as in the 1950s and 1960s. Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Son, says: “Wegner’s design approach is rooted in his exceptional understanding of the properties of wood and his persistent exploration of its potential. His deep respect for wood as a material in furniture production sparked in him an enduring curiosity about its nature

and potential. In many ways, wood is the essential common denominator for the collaboration between Wegner and Carl Hansen & Son. For both parties, wood is, so to speak, part of our DNA.” Among Wegner’s most recognisable designs is The Wishbone Chair, named after the shape of its back support, which he designed in 1949. Carl Hansen & Son has selected three iconic Wegner chairs to tell the story of the designer’s work on combining different types of wood. The Wishbone Chair, together with the classic CH33 chair, and Sawbuck Chair have, for the first time ever, also been produced in a fusion of oak and walnut. The term iconic is often bandied about such that its very definition has been diluted. However, when used to describe The Wishbone chair, in the context of Modern design, it couldn’t be more apt, and it was George Livissianis’ choice to feature in “simply, clean, minimal and classic” Cult Bar’s design. George has created award-winning interiors for fashion label, Jac+Jack, The Apollo and Longrain restaurants, and residential projects. He believes that the Danish Modern Movement still resonates and is relevant within Australian design today. “It’s the simplicity, the craft, the finishes, and the forms that attract them to the world. And diversity, they sit comfortably within a broad spectrum of interiors from the minimal to the decorative, within a beach house or a restaurant.” As part of the designEX speaker series, Knud Erik Hanson of Carl Hansen, George Livissianis and Richard Richard Munao of Corporate Culture will lead a Q+A panel to discuss authentic design.

Workplace

futurespace John Holland

A concept barely a century old, the office is being reconceived, primarily driven by the widespread use of technology but also out of economic necessity.

An artist impression of WORKOPOLIS

Ubiquitous high-speed broadband and mobile devices are genuinely transforming our working patterns, and culturally, big companies are also changing their conceptual approach to working spaces as they compete to attract the new generation of digital natives now entering the workforce. Gavin Harris and Angela Ferguson of interior design and architectural studio, futurespace, explore the workplace of the future in the installation WORKOPOLIS the central feature of designEX’s new workplace sector. Here they see the working environment as one aspect of a Utopian society where technology provides increasing connectivity between communities. “The separation between work and play will no longer exist in the future, and WORKOPOLIS explores how people will create physical and cognitive space within a borderless 24/7 society. These environments will reflect how working and living intersect through technology. The ‘WORKOPOLIS’ experience will be one of immersion and absorption through visual interpretations,” predicts Gavin Harris, Director of futurespace.

futurespace

Through a series of vignettes across a 60m2 area playing out various scenarios, WORKOPOLIS will explore how people will approach the workplace of the future and how co-working and collaboration will advance the future of this working environment. More effective work outcomes will be achieved by collaborative teams that disable after the completion of their assigned project, not unlike the production team on a movie set. These project teams will be designed to attract the best talent for the project and to develop the personal networks of workers. As designers respond to a ‘plug-and-play’ attitude, office furniture too, will need to adapt to a shift in mindset. WORKOPLIS will not only examine the workspace of the future but the objects within it.
