STRATEGIC PLAN

02

THE STRATEGIC ARTWORK PLAN FOR THE PENINSULA WILL FOCUS ON CREATING A STRONG VISUAL IDENTITY FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND ENCOURAGING PEDESTRIAN EXPLORATION. THE FIRST OPPORTUNITY WILL INVOLVE COMMISSIONING A BOLD LARGESCALE SCULPTURE TO SERVE AS A LANDMARK AT THE EDGE OF DORRIAN GREEN, WHILE THE SECOND OPPORTUNITY WILL INVOLVE A SERIES OF SMALLER COLORFUL SCULPTURES INSTALLED THROUGHOUT THE AREA TO FURTHER PROMOTE EXPLORATION AND ENGAGEMENT WITH THE COMMUNITY. TOGETHER, THESE ARTWORKS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO A UNIQUE AND PLAYFUL SENSE OF PLACE FOR RESIDENTS AND VISITORS ALIKE.

03 STRATEGIC PLAN OVERVIEW

LARGE ARTWORK LOCATION

SMALL ARTWORK LOCATIONS

THE PENINSULA’S RICH HISTORY OFFERS MANY POTENTIAL POINTS OF INTEREST FOR ARTISTS TO EXPLORE IN THEIR ARTWORK CONCEPTS. ONE SUCH POINT OF INTEREST IS THE AREA’S CONNECTION TO THE SCIOTO RIVER, WHICH PLAYED A VITAL ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY’S ESTABLISHMENT AND GROWTH. THE RIVER’S SYMBOLISM AS A SOURCE OF LIFE AND NATURAL BEAUTY COULD INSPIRE ARTWORK CONCEPTS THAT CELEBRATE THE AREA’S CONNECTION TO THE WATER. ALTERNATIVELY, AN ARTIST MIGHT CHOOSE TO CREATE A PIECE THAT REFLECTS ON THE CHALLENGES POSED BY THE RIVER’S HISTORY OF FLOODING, EXPLORING THEMES OF RESILIENCE, AND ADAPTATION.

ANOTHER POTENTIAL POINT OF INTEREST IS THE AREA’S NATURAL LANDSCAPE AND THE ANIMALS THAT ONCE ROAMED THERE. WOLVES, IN PARTICULAR, WERE PREVALENT IN THE AREA AND CAUSED MANY PROBLEMS FOR EARLY TRAVELERS. THIS COULD INSPIRE ARTWORK CONCEPTS THAT EXPLORE THEMES OF STRENGTH, SURVIVAL, AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HUMANS AND NATURE. OVERALL, THE PENINSULA’S UNIQUE HISTORY AND CONNECTION TO THE NATURAL WORLD OFFER MANY EXCITING POSSIBILITIES FOR ARTISTS LOOKING TO DEVELOP PLAYFUL, MEANINGFUL AND IMPACTFUL ARTWORK CONCEPTS.

USES TOTAL

The Scioto Greenways was a three-part project that started with the removal of a century-old dam, returning the river to its natural, narrower width and reclaiming 33 acres of new greenspace, creating a lush urban oasis and activated civic corridor adjacent to the Scioto Peninsula.

A new satellite location of the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in COSI resulted from an unprecedented partnership between these two institutions. It has been embraced by kids of all ages, leading to significant growth in attendance.

TWENTY-SIX PRIME ACRES RIPE FOR RENEWAL AND REDEVELOPMENT

Already on its way to becoming a lush, urban oasis, The Peninsula will have something for everyone: miles of waterfront views and pathways, acres and acres of parks and community greenspaces, conveniently connected bike trails, easy access to Scioto River canoeing and kayaking, and close proximity to the most popular places, happenings, and events. The initial phase will bring thoroughly modern office spaces, an independent, lifestyle hotel, resort-style residential living, and exceptional shopping and dining experiences.

Dorrian Green is a 6.5-acre park with themed gardens, bench swings and urban playground, atop a two-story underground parking garage. Located in the heart of The Peninsula, the park faces COSI, the #1 science center in the country and home to interactive play areas and engaging, educational exhibits that bring science to life.

National Veterans Memorial and Museum is the first and only Museum dedicated solely to the veteran experience – celebrating the service and honoring the sacrifices of Veterans, their families and the Fallen. Outside the 50,000 SF museum lies a 2.5-acre Memorial Grove, for contemplation and reflection.

COLUMBUS LIBRARY: LOCAL HISTORY DEPARTMENT

COLUMBUS LIBRARY: LOCAL HISTORY DEPARTMENT

FRANKLINTON: WE’RE READY FOR A BOOM!

LUCAS SULLIVANT LIKED THE LANDS AT THE FORKS OF THE SCIOTO WHERE THE SCIOTO AND WHETSTONE [OLENTANGY] RIVERS JOINED. THE RIVER WAS WIDE, THE LAND GOOD FOR FARMING AND THERE WAS A FOREST NEARBY. HERE WAS A PLACE WHERE MANY PEOPLE COULD MAKE THEIR HOMES. HE BOUGHT MANY ACRES OF LAND ALONG THE WEST BANK OF THE SCIOTO RIVER. HE DREW A MAP AND IN AUGUST 1797 LAID OUT A TOWN ON THE WEST BANK AT THE FORKS OF THE SCIOTO RIVER. HE NAMED IT FRANKLINTON IN HONOR OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN.

41

FRANKLINTON: LUCAS SULLIVANT

FRANKLINTON: LUCAS SULLIVANT

THE NAME LUCAS SULLIVANT CHOSE FOR THE NEW TOWN WAS FRANKLINTON, IN HONOR OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN WHO HAD DIED JUST A FEW YEARS BEFORE. FRANKLIN, A WORLD FAMOUS CELEBRITY AND FOUNDING FATHER OF THE UNITED STATES, WAS A MAN THAT LUCAS SULLIVANT ADMIRED DEEPLY FOR HIS COURAGE, INGENUITY, AND HIS STRONG BUSINESS SENSE.

44

FRANKLINTON: BEN FRANKLIN

IN THE EARLIEST RECORDED HISTORY WE HAVE LUCAS CALLING THIS AREA THE BOTTOMS BECAUSE IT WAS BOTTOM LAND. ITS CONNECTION TO THE WATER WAS BOTH A BENEFIT AND AN OBSTACLE.

47

THE BOTTOMS

SIX BRIDGES HAVE SPANNED THE SCIOTO RIVER AT BROAD STREET

SINCE 1816 WHEN LUCAS SULLIVANT BUILT THE FIRST BRIDGE THAT LASTED UNTIL 1832.

50

BRIDGES

BRIDGES

3,920,400,000,000 GALLONS OF WATER FELL ON AN AREA WHOSE LAND WAS ALREADY SATURATED. TO CONJURE UP A VISUAL IMAGE OF THIS MASS OF WATER, CONSIDER THE AMOUNT OF WATER FLOWING WATER OVER THE NIAGARA FALLS EVERY SECOND -

1,590,000 GALLONS OF WATER. AT THIS RATE, THE VOLUME OF WATER FLOWING OVER NIAGARA FALLS WOULD TAKE JUST UNDER 28 FULL DAYS TO EQUAL THE AMOUNT OF RAIN THAT FELL DURING EASTER WEEKEND OF 1913.

53

FLOODS

FLOODS

FRANKLINTON NOW IS INCLUDED IN THE CITY OF COLUMBUS. IT HAS CHANGED LESS THAN ANY PART OF THE CITY SO NEAR THE CENTRE, AND PRESERVES TO THIS DAY MANY OF ITS OLD STYLE VILLAGE FEATURES. IT IS A QUIET SPOT, BUT CANNOT MUCH LONGER SO REMAIN IN THE RAPID PROGRESS OF IMPROVEMENTS.
